CFL Preview: Lions, Redblacks cap off week 6 in Vancouver

0

VANCOUVER — The BC Lions will be back at home in BC Place for just the second time this season and after a week off, they will be picking up where they left off, facing the Ottawa REDBLACKS.

The Lions got the best of the REDBLACKS in a rain soaked 24-12 win in the nation’s capital in Week 4 of league action.

Despite the weather, the Orange and Black offence exploded, especially in the passing game. Michael Reilly looked phenomenal in the game, gashing the Ottawa secondary for 301 yards passing, including a 46-yard touchdown to Jevon Cottoy to put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter.

In the wake of the great outing from the Leos, BC head coach Rick Campbell knows that his team will have to compete hard on Saturday as they get set to face Ottawa once again.

“It’s always hard to beat anybody twice, because it’s pro football,” said Campbell. “This game just doesn’t feel like that, they’ve played a game in between, we’ve had a bye week, so it really feels like two independent games, that other one is in the rear-view mirror and we’re just going to focus on Saturday.”

As the Lions prepare to defend BC Place against the REDBLACKS they will be doing so without two of their primary pass catching options in Dominique Rhymes and Lemar Durant, both of whom suffered injuries in the Week 4 matchup in Ottawa.

Rhymes and Durant have been a complimentary part to the BC offence, combining for 284 receiving yards on 24 receptions. Behind Lucky Whitehead and Bryan Burnham, Durant has accumulated the third most receiving yards for the Lions, while averaging 12.8 yards per catch.

However, the loss of Durant and Rhymes may provide opportunity for some of the other BC wide receivers to make an impact.

“It sucks to see when your guys go down like that, seeing Rhymes go down and seeing Lamar go down,” said BC receiver Shaq Johnson. “But, that’s the business right, we have to pick it up and it’s next man up.”

Second year wide receiver, Cottoy had a breakout game against the REDBLACKS in their previous meeting catching all five of his targets for 93 yards. Cottoy’s 93 yards and 31 yards after catch led all Lions receivers for Week 4.

The Orange and Black have also begun working running back Shaq Cooper into their offensive scheming. In his first two games of the season, Cooper has carried the ball 20 times compiling 106 yards on the ground.

Against the REDBLACKS in Week 4 Cooper saw a significant boost in his role with the team. The first year Lion was the feature back for BC, carrying the ball 14 times for 71 yards and an average of 5.1 yards per carry.

Saturday’s matchup will feature new faces on offence for the opposing REDBLACKS as well. Following an impressive outing in Week 5 against the Montreal Alouettes, Ottawa has decided to start Dominique Davis at quarterback in place of Matt Nichols.

The REDBLACKS lost 51-29 in a battle with the Alouettes, however the silver lining for Ottawa came in the form of their back up quarterback.

When Davis’ number was called, he answered with authority. The sixth-year quarterback completed 23 of his 33 passing attempts for 291 yards and two touchdowns. Davis would also add 38 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown to his 2021 season debut. Davis’ 291 passing yards are the most thrown by an Ottawa quarterback this season.

The presence of Davis under centre provides some flexibility for the Ottawa offence that they may be looking to exploit against the Lions on Saturday. Davis is not afraid to air out the deep ball and is a threat to score with his legs in red zone situations.

As the starting quarterback for Ottawa in 2019, Davis threw for 2,216 yards and five touchdowns, while carrying the ball 31 times for 115 yards and 6 touchdowns. However, the Achilles heel for Davis has been his inability to limit turnovers, throwing 14 interceptions in 2019.

Davis’ performance for the REDBLACKS in Week 5 provides some optimism for the Ottawa offence, however for the Lions, they remain focused on playing a complete game regardless of who is under centre.

“I think we have to play well to beat either one of them,” said Campbell. “I don’t see them changing much up of what they’re doing scheme wise, regardless of who’s in there.”

BC boasts an aggressive defence headlined by rookie linebacker Jordan Williams. Williams’ play has him at the centre of the Most Outstanding Rookie conversation. His 28 tackles are among the league leaders in the category, he has reeled in an interception and has found the backfield for a sack.

The Lions defensive unit will be looking to capitalize on forced turnovers and takeaway opportunities. The Lions have forced the second most takeaways in the league with 12.

However, the Lions secondary surrenders an average of 255.5 passing yards per game, which may provide the REDBLACKS with an opportunity to take chances down field. Though teams who decide to throw against BC should do so with caution.

The BC defensive backfield leads the league in interceptions, totalling seven through their first four games of the season. They also play stout defensive football around their own goal line, allowing just three passing touchdowns on the season.

The Week 6 rematch between the Lions and REDBLACKS will feel like a brand new game featuring significant changes for both sidelines, including a change at quarterback for Ottawa.

The REDBLACKS are looking for lightening to strike twice with Davis, while the Lions are still hunting for their first home win of the season.

Kickoff is slated for 10:00 p.m. ET on TSN, RDS and ESPN+ or can be followed along on CFL.ca’s Game Tracker.

CFL Preview: Stampeders, Elks meet for Rematch of the Battle of Alberta

0

EDMONTON — The second of three games on a packed Saturday afternoon of CFL action will feature a Labour Day rematch between the Calgary Stampeders and the Edmonton Elks.

In Week 5’s Labour Day Classic, Trevor Harris and the Elks exploded offensively to defeat the Stampeders 32-20. Entering Week 6 the Stamps will be travelling to Edmonton hoping to exact revenge and collect their second win of the season against their provincial rivals.

Rookie quarterback Jake Maier made CFL history as the Calgary pivot, becoming the first quarterback to throw for 300 yards in each of his first three career starts. However, this week it will be Bo Levi Mitchell making his return as the Stampeders signal caller.

Leading up to Saturday, Coach Dave Campbell was adamant on starting Mitchell, as long as the quarterback himself felt he could do so.

“If he says he’s good to go, I’m going to put him in there,” said Dickenson of Mitchell.

Mitchell will be making his first start since his Week 2 matchup against the BC Lions. The two-time Most Outstanding Player suffered a broken leg early in the season which forced him to miss the last three games.

Through the first two weeks of the 2021 season Mitchell was among the league leaders in passing yards, completing 44 of his 73 attempts for 542 passing yards and an average of 12.3 yards per catch.

In his first game back Mitchell will surely be leaning on the deep threat ability from the Calgary wide receivers, who have reeled in a league-high eight receptions of 30 yards or more.

Highlighted by the talent of Kamar Jorden, Markeith Ambles and Josh Huff, the Calgary passing offence has been among the best in the league, throwing for 1,487 passing yards while averaging nearly 300 yards per game. The trio of Ambles, Huff, and Jorden have combined for 1,062 receiving yards through their first five games.

A dangerous Stampeders passing offence is also accompanied by one of the best ground attacks in the league. Running back Ka’Deem Carey has carried the ball 57 times for Calgary and has scored a league-leading four rushing touchdowns.

Carey only saw six touches in the Battle of Alberta, something that the teams head coach is aware of and evaluating.

“I’m not going to force feed anything,” said Dickenson on his offence. “I’m going to let the defence dictate how we want to run our calls and I’m going to calls the play that I think has the most chance for success.”

As good as the Red and White offensive unit has looked to start the season, they have struggled when it comes to scoring the ball, specifically in the red zone.

Calgary has been one of the most effective teams in the league at giving themselves opportunities to score. Their 16 trips to the red zone are the most of any team, however the Stamps have only managed to score seven touchdowns.

Simply getting to the red zone will not be enough for Calgary to best what has shown to be a tough Elks defence to score on. The Elks have had to defend their own end zone nine times through four games and have allowed just four scores.

The Edmonton defence is headlined by an impressive secondary. Their defensive backfield has surrendered the fewest passing yards of any team to start the season, allowing 184.5 passing yards per game and allowing only two passing touchdowns, the fewest among all teams.

The home team Elks boast an equally as impressive offence entering Saturday’s Labour Day rematch.

In Week 5 against the Stampeders, the Elks played their most well-rounded game of the season. Harris missed on just 10 of his 41 passing attempts passing for 398 yards and four touchdowns. The Edmonton pivot had thrown just three touchdowns on the season prior to last Saturday’s game.

The Elks’ Week 5 passing attack featured eight different receivers targeted. Four Green and Gold receivers recorded games with 50 or more receiving yards, including Mike Jones who caught four of his five targets for 107 yards and a touchdown.

Saturday’s game will feature another opportunity for the Double E to exploit a Calgary defence that has been susceptible to allowing big passing plays.

The Stamps defence has allowed the most air yards in the league allowing teams to pass 1,598 total yards and an average of 319.6 per game. They have also shown to be vulnerable defending the pass on first down, allowing a league high 100 passing first downs.

Calgary’s defensive struggles have not gone unnoticed by the players, and they remain focused on correcting their mistakes and maintaining intensity for four quarters.

“First, start off that way and then for the rest of the game keep the intensity,” said third year linebacker Jameer Thurman. “We have to be on point on every single play of the game.”

As Mitchell looks to revitalize the Stampeders with their second win of the season, the Elks will be defending their home turf looking to bring their fans the first home win of their season.

If last week’s Labour Day Classic is any indication of what is to come, this Saturday’s Labour Day rematch is sure to bring fans an intense, hard-nosed football game.

Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. ET on TSN, RDS and ESPN+ and can also be followed along on CFL.ca’s Game Tracker.

GAME RECAP: Argos hold off Ti-Cats to claim 1st place in East

0

TORONTO — The Toronto Argonauts claimed first place in the East Division after holding off the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for a 17-16 win on Friday night at BMO Field to kick off Week 6.

The Ticats were a point away from tying the game in the final two minutes after a 21-yard touchdown run by Sean Thomas-Erlington, but Michael Domagala’s extra point attempt nailed the right upright to deny Hamilton the equalizer.

The Argos now hold a 3-2 record after bouncing back from their 32-19 loss to the Ticats four days prior in the Mark’s Labour Day Classic.

Toronto carried a 14-7 lead into halftime thanks to a QB sneak touchdown by Nick Arbuckle and an electric 40-yard touchdown by D.J. Foster. A 26-yard field goal by Boris Bede extended Toronto’s lead in the third quarter, but a 28-yard field goal by Domagala moved Hamilton back within a touchdown in the fourth.

Backup quarterback David Watford entered the game with just over six minutes to play after Dane Evans injured his hip on a sack by Shawn Oakman. Arbuckle threw a late interception that led to the touchdown by Thomas-Erlington, but the Ticats were unable to complete the comeback.

Toronto’s defence generated significant defensive pressure throughout the game and finished with four sacks along with an interception by Henoc Muamba.

Argos running back John White finished with a game-high 84 rushing yards on 12 carries, with his longest run going for 18.

The Argos drew first blood on their second offensive drive after a costly Ticats penalty put Toronto in scoring position. The Argos were awarded a first down at Hamilton’s one-yard line after a successful challenge overturned an incompletion due to pass interference.

Hamilton’s Kameron Kelly made early contact while covering Foster, preventing him from getting to a pass near the right pylon. Arbuckle capped the drive off by carrying the ball across the goal line for the score, and Boris Bede kicked the extra point.

Toronto’s momentum grew on the ensuing drive as Muamba picked off Evans on a pass intended for Jaelon Acklin. Relentless defensive pressure forced Evans get rid of the ball early as he tossed his first interception of the season.

The Argos’ offence capitalized on the turnover and moved down the field for another touchdown in just three plays. Chandler Worthy got things started with a five-yard reception, and Arbuckle followed it up by connecting with DaVaris Daniels on a short crossing route for an 18-yard catch-and-run.

Foster then came through with a highlight-reel play on his first touch of the game. Foster received a quick shovel pass from Arbuckle directly after the snap, and the running back proceeded to accelerate through the Hamilton defence into the open field for a 40-yard score.

Foster broke an attempted tackle by Jovan Santos-Knox before dragging Kameron Kelly into the end zone for the touchdown. Bede added the extra point to put Toronto up 14-0.

But the Ticats managed to mount a response with a quick touchdown drive of their own. Papi White gained 14 yards on a catch-and-run after Frankie Williams returned the kickoff 24 yards, and Evans followed it up with a 26-yard completion to Tim White to move the ball into Argos territory.

Papi White finished the drive off two plays later by hauling in a 39-yard touchdown catch, and Domagala kicked the extra point to cut Toronto’s lead in half.

The Ticats’ defence prevented Toronto from adding to its lead before halftime, as Tunde Adeleke secured an interception in the end zone just before the three-minute warning.

Arbuckle sailed a long pass intended for Kurleigh Gittens Jr., but he was draped in coverage by Williams and the ball bounced off his hands and into the grasp of Adeleke.

Toronto got back on track to start the third quarter, with Arbuckle completing five straight passes to help move the offence into Hamilton territory. But the drive stalled when Hamilton forced an incompletion on second down, and the Argos settled for a 26-yard field goal from Bede to extend the lead to 10 points.

The Ticats cut back into the lead in the fourth quarter after a tough 19-yard run from Evans moved the ball into field goal range. Domagala made the 28-yard kick to move Hamilton within a touchdown.

Evans exited the game with an injury after being taken down for a big sack by Oakman. Watford stepped in to replace Evans under centre with just over six minutes left in the game.

But Hamilton’s defence stepped up to fill the gap, as Arbuckle was intercepted by Cariel Brooks as he tossed an errant pass off his back foot. Watford nearly connected with Tim White for a game-tying pass that ultimately fell incomplete, but he managed to extend the drive on third down with an 18-yard connection to Acklin to move the chains.

Thomas-Erlington capped off the drive with a 21-yard touchdown gallop, but the Ticats were left one point away from tying the game.

The Tiger-Cats will kick off Week 7 at home against the Calgary Stampeders next Friday at 7 p.m. ET, while the Argonauts will cap the night off by facing the Saskatchewan Roughriders on the road at 9:45 p.m. ET.

HOUSTON – The Houston Dash enter the international break tied for the sixth and final playoff spot after a 1-1 draw with the Chicago Red Stars at BBVA Stadium this evening.

Houston took the lead in the 22nd minute after midfielder Kristie Mewis found Rachel Daly with a ball over the top of the Chicago backline. Daly outmuscled USWNT defender Tierna Davidson to the ball and beat the Chicago goalkeeper at the near post for her 29th goal in league play.

With today’s goal Daly surpassed Kealia Ohai Watt in the club record book for the most NWSL regular season career goals. The Dash captain has scored six goals against the Red Stars, the most against any NWSL team in her career.

Chicago equalized in the 77th minute after Dash defender Allysha Chapman conceded a foul outside the box. The Canadian international was forced to contain Mallory Pugh on a breakaway after the Red Stars won the ball near midfield. Dash goalkeeper Jane Campbell saved the ensuing free kick, but the rebound fell to Casey Krueger for the equalizer.

Dash defender Haley Hanson found Mewis at the far post in the 31st minute, but her sliding effort went wide. Mewis forced a save seven minutes later with an effort from inside the penalty box.

Campbell made a comfortable save in the opening minutes of the game after a Red Stars corner kick fell to Katie Johnson inside the box. Campbell was well positioned to control the ball and the 26-year-old finished with four saves.

Campbell opened the second half with a point-blank save to deny Pugh. The Dash shot stopper denied Pugh again two minutes later, this time punching away a shot from the edge of the box.

The Dash backline was under heavy pressure in the opening 15 minutes of the match as Houston defended three corner kicks. The Dash backline defended 11 corner kicks this evening, the most conceded this season.

The Dash will host Tigres Femenil in Houston on Sept. 19 in the first international friendly for the club at BBVA Stadium. Houston will return to league play on Sept. 26 on the road against Racing Louisville FC.
