0

The Toronto Raptors travel to the Pacific Northwest to face the Portland Trail Blazers in an interconference tilt on Friday, January 23, 2026. The Raptors, third in the Eastern Conference, seek to build on a strong road trip and improve their 12-11 away mark, while the Blazers aim to climb above .500 and solidify their play-in position in the West. This is the second meeting of the season, with Toronto winning the first 114-108 in Toronto on December 5, 2025, led by Scottie Barnes’ triple-double.

Venue Location

Moda Center
Portland, OR
Capacity: 19,393
(Opened in 1995 and formerly known as the Rose Garden, this arena is home to the Trail Blazers and renowned for its passionate “Rip City” fans, creating one of the league’s toughest road environments.)

Tipoff is scheduled for 10:00 PM ET (7:00 PM PT)
Broadcast: TSN (Raptors local), Root Sports Northwest (Blazers local)
Radio: Sportsnet 590 The Fan (Toronto), Rip City Radio 620 AM (Portland)

Injury Report

Both teams are managing absences, with Portland hit harder in the frontcourt.

Toronto Raptors:

Jakob Poeltl (C): Out (Left ankle sprain; out indefinitely)

RJ Barrett (SF): Questionable (Right shoulder impingement)

Gary Trent Jr. (SG): Game-time decision (Illness)

The Raptors will lean on Kelly Olynyk at center if Poeltl remains out. Scottie Barnes and Immanuel Quickley are healthy and expected to lead.

Portland Trail Blazers:

Deandre Ayton (C): Out (Right knee inflammation; expected return early February)

Robert Williams III (C): Questionable (Back spasms)

Scoot Henderson (PG): Game-time decision (Left hamstring strain)

Kris Murray (F): Out (G League assignment)

If Ayton and Williams sit, Donovan Clingan will start at center. Anfernee Simons and Jerami Grant are available to anchor the offense.

Key Player Matchups

This matchup contrasts Toronto’s defensive versatility with Portland’s athletic wings and guards.

Scottie Barnes (TOR) vs. Jerami Grant (POR): A clash of two-way forwards. Barnes (22.4 PPG, 8.6 RPG, 7.2 APG) is an All-Star candidate with elite playmaking, facing Grant (20.8 PPG on 46.2% FG, 38.4% 3PT) who’s Portland’s top scorer and defender.

Immanuel Quickley (TOR) vs. Anfernee Simons (POR): Guard battle of shooters. Quickley (19.2 PPG, 5.8 APG, 39.1% 3PT) thrives in pick-and-roll, while Simons (23.6 PPG, 4.8 APG) can erupt from deep but struggles defensively.

Kelly Olynyk (TOR) vs. Donovan Clingan (POR, if starting): Bigs in the paint. Olynyk (12.4 PPG, 6.8 RPG) provides spacing with 36.2% 3PT, against rookie Clingan (10.2 PPG, 9.4 RPG, 2.1 BPG) who’s impressed with rim protection.

Gradey Dick (TOR) vs. Shaedon Sharpe (POR): Young wings. Dick (14.6 PPG, 37.8% 3PT) adds shooting off the bench, while Sharpe (16.4 PPG) brings athleticism and transition scoring.

Other notes: Toronto’s defense (No. 7 efficiency) could stifle Portland’s 18th-ranked offense. The Blazers’ home rebounding (No. 6) may exploit Toronto’s frontcourt injuries.

NBA Game Preview: New Orleans Pelicans (10-36) vs. Memphis Grizzlies (18-24)

0

The New Orleans Pelicans head to Memphis for a Southwest Division clash against the Grizzlies on Friday, January 23, 2026. The Pelicans, languishing at the bottom of the Western Conference amid a rebuild hampered by injuries, seek to end a six-game losing streak and steal a rare road win. The Grizzlies, hovering around the play-in mix, aim to leverage their home court and rebound from a recent skid to climb the standings. This marks the third meeting this season, with Memphis holding a 2-0 edge after wins in November (124-112 in New Orleans) and December (118-105 in Memphis).

Venue Location

FedExForum
Memphis, TN
Capacity: 18,119
(Opened in 2004, this arena is the home of the Grizzlies and known for its gritty, blue-collar atmosphere that energizes the team’s defensive identity, especially during divisional games.)

Tipoff is scheduled for 8:00 PM ET (5:00 PM PT)
Broadcast: Bally Sports Southeast (Grizzlies local), Bally Sports New Orleans (Pelicans local)
Radio: ESPN 92.9 FM (Memphis), WRNO 99.5 FM (New Orleans)

Injury Report

Injuries have decimated both rosters, with New Orleans particularly hard-hit, contributing to their league-worst record.

New Orleans Pelicans:

Zion Williamson (PF): Out (Right knee tendinopathy; out indefinitely)

Brandon Ingram (SF): Questionable (Left ankle sprain; limited in practice)

CJ McCollum (SG): Out (Right hamstring strain; expected return early February)

Herbert Jones (SF): Game-time decision (Illness)

Without Williamson and McCollum, the Pelicans will turn to Trey Murphy III and Jordan Hawkins for scoring. Yves Missi is expected to start at center if healthy.

Memphis Grizzlies:

Ja Morant (PG): Probable (Right shoulder soreness; expected to play)

Desmond Bane (SG): Out (Left oblique strain; out 1-2 weeks)

Marcus Smart (PG): Questionable (Illness)

GG Jackson II (F): Out (Right foot fracture; out for season)

If Morant is limited, Scotty Pippen Jr. could see more minutes. Jaren Jackson Jr. remains the anchor, providing elite rim protection.

Key Player Matchups

This game features a contrast in styles: New Orleans’ pace-and-space offense (when healthy) vs. Memphis’ grind-it-out defense (No. 6 in efficiency).

Trey Murphy III (NOP) vs. Vince Williams Jr./John Konchar (MEM): Murphy (18.2 PPG, 38.4% 3PT) is New Orleans’ top healthy scorer, stretching the floor. Memphis’ wings will aim to contest his threes, with Williams’ length disrupting drives.

Brandon Ingram (NOP, if active) vs. Jaren Jackson Jr. (MEM): Ingram (22.4 PPG on 46.8% FG) brings mid-range scoring, but Jackson (19.6 PPG, 5.8 BPG) is a Defensive Player of the Year candidate who could block Ingram’s paths to the rim.

Yves Missi (NOP) vs. Zach Edey (MEM): Rookie bigs clash. Missi (9.4 PPG, 8.2 RPG) offers athleticism, while Edey (11.2 PPG, 9.8 RPG) dominates with size and rebounding.

Jordan Hawkins (NOP) vs. Ja Morant (MEM, if active): Hawkins (14.6 PPG) steps up as a shooter, but Morant (24.8 PPG, 8.2 APG) could exploit New Orleans’ 28th-ranked defense with his explosiveness.

Other notes: Memphis’ bench (40.2 PPG) outpaces New Orleans’ (34.8 PPG). The Grizzlies rank No. 4 in steals, potentially feasting on the Pelicans’ turnover-prone offense (15th in TO%).

NBA Game Preview: Sacramento Kings (12-33) vs. Cleveland Cavaliers (25-20)

0

The Sacramento Kings travel to Cleveland for an interconference matchup against the Cavaliers on Friday, January 23, 2026. The Kings, mired in a seven-game road losing streak and sitting near the bottom of the Western Conference, aim to snap a three-game skid overall amid a dismal season plagued by injuries and inconsistency. The Cavaliers, fifth in the Eastern Conference, look to build on a recent win and capitalize on their strong home form (14-9) against a struggling Sacramento squad. This is the first meeting between the teams this season; the Kings swept the series 2-0 last year with wins on March 19 (123-119 in Sacramento) and April 6 (120-113 in Cleveland).

Venue Location

Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse
Cleveland, OH
Capacity: 19,432
(Opened in 1994 and renovated in 2019, this iconic arena is home to the Cavaliers and known for its electric atmosphere during playoff pushes and high-stakes games.)

Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET (4:30 PM PT)
Broadcast: FanDuel Sports Network – Ohio (Cavaliers local), NBC Sports California (Kings local)
Radio: WTAM 1100 / WMMS 100.7 FM (Cleveland), Sactown Sports 1140 AM (Sacramento)
Streaming: NBA League Pass, Fubo (regional restrictions apply)

Injury Report

Injuries are impacting both teams, with Cleveland missing key backcourt players and Sacramento potentially without their star big man.

Sacramento Kings:

Keegan Murray (F): Out (Left ankle sprain)

Domantas Sabonis (C): Day-to-day (Knee; bone contusion – monitor closely as he’s missed recent games)

Daeqwon Plowden (G): Out (G League – Two-Way)

Isaiah Stevens (G): Out (G League – Two-Way)

If Sabonis sits, the Kings will rely on Alex Len or Orlando Robinson in the frontcourt, exacerbating their rebounding issues (ranked 26th in RPG).

Cleveland Cavaliers:

Darius Garland (PG): Out (Right great toe sprain)

Sam Merrill (G): Out (Right hand sprain)

Max Strus (SF): Out (Left foot; surgery – Jones fracture)

Chris Livingston (F): Out (G League – Two-Way)

Luke Travers (F): Out (G League – Two-Way)

The Cavs will lean on Donovan Mitchell for playmaking, with Ty Jerome or Craig Porter Jr. seeing expanded roles. Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen remain healthy to dominate the paint.

Key Player Matchups

This game pits Sacramento’s guard-heavy offense against Cleveland’s elite frontcourt defense (No. 3 in opponent PPG). Without Garland and Strus, the Cavs’ perimeter D could be tested.

De’Aaron Fox (SAC) vs. Donovan Mitchell (CLE): A high-scoring guard duel. Fox (26.2 PPG, 5.8 APG) thrives in transition but faces Mitchell (28.4 PPG, 6.1 APG), who’s averaged 31.5 PPG over his last five. Mitchell’s two-way play could exploit Fox’s defensive lapses.

DeMar DeRozan (SAC) vs. Dean Wade/Isaac Okoro (CLE): DeRozan (22.1 PPG on 48.7% FG) uses mid-range mastery to score, but Cleveland’s wings (Wade’s length, Okoro’s athleticism) rank top-10 in defending isolations. DeRozan averages 24.0 PPG vs. Cavs historically.

Domantas Sabonis (SAC, if active) vs. Jarrett Allen/Evan Mobley (CLE): A battle of versatile bigs. Sabonis (19.8 PPG, 13.2 RPG, 8.1 APG in limited games) brings passing, but Cleveland’s duo (Allen: 13.4 PPG, 10.8 RPG; Mobley: 16.2 PPG, 9.4 RPG, 2.1 BPG) leads the league in paint protection (No. 2 in blocks).

Malik Monk (SAC) vs. Caris LeVert (CLE): Bench spark plugs. Monk (15.6 PPG, 42.1% 3PT) provides scoring off the pine, while LeVert (14.8 PPG) could match his energy in second units.

Other notes: Cleveland’s defense (No. 3 efficiency) stifles opponents under 108 PPG at home. Sacramento’s offense (29th in PPG) struggles without Sabonis, averaging just 104.8 PPG recently.

Injury Report

Injuries loom large, particularly for Boston without their star forward, which could force adjustments in scoring and defense.

Boston Celtics:

Jayson Tatum (SF): Out (Achilles tendon injury; sidelined indefinitely)

Josh Minott (SF): Out (Ankle sprain)

Derrick White (SG): Day-to-Day (Undisclosed; status to be determined closer to tip-off)

The Celtics will rely on Jaylen Brown and Payton Pritchard for scoring, with Neemias Queta anchoring the paint. If White sits, expect more minutes for Anfernee Simons.

Brooklyn Nets:

Haywood Highsmith (SF): Out (Knee injury; out indefinitely)

Nic Claxton is healthy and expected to start at center, providing rim protection. The Nets’ depth is tested, but Michael Porter Jr. and Noah Clowney remain key contributors.

Key Player Matchups

Without Tatum, Boston’s offense shifts to Brown, while Brooklyn’s young core faces a defensive test against the Celtics’ versatile lineup.

Jaylen Brown (BOS) vs. Michael Porter Jr. (BKN): A battle of high-scoring wings. Brown (29.8 PPG, 48.8% FG, 36.4% 3PT) leads the Celtics in scoring and will exploit mismatches with his athleticism. Porter Jr. (25.3 PPG, 48.1% FG, 39.6% 3PT) is Brooklyn’s top scorer, but his defense may struggle against Brown’s drives.

Derrick White (BOS, if active) vs. Terance Mann (BKN): White (17.6 PPG, 5.4 APG, 1.5 BPG) brings playmaking and elite defense (1.3 SPG). Mann (7.6 PPG, 3.7 APG) handles the ball for Brooklyn but lacks White’s efficiency (44.7% FG).

Neemias Queta (BOS) vs. Nic Claxton (BKN): Big-man clash in the paint. Queta (10.4 PPG, 8.2 RPG, 1.3 BPG) provides rebounding and blocks, while Claxton (12.6 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 1.4 BPG) excels in shot-blocking and finishing (58.3% FG).

Payton Pritchard (BOS) vs. Egor Demin (BKN): Pritchard (16.5 PPG, 5.4 APG, 44.7% FG) steps up as a facilitator. Demin, a rookie, adds size but is still developing.

Other notes: Boston’s bench averages 38.2 PPG, edging Brooklyn’s 35.1. The Celtics rank No. 3 in defensive efficiency, challenging Brooklyn’s 25th-ranked offense.

Injuries could play a significant role, with both teams managing key absences that affect depth and rotations.

Phoenix Suns:

Bradley Beal (SG): Out (Right hamstring strain; out indefinitely, expected return late February)

Jusuf Nurkic (C): Questionable (Left knee soreness; limited in practice)

Grayson Allen (SG): Game-time decision (Illness)

Bol Bol (C): Out (Right foot fracture; out for season)

The Suns will rely on Devin Booker and Kevin Durant to carry the offensive load, with Ryan Dunn potentially starting if Allen sits. Nurkic’s status is crucial for rim protection.

Atlanta Hawks:

Trae Young (PG): Probable (Concussion protocol; cleared but monitored)

Bogdan Bogdanovic (SG): Out (Left ankle sprain; out 2-4 weeks)

Onyeka Okongwu (C): Questionable (Right shoulder impingement)

If Young is limited, Dyson Daniels could see more minutes. Clint Capela is healthy and expected to start at center, providing rebounding against Phoenix’s frontcourt.

Key Player Matchups

This game highlights star power and defensive challenges, with Phoenix’s scoring duo facing Atlanta’s young talent.

Devin Booker (PHX) vs. Dyson Daniels/Zaccharie Risacher (ATL): Booker (27.8 PPG, 6.5 APG) is a scoring threat from all levels, averaging 30+ PPG in his last five outings. Daniels brings length and defense, while rookie Risacher (if starting) could struggle containing Booker’s quickness.

Kevin Durant (PHX) vs. Jalen Johnson (ATL): Durant (28.2 PPG on 52.4% FG, 41.1% 3PT) remains elite, exploiting switches. Johnson (19.4 PPG, 10.2 RPG) offers athleticism and versatility to contest shots, but Durant’s mid-range game could prevail.

Jusuf Nurkic (PHX, if active) vs. Clint Capela (ATL): A battle in the paint. Nurkic (11.2 PPG, 10.4 RPG) provides playmaking, while Capela (12.1 PPG, 11.8 RPG) excels in rebounding and lobs from Young.

Josh Okogie (PHX) vs. Trae Young (ATL): Okogie might draw the assignment on Young (26.7 PPG, 11.3 APG), using his perimeter defense to disrupt Atlanta’s pick-and-roll heavy offense.

Other notes: Phoenix’s bench (39.4 PPG) edges Atlanta’s (37.2 PPG), but the Hawks’ home crowd could energize their transition game. The Suns rank No. 4 in offensive efficiency, testing Atlanta’s 20th-ranked defense.

Atlanta Hawks (Last 10 Games: 4-6)
The Hawks have dropped four of their last five, including a 102-115 home loss to Milwaukee (Jan. 21). Wins against weaker teams like Charlotte (118-110 on Jan. 18) provide hope, but defensive lapses persist.

NBA Game Preview: Houston Rockets (26-16) vs. Detroit Pistons (32-10)

0

The Houston Rockets travel to face the Detroit Pistons in an interconference clash on Friday, January 23, 2026. Detroit enters as the top seed in the Eastern Conference, riding a four-game winning streak and boasting one of the league’s stingiest defenses. Houston, sitting fourth in the West, aims to rebound from a recent overtime loss and end a five-game road skid dating back to early December. This marks the third meeting between the teams this season, with the Pistons sweeping the first two encounters in Houston (115-111 on October 24, 2025, and 107-96 on January 20, 2026).

Venue Location

Little Caesars Arena
Detroit, MI
Capacity: 20,332
(Home to the Pistons since 2017, this state-of-the-art venue has hosted numerous high-profile NBA events and provides a raucous atmosphere for Detroit’s resurgent squad.)

Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM ET (4:00 PM PT)
Broadcast: Amazon Prime Video, SCHN (Rockets local), Bally Sports Detroit (Pistons local)
Radio: SportsTalk 790 (Houston), 97.1 FM The Ticket (Detroit)

Injury Report

Both teams are dealing with key absences that could impact rotations and strategies.

Houston Rockets:

Fred VanVleet (PG): Out (Torn ACL in right knee; out for the season)

Steven Adams (C): Out (Grade 3 left ankle sprain; out indefinitely, expected return mid-March)

Aaron Holiday (PG): Out (Back spasms)

The Rockets will lean on rookie Reed Sheppard and Amen Thompson for additional ball-handling duties. Alperen Sengun is healthy and expected to start at center.

Detroit Pistons:

Cade Cunningham (PG): Questionable (Left hip contusion/illness; missed the last game but could return)

Caris LeVert (SG): Game-time decision (Illness)

Ronald Holland II (F): Game-time decision (Illness)

Duncan Robinson (F): Game-time decision (Undisclosed)

If Cunningham sits, Jaden Ivey and Marcus Sasser will see expanded roles in the backcourt. Jalen Duren remains available to anchor the paint.

Key Player Matchups

This game features intriguing battles between young stars and veterans, with Detroit’s depth potentially overwhelming Houston’s injury-thinned roster.

Amen Thompson (HOU) vs. Cade Cunningham (DET, if active): A clash of versatile guards. Thompson (18.5 PPG, 7.7 RPG, 5.2 APG) has been Houston’s engine without VanVleet, using his athleticism to drive and defend. Cunningham (23.4 PPG, 9.8 APG) is Detroit’s All-Star playmaker, but his status adds uncertainty. If out, Thompson could exploit Ivey’s defensive lapses.

Kevin Durant (HOU) vs. Ausar Thompson/Tobias Harris (DET): Durant (25.9 PPG on 51.1% FG, 39.5% 3PT) remains a scoring machine at 37, capable of exploiting mismatches. Detroit’s wing defenders like Ausar Thompson (elite perimeter defense) or Harris (veteran savvy) will aim to force tough shots and limit his touches.

Alperen Sengun (HOU) vs. Jalen Duren (DET): A matchup of rising bigs. Sengun (21.3 PPG, 9.2 RPG, 6.4 APG) brings skill and passing, but Duren (13.2 PPG, 11.4 RPG) dominates the glass and could neutralize Sengun’s post game with physicality.

Jabari Smith Jr. (HOU) vs. Isaiah Stewart (DET): Smith (15.4 PPG, 34.6% 3PT) stretches the floor, while Stewart provides rim protection and rebounding off the bench for Detroit.

Other notes: Detroit’s bench (led by Ivey and LeVert, if healthy) averages 42.1 PPG, outpacing Houston’s 38.7. The Rockets’ defense (No. 5 in efficiency) will test Detroit’s offense, but Houston’s road struggles (11-13 away) could be exposed.

Both teams have been competitive, but Detroit’s consistency shines through.

Houston Rockets (Last 10 Games: 5-5)
The Rockets have alternated wins and losses recently, with a 3-11 road record since December 1 highlighting their away struggles. Key wins include a 119-110 home victory over New Orleans (Jan. 18) and a 111-106 win over San Antonio (Jan. 20). Losses have come against strong defenses like Oklahoma City (91-111 on Jan. 15) and Philadelphia (122-128 OT on Jan. 22). Offensively, they’ve averaged 110.8 PPG in this stretch, but their defense has slipped to 112.4 PPG allowed.

Standout performances include a 121-78 blowout of Indiana (Jan. 17) and a 112-104 road win over New Orleans (Jan. 21 without Cunningham). Betting Trends

Against the Spread (ATS): Rockets 20-21-1 (48.8% cover rate); Pistons 23-18-1 (56.1% cover rate). Houston is 5-5 ATS in last 10, while Detroit is 6-4 ATS over the same span. Pistons are 14-6 ATS at home.

Over/Under (O/U): Rockets games hit over 19-22-1 (45.2%); Pistons 17-25-0 (40.5%, leaning under). Last 10 Pistons games average 228.4 total points, but they’ve gone under in 14 of last 17 home games vs. Houston.

Moneyline (ML): Rockets 1-2 as underdogs this year. Detroit is 17-4 straight-up at home.

Recent Trends: Pistons 4-1 straight-up last 5, but 2-3 ATS. Rockets 3-7 straight-up on the road last 10, 4-6 ATS. The under is 10-7 in Detroit’s last 17 games.

Detroit’s home dominance (17-4) and 8-2 record in last 10 outweigh Houston’s road woes (11-13 away, 3-11 since Dec. 1). With Cunningham likely returning, the Pistons’ depth gives them a 65% implied win probability (adjusted for injuries). Houston covers 48% of spreads and has kept games close against top teams (e.g., OT loss to PHI). Pistons are 2-3 ATS last 5; expect a competitive matchup where the Rockets cover in a low-scoring affair. Both defenses rank top-5 (DET No. 2, HOU No. 5). Last 5 meetings averaged under 220 points, and Pistons games trend under (17-25).

NHL Morning Skate – January 23, 2026

0
NHL Morning Skate – Jan. 23, 2026

Steven Stamkos scored two of his three goals on the power play to register his 16th career hat trick, climb an NHL all-time list and propel the Predators to their first three-goal comeback win of the season.

Quinn Hughes factored on the overtime goal to cap his fourth three-assist night since joining the Wild and recorded the second-most assists by a defenseman in NHL history through 20 games with a franchise.

Mitch Marner makes his return to Toronto against former teammate Auston Matthews and the Maple Leafs during a Sportsnet doubleheader, while the streaking Lightning visit the Blackhawks on ESPN.

STAMKOS’ HAT TRICK HELPS PREDATORS STORM BACK FROM THREE-GOAL DEFICIT

On a night when the team honored Roman Josi’s 1,000th career game, Steven Stamkos (3-0—3) gave Bridgestone Arena even more reason to celebrate as he led Nashville to a three-goal comeback win with his 16th career hat trick and second of the season (also 4-0—4 on Dec. 11, 2025). Stamkos joined Filip Forsberg (2 in 2023-24, 2016-17 & 2015-16) as the second player in Predators history to score multiple hat tricks in one campaign.

* Stamkos, who scored two of his three tallies on the power play, recorded his 39th career multi-goal period and tied Auston Matthews (39) for the second most among active skaters behind Alex Ovechkin (84). His hat trick tally also finished as his 99th career game-winning goal, which overtook Bobby Hull and Guy Lafleur (both w/ 98) for 11th place on the NHL’s all-time list.

* The Predators recorded their first three-goal comeback win in almost exactly one year (Jan. 21, 2025 vs. SJS). Overall, the NHL’s 15 three-goal comeback wins are tied with 2008-09 and 2006-07 for the second most at this stage of a season in the past 30 years (801 GP), behind only 2019-20 (18).

HUGHES CONTINUES TO PILE UP ASSISTS TO START TENURE WITH WILD

The Wild tied the game three times in regulation before Kirill Kaprizov (2-1—3) and Quinn Hughes (0-3—3) combined on the game-winning goal 45 seconds into overtime to help Minnesota (29-14-9, 67 points) outlast Detroit in a back-and-forth affair on ESPN.

* Hughes (Team USA) has collected an NHL-best 22 assists (tied) since debuting with the Wild on Dec. 14 (2-22—24 in 20 GP) – a stretch that includes four three-assist games (tied for the most in a single season in franchise history, Mats Zuccarello: 4 in 2023-24 & Kaprizov: 4 in 2021-22). Bound for the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026, Hughes also tied the most three-assist games by a player through his first 20 games with a franchise in NHL history, alongside Dan Daoust (4 GP w/ TOR).

PENGUINS AND BRUINS COMBINE FOR RARE FEAT WITH QUICK GOALS

Pittsburgh (3 in 0:37) and Boston (3 in 0:54) each scored a trio of quick goals en route to wins against Edmonton and Vegas, respectively. Pittsburgh (25-14-11, 61 points) opened up a two-point cushion on the idle Islanders (27-18-5, 59 points) for second in the Metropolitan Division, while the Bruins (29-20-2, 60 points) extended their lead on the idle Maple Leafs (24-17-9, 57 points) for the second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference.

* Pittsburgh’s quick three goals began with a pair of tallies from Anthony Mantha in 22 seconds – the second-fastest two goals by a Penguins player in the past 25 years behind Jake Guentzel (0:12 on Dec. 27, 2023). The third goal in that sequence was netted by Sidney Crosby, who found the back of the net for the first time against former longtime teammate Tristan Jarry – the 170th different goaltender the Penguins captain has scored against.

David Pastrnak (1-2—3) assisted on two Bruins power-play goals in a 30-second span – the franchise’s fastest pair of power-play goals since Dec. 29, 2019 (2 in 0:18) – en route to his 255th career multi-point game. Pastrnak (Team Czechia) finished with the game-winning goal after Jack Eichel (1-1—2) and Mark Stone (0-1—1) each extended their point streaks in a four-goal comeback attempt; his 81 career three-point games are the second most by a Czech player in NHL history, behind Jaromir Jagr (195).

* The Bruins have four games remaining before meeting the Lightning at Raymond James Stadium for the 2026 Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series. Boston (4-1-0), set to tie the second-most outdoor games played by one franchise, is no stranger to scoring in quick succession in outdoor games as well and owns the fourth-fastest two goals in that scenario (0:33 at 2021 LT).

MARNER RETURNS TO TORONTO (SPORTSNET), LIGHTNING STREAK TO CHICAGO (ESPN)
Friday’s eight-game slate will see Mitch Marner play at Scotiabank Arena as a visitor for the first time when the Golden Knights visit the Maple Leafs on Sportsnet and TVA Sports. South of the border, the Blackhawks host the streaking Lightning on ESPN – with Tampa Bay having only four more games before they host an outdoor contest for the first time (Feb. 1 vs. BOS, also on ESPN).

* Marner, who helped the Maple Leafs reach the playoffs in each of his first nine NHL seasons, is set to face his former club for the second time in nine days. Marner notched two assists in Vegas’ 6-5 overtime win against Toronto last week and can become the first former Maple Leafs player to post multiple points in each of his first two games versus the franchise since Mike Johnson (2 GP from 1999-00 to 2000-01).

* Marner departed Toronto ranking among the top 10 on the Original Six franchise’s all-time list for assists (4th; 520), points (6th; 741), power-play assists (4th; 178), power-play points (5th; 228), shorthanded goals (t-9th; 10) and shorthanded points (t-10th; 18). He earned NHL First All-Star Team honors in consecutive seasons during his time in Toronto (2020-21 & 2021-22) and represented the franchise at the NHL All-Star Game three times, including alongside Auston MatthewsWilliam Nylander and Morgan Rielly on “Team Matthews” when the event was held in Toronto in 2024.

* The Lightning take a 14-game point streak (13-0-1) into United Center, tied for the third longest in franchise history. If they maintain the streak through their next four contests, Tampa Bay would have a chance to set a new franchise record for longest point streak when they host the Bruins on Feb. 1 in the 2026 Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series.

#NHLSTATS MEMOS TO MILAN: LIGHTNING TO BE WELL REPRESENTED

After Team USA’s roster update Wednesday, the Lightning now stand alone atop the list for the most players from one NHL team heading to the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026. With 10 players named to rosters, Tampa Bay could join tonight’s opponent, Chicago, on the list of NHL teams to send a double-digit contingent to a single Olympics. The Lightning also lead all NHL teams for country representation (7 – CAN, SWE, DNK, LAT, SVK, SUI & USA).

* A total of 23 NHL players on 2026 rosters have Olympic experience, with the Lightning also tied for the lead in that category (w/ ANA, NJD & PIT). Pontus Holmberg played for Team Sweden in 2022, while Zemgus Girgensons skated for Team Latvia in 2014 during his NHL rookie season.

* Girgensons tallied 1-1—2 at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, including an assist on the opening goal in Team Latvia’s victory against Roman Josi (NSH) and Team Switzerland during the Qualification Playoffs. Latvia then stayed within a goal of Team Canada during their entire quarterfinal contest on the back of a standout performance by Kristers Gudlevskis, who made 55 saves – the most ever in one game at Olympics with NHL players – before making his NHL debut with the Lightning during the 2013-14 season. Gudlevskis was later traded to the Islanders for then-prospect Carter Verhaeghe, who now has three Stanley Cup wins including one with Tampa Bay.

Did You Know? The youngest player named to a 2026 Olympic roster is Team Latvia defenseman Alberts Smits, while the oldest is former Lightning forward Pierre-Edouard Bellemare (Team France). The #NHLStats Pack for the Olympics contains details on this, plus charts for all categories mentioned above.
