‘Canes sign Ronan Seeley to Entry-Level Contract

Defenseman ranked tied for fifth in goals among WHL defensemen in 2020-21

 

RALEIGH, N.C. – Don Waddell, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has signed defenseman Ronan Seeley to a three-year, entry-level contract. The deal will pay Seeley $750,000 at the NHL level in 2021-22 and 2022-23 and $775,000 in 2023-24. Seeley will receive $80,000 at the American Hockey League (AHL) level for all three seasons. He will also receive a signing bonus of $195,000.

 

“Despite two shortened seasons in the WHL, Seeley’s progression has been terrific. His ability to transport the puck and play fast defensively is what we’re looking for in our defensemen,” said Waddell. “We’re excited to watch him continue his development in our organization for another three years.”

 

Seeley, 19, registered 17 points (5g, 12a) in 23 games with the Everett Silvertips of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in 2020-21. The 6’0”, 176-pound defensemen ranked tied for fifth in goals and tied for second in plus/minus (+18) among WHL blueliners. Seeley led all Silvertips defensemen in goals and points and ranking second in assists while serving as one of the team’s alternate captains. He has now recorded 58 points (9g, 49a) in 138 career WHL games from 2018-21. The Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, native also played for Canada White at the 2018 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. Seeley was selected by Carolina in the seventh round, 208th overall, of the 2020 NHL Draft.

Flames Sign Defenseman Jeremie Poirier To Entry-Level Contract

Calgary, AB – The Calgary Flames announce today that they have signed 2020 third-round draft pick, defenseman Jeremie Poirier to a three-year entry-level contract.

 

Poirier, a native of Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Quebec was selected by the Flames 72nd overall in the 2020 NHL draft. The 19-year-old is currently a member of the Saint John Sea Dogs (QMJHL) where he finished last season second on his team in scoring with nine goals and 28 assists for 37 points over 33 games. Poirier’s draft year saw him notch 20 goals and 33 assists for 53 points in 64 games in 2019-20, finishing the season with the most goals by a defenseman in the QMJHL.

PREVIEW: Orlando Pride Travel to Face OL Reign on Sunday

Pride return from international break and begin two-game road trip

 

ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando Pride (7-5-7, 28 points) travels to the west coast to take on OL Reign (10-7-2, 32 points) this Sunday, Sept. 26 at Cheney Stadium. Kickoff for the match is set for 7 p.m. ET, with the contest exclusively available to stream exclusively on Twitch.

 

“It’s never easy when you’re making that [cross-country] trip but we expect there’s going to be great competition there and I think everyone is excited about playing against that [Reign] roster. It’s a very talented roster,” interim Head Coach Becky Burleigh said. “They just have a lot of talent, especially in their front six. That’s a group that can do things that other things can’t and then you back that up with a solid defense, and they’re a pretty complete team. We have to all be committed to being on the same page in what we do defensively as a team.”

 

Sunday will serve as the second matchup between the two sides this season and the Pride’s first visit to Tacoma since 2019. In the last fixture between the two sides, goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris tallied 10 saves and her fifth-consecutive penalty save of the calendar year on July 24.

 

Prior to the international break, the Pride defeated Racing Louisville 3-1 on Sept. 11 in downtown Orlando. The victory served as Orlando’s third-consecutive result, adding to the Club’s 1-1 draw against Houston on Sept. 5 and 1-0 victory over Gotham on Aug. 29. Sydney Leroux, Marta and Alex Morgan all found the back of the net for the Pride, in what was the most goals scored in a home match this season.

 

With Leroux’s latest strike, she climbed to eight goals on the season, tying her for most in the league with OL Reign’s Bethany Balcer. Teammates Marta and Taylor Kornieck continue to lead the Pride in assists, each with three on the year. The Pride also have four players with two assists apiece.

 

Between the international break and a forfeited match, OL Reign has not played a game since Sept. 4 when the club took on Racing Louisville FC. OL Reign went down early, but Balcer was able to score in the 74th minute, securing the 1-1 draw for the Reign.

 

Balcer currently leads OL Reign with eight goals on the season. Jess Fishlock has recorded four assists on the year, leading the side in the category.

 

Following Saturday’s match, the Pride will play it’s second-consecutive road match, traveling to take on the Chicago Red Stars on Saturday, Oct. 2nd. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET at SeatGeek Stadium.

HOUSTON – Houston Dynamo FC travel to Allianz Field on Saturday to face Minnesota United for the third and final meeting of the regular season.

Houston looks to extend their unbeaten run to four games after defeating FC Dallas 3-2 on Saturday in the final leg of the Texas Derby. Forward Griffin Dorsey scored his second goal of the season and tallied an assist against Dallas. Dorsey earned MLSSoccer.com Team of the Week honors following his performance on Saturday. Attacker Darwin Quintero earned his third start of the season and scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot in the second half from the penalty spot.

Forward Fafa Picault scored his 10th goal of the season and matched his regular season record for most goals in a single season. Picault is the seventh player in Dynamo history to score double digit goals in a season and the first player since Mauro Manotas scored 13 goals in 2019. Picault has scored eight goals and tallied an assist in his last 10 games, beginning with a goal against Austin FC on Aug. 4 at Q2 Stadium.

Minnesota won the first two meetings of the regular season, which includes a 2-0 victory at Allianz Field earlier this season. Houston is looking for their first victory in the series since a 3-0 triumph at BBVA Stadium on Sept. 2, 2020.

The Loons defeated the LA Galaxy at home to snap a two-game losing streak. The Loons were shut out in their back-to-back losses to the Seattle Sounders and Sporting Kansas City earlier this month. A brace from Emanuel Reynoso and a goal from Ethan Finlay led the Loons to their ninth victory of the season last Saturday.

The Dynamo return to BBVA Stadium on Wednesday, Sept. 29 to host Vancouver for the third and final meeting of the season. Houston defeated Vancouver 2-1 in their first meeting at BBVA Stadium on May 22.

Here are three key points ahead of Saturday’s game:

FAFA PICAULT JOINS MANOTAS AND CHING: Dynamo forward Fafa Picault scored his 10th goal of the season in Houston’s 3-2 victory over FC Dallas on Saturday. The New York native has now scored seven goals in his last eight games and he is the seventh player in club history to reach the double-digit milestone with the club after scoring against his former club on Saturday. Picault is the first player to score 10 or more goals in a single season since Mauro Manotas scored 13 goals in 2019. Picault’s run ranks among the best in club history, matching a 10-game stretch from Manotas in 2018 and nearly reaching a 10-game run from Brian Ching in 2008 where he scored 8 goals and tallied two assists that summer.

DYNAMO FACE DIRECT RIVALS: Five of the next six games for Houston are against direct rivals for the top half of the Western Conference table. Houston will look to extend its recent positive run to claw into a tight Western Conference playoffs picture that changes week to week. Houston needs a positive result on Saturday against the Loons, who currently sit in seventh place, to inch their way up the table and make up ground on an eight-point deficit. Houston’s form on the road will be key as two of their next three games are away from BBVA Stadium, including their next nationally televised fixture on Oct. 3 against Sporting Kansas City.

MINNESOTA MAKES STATEMENT AT HOME: Minnesota rebounded with authority on Saturday after dropping back-to-back games against the Seattle Sounders and Sporting Kansas City. Seattle edged past the Loons with a 1-0 victory on Sept. 11 and Kansas City held Minnesota scoreless in their 4-0 victory at Children’s Mercy Park on Sept. 15. The Loons responded with a 3-0 victory over the LA Galaxy on Saturday with a brace from Emanuel Reynoso and a goal from Ethan Finlay.

Lions continue three-game road stint at league leaders

ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando City SC (10-7-8, 38 points) continues on the road this weekend, set to take on MLS-leading New England Revolution (18-4-5, 59 points) on Saturday, Sept. 25 at Gillette Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET with coverage set to begin at 6:30 p.m. ET on FOX35 PLUS.

Saturday’s match, presented by Exploria Resorts, will also be available to stream on LionNation TV in addition to being transmitted on 96.9 The Game in English and Acción 97.9FM, 810AM in Spanish.

“Another opportunity for us to bounce back in terms of the results. Obviously we recognize that we haven’t had a good period here in the last two weeks, but now we’re going against a team who has done a good job so far and that just gives us the opportunity to have a result that can bring again our best hopes for the rest of the season,” Head Coach Oscar Pareja said ahead of the match. “We’re clear on that and New England is a team who has done a good job. They’re having a good moment, but for sure we’re going to be competing with optimism and the same state of mind of trying to get a result.”

The Lions enter the match after dropping a 3-1 decision to the Philadelphia Union at Subaru Park this past Sunday. Ruan scored the lone goal for the Lions in the match, serving as his second in as many matches for the Club. The side was reduced to 10 men late in the match, with Antonio Carlos being shown a red card, making him unavailable for Saturday’s fixture.

Nani leads the Lions with nine goals this season, set to return to the side after serving a one-game suspension this past week along with teammate Andrés Perea. Mauricio Pereyra leads the side with nine assists, having extended his team-high with the helper on Ruan’s finish in Philadelphia.

The Revs come into Saturday’s match after taking a 3-2 victory from the Chicago Fire at the midweek. A stoppage time game-winner from Carles Gil secured all three points for the Revs on the road, clinching them a spot in the 2021 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs.

Gustavo Bou leads the Revolution with 12 goals this season, followed by Buksa with 11. Carles Gil leads all of MLS in assists in 2021, with 16 to his credit.

Following Saturday’s match, the Lions close out their three-game road trip with a visit to Nashville SC on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at Nissan Stadium in an 8:30 p.m. ET kickoff on FOX35 PLUS.

Greinke scratched, placed on IL; Bielak to start tonight

OAKLAND, CA – RHP Zack Greinke has been scratched from tonight’s start and placed on the 10-day Injured List due to neck soreness. RHP Brandon Bielak will start tonight’s game at Oakland.

Greinke’s IL stint is retroactive to Tuesday, Sept. 21. RHP Peter Solomon has been recalled from Triple A Sugar Land to replace Greinke on the Major League active roster.

Bielak’s last appearance was a start on Sept. 17 vs. Arizona (2.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 SO, 55 pitches). For the season, he is 3-3 in 27 appearances (1 GS) with a 4.21 ERA and one save. On April 4 at Oakland, Bielak hurled 4.2 hitless, scoreless innings in relief to earn the victory in a 9-2 Astros win.
