GAME RECAP: Argos hand Bombers first loss with commanding Home win

0

TORONTO — In his first career start under centre for the Toronto Argonauts, Nick Arbuckle handed Winnipeg their first loss of the season, orchestrating a 30-23 win.

The 27-year old looked calm, cool and collected during the heat of the game as finished his day with 23 of 32 passes completed for 310 yards, a passing and a rushing touchdown.

In an effort to move the ball against a stout defence, the Argos dished out a balanced attack. This included rushing attempts from John White and even a fake flea-flicker from DaVaris Daniels, the Argos were in Bombers’ territory and looking to score. D.J. Foster would end the Argos drive with six points after collecting a handoff from Arbuckle, bulldozing his way over Bomber defenders and over the goal line.

Looking to retaliate, Zach Collaros and the Bombers took the field.

Their subsequent drive would survive all of one play as after Brady Oliveira‘s forward progress gained the Bombers a pair of yards, Collaros was picked off by Dexter McCoil, putting the ball back in Arbuckle’s hands.

After sacrificing a season-high 13 points against in the first quarter and threatening to score again, a pair of game-altering plays by Winnipeg would help them close in on the Toronto lead.

It started with Winnipeg’s defence as a completely unblocked Jackson Jeffcoat met Arbuckle in the backfield, dislodging the ball from his clutch. With the ball wobbling at his feet, Jesse Briggs scooped and scored, stopping the onslaught of Argos offence. The Bombers’ offence would add another big play as after having only eight yards of offence in the first quarter, Collaros would find a wide-open Darvin Adams who had exploded up the sideline, beating Jamal Peters for a touchdown. This would bring the Bombers within range of the 16-14 Argonaut lead.

The Argos and Arbuckle would not go quietly into the Toronto night as he could deliver a strike to DaVaris Daniels in the endzone for a 35-yard touchdown for a big play of their own to increase the lead to eight points.

Just as fast as things going right for Toronto in the first half, they went south just as fast as in the opening seconds of the third quarter.

After DaVaris Daniels, who 100 receiving yards at the moment, suffered an injury from a thundering hit by Brandon Alexander, things compounded as Jeffcoat would find himself in the Argos backfield again to force a Toronto punt which was almost blocked. This would happen yet again. This time, it was by Alexander who collected the fumble, setting the Bombers shop up yet again. For the Argonaut’s sake, Darvin Adams would drop a pass from Collaros, forcing the Bombers to settle for a field goal.

Looking to respond with the ball on the 1-yard line after a 31-yard reception by Dejon Brissett, Arbuckle called his one number, forcing his way through the wall of double blue for a touchdown, increasing the lead to 30-15 and stopping the bleeding.

While things opened going Winnipeg’s way, another two-and-out would set the stage for Mike Miller who would make CFL history. After bringing down Daniel Braverman, Miller would record his 191st special teams tackle, passing former BC Lion Jason Arakgi who finished with 190 making him the new all-time leader in the category.

Winnipeg would try to find some answers late in the fourth quarter working against the clock. Collaros would connect with Kenny Lawler, setting the Bombers up in Argos territory. After being stuffed on first and second down, a third-down conversion would give the Bombers a pulse. In connecting with Rasheed Bailey in the endzone, the Bomers drew within seven.

In the final two minutes of the game, the Argos did not let up. Picking up 40 yards on their first play, the Argos continued to pour it on the Bombers’ defence. Once they crossed into Bombers territory, the Arbuckle would kneel out the final seconds on the clock, celebrating in jubilation with his teammates within plays.

Next up for the Toronto Argonauts will be a flight to Edmonton to take on the Elks, Thursday at 7:30 p.m. ET. Winnipeg will fly back home and welcome the Calgary Stampeders in a Saturday night matchup.

CFL Preview: Redblacks meet to Cap Week 3 in Regina

0

REGINA — Fresh off their bye week, the Ottawa REDBLACKS will travel to Mosaic Stadium to take on the undefeated Saskatchewan Roughriders.

In Week 1, it was the REDBLACKS secondary that stole the show, holding the Edmonton Elks touchdown-less. Abdul Kanneh was arguably the most impactful player in that secondary, picking off Trevor Harris twice and returning one back to the house for a pick-six.

In doing their best to replicate that performance against another strong-armed, accurate quarterback in Cody Fajardo, REDBLACKS defensive coordinator, Mike Benevides believes his guys have all the energy to do it again.

“That’s one thing that’s never failed,” said Benevides. “The energy is there, you take a look at Micah (Awe) and Avery (Williams), they’re the guys who continuously keep the pieces together, physical players with a tremendous amount of aggression and intensity and at the end of the day, they’re 12 guys playing like a bunch of bullies with attitude and a sense of purpose.”

In Riderville, the team is preparing for their first game of the season without former 2019 CFL All-Star wide receiver, Shaq Evans, who suffered an injury during Saturday’s game against Hamilton. In preaching the “next man up” mentality, Riders’ head coach, Craig Dickenson isn’t too worried about how his team will fare without him.

“I think we’ve got good players in house that will pick up the slack,” said Dickenson. “The rest of us on offence know what we need to do, maybe a touch extra, but if we just play within ourselves and within the system, I believe we’re going to be alright. Next man up and we wish Shaq a speedy recovery.”

With Evans sidelined, Brayden Lenius is looking to fill his shoes and contribute on the offensive side of the ball.

“Even when Shaq is here, I still take that initiative on myself to step up and be someone in that role that is there for Cody at all times,” said Lenius. “It sucks having Shaq down, that’s our boy, but we’re going to love him up and he’s going to be back soon. But, yes, now that he’s out, we all have to step up, not just myself.”

With only a single game played this season, the book has yet to be out on this 2021 Ottawa REDBLACKS offence. Being held to just field goals against the Edmonton Elks, their lethality has yet to be gauged. That being said, quarterback, Matt Nichols has the resume of someone who can bet teams vertically as he tallied 15 touchdown passes in 2019.

The question posed to Roughriders offensive coordinator, Jason Shivers, this week was just how he plans to defend that.

“LaPo is a great OC. He can hit you from all different angles,” said Shivers. “I’m expecting them to come in and throw the ball with Matt. he’s a good quarterback, he can get the ball out quick, he’s pretty accurate. I’m looking for the passing game, but I also think that they’re going to try and run the ball a lot more against us just to try and establish some sort of rhythm with their offence.”

Against Edmonton, Ottawa carried out a balanced game plan, utilizing both the pass and the run. While neither of them saw them get into the end zone, the 20 passing attempts by Nichols and the 16 rushing attempts by a variety of ball carries kept Edmonton on their toes.

Saskatchewan’s defence, who has allowed the second-least points (37), will have to do exactly that this weekend.

Catch kickoff at 7:00 p.m ET Saturday evening on TSN, ESPN+ and follow along on CFL.ca’s Game Tracker.

Game Recap: Rookie QB Maier leads Stamps past Als for 1st win of season

0

CALGARY — Rookie quarterback Jake Maier led the Calgary Stampeders to their first win of the season with a 28-22 victory over the Montreal Alouettes at McMahon Stadium on Friday night.

The 24-year-old stepped up in place of injured starter Bo Levi Mitchell and passed for 304 yards and a touchdown in his first career CFL start.

Montreal nearly pulled off a stunning comeback in the final seconds, but a promising drive fell short at the goal line after receiver Eugene Lewis was prevented from breaking the plane as time expired.

The Stampeders (1-2) bounced back after losing their first two games at home, while the Alouettes are now 1-1 following the Week 3 loss.

Maier got off to a rocky start in the first quarter, throwing a pair of interceptions that Montreal converted into touchdowns. But the quarterback bounced back to lead a long touchdown drive in the second quarter, and Rene Paredes’ second field of the game cut the Als’ lead down to just two points entering halftime.

Maier’s confidence continued to grow in the third as the Stamps stormed back to claim the lead following his first-ever CFL touchdown pass — a four-yard strike to Kamar Jorden. Calgary went up 21-14 after the Als surrendered a safety, and undisciplined play hindered Montreal in the second half with numerous costly penalties.

A one-yard touchdown run from running back Ka’Deem Carey extended the Stamps’ lead in the fourth quarter, but Montreal regained momentum after the three minute warning when Vernon Adams Jr. threw a 10-yard touchdown to Quan Bray following a strong drive.

David Côté kicked the convert to cut Calgary’s lead down to six points, but that was as close as Montreal would get.

Calgary’s Josh Huff led all receivers with a game-high 128 yards on five receptions, while Markeith Ambles also had a strong performance with five catches for 113 yards.

But the promising opening drive sputtered after Maier’s first throw was almost intercepted by Alouettes corner Wesley Sutton. Calgary settled for a 39-yard field goal from Paredes following another incompletion.

Sutton seized the next opportunity that came his way on Calgary’s next drive, as he picked off Maier on an underthrown deep ball intended for receiver Hergy Mayala. Adams came through with a 26-yard run on the ensuing drive, and the quarterback was bailed out when his fumble was quickly recovered by Montreal receiver Kaion Julien-Grant.

The play set up a first-and-goal, and the Als claimed the lead two plays later when Adams hooked up with Jake Wieneke for their second touchdown connection of the season. The six-foot-four receiver high pointed the ball at the back of the end zone to beat Calgary’s Branden Dozier, and Côté kicked the convert to put Montreal up 7-3.

Maier responded with a big 39-yard strike down the right sideline to Ambles for his first CFL completion, and Richie Sindani followed it up with a tremendous one-handed catch off a deflection. But the drive was suddenly shut down one play later when Montreal’s Adarius Pickett intercepted Maier’s screen pass intended for Carey, returning the pick 17 yards.

Lewis then came up with one of the biggest plays of the game to sustain the ensuing Montreal drive, as he stretched out to make a 28-yard toe-tapping catch while falling out of bounds.

Adams brought Montreal closer to the end zone with back-to-back completions to B.J. Cunningham as the second quarter got underway, and running back William Stanback capped off the drive with a three-yard touchdown run. Côté added the extra point to extend Montreal’s lead to 11 points.

Calgary’s defence stepped up later in the quarter to halt the momentum when Royce Metchie picked off Adams as he tried to complete a pass to Cunningham in tight coverage. Ambles started the Stamps drive off by showcasing his playmaking ability on a 25-yard catch-and-run, and Maier began to find a rhythm with a 15-yard pass to Ambles and a seven-yard pass to Mayala.

The young quarterback followed it up with a 16-yard pass to Colton Hunchak after evading defensive pressure, with the receiver being stopped just short of the goal line. Carey finished the long scoring drive off one play later with a one-yard touchdown run, but Calgary’s two-point conversion attempt came up short when Maier’s pass to Ante Milanovic-Litre fell incomplete.

Paredes nailed a 52-yard field goal with just over a minute remaining in the half to move Calgary within two points at 14-12.

Calgary’s defence continued to frustrate Adams in the third quarter, and the quarterback struggled to get on the same page as his receivers. Momentum continued to shift in Calgary’s favour, with Maier appearing more confident with every completion.

Penalties against Montreal helped the Stamps’ offence move into scoring range, and Maier proceeded to complete a 14-yard play-action pass to Huff with pressure in his face. Maier finished the drive with his first-ever CFL touchdown pass on a four-yard completion to Jorden. Paredes’ extra point gave Calgary a 19-14 lead.

The Stamps defence forced three two and outs in the third quarter, and Calgary added two points to its lead when the Als conceded a safety.

Calgary’s offence kept things rolling in the fourth quarter by pulling off a flea flicker for big yardage, with Maier completing an 83-yard deep shot to Huff. The Calgary receiver beat Sutton on the play and almost scored before being tackled at the one-yard line by Monshadrik Hunter.

Another untimely Montreal penalty kept the drive going after it appeared Calgary would have to settle for a field goal, and Carey made the Als pay with another one-yard touchdown run. Paredes kicked the convert to extend the Stamps’ lead to 14 points with under ten minutes to play.

Montreal added its first point of the half after a missed field goal attempt was declared dead in the end zone, and a major opportunity opened up later in the fourth when the Stamps fumbled a snap. Hindered by poor timing, the snap hit an unaware Mayala as the receiver crossed the formation in motion.

Montreal’s offence capitalized with its strongest drive off the half, and Adams capped it off with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Bray. Côté added the convert to move Montreal within six points. Adams led a final comeback drive in the final minute after Montreal forced a late punt, with the dynamic quarterback moving the ball down the field with four quick completions.

Adams kept the drive alive on third down with an 11-yard run in Calgary territory, but the drive ultimately fell short at the goal line three plays later when Lewis was unable to break the plane on a 13-yard catch.

The Alouettes will host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in their first home game of the season next Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET, while the Stampeders will face the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on the road next Sunday at 7 p.m. ET.
