Twins place John Gant on 10-day injured list
Andrew Albers recalled from Triple-A St. Paul
MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL, MN – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have placed right-handed pitcher John Gant on the 10-day Injured List with a left abdominal strain.
Gant, who was acquired by the Twins via trade with St. Louis on July 30 in exchange for J.A. Happ, has appeared in 12 games (5 starts) for the Twins this season, going 1-3 with a 4.73 ERA (26.2 IP, 14 ER), 11 walks and 32 strikeouts. He is 5-9 with a 3.76 ERA (103.0 IP, 43 ER), 67 walks and 88 strikeouts in 37 games (19 starts) overall this season.
To replace Gant on the 28-man roster, the Twins have recalled left-handed pitcher Andrew Albers from Triple-A St. Paul. Albers has appeared in four games (3 starts) for the Twins this season, going 1-2 with a 7.16 ERA (16.1 IP, 13 ER), seven walks and 10 strikeouts.
Additionally, left-handed pitcher Charlie Barnes will serve as the 29th man for today’s doubleheader against the Cleveland Indians. Barnes has appeared in six games (5 starts) for the Twins earlier this season, going 0-3 with a 6.59 ERA (27.1 IP, 20 ER), 11 walks and 13 strikeouts. He is scheduled to start the second game of today’s doubleheader.
Cubs place OF Jason Heyward on seven-day concussion IL, select OF Trayce Thompson from Triple-A Iowa
PHILADELPHIA – The Chicago Cubs today placed outfielder Jason Heyward on the seven-day concussion injured list (retroactive to September 12) and selected outfielder Trayce Thompson from Triple-A Iowa. To make room for Thompson on the 40-man roster, outfielder Michael Hermosillo has been transferred to the 60-day injured list.
Thompson will wear uniform number 43 and is available for tonight’s 7:05 p.m. ET game against the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.
Thompson, 30, was acquired by Chicago from Arizona on May 11 for a cash consideration and in 98 games for Iowa has hit .233 (71-for-305) with 14 doubles, one triple, 21 home runs, 63 RBI, 45 walks and a .344 on-base percentage. The right-handed hitter has batted .294 (10-for-34) with two doubles, five home runs and 17 RBI in 10 September contests.
Thompson last appeared in the majors with the White Sox in 2018 and in 202 career major league contests with the White Sox (2015, 2018), Dodgers (2016-17) and Athletics (2018) he has batted .206 (110-for-535) with 24 doubles, four triples, 22 home runs and 59 RBI. His most extensive playing time came in 2016 with the Dodgers, a season in which Thompson hit .225 (53-for-236) with 11 doubles, 13 home runs and 32 RBI in 80 games.
Heyward, 32, is hitting .214 (69-for-323) with 15 doubles, two triples, eight home runs and 30 RBI in 104 games for Chicago this season.
Hermosillo, 26, landed on the 10-day injured list with a left forearm strain on September 8. He hit .194 (7-for-36) with two doubles, three home runs and seven RBI in 16 games for the Cubs this season.
White Sox announce six roster moves
CHICAGO — Prior to tonight’s series opener vs. the Los Angeles Angels, the Chicago White Sox announced the following six roster moves:
- Reinstated SS Tim Anderson from the 10-day injured list;
- Reinstated RHP Lucas Giolito from the 10-day injured list;
- Recalled C Zack Collins from Class AAA Charlotte;
- Placed OF Andrew Vaughn on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to September 10) with lower back inflammation;
- Optioned INF Danny Mendick to Charlotte;
- Optioned C Seby Zavala to Charlotte.
Anderson, 28, has been on the injured list since September 1 (retroactive to August 29) with a left hamstring strain. He is batting .302/.331/.458 (140-463) with 26 doubles, 14 home runs, 53 RBI, 82 runs scored and 17 stolen bases over 108 games this season. Anderson ranks fifth in the American League in average this season.
Giolito, 27, has been on the injured list since September 3 (retroactive to September 1) with a strained left hamstring suffered in his last start on August 31 vs. Pittsburgh. He is 9-9 with a 3.69 ERA (65 ER/158.1 IP), 180 strikeouts (10.23 per 9.0 IP), a .221 (129-585) opponents average, 1.11 WHIP and .279 on-base percentage in 27 starts this season. Giolito ranks among the AL leaders in strikeouts per 9.0 IP (5th), opponents on-base percentage (4th), WHIP (T4th), strikeouts (5th), opponents average (5th), opponents OPS (8th, .685) and ERA (9th).
Collins, 26, is hitting .202/.324/.331 (36-178) with 11 doubles, four home runs, 24 RBI and 23 runs scored over 72 games this season with the White Sox.
Vaughn, 23, has not played since last Thursday at Oakland. He is hitting .240/.314/.409 (95-396) with 22 doubles, 15 home runs, 45 RBI and 54 runs scored in 120 games in 2021. Vaughn ranks among the AL rookie leaders in doubles (T2nd), extra-base hits (6th, 37), total bases (6th, 162), home runs (7th) and RBI (7th).
Mendick, 27, is hitting .220 (36-164) with two home runs and 20 RBI in 71 games over six stints with Chicago in 2021.
Zavala, 28, is hitting .183 (17-93) with five home runs and 15 RBI in 37 games this season. He became the first player in major-league history to hit his first three career homers in the same game on July 31 vs. Cleveland.

Sharks re-sign Forward Noah Gregor
SAN JOSE, CA – San Jose Sharks (@SanJoseSharks) General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has re-signed forward Noah Gregor (@n_gregs20) to a one-year contract. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“Noah showed last season that he has the tools to be an effective player at the NHL level by utilizing his speed,” said Wilson. “We feel that he will elevate the competition among our forward group for a roster spot this season.”
Gregor, 23, appeared in 30 games for the Sharks in 2020-21, recording six points (5g, 1a) and set career highs in games played, goals, points and shots (60). He also spent time with the San Jose Barracuda, San Jose’s top developmental affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL), recording nine points (3g, 6a) in 10 games.
Over the course of his NHL career, he has appeared in 58 games scoring 11 points (five goals, three assists) and 14 penalty minutes. He has also skated in 35 career AHL games, registering 28 points (10 goals, 18 assists).
Prior to his professional career, Gregor skated in 257 career Western Hockey League (WHL) games with the Moose Jaw Warriors, Victoria Royals, and Prince Albert Raiders. He helped lead Prince Albert to a WHL Championship in 2018-19, scoring 24 points (13 goals, 11 assists) in 23 contests. He finished second in postseason goals, was tied for third in points, ranked fifth in assists and was named the WHL Player of the Game in the Final after posting three points (two goals, one assist) in Game 7. During the 2015-16 season, he was named to the CHL Top Prospects Game and led all WHL rookies in the regular season in assists (45). In addition, Gregor was teammates on Moose Jaw with fellow Sharks prospect Jayden Halbgewachs from 2014-17.
Internationally, Gregor skated with Team Canada at the 2016 U-18 World Junior Championship where he posted two assists in five games.
The six-foot, 185-pound native of Beaumont, Alberta, was originally selected by San Jose in the 2016 NHL Draft (fourth round, 111th overall).
LAFC signs English Goalkeeper Jamal Blackman
27-Year-Old Former Chelsea Product Joins LAFC As A Free Agent
The Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) announced today the signing of free agent goalkeeper Jamal Blackman. Blackman will occupy an international slot through 2021, with a Club option for 2022 and will be added to LAFC’s roster pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and P1 Visa.
“Jamal is a talented goalkeeper and an important addition to the Club” said Co-President and General Manager John Thorrington, “We look forward to welcoming him and are confident that he will prove to be a great fit with his skills and experience.”
Blackman, 27, made his way through the ranks of the Chelsea Academy as a youth player and originally signed a professional contract with Chelsea in 2012. He was a member of Chelsea’s 2012 UEFA Champions League Final roster and also was on the senior roster when Chelsea were crowned the champions of the English Premier League in 2015-16.
The six-foot-six goalkeeper is a former youth international for England, representing the national team at the U-17 and U-19 levels.
The native of Croydon, England joins LAFC after spending the 2020-21 season on loan with Rotherham United of the English Championship where he made 28 appearances in all competitions and recorded six clean sheets.
Since 2016, Chelsea has loaned Blackman to six different clubs in Sweden and England. Jamal was loaned to Swedish side Östersund in 2016 where he made 12 appearances across all competitions. During the 2016-17 season Blackman returned to English football and played in 42 matches with League Two side Wycombe Wanderers. In 2017, Jamal registered nine shutouts in 31 games for Sheffield United of the English Championship. Blackman spent 2018-19 with Leeds United of the English Championship and then made 10 appearances for the Bristol Rovers of English League One, registering three clean sheets.
