NHL Morning Skate – February 4, 2026

0
NHL Morning Skate – Feb. 4, 2026

Matthew Schaefer and Darren Raddysh both achieved rare defensemen-centric feats, as the Islanders rookie added to his point totals as an 18-year-old and the Lightning blueliner extended his goal streak.

Sebastian Aho was one of several soon-to-be 2026 Olympians who found the score sheet Tuesday, with the Hurricanes forward posting his 10th straight 20-goal season.

* The penultimate gameday ahead of the Olympic break will see 20 teams in action, including eight as part of a pair of doubleheaders on TNT and Sportsnet.

* There will be a trade freeze (no trade transactions of any kind) from 3 p.m. ET today through 11:59 p.m. ET on Feb. 22.

SCHAEFER, KUCHEROV LEAD TEAMS TO OVERTIME WINS AFTER LATE TYING GOALS

Matthew Schaefer (1-1—2) and Nikita Kucherov (1-3—4) both assisted on overtime goals to help the Islanders and Lightning prevail in late comeback wins. The two clubs accounted for the 105th and 106th game-tying goals in the final five minutes of regulation this season – the most at this stage of a campaign (891 GP) in NHL history. With the win, New York (31-21-5, 67 points) moved within one point of Pittsburgh (28-15-12, 68 points) for second in the Metropolitan Division.

* Schaefer (16-23—39) passed Bobby Orr for the third-most career points by an 18-year-old defenseman in League history, behind only Phil Housley (57) and Rasmus Dahlin (44). He also joined those three as the only 18-year-old blueliners in NHL history with at least eight career multi-point outings, tying Dahlin and Orr and trailing Housley (13).

* Kucherov factored on all four of Tampa Bay’s goals, including Darren Raddysh’s tying tally in the third period and Jake Guentzel’s overtime winner, as the Lightning earned their eighth straight victory at home and improved to 18-1-1 over their past 20 games. Kucherov recorded his 39th career four-point game and passed Teemu Selanne (38 GP) for the fourth most by a player born and trained outside North America, behind only Jaromir Jagr (56 GP), Peter Stastny (54 GP) and Jari Kurri (47 GP). Raddysh, meanwhile, extended his goal streak to five games and became the second defenseman with a run of that length this season, following Jakob Chychrun (5 GP from Nov. 20-28).

OLYMPIC-BOUND STARS SPOTLIGHTED IN #NHLSTATS: LIVE UPDATES
The latest edition of #NHLStats: Live Updates featured several noteworthy performances from skaters and goaltenders set to appear in the upcoming Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026:

* Sebastian Aho (Team Finland) tallied 1-2—3 and hit the 20-goal mark for the 10th straight season as the Hurricanes (35-15-6, 76 points) extended their home point streak to nine games and kept pace with the Lightning (36-14-4, 76 points) atop the Eastern Conference standings. Aho tied Ron Francis (10 from 1981-82 – 1990-91) for the most consecutive 20-goal campaigns in franchise history and also became the fourth Finnish player to post a run of that length, following Teemu Selanne (11 from 1992-93 – 2002-03), Aleksander Barkov (10 from 2015-16 – 2024-25) and Jari Kurri (10 from 1980-81 – 1989-90).

Lukas Dostal backstopped the Ducks (30-23-3, 63 points) to victory over the Kraken (26-20-9, 61 points) as Anaheim surpassed them for third in the Pacific Division standings. Dostal, who will represent Team Czechia next week, earned his 21st victory of 2025-26 and will head to Milan as part of a Czechia goaltending trio that has combined for 64 wins this season (also Karel Vejmelka: 26 & Dan Vladar: 17) – the most of any country heading to the Olympics.

Zach Werenski (0-1—1) factored on one of three Blue Jackets goals and Elvis Merzlikins turned aside all 24 shots he faced to help Columbus earn its sixth consecutive victory – the longest active run in the League. Werenski, who is set to represent Team USA, extended his assist streak to five games and took the outright lead in points among defensemen this season (19-42—61) while Merzlikins, who is set to skate for Team Latvia, moved into a tie with Marc Denis (13) for the third-most shutouts in Blue Jackets history.

ICYMI: Werenski was featured in one of two episodes of “NHL MY WORLD,” a short-form series that premiered on YouTube on Monday that shows fans a day in the life of NHL players from eight different countries as they prepare to represent their NHL club’s city and their nation on the world stage. The other episode featured Vegas’ Mitch Marner.

STADIUM SERIES MOST-VIEWED NHL REGULAR-SEASON GAME EVER ON CABLE

The 2026 Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series on Sunday delivered the most-viewed NHL regular-season game ever on cable. The Bruins-Lightning matchup on ESPN averaged 2.1M viewers (peak: 2.4M), +30% vs. last year’s Stadium Series (Red Wings-Blue Jackets). The matchup is also the most-viewed NHL regular-season game since January 2019 (Bruins-Blackhawks Winter Classic).

* ABC Hockey Saturday also delivered double-digit increases as Rangers-Penguins averaged 1.4M viewers, +68% vs. last season’s NHL on ABC average and Avalanche-Red Wings averaged 1.2M viewers, +39% vs. last season’s NHL on ABC average. Click here for more on the ratings from last weekend.

#NHLSTATS MEMOS TO MILAN: FINLAND ON FULL DISPLAY TONIGHT

With one week until the opening games of the men’s hockey tournament in Milan, the majority of Team Finland’s roster will be represented during tonight’s 10-game schedule – which includes potentially seven skaters playing as part of U.S. national broadcasts with the Stars (4) and back-to-back reigning Stanley Cup champion Panthers (3) in action.

* Florida’s Anton LundellEetu Luostarinen and Niko Mikkola can join a select group of players in NHL history to follow up a Stanley Cup championship with an Olympic gold medal in the subsequent season, a list that includes Sidney Crosby (PIT; Team Canada) who won the Cup in 2008-09 and Olympic gold in 2010. The last set of players to accomplish the feat were Jonathan ToewsDuncan Keith and Patrick Sharp during the 2013-14 campaign with Chicago and Team Canada.

* Luostarinen and Mikkola also have an opportunity to join elite hockey history when they don the blue and white for Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026. The Panthers teammates, who also collaborated for their country’s gold medal-winning performance at the 2019 World Championships, can join the illustrious Triple Gold Club – a distinction only three active players hold (Crosby, Toews & Corey Perry).

Roope HintzMikko RantanenMiro Heiskanen and Esa Lindell will represent the Stars on Finland’s roster, with Heiskanen among a small group of NHL skaters to also participate in the 2018 and 2022 Olympic Winter Games (also Finnish teammate Eeli Tolvanen). Overall, the Stars’ four representatives are tied for the most by one NHL team on an Olympic roster (also MIN: 4 on Sweden).

* Legendary Finnish icon Teemu Selanne was crucial for his country during Olympic Winter Games that featured NHL players and helped Finland reach the podium in four of his five appearances (silver in 2006; bronze in 2014, 2010 & 1998). Overall, a Finnish skater owns four of the top six scoring performances in a single tournament with NHL players, a benchmark Selanne shares with Saku Koivu.

HUGHES’ HELPING HAND FEATURED ON NHL’S 10-GAME WEDNESDAY

Quinn Hughes and the Wild (33-14-10, 76 points) are one of 20 teams in action Wednesday. The full slate of hockey also includes a pair of all-Canadian matchups when the Canadiens (31-17-8, 70 points) face the Jets (22-25-8, 52 points) as well as the next instalment of the “Battle of Alberta” between the Oilers (28-21-8, 64 points) and Flames (22-27-6, 50 points) as part of a Sportsnet doubleheader.

* Hughes (Team USA) will take to the ice against the Predators with an opportunity to establish a franchise record for longest assist streak; his active nine-game stretch is currently tied with teammate Kirill Kaprizov (9 GP in 2022-23).

* Bolstered by the NHL’s second-most assists (29) since joining the Wild on Dec. 14, 2025 and five outings with three or more helpers, Hughes can become the first defenseman in League history to register a 10-game assist streak in his first season with a franchise (tied w/ Tom Kurvers: 9 GP in 1991-92 w/ NYI & Tom Edur: 9 GP in 1977-78 w/ PIT).

VERHAEGHE, PANTHERS IN FIRST GAME OF TNT DOUBLEHEADER
Wednesday will also feature a TNT doubleheader, starting with Carter Verhaeghe and the Panthers welcoming the Bruins before the Blues visit the Stars. Verhaeghe is making the game of hockey more inclusive – he is a proud supporter of Best Buddies, Special Olympics and the Panthers Adaptive Hockey Crew, and had them be a part of his Stanley Cup celebration this summer.

NBA Game Preview: Denver Nuggets (33-18) vs. New York Knicks (32-18)

0

The Denver Nuggets travel to Madison Square Garden to face the surging New York Knicks in a marquee Eastern-Western Conference clash. The Nuggets, led by Nikola Jokic’s triple-double prowess, look to bounce back from a recent skid, while the Knicks, riding a seven-game win streak fueled by Jalen Brunson’s scoring and a stout defense, aim to extend their dominance at home. This matchup features two playoff contenders with identical records in the standings, promising a high-intensity battle between elite big men and dynamic guards. With both teams in the top tier of their conferences, this could preview a potential Finals matchup.

Location: Madison Square Garden, New York City, New York (capacity: 19,812; iconic NBA arena known for its electric atmosphere and history of hosting high-stakes games).

Tip-Off Time: 7:00 p.m. ET (4:00 p.m. PT).

Broadcast: ESPN (national), MSG (local Knicks), Altitude 2 (local Nuggets).

Recent Team Forms

Nuggets: Denver has struggled lately, dropping three of their last five, including back-to-back losses to OKC and Detroit. They rank 5th in offensive rating (118.2) but have slipped to 12th defensively (112.5), allowing 120+ points in three straight games. Jokic continues to dominate (averaging 26.8 PPG, 12.1 RPG, 9.3 APG), but depth issues with injuries have exposed vulnerabilities.

Last 5: L 121-124 @ DET (Feb 3), L 111-121 vs OKC (Feb 1), W 122-109 vs LAC (Jan 30), W 107-103 vs BKN (Jan 29), L 109-107 vs DET (Jan 27). Form: L-L-W-W-L (averaging 113.6 PPG scored, 113.2 PPG allowed).

Knicks: New York is on fire, winning seven straight and nine of their last ten, with a +14.2 net rating during the streak. They lead the league in defensive rating (106.8) and rank 4th offensively (119.5), fueled by balanced scoring and elite rebounding. Brunson (28.4 PPG) and Towns (22.1 PPG, 12.3 RPG) form a potent duo.

Last 5: W 132-101 @ WAS (Feb 3), W 112-100 vs LAL (Feb 1), W 127-97 vs POR (Jan 30), W 119-92 @ TOR (Jan 28), W 103-87 vs SAC (Jan 27). Form: W-W-W-W-W (averaging 118.6 PPG scored, 95.4 PPG allowed).

Injury Report

Nuggets:

Out: Aaron Gordon (PF, Hamstring – expected to miss 3+ weeks), Tamar Bates (G, Foot), Spencer Jones (inactive).

Questionable/Day-to-Day: Christian Braun (SG, Ankle), Cameron Johnson (PF, Knee).

Knicks:

Out: Miles McBride (G, Ankle), Mitchell Robinson (C, Ankle), Mohamed Diawara (F, Ankle), Kevin McCullar Jr. (G, Calf).

Questionable/Day-to-Day: Josh Hart (F, Undisclosed).

These injuries weaken Denver’s frontcourt and Knicks’ bench, potentially leading to more minutes for starters like Jokic and Towns.

Key Player Matchups

Nikola Jokic (Nuggets C) vs. Karl-Anthony Towns (Knicks C): Jokic’s playmaking (9.3 APG) meets Towns’s scoring and rebounding (22.1 PPG, 12.3 RPG). Expect a high-IQ duel; Jokic exploits mismatches underneath, while Towns stretches the floor (42% 3PT).

Jamal Murray (Nuggets PG) vs. Jalen Brunson (Knicks PG): Scoring guards clash—Murray (22.4 PPG) vs. Brunson (28.4 PPG). Brunson’s efficiency (48% FG) edges Murray’s volume, but Murray’s clutch gene shines.

Michael Porter Jr. (Nuggets SF) vs. OG Anunoby (Knicks SF): Porter’s shooting (41% 3PT) tests Anunoby’s elite defense (1.8 SPG). Anunoby could limit Porter’s open looks.

Bench Impact: Peyton Watson (Nuggets) vs. Donte DiVincenzo (Knicks): With injuries, benches matter. Watson’s athleticism vs. DiVincenzo’s shooting could swing momentum.

Series History

The Knicks hold a slight all-time edge at 49-52, but recent history favors New York. The Knicks have won four of the last five meetings, including a 145-118 blowout in Denver on November 25, 2024, and a 122-112 home win on January 25, 2024. Denver’s lone recent win was a 113-100 victory at home on March 21, 2024. Over the last 10 games, the series is split 5-5, with an average margin of 10.2 points and totals going under in six. New York is 4-1 ATS in the last five.

Betting Trends

ATS: Knicks 5-0 ATS in last 5 games; 6-1 ATS last 7 on Wednesday; 20-23-1 ATS overall (9-15 road ATS for opponents). Nuggets 5-0 ATS last 5 road games; 30-21 ATS overall (18-9 road ATS). PWHL announces January’s PWHL Starting Six

Monthly award recognizes top three forwards, two defenders and one goaltender

NEW YORK AND TORONTO – The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) today announced the PWHL Starting Six for January, recognizing the top three forwards, two defenders and one goaltender based on their performance over the previous month. Forwards are selected regardless of position. The PWHL Starting Six is voted on each month by the Women’s Chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association (PHWA) and PWHL broadcast personnel.

The PWHL Starting Six for the month of January have been recognized as: Taylor Heise (F – Minnesota Frost), Kristýna Kaltounková (F – New York Sirens), Marie-Philip Poulin (F – Montréal Victoire), Nicole Gosling (D – Montréal Victoire), Megan Keller (D – Boston Fleet), Ann-Renée Desbiens (G – Montréal Victoire).

TAYLOR HEISE, F, MINNESOTA FROST

Heise led the way on offense in January, leading all players with 10 points in seven games — two more than the next closest skater — and also topped the league with eight assists for the month. Her production featured points in every game but Minnesota’s January opener and included three multi-point performances. Her month was highlighted by tying a career-high with a three-point outing on Jan. 11, when she also fired a season-high six shots on goal. The 25-year-old from Lake City, MN, generated 21 shots overall in January and posted a +7 rating, helping the Frost to four wins in seven games, with two of their losses coming in overtime. Her production also helped Minnesota secure second place in the PWHL standings, and she closed the month riding a six-game point streak. Heise’s scoring surge accounted for 62.5 percent of her season point total, as she entered January with six points and finished the month tied for first in the PWHL scoring race with 16 (3G, 13A), leading the league outright in assists heading into her first Olympic Winter Games with Team USA.

KRISTÝNA KALTOUNKOVÁ, F, NEW YORK SIRENS

Kaltounková was one of the PWHL’s most dynamic scorers in January, tallying eight points in seven games to tie for second-most in the league for the month. The Sirens’ first overall pick led all players with seven goals — two more than the next highest total — and recorded points in every game but one, including two multi-goal performances, while firing 30 shots on goal. Her production helped the Sirens to key wins, keeping New York in fourth place in the standings. After her January output, Kaltounková leads all PWHL skaters with 11 goals and tops all rookies with 12 points, holding a seven-goal lead on the next-highest first-year player. She closes the month riding a four-game point streak into Milano Cortina 2026 where she’ll represent Czechia on the Olympic stage for the first time.

MARIE-PHILIP POULIN, F, MONTRÉAL VICTOIRE

Poulin was a driving force for Montréal in January, tallying eight points in eight games to tie for second-most in the PWHL for the month. The Victoire captain recorded two overtime game-winning goals and posted points in five of eight contests, helping her team to six wins as the squad moved into third place in the standings by month’s end. Poulin finished January with five goals and three assists, including two multi-point efforts highlighted by a three-point performance in a 3-2 win over Minnesota. That game featured a highlight-reel overtime winner, as she spun in the slot and fired a backhand shot to secure the victory. Poulin also won 60.7 percent of her 151 faceoffs, a category she leads amongst players who have taken more than 10 draws this season. The five-time Canadian Olympian now sits at 14 points (7G, 7A) on the year, just two shy of the league lead, while her two game-winners sit tied for second.

NICOLE GOSLING, D, MONTRÉAL VICTOIRE

Gosling enjoyed a breakout month in January, recording all five of her career points during the month. She co-led all PWHL defenders with five points over eight games, recording one goal and four assists. Not only did the defender score her first career goal, but the tally was a game-winner, serving as the only marker in a 1-0 win for the Victoire over the Goldeneyes on Jan. 11 in Québec City. By scoring the game-winner, the fourth overall pick became just the second rookie defender in 2025-26 to score a game-winning goal, joining Riley Brengman of the Fleet. In January, the former Clarkson Golden Knight fired 12 shots on goal, and her strong production moved her into fourth place in scoring among rookie defenders.

MEGAN KELLER, D, BOSTON FLEET

Keller continued her strong start to the season, earning her a third consecutive Starting Six selection with points in three of six January games. The Fleet captain contributed two goals and one assist during the month, including a game-winning goal — her second of the season — making her the only defender in the PWHL with more than one game-winner this season. Keller also added a power-play goal in January, bringing her season total to four and maintaining her lead among all PWHL players in that category. The three-time U.S. Olympian generated 15 shots on goal and averaged 27:10 of ice time in January, while her season-long 26:50 average ranks second in the league, underscoring her role on both ends of the ice as Boston remains atop the PWHL standings at the Olympic break.

ANN-RENÉE DESBIENS, G, MONTRÉAL VICTOIRE

Desbiens was dominant in net for Montréal in January, posting a 0.99 goals-against average and .957 save percentage, the best marks among PWHL goaltenders with multiple starts. She recorded a league-leading two shutouts, allowed just seven goals, and helped the Victoire to six wins and a single loss. The netminder, who played a league-high 425 minutes in January and made 155 saves, became the first PWHL goaltender to reach 30 career victories, reaching the milestone in a 3-1 win against Ottawa on Jan. 24. Desbiens’ play backstopped Montréal into third place in the standings by month’s end, and the goaltender ended the month riding a three-game win streak heading into her third Olympic Winter Games with Canada. For the season, she leads the league in GAA (1.15) and save percentage (.954) and is tied for the league lead in shutouts (3) and wins (9).
