* Evan Bouchard factored on each of the Oilers’ goals to become the third defenseman in franchise history with a six-point game and help Edmonton stun Washington. Bouchard, Mason Marchment and Cole Caufield scored the NHL’s 21st, 22nd and 23rd hat tricks this month, which mark the most during a single January in League history (previous: 21 in 1988 & 1984).
 

* Patrick Kane had an assist against longtime teammate Jonathan Toews and needs one point to tie Mike Modano for the most by a U.S.-born player in NHL history.


* Alex Lyon extended his career-high winning streak to a franchise record-tying nine games as the surging Sabres improved to 18-3-1 in their last 22 contests. Lyon has the League’s longest active winning streak and remained one ahead of John Gibson and Karel Vejmelka, who kept pace by pushing theirs to eight.

BOUCHARD CAPS HISTORIC NIGHT WITH SIXTH POINT AND AN OILERS OVERTIME WIN

Evan Bouchard put his name in the record books on a night that saw him register six points and score his first career hat trick en route to a late comeback win that featured pivotal assists from the defenseman. Bouchard factored on the game-tying tally with 32 seconds left in regulation and then delivered the primary assist on Connor McDavid’s overtime winner – the captain’s fifth point of the night and League-leading 90th of the season.

* Bouchard became the fourth defenseman in NHL history to factor on each of his team’s goals in a game (min. 6). The others are Doug Crossman (3-3—6 w/ TBL on Nov. 7, 1992), Al MacInnis (1-5—6 w/ CGY on March 20, 1994) and Bobby Orr (2-4—6 w/ BOS on April 7, 1974).

* Bouchard became the fourth defenseman in Oilers history to score a hat trick, following Paul Coffey (4x; last: Dec. 20, 1985), Marc-Andre Bergeron (Jan. 14, 2006) and Risto Siltanen (April 4, 1981). He also joined Coffey (March 14, 1986 & March 29, 1985) and Kevin Lowe (Feb. 19, 1983) as the only Edmonton blueliners to post at least six points in a game.

* McDavid (2-3—5) climbed into second on the Oilers’ all-time four-point games list before his overtime goal secured his 13th career five-point game – the 12th most in NHL history. McDavid’s totals in 2025-26 jumped to 32-58—90 as he passed Alex Ovechkin (89 in 2009-10) for the most points in a season by a player before an Olympic break.

Kane moves to brink of tying Modano for LEAGUE’s U.S.-born points record

Patrick Kane had an assist against longtime teammate Jonathan Toews to reach 1,373 career points and move within one of tying Mike Modano (1,374) as the NHL’s all-time scoring leader among U.S.-born players, a title Modano has held since tallying twice versus San Jose more than 18 years ago on Nov. 7, 2007.

* Kane and Toewswon three Stanley Cups together over a six-season span and both factored on the same goal 301 times, marking the third-highest total by a pair of teammates in Blackhawks history behind Steve Larmer and Denis Savard (396x) as well as Stan Mikita and Kenny Wharram (339x). Kane and Alex DeBrincat have both done so 200 times (including 65x since reuniting in Detroit), the second-highest total by a U.S.-born duo in League history behind Clayton Keller and Nick Schmaltz (201x).



MARCHMENT’S HAT TRICK HELPS COLUMBUS SNAP TAMPA BAY’S POINT STREAK

Mason Marchment (3-1—4) factored on half of Columbus’ eight goals Saturday and scored his first hat trick with the Blue Jackets en route to snapping the Lightning’s 15-game point streak – the longest run the franchise has ever halted. Columbus (24-20-7, 55 points) scored eight goals in a game for the first time this season and moved seven points back of the “playoff line” in the Eastern Conference.

* Marchment became the fourth player in NHL history with a hat trick during a win that snapped an opponent’s point streak of 15-plus games, joining Logan Cooley (March 26, 2024; 18 GP by NSH), Kevin Fiala (April 5, 2021; 15 GP by COL) and Paul Kariya (April 17, 2006; 20 GP by DET).

* Marchment boosted his totals with Columbus to 8-3—11 in nine games. His eight goals are the most by a player before his 10th game with the franchise. Meanwhile, he also tied Zach Werenski and Artemi Panarin for the second-fewest games to 10 points with the club, behind only Scott Hartnell (8 GP).

LYON MATCHES FRANCHISE RECORD AS SABRES CLIMB ATLANTIC STANDINGS

Alex Lyon matched a nearly 50-year-old franchise record by extending his winning streak to nine games and the Sabres received goals from Tage Thompson, Rasmus Dahlin and Alex Tuch to overtake the Canadiens (28-16-7, 63 points) for third place in the Atlantic Division. This marks the first time since the Wild Card format was introduced in 2013-14 that the Sabres rank among the top three in their division at this stage of an NHL season (818 GP or more).

* The Sabres claimed their third straight win and improved to 18-3-1 since Dec. 9 (the day they started a franchise record-tying 10-game winning streak) – topping the NHL for both wins and points (37) in that span. Each of the top three teams – and four of the top five – for standings points since that date are from the Atlantic Division. Buffalo also moved to 9-2-1 all-time when Thompson, Dahlin and Tuch all score a goal in the same game.

* Brandon Bussi (35 saves) helped the Hurricanes (32-15-5, 69 points) defeat the Senators and maintain their hold on first place in the Eastern Conference. Bussi earned his 19th win in his 23rd career appearance and can become the fastest goaltender in NHL history to reach 20 victories – the current mark is shared by Bill Durnan (25 GP on Jan. 9, 1944) and Andrew Hammond (25 GP on April 11, 2015), the latter of whom achieved the feat with Ottawa.

* After Cole Caufield put the Canadiens (28-17-7, 63 points) up 3-2 with his hat trick, the Bruins (30-20-2, 62 points) battled back with two goals in a span of 12 seconds to take the lead and hold it as they moved within a point of their Original Six rival for the first Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. The Bruins earned a comeback win Saturday just like they have in each of their four outdoor victories as they get closer to meeting the Lightning during the 2026 Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series on Feb. 1 (6:30 p.m. ET; ESPN, SN, TVAS). STAR-STUDDED SUNDAY TO FEATURE 9 HOURS OF CONTINUOUS NHL ACTION

NHL Network and Sportsnet will carry much of the action on the last Sunday of January, starting with a star-studded clash in Toronto where Nathan MacKinnon (COL; Team Canada) and Auston Matthews (TOR; Team USA) will go toe-to-toe for the 18th time. #NHLSTATS MEMOS TO MILAN: 4 NATIONS FOES MEET WITH VISIONS OF GOLD IN 4 WEEKS

With exactly four weeks to go until the gold medal game in Milan, the Avalanche duo of Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar will face off today against Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews. Less than one year ago, MacKinnon and Makar helped Team Canada defeat Matthews and Team USA in the championship game at the 4 Nations Face-Off.

* Team Canada has played in the gold medal game three times at Olympics with NHL players, winning all three including two victories against Team USA (their only appearances) – Mario Lemieux captained the team in 2002 (5-2 W vs. USA), Scott Niedermayer wore the “C” in 2010 (3-2 OT W vs. USA) and Sidney Crosby led them in 2014 (3-0 W vs. SWE).

FISHERS, Ind. – The Omaha Supernovas, the world’s leading professional volleyball franchise, came alive with a new addition to the starting lineup, leaning on the offensive firepower from Reagan Cooper and the block defense from rookie Kiara Reinhardt to end the franchise’s historic three-match losing streak by taking down the previously unbeaten Indy Ignite (3-1) in a 23-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-23 four-set win Saturday night at Fishers Event Center in front of 5,706.

Having appeared for only one rally so far this season, Cooper exploded in her first extended action of the 2026 campaign, matching her Supernovas career high with 19 points by putting down 17 kills on a staggering .429 hitting percentage while adding six digs, one block and one ace. Brooke Nuneviller equaled her teammate in a pin-hitting showcase for Omaha (3-3) as the reigning Outside Hitter of the Year collected 18 kills on a .436 clip with 10 digs and one block.

Reinhardt had her breakout match, pouring in 13 points off six kills, one ace and a match-leading six stuffs to spark an Omaha block party. The Supernovas tallied 16 blocks in the four sets as middle blocker Toyosi Onabanjo followed Reinhardt with four rejections while setter Sydney Hilley blocked three Indy attacks.

Hilley dished out 38 assists and five digs, but her trio of blocks and kills displayed her impact at the net. Opposite Emily Londot was the third attacker to reach double-figure kills as the second-year pro produced 10 kills on a .290 hitting percentage. She also recorded seven digs, two assists and a solo block. Libero Morgan Hentz finished with a match-high 16 digs and a lone assist.

Despite passing at a season-low 35 percent positive, the Supernovas thrived in out-of-system rallies as they powered their way to a .362 clip on 127 swings with 54 kills and only eight errors. Omaha ended the contest with 47 assists, 44 digs and three aces.

The fast-paced offense of the Ignite hit .211 in the match but slugged their way to 27 hitting errors alongside four blocks, one ace, 57 digs and 54 assists. Indy also had three players reach double digits with 2025 All-League First Team opposite Azhani Tealer leading the trio with 16. Outside hitter Leketor Member-Meneh added 12 kills and Anna DeBeer compiled 11.

The Supernovas make their way back home and return to action Friday, Jan. 30, to play on Kiewit Court at the CHI Health Center to face the San Diego Mojo at 7 p.m. CST. Nebraska Public Media will broadcast the match statewide and can also be heard on the Supernovas Radio Network, headlined by flagship station KCRO 660 AM.

  • The Supernovas remain undefeated at the Fishers Event Center (3-0).
  • Cooper’s 19 points tie a Supernovas career record, which last occurred Jan. 12, 2025, at Grand Rapids. Similar to Saturday, that match also marked her second appearance of the season.

Set 1: Cooper started out hot, powering down a pair of kills and an ace, but Indy kept pace with the trio of Member-Meneh, Tealer and Martyn. Nuneviller got into the action with her first two kills. An Ignite hitting error and a joust win by Reinhardt gave the Supernovas a two-point cushion, but Tealer mounted the comeback with an ace to tie the set at 8. Nuneviller tallied another kill alongside Cooper to push Omaha ahead 12-11. After a Tealer kill, Nuneviller and Londot secured back-to-back kills for a 14-12 edge. Tealer killed another ball and DeBeer took care of an overpass to equal the set again. Reinhardt terminated on a swing from the middle and Cooper logged another kill, but a service error and Member-Meneh kill gave Indy a 19-18 lead. Londot took advantage of an overpass to equal the set. Tied again at 20, Nuneviller won a joust, but both teams traded service errors. Tealer located a swing on the back line for a key point to tie things at 22, and she followed with another to give the Ignite a 23-22 lead, forcing an Omaha timeout. Nuneviller earned a huge sideout for the Supernovas, but DeBeer answered with consecutive kills to give the Ignite a 25-23 first-set win.

Omaha did not have a problem with offense, hitting .441 with eight kills on a .471 clip from Nuneviller, but the Supernovas only had one block and one ace. Indy did not have an issue either, recording a .410 hitting percentage with one ace as Tealer paced the Ignite with seven kills.

Set 2: Tealer picked up where she left off from the first set with a pair of kills to give Indy a two-point cushion early. Cooper fired back with two of her own kills, plus a pair of Ignite errors tied the set. Martyn terminated from the middle and Member-Meneh tallied a kill for a 6-4 Indy lead. The Supernovas responded with a 4-0 run as Hilley roofed Tealer and Nuneviller found the floor for another kill to put Omaha ahead 8-6. The Ignite quickly tied the set again with Member-Meneh and DeBeer kills. Reinhardt took advantage of sets from Hilley, putting down two kills in the middle. Both squads exchanged points, including a kill apiece from Cooper and Londot. Tealer put Indy ahead 15-14 off a kill. An Ignite service error sparked a Supernovas run as Reinhardt stuffed two attacks, resulting in an Indy timeout at 18-15 Omaha. Out of the timeout, Tuaniga won a joust in a big point, leading to a Botezat kill and Supernovas net violation to tie the set at 18. Tuaniga won another joust battle, but Cooper answered with a kill. Tealer delivered another kill from the right side, and she followed with an overpass put away to put Indy ahead 21-20. Cooper tied the set and Hilley gave the Supernovas a 22-21 edge with her second block of the set. Indy appeared to win the next point, but an Omaha challenge revealed an Ignite center-line violation, handing the Supernovas a 23-21 margin. Nuneviller gave Omaha set point, but Member-Meneh unleashed a power attack from the left out of the timeout. Another out-of-system set did not bother Cooper, who notched her 11th kill of the night to give the Supernovas a 25-22 set two win.

Omaha hit .278 with the block coming alive with four. Cooper was the star, recording seven kills on a .500 clip. Indy was limited to a .167 hitting percentage with two blocks. Tealer and Member-Meneh each tallied five kills, but they only hit .059 and .214 to showcase the improved defense for the Supernovas.

Set 3: Tealer and DeBeer opened the set for the Ignite with kills, but a string of errors kept the Supernovas right on top. Cooper terminated from the pin and Reinhardt put down an overpass for a slim 6-4 Omaha lead. A hitting error and Martyn kill tied the set. Nuneviller turned in a kill and solo block before Martyn succeeded again on a swing. Nuneviller earned another kill, which was followed by a slick second-touch kill from Reinhardt. The Creighton draft pick stuffed an Ignite attack to push the Supernovas lead to 11-7. Martyn secured the next two Ignite points, which came between a Londot kill. Ahead 12-9, Omaha mounted a set-changing 4-0 run with a Hilley setter dump, Onabanjo block and kills from both Nuneviller and Cooper. Kayla Lund posted a kill in her first action of the night, but Hilley prevailed in another joust. Onabanjo roofed an attack and Brooke Mosher delivered her first career ace for Omaha’s largest lead of the season in a set at 19-11. Londot added three more points in the final stretch with two kills and a block. Hilley put the stamp on the set with a block, giving the Supernovas a 25-16 set win and a 2-1 match lead.

Omaha continued to pour in the offense with a .357 hitting percentage and a season-high six blocks, plus one ace. It was a balanced attack with three kills apiece from Nuneviller and Londot. Indy was shut down for a .000 clip with one block and no aces. Martyn led the Ignite with four kills on six swings.

Set 4: Member-Meneh powered the Indy offense early with four kills to provide a 6-4 gap for the Ignite. Reinhardt terminated on the slide, Londot posted a kill from the right side and an Indy hitting error put Omaha ahead 7-6. The Supernovas gave away two points on a pair of errors, but a 3-0 Omaha run followed with back-to-back blocks from Reinhardt and Cooper. Tealer snapped the momentum, but a service error and Reinhardt ace built a 12-9 cushion for Omaha. Onabanjo blocked another Indy swing and Hilley took care of an overdig to keep the lead at 14-10. The Ignite found life with the short serve, using it for three straight points to climb back within one and force a Supernovas timeout. Nuneviller sided out to keep Omaha ahead 16-14 at the media timeout. Nuneviller and Reinhardt traded kills with DeBeer and Martyn, but a hitting error and out-of-system block tied the set at 18. Indy caught the error bug, putting a serve in the net and getting called for a reach-over violation for a 20-18 Supernovas lead. Cooper added two more kills, but Indy stayed within arm’s reach due to Omaha service errors. After a long review that confirmed a Martyn kill off a tip, Nuneviller tooled the block to give the Supernovas match point. Omaha was hit with a net violation, but franchise icon Nuneviller put an end to the Supernovas’ historic losing skid with her final kill to seal a 25-23 set win and match victory.

The Supernovas continued to hit at a high efficiency, recording a .379 hitting percentage while tallying five blocks and one ace. Nuneviller led with five kills and Cooper added four as both outside hitters combined to hit .421 on 19 swings. Indy hit .226 with one block and no aces as Member-Meneh and Martyn shared the team high with three kills apiece.

Lithuanian Regulator Concludes Betsson Inspection With No Fine After Voluntary Compliance

Lithuania’s Gaming Supervisory Authority (LPT) has closed its investigation into Lošimų Strateginė Grupė, the company operating Betsson in Lithuania, after determining that the operator voluntarily corrected an instance of unauthorized gambling advertising during the review. As a result, the regulator opted not to impose a fine or other sanctions in its 22 January decision.

League Name Violated New Advertising Rules

The inspection centered on the use of the Betsson trademark in the official name of the Lithuanian Basketball League, which had been promoted as “Betsson‑LKL.”

A change to Lithuania’s Gambling Law that took effect on 2 July 2025 prohibits gambling operators’ names from appearing in the titles of sports clubs, leagues, or other sponsored entities. Despite the new rules, the Betsson name continued to appear in the league’s title, prompting the LPT to launch an investigation for unauthorized advertising.

Operator Corrects Violation During Inspection

Once the inspection began, Lošimų Strateginė Grupė acted on LPT guidance and removed the prohibited branding. The league’s name is now presented as:

“LKL, sponsored by Betsson”

—clearly separating the sponsor from the league name, in line with regulatory requirements.

The operator also cancelled the “Betsson LKL” trademark registration, ensuring it is no longer used or published.

Because the violation had been fully resolved by the end of the inspection, the LPT determined that its supervisory objectives had been met without the need for penalties.

Regulator Emphasizes Proportionate Enforcement

The LPT reiterated that its supervisory approach is based on minimal and proportionate intervention, applying sanctions only when compliance cannot be achieved through other means. Given the company’s cooperation and corrective actions, the regulator concluded that further measures were unnecessary.

The authority also clarified that using a bookmaker’s logo or name within the title of a sports club or league constitutes prohibited advertising. However, sponsorship acknowledgments—such as “Club A, sponsored by Company B”—are permitted, provided no logos are used and the gambling brand is not integrated into the entity’s name.

Stricter Advertising Rules Ahead of 2028 Ban

The July 2025 restrictions are part of a broader effort to reduce gambling accessibility and mitigate social harm. They serve as a transitional phase ahead of a complete ban on gambling advertising set to take effect in 2028.

The LPT noted that it has been actively supporting operators through this transition. Since March, the regulator has held five meetings with industry stakeholders, provided 45 individual consultations, and published detailed guidance and FAQs on its website.

Following the July rule changes, the LPT continued its outreach, delivering more than 190 additional consultations and issuing reminders and recommendations whenever potential violations were identified.

Tampa Bay Lightning recall F Jakob Pelletier from AHL Syracuse Crunch

TAMPA BAY – The Tampa Bay Lightning have recalled forward Jakob Pelletier from the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League, Vice President and General Manager Julien BriseBois announced today.

Pelletier, 24, made his Lightning debut this season on November 15 and logged 6:12 of ice time. He has appeared in 35 games with Syracuse, recording 19 goals and 41 points. Pelletier ranks third in the AHL for points and is tied for sixth for goals. He also paces the Crunch for points, goals and shorthanded goals (2), while sitting second for assists (22) and power-play goals (6). Pelletier was also selected to the AHL All-Star Game.

The 5-foot-10, 172-pound forward has played in 174 career AHL games between the Crunch, Calgary Wranglers and Stockton Heat, recording 70 goals and 171 points with a plus-48 rating and 24 power-play tallies.

A native of Quebec City, Quebec, Pelletier has skated in 87 career NHL games between the Lightning, Philadelphia Flyers and Calgary Flames, registering 11 goals and 29 points with a plus-3 rating and three game-winners.

Pelletier was originally drafted by Calgary in the first round, 26th overall, of the 2019 NHL Draft and was signed by Tampa Bay as a free agent on July 2, 2025.
