Ottawa Redblacks acquire Veteran Linebacker Nyles Morgan in trade with the Edmonton Elks

0

OTTAWA – The Ottawa REDBLACKS have bolstered their defensive unit by acquiring American linebacker Nyles Morgan from the Edmonton Elks in a draft-pick swap announced on Saturday, December 27, 2025.

In the deal, Ottawa receives linebacker Nyles Morgan, along with a 2026 CFL Draft third-round pick (23rd overall) and a fifth-round pick (41st overall). In return, the Edmonton Elks receive a 2026 third-round pick (21st overall) and a fourth-round pick (35th overall).

The trade provides the Elks with additional early-round draft capital, positioning them for a projected four selections inside the top 21 of the 2026 draft (including a compensatory second-rounder for leading the league in snaps by National players in the prior season). Edmonton plans to build around their emerging linebacking group, featuring 2024 CFL Most Outstanding Rookie Nick Anderson and 2024 first-overall draft pick Joel Dublanko, who stepped up in 2025 amid injuries to Anderson and Morgan.

“Nyles is a player who I’ve enjoyed watching from afar over the past several seasons and I’m excited to have him as a key piece of our defence moving forward into next season,” said Ryan Dinwiddie, Head Coach and General Manager of the Ottawa REDBLACKS. “He has been a premier linebacker in this league for a number of years, combining elite athleticism, football IQ and natural leadership. We’re looking forward to what he will bring to our football club both on and off the field.”

Morgan, 29, a 6-foot, 230-pound native of Chicago, Illinois, spent his first five CFL seasons exclusively with the Edmonton Elks (2021-2025), appearing in 62 games. He accumulated 386 total tackles (377 defensive), seven quarterback sacks, one interception, and four forced fumbles. The Notre Dame product was a standout performer, surpassing 100 tackles in both the 2023 and 2024 seasons — including a league-leading 111 defensive tackles in 2024. He earned team honors as the Elks’ nominee for Most Outstanding Rookie (2021) and Defensive Player (2024).

In the 2025 season, Morgan played in 11 games before a season-ending leg injury, recording 52 defensive tackles and one forced fumble.Prior to his CFL career, Morgan had brief stints in the NFL with the Chicago Bears (2018) and Tennessee Titans (2018).

Morgan is under contract for the 2026 CFL season and is expected to provide immediate veteran leadership and production to Ottawa’s linebacker corps as the REDBLACKS prepare for the upcoming campaign. The trade underscores Ottawa’s commitment to strengthening their defense with proven talent ahead of the new season.

Boxing Match Preview: Kazuto Ioka (31-4-1, 16 KOs) vs. Maikel Ordosgoitti (15-1-0, 14 KOs)

0

Kazuto Ioka, the Japanese boxing legend and former four-division world champion, makes his bantamweight debut in a WBA title eliminator against the hard-hitting Venezuelan challenger Maikel Ordosgoitti. This New Year’s Eve clash continues Ioka’s tradition of year-end fights in Tokyo, where he aims to rebound from back-to-back losses to Fernando Martinez and position himself for another title shot. Ordosgoitti, a knockout artist with power in both hands, steps into the biggest fight of his career but faces a massive experience gap against the 36-year-old veteran. Expect a tactical masterclass from Ioka, who could exploit Ordosgoitti’s aggressive style with counterpunching, though the challenger’s one-punch power adds intrigue in the early rounds. The bout is scheduled for 12 rounds at bantamweight (118 lbs).

Venue Location

Ota City General Gymnasium, Tokyo, Japan. This 4,000-capacity arena, a staple for Japanese boxing events, provides a pro-Ioka atmosphere with passionate local fans. It’s hosted numerous title fights, including Ioka’s past defenses, and favors technical boxers in its intimate setting.

Ringwalk is set for 7:00 PM JST (5:00 AM ET / 2:00 AM PT). The fight will be broadcast on Lemino (Japan) and available via international PPV streams. Undercard starts around 5:00 PM JST.

Injury Report

No major injuries reported for either fighter as of December 27, 2025. Ioka, who had a flu-related cancellation in a previous bout (December 2024 vs. Martinez), appears fully healthy after a smooth training camp for his bantamweight move. Ordosgoitti has no recent injury history, with his last fight in June 2025 ending in a TKO win without issues. Both are expected to make weight and enter the ring at 100%.

Fighter Matchups

This eliminator pits Ioka’s elite technical boxing and ring IQ against Ordosgoitti’s raw power and aggression. Ioka, a southpaw with precise footwork and counterpunching, excels in mid-range exchanges and has faced world-class opposition across weights. His defense (rarely stopped, only 1 KO loss) could frustrate Ordosgoitti, who relies on overwhelming opponents with heavy hooks and uppercuts (93% KO rate). Ordosgoitti’s youth (likely mid-20s) and reach advantage might allow early pressure, but Ioka’s experience (over 340 rounds fought) should help him weather storms and pick apart the challenger late.

Key stylistic clash: Ioka’s volume punching vs. Ordosgoitti’s one-shot power—expect Ioka to circle and counter while Ordosgoitti hunts for the KO. Prediction: Ioka’s savvy prevails in a decision.

Recent Form

Kazuto Ioka (2-2 in last 4):

DateOpponentResultMethod/Notes

Jun 24, 2023Joshua FrancoWUD – Regained WBA super flyweight title.
Dec 31, 2022Joshua FrancoDMD – Title unification draw.

Ioka has been in high-stakes bouts, showing durability but vulnerabilities against power punchers like Martinez. He’s 2-2-1 in his last 5, with decisions dominating.

Maikel Ordosgoitti (5-0 in last 5):

DateOpponentResultMethod/Notes
Jun 21, 2025Adriel HerreraWTKO – Dominant stoppage.
Apr 13, 2024Luis GuatacheWTKO Rd 1 – Quick finish.
Feb 10, 2024Jose GuevaraWTKO Rd 6 – Overpowered opponent.
Dec 15, 2023Earlier opponentsWKO/TKO streak continues.
Oct 20, 2023Regional foeWKO – Part of 14 KO wins.

Ordosgoitti is on a 14-fight win streak since his 2019 loss, all by stoppage except one. His opponents have been domestic-level, lacking the pedigree of Ioka’s foes.

Fight History

No prior head-to-head meetings. This is their first encounter, with Ioka’s vast experience (36 pro fights) contrasting Ordosgoitti’s relative inexperience (16 bouts). No shared opponents of note, but Ioka’s history against power punchers (e.g., losses to Martinez) could inform Ordosgoitti’s upset path.

Betting Trends

Over/Under leans under (60% bets on Under 9.5), reflecting Ioka’s decision-heavy style (75% of wins by points) and Ordosgoitti’s KO reliance against weaker foes. Trends: Ioka 4-1 in last 5 as heavy favorite; Ordosgoitti 0-1 against ranked opponents (his loss). December NYE fights in Japan trend to decisions (70% in last 10).

Forward Hannah Bilka was on long-term injured reserve (LTIR) earlier in the year (lower-body injury from February 2025) but has returned. Defenseman Hadley Hartmetz missed time last season but is healthy. The team is at full strength, with no recent hits or absences noted.

Ottawa Charge: Forward Gabbie Hughes is on injured reserve (undisclosed, placed recently; top-line center). Forward Fanuza Kadirova has missed the last two games with an upper-body injury (day-to-day). The team signed Olivia Wallin to a 10-day deal as a replacement. No other significant absences.

Player Matchups

This game features several intriguing battles, particularly in special teams and forward depth:

Susanna Tapani (BOS, F) vs. Brianne Jenner (OTT, F): Tapani leads Boston with points in nearly every game (11 goals last season), facing off against Ottawa captain Jenner, who has been key in recent wins. Expect this center matchup to control faceoffs and neutral-zone play.

Alina Muller (BOS, F) vs. Rebecca Leslie (OTT, F): Muller’s speed and playmaking (strong rookie season) will test Ottawa’s defense. Leslie has been Ottawa’s spark on the wing, assisting on recent power-play goals.

Aerin Frankel (BOS, G) vs. Emerance Maschmeyer (OTT, G): Frankel has been stellar (low GAA), while Maschmeyer needs to rebound from Ottawa’s defensive lapses. Boston’s perfect PK vs. Ottawa’s hot PP (two goals per game recently) could decide the game.

Other to Watch: Boston’s Jamie Lee Rattray vs. Ottawa’s Ashton Bell (defensive zone starts). Ottawa’s power play (league-leading) vs. Boston’s penalty kill (100%) is a macro matchup.

Betting Trends

Boston Fleet: 6-1 against the spread (ATS) in their last 7 games. Underdogs in only one game this season (won outright). 5-2 to the under in totals. Strong road trend: 3-1 ATS away, with a +7 goal differential. Power play converting at 27.8%, covering in all games with 2+ PP opportunities.

Ottawa Charge: 2-5 ATS overall, but 2-0 ATS in last two (overtime wins). 4-3 to the over, reflecting defensive issues (3.0 GAA). Home trend: 1-2 ATS, but covered in their last home win. Power play hot (6 goals league-lead), hitting over in 3 of last 4.

Head-to-Head Trends: Boston 5-1 ATS in last 6 at Ottawa. Under has hit in 7 of 11 meetings. Boston covers when favored by -150 or less (4-1 this season).
