White Sox recall Matt Foster from Class AAA Charlotte

CHICAGO – Prior to tonight’s series opener vs. Kansas City, the Chicago White Sox recalled right-handed pitcher Matt Foster from Class AAA Charlotte.

 

Foster, 26, is 2-1 with 6.04 ERA (19 ER/28.1 IP), one save and 33 strikeouts in 27 games over two stints with the White Sox this season. He made the Opening Day roster before being optioned to Charlotte on July 16, and also served as the 27th player for a doubleheader on July 19 vs. Minnesota.

 

Foster made six appearances with the Knights, going 0-1 with a 1.42 ERA (1 ER/6.1 IP) and 11 strikeouts.

Pirates claim LHP Anthony Banda off waivers from Mets

The Pirates have claimed LHP Anthony Banda off waivers from the New York Mets.

 

The 27-year-old Banda (turns 28 on August 10) began the 2021 season in the San Francisco organization with Triple-A Sacramento before being acquired by the Mets in exchange for infielder Will Toffey on 7/2. He made five relief appearances with New York this season, picking up a victory in his first appearance on 7/19 at Cincinnati. He was designated for assignment on Saturday (7/31).

 

Originally selected by Milwaukee in the 10th round of the 2012 First-Year-Player Draft, Banda was traded to Arizona on 7/31/14 and made his Major League debut with the Diamondbacks in 2017. He also spent parts of three seasons (2018-2020) with Tampa Bay after being acquired by the Rays as part of a three-team deal on 2/2/18.

 

In 23 big league games (five starts), Banda has posted a 5-3 record, one save and a 6.14 ERA (58.2ip/40er).

Astros claim Jacob Wilson off waivers from A’s

HOUSTON, TX – The Houston Astros have claimed IF Jacob Wilson off of waivers from the Oakland A’s. The announcement was made by Astros General Manager James Click.

 

Wilson, 31, has spent the majority of his 2021 season at Triple A Las Vegas, hitting .288 (53×184) with 17 doubles, 14 homers and 46 RBI, while posting a 1.016 OPS (.385 OBP / .630 SLG) in 49 games. He earned his first call-up to the Major Leagues in July and appeared in six games for the A’s, going 1×7, before being designated for assignment on Friday. Wilson has appeared in 802 career minor league games, over the span of 10 years, spending time with the Cardinals (2012-17), Nationals (2018-19) and A’s (2021) organizations. Wilson has been optioned to Triple A Sugar Land.

 

To make room for Wilson on the Astros 40-man roster, the club transferred RHP Tyler Ivey to the Major League 60-day Injured List.

Mets claim RHP Jake Reed

FLUSHING, N.Y., – The New York Mets today announced the club has claimed RHP Jake Reed off waivers from Tampa Bay. He will report to Miami to be part of New York’s taxi squad.

 

Reed, 28, has appeared in six games, one start with the Los Angeles Dodgers this year. He has allowed five hits, two earned runs, walked two and struck out five over 5.1 innings. He began the year in the Angels organization, before signing with the Dodgers on June 4. Reed was designated for assignment and claimed by Tampa Bay on July 25. He was designated by the Rays on July 30.

 

In 18 minor league games this season, the 6-2, 195-pounder has struck out 28 in 22.1 innings, earned one save with a 5.24 ERA. Overall, he is 19-14 with 22 saves, 360 strikeouts and a 3.72 ERA (142 earned runs/344.0 innings) in 234 minor league games.

Designated for assignment by the Rays on July 30…began the season in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ organization before being traded to Tampa Bay for cash considerations on May 18.

Appeared in 4 games with the Pirates (3 G) and Rays (1 G) this season and posted a 6.75 ERA (4 ER in 5.1 IP).

In 21 combined games with Triple-A Indianapolis (Pirates) and Triple-A Durham (Rays) in 2021, was 3-3 with 2 saves, a 1.95 ERA (7 ER in 32.1 IP) and a .228 opponent average.

Spent the majority of the 2020 season at the Minnesota Twins’ Alternate Training Site…pitched in 6 games with the Twins (4.70 ERA; 4 ER in 7.2 IP).

Brewers add veteran reliever John Axford from Blue Jays

Franchise Single-Season Saves Leader Acquired for Cash Considerations

 

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee Brewers have acquired right-handed reliever John Axford from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for cash considerations. Axford will join the team tonight. A corresponding roster move will be announced later. The announcement was made by President of Baseball Operations David Stearns.

 

Axford will retain his uniform number 59 as bench coach Pat Murphy switches to number 00.

 

Axford, 38, spent the first five seasons (2009-13) of his Major League career in Milwaukee, where he went 21-19 with a 3.35 ERA and 106 saves in 268 appearances. He is the all-time franchise leader in saves for a single season (46 in 2011) and ranks second in franchise history to Dan Plesac (133) in career saves. His 43 consecutive saves without a blown save in 2011 is a franchise record.

 

Axford, who has not pitched in the Major Leagues since 2018, began the 2021 season as a studio analyst for Blue Jays television. He then pitched for Team Canada in the Olympic qualifier before Toronto signed him to a Minor League contract on June 24. He went 1-0 with a 0.84 ERA and 2 saves in 9 relief appearances at Triple-A Buffalo, holding opponents to a .061 batting average (10.2ip, 2h, 1r, 1er, 3bb, 14k).

 

Axford owns a career record of 38-34 with a 3.87 ERA and 144 saves in 543 games (1 start) during 10 Major League seasons with Milwaukee (2009-13), St. Louis (2013), Cleveland (2014), Pittsburgh (2014), Colorado (2015), Oakland (2016-17), Toronto (2018) and Los Angeles-NL (2018).

White Sox option Jimmy Lambert to Class AAA Charlotte

CHICAGO – Following today’s series finale vs. Cleveland, the Chicago White Sox optioned right-handed pitcher Jimmy Lambert to Class AAA Charlotte.

 

Lambert, 26, received a no decision today after allowing one run on two hits with one walk and two strikeouts in 3.0 IP. He is 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA (8 ER/8.0 IP) and eight strikeouts in three appearances (two starts) with the White Sox this season.

 

The White Sox will make a corresponding roster move prior to Tuesday night’s series opener vs. Kansas City.

Dodgers activate Mookie Betts, select Jefry Ramírez

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers activated outfielder Mookie Betts from the injured list, selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Yefry Ramírez and optioned right-handed pitcher Mitch White and infielder/outfielder Zach McKinstry to Triple-A. In order to make room on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers transferred right-handed pitcher Jimmie Sherfy to the 60-day injured list.

 

Betts, 28, returns from the injured list after missing 11 games with left hip irritation. He was hitting .700 (7-for-10) with four doubles, one homer in his three games after the All-Star break. On the season, the five-time All-Star is hitting .270 (85-for-315) with 14 homers and 40 RBI in 82 games. He is in his eighth Major League season and is a .298 hitter with 169 homers and 549 RBI in 931 career games. He was originally acquired by the Dodgers on February 10, 2020 along with David Price from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for outfielder Alex Verdugo and minor league Connor Wong and Jeter Downs.

 

Ramírez, 27, was 3-3 with a 5.49 ERA (38 ER/62.1 IP) and 70 strikeouts in 15 games (12 starts) for Oklahoma City this season. He has spent parts of two seasons in Major Leagues with Baltimore (2018-19) and Pittsburgh (2019), going a combined 1-10 with a 6.32 ERA (63 ER/89.2 IP) and 89 strikeouts in 30 games (13 starts). In his minor league career, he is 43-39 with a 3.75 ERA (278 ER/667.1 IP) and 679 strikeouts in 152 career games. He signed with the Dodgers as a minor league free agent on March 25.

 

White, 25, made the start last night, allowing two runs in 3.2 innings with a career-matching best five strikeouts. He has appeared in 15 games (one start) for the Dodgers this season, posting an 0-0 mark with a 3.75 ERA (10 ER/24.0 IP) and 25 strikeouts. The former second rounder out of Santa Clara University is 1-0 with a 3.33 ERA (10 ER/27.0 IP) in parts of two seasons with the Dodgers.

 

McKinstry, 26, has appeared in 58 games for the Dodgers this season, batting .217 with seven homers and 29 RBI. In six minor league seasons in the Dodgers organization, he has hit a combined .271 (336-for-1242) with 30 homers and 149 RBI across five different levels. He was originally drafted by the Dodgers in the 33rd round of Central Michigan University in the 2016 First Year Player Draft.
