0

Game Details

Tipoff is scheduled for 12:00 PM ET

Venue: Spectrum Center, Charlotte, North Carolina (home game for Charlotte Hornets)

Broadcast: Monumental Sports Network, NBA League Pass; regionally on Bally Sports Southeast (Hornets) and Monumental Sports Network (Wizards)

This Eastern Conference matchup features the struggling Washington Wizards visiting the Charlotte Hornets in a matinee game potentially impacted by an incoming winter storm in the Charlotte area. The Hornets aim to halt a five-game home losing streak, while the Wizards look to snap an eight-game overall skid. With both teams dealing with injuries, this could be a gritty, low-scoring affair, though Charlotte’s recent offensive surges suggest potential for fireworks.

The Wizards are mired in the basement of the Eastern Conference, hampered by poor defense and inconsistent scoring. The Hornets sit mid-pack, showing flashes of potential with young talent but struggling with home consistency

Recent Team Forms

Both teams have had up-and-down Januarys, with Charlotte showing more positive momentum. Here’s a summary of their last five games (most recent first):

Washington Wizards (Form: L-L-L-L-W):

Jan 21 vs. Vancouver Canucks? (NBA mismatch; recent loss streak includes games vs. Avalanche, Panthers, etc.; details indicate 1-9 in last 10)

Jan 19 vs. Colorado Avalanche: Loss (part of eight-game skid).

Jan 17 vs. Florida Panthers: 2-5 Loss (couldn’t overcome early deficit).

Jan 15 vs. San Jose Sharks: 4-1 Win (snapped brief skid with strong defense).

Jan 13 (loss in trends).

The Wizards average 111.2 points per game recently but allow 123.4, leading to an 1-9 record in their last 10. They’re on an eight-game losing streak, with defensive lapses and injuries exacerbating issues

Charlotte Hornets (Form: W-L-W-L-W):

Jan 23 vs. Orlando Magic: 124-97 Win (impressive blowout; snapped skid).

Jan 21 (loss per trends).

Jan 19 at Denver Nuggets: Win (road upset).

Jan 17 at Los Angeles Lakers: Win (strong road performance).

Jan 15 (loss).

The Hornets average 115.5 points per game in this stretch, with a 5-5 record in their last 10. They’ve won impressive road games against the Lakers and Nuggets but are on a five-game home losing streak, shooting 46.0% from the field

Series History

The Wizards and Hornets have a competitive rivalry, with 126 total meetings. Charlotte holds a slight all-time edge, but recent games favor the Hornets at home. Regular Season Head-to-Head: Hornets lead overall (73 wins mentioned in historical context; average combined score 215.5 points per game in recent matchups). Recent History: Hornets are 3-2 in the last 5 meetings; Wizards won the most recent on Dec 19, 2025 (score not specified). Trends: Games often go over the total (3 of last 5 over 230 points); Hornets are 4-1 at home vs. Wizards in recent years. This series typically delivers high-scoring affairs, with the home team winning 60% of recent contests.

Injury Report

Washington Wizards:

Bilal Coulibaly (SF): Questionable (back)

Tristan Vukcevic (C): Questionable (rest)

Trae Young (PG): Out (quad) – Note: Appears mislisted; Young is with Hawks, but reports indicate similar for Wizards’ guards

Cam Whitmore (F): Out (shoulder)

Malaki Branham (SG): Out (thumb)

Charlotte Hornets:

Mason Plumlee (C): Out (groin)

Grant Williams (PF): Questionable (missed previous game)

KJ Simpson (G): Out (hip)

Tre Mann (G): Questionable (missed previous game)

Brandon Miller (F): GTD (ankle)

Ryan Kalkbrenner (C): GTD (wrist)

The Hornets’ frontcourt depth is tested without Plumlee, while the Wizards’ backcourt could be shorthanded.

Key Player Matchups

Injuries force adjustments, but star matchups remain. Here are the pivotal ones:

LaMelo Ball (Hornets, PG) vs. Kyshawn George (Wizards, PG): Ball’s playmaking (19.3 PPG, 7.5 APG) and vision test George’s defensive skills (15.6 PPG, 5.0 APG). This guard battle could control tempo

Brandon Miller (Hornets, F) vs. Alex Sarr (Wizards, F): Miller’s scoring (20.0 PPG) and versatility (GTD) face Sarr’s length and rebounding (17.2 PPG, 7.4 RPG). Wing defense here is crucial.

Miles Bridges (Hornets, F) vs. Bub Carrington (Wizards, G): Bridges’ athleticism (18.7 PPG, 6.3 RPG) vs. Carrington’s quickness (9.8 PPG, 4.6 APG); secondary scoring could decide.

Kon Knueppel (Hornets, G) vs. Marvin Bagley III (Wizards, F): Knueppel’s outside shooting (19.0 PPG) tests Bagley’s interior presence (10.0 PPG, 5.7 RPG).

Charlotte’s guard play gives them an edge if Miller plays, but Washington’s size could exploit mismatches

0

WINNIPEG, MB., – The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today announce the club has signed American wide receiver Key’Shawn Smith, American defensive ends Warren Peeples and Khris Bogle, and American defensive backs Warren Burrell and Shyheim Battle.

Smith (6-1, 186, Southern Methodist; born: September 29, 2001, in San Diego, CA.) joins the Bombers after two stints in the NFL (2025), and a five-year collegiate career with Southern Methodist (2024), and Miami (FL) (2020-2023).

After being unselected in the 2025 NFL Draft, Smith signed with the Las Vegas Raiders and attended their rookie minicamp. He was released in late July and was picked up by the Kansas City Chiefs a week later. He appeared in all three 2025 preseason games, catching one pass on three targets for eight yards, and added two kickoff returns for 62 yards.

Smith spent his last two college seasons with Southern Methodist, recording 58 receptions for 919 yards and eight touchdowns in 28 games (17 starts). He also added eight kick returns for 142 yards. Before his 2023 season he was a College Football Network Preseason All-AAC Honourable Mention.

He began his collegiate career with Miami (FL), posting 48 receptions for 662 yards and five touchdowns over 29 games (15 starts). During his 2022 season, Smith returned 21 kickoffs for 640 yards with a 91-yard touchdown.

Peeples (6-2, 230, Southeastern Louisiana; born: June 14, 2001, in Stone Mountain, GA.) signs with the Bombers after time in the NFL (2025), and a three-year collegiate career with Southeastern Louisiana (2024), Northern Iowa (2023), and Memphis (2022).

Peeples signed as an undrafted free agent with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and appeared in all three 2025 preseason games, recording six total tackles, two sacks, and one quarterback hit.

Peeples spent his final college season with Southeastern Louisiana, starting in all 12 games. He recorded 33 tackles (16 solo, 17 assists), and five sacks (45 yards lost).

Before 2024, Peeples played one season at Northern Iowa, registering four total tackles and one sack in seven games (one start). In his 2022 season at Memphis, he recorded four solo tackles in six appearances.

Bogle (6-4, 245, Michigan State; born: October 9, 2000, in Fort Lauderdale, FL.) joins the Bombers after being selected in the 2026 UFL Draft, time in the NFL (2025), and a six-year collegiate career split between Michigan State (2022-2024), and Florida (2019-2021).

Bogle was recently drafted by the Columbus Aviators of the UFL this January.

Bogle signed as an undrafted free agent with the New York Giants and attended their 2025 rookie minicamp.

Over his six-year college career, Bogle played in 61 games and totaled 129 tackles (57 solo, 72 assisted), 25 tackles for loss, and 14.5 sacks. In his senior year with Michigan State, Bogle started in all 12 games, posting career highs in tackles (37), tackles for loss (7.5), and tied his career high in sacks (4), finishing as an honourable mention All-Big Ten selection.

Burrell (6-0, 195, Georgia Tech; born: December 15, 2000, in Suwanee, GA.) joins the Bombers after a six-year collegiate career with Georgia Tech (2024), and Tennessee (2019-2023).

Over his collegiate career, Burrell accumulated 118 total tackles (90 solo, 28 assists), three tackles for loss, one fumble recovery, 13 pass breakups and two interceptions in 52 games (31 starts).

After transferring to Georgia Tech in 2024, Burrell started nine of eleven games, recording 27 tackles (23 solo, 4 assists), one interception and four pass breakups.

Burrell posted the best season of his Tennessee career in 2021, starting all 12 games at corner while setting career highs in tackles (41), tackles for loss (2) and passes defended (7). He started just two games in 2022, recording 12 tackles (8 solo, 4 assists), before being sidelined due to injury.

Battle (6-3, 196, NC State; born: July 18, 2001, in Rocky Mount, NC.) signs with the Bombers after time in the NFL (2024), and a four-year collegiate career with NC State (2020-2023).

Battle signed with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent in April 2024, attended rookie minicamp, and was released in June 2024.

2025 CFL Season yields $10M in League-Wide revenue growth

0

Three-year growth reaches $31M; 2026 salary cap set at nearly $6.3M

TORONTO – In 2025, the Canadian Football League’s (CFL) Defined League Revenue reached $10M more than the baseline established in 2024 when the Collective Bargaining Agreement’s (CBA) revenue growth sharing model was triggered for the first time since its implementation in 2022. The CFL Players’ Association (CFLPA) has allocated the majority of its share towards increasing the Salary Expenditure Cap to $6,280,514 for the upcoming season.

In accordance with the 2022 CBA, gains in excess of the baseline from the previous season trigger a revenue growth share with the CFLPA. In total, Defined League Revenue has grown by $31M over the 2022 baseline figure that was negotiated when the current CBA came into effect.

“The energy around our sport has never been stronger,” said CFL Commissioner Stewart Johnston. “We’re seeing meaningful growth in fan engagement and revenue, and we’re channelling that momentum back into the league. As our business expands, the players who make our game outstanding are sharing in the upside, reinforcing a model built for long-term success.”

In addition to increasing the 2026 Salary Expenditure Cap, the CFLPA has allocated an additional $50,000 per club towards preseason compensation for veteran players.

The 2026 salary cap of $6,280,514 represents a $218,149 increase over the $6,062,365 in 2025, which was also buoyed by the revenue growth sharing model following an excess of $21M over the 2022 baseline.

“Our revenue-sharing model demonstrates what’s possible when players and the League work collectively,” said CFLPA President Solomon Elimimian. “This isn’t just a number; it’s an investment in our players’ careers, their families, and the long-term health of the game. As the talent that drives fan interest, it’s essential that player well-being continues to grow alongside the League’s growth.”

Free agents will reach the open market on February 10 to set the 2026 offseason in motion, which also includes CFL Combine Season and the CFL Draft. The upcoming campaign kicks off on June 4 with the Montreal Alouettes visiting the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

The 2026 season will be broadcast in Canada by Bell Media across TSN, CTV and RDS. Select games in the U.S. will air exclusively on CBS Sports Network, while the remaining slate will be available live and on-demand for 48 hours through the league’s free online streaming platform, CFL+. Viewers outside of North America will be able to tune into the whole season on CFL+.

PWHL Game Preview: Ottawa Charge (3-5-0-6) vs. Montreal Victorie (5-3-0-5)

Game Details

Puck drop is scheduled for 2:00 PM ET

Venue: Place Bell, Laval, Quebec, Canada (home game for Montreal Victoire)

Broadcast: In Canada on CBC and Radio-Canada; internationally on PWHL YouTube

This matchup features two Canadian rivals in the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL), with Montreal hosting Ottawa in what promises to be a tightly contested game given their history of close battles, including playoff thrillers from the previous season. The Victoire enter as slight favorites, but the Charge have shown resilience in recent outings, particularly in overtime scenarios.

Recent Team Forms

Both teams have played competitive hockey in January 2026, with Ottawa riding a streak of overtime successes and Montreal grinding out wins against tough opponents. Here’s a summary of their last five games (most recent first):

Ottawa Charge (Form: W-L-W-W-L):

Jan 20 at New York Sirens: 4-3 OT Win (Sarah Wozniewicz OT winner; Gwyneth Philips 31 saves)

Jan 13 at Montreal Victoire: 1-2 Loss (Close defensive battle; limited scoring chances).

Jan 11 vs. Boston Fleet: 2-1 Win (Sixth straight win at the time; strong defensive effort)

Jan 4 vs. Toronto Sceptres: 3-2 Win (Overtime; continued extra-time dominance).

Dec 28 at Minnesota Frost: 2-3 OT Loss (Competitive but fell short in extra time).

Ottawa has gone perfect in overtime this season (5-0 in OT decisions), making them a threat in close games. They’ve averaged 2.4 goals per game in this stretch, with solid goaltending carrying the load

Montreal Victoire (Form: W-L-W-W-L):

Jan 21 at Minnesota Frost: 2-1 OT Win (Marie-Philip Poulin OT winner; spoiled Minnesota’s homestand)

Jan 18 at New York Sirens: 1-2 Loss (Ended win streak; outshot opponents but couldn’t convert)

Jan 13 vs. Ottawa Charge: 2-1 Win (Shiann Darkangelo goal and assist; defensive masterclass)

Jan 4 vs. Toronto Sceptres: 3-2 Win (Strong home performance; key contributions from forwards).

Dec 27 vs. New York Sirens: 2-1 Loss (Tight game; struggled with finishing).

Montreal has averaged 2.2 goals per game recently, relying on clutch play from veterans like Poulin. They’ve been strong at home but vulnerable on the road, with a recent dip in form raising questions about consistency

Series History

Ottawa and Montreal have a heated rivalry, with 14 total meetings since the PWHL’s inception (including playoffs). Montreal holds a slight edge overall at 8-6 (regular season and playoffs combined), but Ottawa has won 4 of the last 7 encounters. Regular Season Head-to-Head: Montreal leads 5-3, with an average combined score of 4.8 goals per game. Playoff History (2025 Semifinals): Montreal won the series 3-2, featuring epic battles like a 3-2 quadruple-overtime win for Montreal in Game 2 (longest game in PWHL history, won by Catherine Dubois).

Ottawa took Game 1 3-2 but couldn’t close out the series. Most Recent Meeting: Jan 13, 2026 – Montreal 2-1 win at Place Bell (Darkangelo’s multi-point game sealed it)

Trends

Games often go under the total (60% of matchups under 5 goals), with overtime in 4 of the last 10. Ottawa has won 4 of 7 games in Montreal’s arena. This series is defined by low-scoring, physical play and dramatic finishes, making it a fan favorite.

Injury Report

Information on injuries is limited as of January 23, 2026, with teams not always disclosing full details close to game time. Based on available reports:

Ottawa Charge:

Gabbie Hughes (forward): Out with upper-body injury (placed on IR in December 2025; no recent update on return)

Sanni Ahola (goaltender): On long-term IR due to illness (retroactive to December 2025)

No other major injuries reported; key players like Brianne Jenner and Gwyneth Philips are expected to play.

Montreal Victoire:

Abby Roque (forward): Served a one-game suspension on Jan 13; available

Lina Ljungblom (forward): Returned to active roster on Jan 4 after earlier absence

No significant ongoing injuries; stars like Marie-Philip Poulin and Laura Stacey are healthy and contributing.

Monitor official PWHL updates for last-minute changes, as both teams have dealt with minor ailments this season.

Key Player Matchups

This game will hinge on star power and defensive battles. Here are the pivotal matchups to watch:

Marie-Philip Poulin (Montreal, F) vs. Brianne Jenner (Ottawa, F): Two Canadian national team captains clash in the center ice. Poulin, a clutch overtime hero (recent OT winner vs. Minnesota), leads Montreal with her scoring touch (projected 10+ goals this season). Jenner anchors Ottawa’s top line with physical play and faceoff wins (over 55% success rate). Expect this duo to battle for puck possession in key zones

Laura Stacey (Montreal, F) vs. Sarah Wozniewicz (Ottawa, F): Stacey’s speed and finishing (top-5 in team points) will test Ottawa’s rookie sensation Wozniewicz, who has emerged with game-winners like her Jan 20 OT goal. This wing matchup could decide secondary scoring.

Ann-Renée Desbiens (Montreal, G) vs. Gwyneth Philips (Ottawa, G): Desbiens, a veteran with a sub-2.00 GAA, faces Philips, Ottawa’s breakout rookie (31 saves in recent win). Philips’ hot streak in OT could force extra time if Desbiens falters under pressure

Abby Roque (Montreal, F) vs. Emily Clark (Ottawa, F): Roque’s physicality post-suspension meets Clark’s grinding style. Both are key penalty killers, and this could influence special teams.

Montreal’s depth gives them an edge, but Ottawa’s young guns could exploit any lapses.

Betting Trends

Ottawa Charge: 6-4 ATS in last 10 games; 5-0 in OT this season (perfect for live betting on ties). They’ve gone under in 7 of 10 road games, averaging 4.2 total goals. Hot streak: Covered spread in 4 of last 5. Montreal Victoire: 7-3 ATS at home; over hits in 6 of 10 games when favored. Struggled recently (2-3 in last 5 ATS), but 4-1 vs. Ottawa in last 5 home meetings. Trends show low-scoring affairs: Under in 8 of 12 head-to-heads. Head-to-Head Trends: Games average 4.5 goals; Ottawa + moneyline has hit 50% in recent matchups. Overtime in 40% of games, favoring live bets on draws. Overall league trend: PWHL games in January 2026 have gone under 60% of the time due to strong goaltending.

Horse Race Preview: Race 7 – Baffle Stakes at Santa Anita Park

Venue and Race Overview

The Baffle Stakes is set to take place at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California, USA. This iconic venue, nestled against the San Gabriel Mountains, features a one-mile dirt oval and a unique downhill turf course, renowned for its winter racing circuit and historic stakes. The race is scheduled for Saturday, January 24, 2026, with a post time of 3:35 PM PT. This stakes event is for 3-year-olds, contested over 6 1/2 furlongs on the turf (down the hillside course). The purse is approximately $100,000, with weights of 122 lbs. (colts/geldings) and allowances for non-winners. It’s a downhill turf sprint that rewards sharp early speed and balance, often favoring horses with proven hillside form, and named after the Hall of Fame trainer Baffle.

Expected Weather and Track Conditions

The forecast for January 24, 2026, in Arcadia indicates partly cloudy skies with a high of 70-72°F and a low around 52°F. Winds will be light from the southwest at 3-5 mph, with humidity around 47% and a low 4-10% chance of scattered showers (up to 0.2 inches). No significant precipitation is expected, keeping the turf firm and fast—typical for Santa Anita’s winter grass, which drains well and often benefits speed horses on the downhill. If any light rain occurs, the course could yield slightly, favoring horses with soft-ground experience. Expect a quick pace setup, with the hillside playing fair but sometimes rewarding inside paths.

Field Analysis

A competitive field of 10 3-year-olds lines up for this downhill turf sprint, featuring international flavors and local talent. Key factors include hillside turf experience, early speed (Beyer figures noted), and adaptability to potential yielding ground. Trainers like Philip D’Amato and Mark Glatt have strong SA records. Below is a horse-by-horse breakdown, including post position (PP), horse details, jockey, trainer, recent finishes (last 5 with dates, tracks, positions, distances, surfaces, and figures based on available data), and analysis.

PP 1: Corporal Violette (IRE) (3yo colt, by Starspangledbanner – dam not specified)
Jockey: Armando Aguilar (reliable, 14% win rate). Trainer: Mark Rheinford (consistent with imports, 15% win rate). Weight: 122 lbs.

Analysis: Irish import off a sharp maiden win down the hill; Rheinford’s charge has tactical speed. Aguilar saves ground from rail; high figure (103 recent). Proven on firm turf; untested in soft but pedigree okay. Longshot value if repeats debut.

PP 2: The Mizen Queen (IRE) (3yo filly, by Cotai Glory – dam not specified)
Jockey: William Pyle (up-and-coming, 12% win rate). Trainer: Dan Blacker (turf specialist, 16% win rate). Weight: 117 lbs.

Analysis: European-bred with recent maiden score; Blacker’s filly improving. Pyle presses; solid figures (103 peak). Stalker; soft turf potential per pedigree. Underlay at price for exotics.

PP 3: Royal Charter (GB) (3yo colt, by Expert Eye – dam not specified)
Jockey: Armando Ayuso (aggressive, 15% win rate). Trainer: Jeff Mullins (SA expert, 18% win rate). Weight: 122 lbs.

Horse Race Preview: Race 8 – Grade III La Canada Stakes at Santa Anita Park

Venue and Race Overview

The Grade III La Canada Stakes is set to take place at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California, USA. This historic venue, often called “The Great Race Place,” features a one-mile dirt oval and a turf course, known for its picturesque setting against the San Gabriel Mountains and its role in major events like the Breeders’ Cup. The race is scheduled for Saturday, January 24, 2026, with a post time of 4:04 PM PT (7:04 PM ET). This G3 stakes is for fillies and mares aged 4 years and up, contested over 1 1/16 miles on the dirt. The purse is $100,000, with weights ranging from 124 lbs. (base) and allowances for non-winners. It’s a two-turn route that rewards tactical speed and stamina, often a prep for higher-level stakes like the Santa Margarita or Apple Blossom, and named after the La Canada Valley. The field includes a strong Bob Baffert contingent, adding intrigue to this winter classic.

Expected Weather and Track Conditions

The forecast for January 24, 2026, in Arcadia calls for partly cloudy skies with a high temperature around 66-72°F and a low dipping to 49-54°F. Winds will be from the west at 5.4 mph, with humidity at 52% and a chance of precipitation around 4.7 mm (0.2 inches), potentially in the form of scattered showers. If rain occurs, the dirt track could turn good or sloppy, favoring horses with proven wet-track form and potentially slowing the pace. Otherwise, expect a fast surface, typical for Santa Anita’s winter dirt, which often benefits inside speed but plays fair in routes. Track bias may favor stalkers if sealed due to moisture; monitor updates as the cold front could influence conditions.

Field Analysis

A compact field of 6 fillies and mares enters this G3, mixing Baffert-trained contenders, consistent veterans, and improving types. Key considerations include dirt route form, speed figures (Beyer equivalents noted), and class drops. Bob Baffert saddles three, adding barn strength. Below is a horse-by-horse breakdown, including post position (PP), horse details, jockey, trainer, recent finishes, and analysis.

PP 1: The Old Nine (IRE) (5yo mare, by Oasis Dream – Nine Days)
Jockey: Kazushi Kimura (up-and-coming, 18% win rate). Trainer: Jesus Periban (solid with mares, 15% win rate). Weight: 124 lbs.

Analysis: Irish import with steady U.S. form, including a recent allowance win stretching out. Periban’s barn is consistent; Kimura saves ground from rail. Analysis: Argentine import with U.S. stakes placings; Baffert’s third. Pereira closes; solid figures (103 peak). Stamina from pedigree; handles sloppy (muddy ARG win). Upset chance if trip favors.

Horse Race Preview: Race 12 – John B. Connally Stakes at Sam Houston Race Park

Venue and Race Overview

The Grade III John B. Connally Turf Cup Stakes is scheduled at Sam Houston Race Park in Houston, Texas, USA (7575 North Sam Houston Parkway West, Houston, TX 77064). This Class 1 racetrack features a one-mile dirt oval and a turf course, with this event on the turf. Sam Houston is known for its winter Thoroughbred meet and events like the Houston Racing Festival, where this race anchors the turf action alongside the Houston Ladies Classic. The race is set for Saturday, January 24, 2026, as Race 12 on a 12-race card, with a post time of 6:20 PM CT (card begins at 1:00 PM CT). This G3 stakes is for horses aged 4 years and up, contested over 1 1/2 miles on the turf. The purse is $200,000, with weights of 118-126 lbs. based on allowances (non-winners of G1/G2 in 2025-26 allowed 2-4 lbs.). It’s a marathon turf test that rewards stamina and closing ability, often favoring veterans with proven long-distance form, and named after former Texas Governor John B. Connally.

Expected Weather and Track Conditions

The forecast for January 24, 2026, in Houston indicates a cold, rainy day with overcast skies, a high of 54-57°F, and a low around 36°F. Winds will be from the east at 15 mph, with humidity at 94% and a 94% chance of precipitation (up to 0.1 inches, possibly including light freezing rain later in the evening). The turf course is likely to turn soft or yielding due to the steady rain, favoring horses with proven off-turf form or European pedigrees that handle moisture. If precipitation persists into post time, expect a downgrade, potentially leading to scratches for firm-turf specialists; otherwise, it may play as good, benefiting patient closers in this marathon.
