CFL Preview: Cornelius makes first start as Edmonton hosts Winnipeg

0

EDMONTON — The league-leading Winnipeg Blue Bombers travel to Edmonton to take on the Elks at Commonwealth Stadium on Saturday night.

With a record of 5-1 on the season, the Bombers have arguably been the best team in the CFL. After handing the Saskatchewan Roughriders, their biggest threat in the West, a pair of losses, there seems to be no stopping them.

However, the Edmonton Elks, who will be without Trevor Harris after he was moved to the six-game injured list, will be looking to change that trend this week. In his place will be former XFL Tampa Bay Vipers’ starting quarterback Taylor Cornelius.

Cornelius, 26, spent for seasons with the Oklahoma State Cowboys. During his time there, the Amarillo, TX., native completed 59.4 per cent of his passes for 3,978 yards and 32 touchdowns in his senior season while an additional 10 touchdowns on the ground saw him tie OSU legend, Barry Sanders, for the second-most in program history.

Following his collegiate career, Cornelius spent time with the Green Bay Packers before finding a home with the XFL’s Tampa Bay Vipers. There he played for then offensive coordinator Jaime Elizondo, who spoke highly of Cornelius ahead of his first CFL start.

“Obviously he has a cannon of an arm,” said Elizondo. “He can stick a throw into tight windows, he’s accurate. I think his composure and his toughness is very even-keeled. The kid’s played in some big-time environments, went down to Texas where he was the starting quarterback at Oklahoma State and won that game.”

While he won’t be on the field Saturday, Harris’ presence in the Elks quarterback room is still there and has played a role in Cornelius’ preparation ahead of the game, giving him advice with his first start looming.

“Trevor’s been awesome,” said Cornelius. “He’s helped me prepare this week more so than I ever could have asked for.”

One area the Elks look to sure up this week, especially when breaking in a new quarterback, is their ability to prevent sacks. Having given up seven against the Calgary Stampeders just a week ago, Greg Ellingson feels that there are certain things that they can do to ensure that the pocket isn’t collapsing as fast, giving time for throws to be made.

“As receivers, it’s our part to be fundamentally sound, we have to make sure we’re in our right assignments, we have to be in our right splits, have the right depth on our routes because it’s precision football,” said Ellingson. “If we have a certain route that we need to change because they’re bringing pressure then we have to do that to make sure we’re on time with the quarterback.”

In Winnipeg, the news of Harris’ injury and Cornelius’ start hasn’t altered the course of preparation established earlier in the week for Mike O’Shea’s squad.

“Our guys are prepared to play our system and execute our plays against an Elks’ system that shows up through their first bunch of games,” said O’Shea. “We imagine like in any system, the next guy up is quite prepared to run it, they expect him, whoever gets in there to them help win a football game by executing their system.”

Similar to O’Shea, Alden Darby believes that who starts at quarterback is irrelevant in the thinking process leading up to Saturday.

“They’re still a well-coached team, still have great athletes on all sides of the ball,” said Darby. “We still want to go out there and play ball no matter who lines up. Whoever lines up, we’re going to play ball as if it was Trevor Harris.”

Having yet to play the Elks this season, the Bombers are eagerly looking forward to what could be a defensive showdown especially with the addition of former Roughrider and CFL All-Star, Derrick Moncrief who joined the Elks a week ago.

“He’s been an All-Star at that spot so we’ll know where he is,” said O’Shea. “Like all good players on your opposition, your team is aware of what they bring to the game and some of the nuances they bring.”

With Edmonton’s defence being able to generate big plays much like Winnipeg’s, Zach Collaros knows what it’ll take to play against a unit that just got better.

“Crief’s [Moncrief] a great player so we’ll have to be ready however they decide to utilize him,” said Collaros. “Upfront is where it really starts there in Edmonton, they got a really great front four. They get after the passer, they’re very very physical so we’ll have our hands full…they’re a very very good opponent.”

Kickoff is set for 9:45 p.m. ET on Saturday night and can be watched on TSN and ESPN+ or followed along on CFL.ca’s Game Tracker.

CFL Preview: Alouettes, Lions battle to kick off Saturday Night Football

0

MONTREAL — On the heels of a dominant performance on their home turf, the BC Lions head to Montreal to take on Alouettes this Saturday.

In their Week 6 win over the Ottawa REDBLACKS, the Lions showed just what this 2021 team is capable of. Firing on all cylinders and ruling all phases of the game from Lucky Whitehead’s 119-yard kick return touchdown to Michael Reilly’s 319 yards, four touchdown performance, all eyes will be on Lions for an encore performance.

Throughout the season, the BC offence has gotten progressively better with each passing week. Having started the season with a 33-29 loss against the Saskatchewan Roughriders in a game that saw Nathan Rourke and Reilly have reps under centre, quarterback play and offence efficiency have solidified and improved drastically.

Last week was arguably their most complete and decisive win of the season as on offence, everything seemed to work for the Lions. In the passing game, they found tremendous success as three different receivers: Bryan Burnham, Jevon Cottoy, and Keon Hatcher all found the end zone. On the ground, the Lions managed to rack up 71 rushing yards and dominate on defence, recording three sacks and an interception.

One of the areas that BC shines is on special teams, which they will try to continue this week against an Alouettes team that allowed Frankie Williams to rack up 184 return yards in the Ticats’ win a few weeks ago.

In Montreal, the Alouettes are also coming into this game riding high on a dominant Labour Day win against the REDBLACKS with their sights set on repeating. Though, the game will not be without adversity as they will have to play without their head coach Khari Jones who tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this week.

In Jones’ place, running back coach and assistant head coach, Andre Bolduc will assume the head coaching duties.

While the absence of Jones on the Als’ sideline will certainly be felt as his game-day energy will be missed, Kristian Matte says the team is handling it as if it were one of their own position players going down.

“For us, it’s almost as a player. When a player goes down, the next man up has to be ready to fill his shoes,” said Matte. “I think our coaching staff is very good at adapting to situations.”

The 36-year old, 10-year CFL veteran Matte and the offensive line have quietly been one of the most impactful areas of this year’s Alouette team. With only four sacks surrendered on the campaign, the Als’ pass and run blocking has allowed for their offence to flourish.

As a result, Vernon Adams Jr. has picked up where he left off in 2019 as he sits tied with Winnipeg’s Zach Collaros for the league-lead in passing touchdowns (nine) and has played a large role in Montreal’s league-leading 564 rushing yards.

While Adams and the Montreal offence will certainly test the Lions’ secondary, most of this week has seen the Als place an emphasis on special teams.

“It’s a big part of the game, special teams are important,” said Bolduc. “What they decided to do with two returners- Rainey [Chris Rainey] was here, I coached him, I know he still has gas in the tank; that’s a good duo out there, we’ve got to be watching.”

Though his week-to-week goal is to develop and fine-tune the run game, Bolduc noted that he doesn’t plan to lean on that any more than he has to.

“A lot of teams are doing a great job right now to stop the run against us,” said Bolduc. “We have to be more creative, especially more patient with the run game…they [BC] certainly do a good job of stopping the run and forcing teams to opposing teams to throw a little more.”

Having spent three seasons under Bolduc, William Stanback knows that his coach will put himself and the team in the best position to succeed Saturday.

“He’s assistant head coach for a reason,” said Stanback. “He’s going to continue to execute the game plan that we’re going to have this week, we may run the ball a little bit more, but we’re not going to shy away from anything that’s given us success in the past.”

Ahead of the game, Adams Jr. echoed the same feelings felt by Stanback and feels the team ready to bring it on Saturday night.

“Coaches are doing a good job around here making sure we’re taking care of the little things,” said Adams Jr. “BC’s a good team but we’re the only people who is going to stop us. As long as we do our thing and have fun with it, it should be good.”

Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. ET and can be watched on TSN, RDS, ESPN+ or followed along on CFL.ca’s Game Tracker.

CFL Preview: Argos, Riders clash on Friday Night Football

0

REGINA — The Saskatchewan Roughriders will be hosting the Toronto Argonauts at Mosaic Stadium in the second game of doubleheader action on Friday night.

Approaching Week 7, the Roughriders have not won a game since Week 3 when they defeated the Ottawa REDBLACKS 23-10. They’re coming off consecutive losses in both the Labour Day Classic and the Banjo Bowl games against the division rival Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

In the Week 6 matchup, Saskatchewan lost 33-9, though they almost lost more than just the game as Riders’ quarterback Cody Fajardo was forced to exit the contest with an injury and did not return.

The Saskatchewan signal caller’s status remained in question entering Friday’s game, however the team expects Fajardo to be ready to start against Toronto in Week 7.

“We think he’s going to be alright,” said head coach Craig Dickenson. “We feel like he should be able to go for the game.”

Fajardo has been the driving force behind Saskatchewan’s offensive success through the first six weeks of the season. Dropping back 151 times, Fajardo has completed 109 passes for 1,153 yards and four passing touchdowns, while also adding 197 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.

As a team, the Riders have scored on seven of their 14 trips to the red zone through the start of the 2021 season and were one of the league’s most effective scoring teams just a season ago.

In the 2019 season, Fajardo was one of the league’s most dangerous playmakers when in scoring position. In the red zone, the Saskatchewan quarterback completed 28 passes for eight touchdowns, while only throwing one interception. Fajardo proved to be equally as dangerous with his legs from striking distance. Carrying the ball 23 times, scoring 10 rushing touchdowns from inside the red zone.

“He’s our starting quarterback, we feel like he gives us or best chance to win,” said Dickenson of Fajardo. “We certainty want him on the field.”

Saskatchewan’s young group of receivers have stepped up in a big way for the Riders offence through the start of the season. After a breakout year in 2019, third year pass-catcher Kyran Moore is among the league’s best, reeling in 34 of his 48 targets for 301 yards and two touchdowns.

In addition to Moore, Canadian rookie Kian Schaffer-Baker has shown he can play at the CFL level through his first three games. The former Guelph Gryphon has totalled 157 yards, catching 12 of the 14 passes thrown his way, drawing praise from his coaches and teammates.

“The kid has stepped up big time and he’s made some big plays,” said receiver Brayden Lenius of his teammate. “He has got a tremendous upside; he just has to keep working hard.”

On the opposite sideline, the Double Blue boast an aggressive offensive unit, highlighted by their ability to utilize feature backs, D.J. Foster and John White to generate yardage.

As a team the Argos have totalled 478 rushing yards and average 5.1 yards per carry on just 92 rushing attempts, the fourth fewest attempts in the league. That makes them one of the most efficient teams at generating yards on the ground.

White has carried the ball 54 times for Toronto, accumulating 279 yards and a touchdown. White’s strength and field vision make him one of the toughest runners in the CFL.

Toronto is able complement the power of White with the agility of Foster, who has shown the athleticism to line up in multiple offensive sets. On the ground, Foster has totalled 116 yards on 16 carries. The rookie back is equally as effective in the passing game, hauling in nine receptions for 115 yards and a touchdown.

The Riders will be facing a tough task with attempting to limit the damage of Toronto’s innovative scheming. However, the Green and White enter their Week 7 matchup as one of the most physical defences in the league and hope their ability to create pressure will rattle the Boatmen.

Saskatchewan’s front seven is among the best in the league at creating pressure situations for opposing quarterbacks. Their 16 sacks this season are the most of any defence league-wide and they have forced opposing teams into 30 two-and-out situations.

The Riders have also been aggressive at going after the ball and creating turnover opportunities. The defensive backfield has forced six interceptions through the start of the regular season and the defence as a whole has forced 12 turnovers.

Against the Argonauts, the Green and White will need to focus on limiting red zone scores. The Riders have had to defend their own goal line nine times on the season and they have yet to stop a team from scoring.

Friday Night Football in the CFL will close with a matchup that features the classic gridiron storyline of offence versus defence. Toronto’s ability to be creative on offence will look to stress a stout Saskatchewan defence in a variety of ways as both teams look for a win in Week 7.

Kickoff is slated for 9:45 p.m. ET on TSN and ESPNews or can be followed along on CFL.ca’s Game Tracker.

CFL Preview: Ti-Cats, Stamps Kick off week 7 action in Hamilton

0

HAMILTON — The Hamilton Tiger-Cats are set to host the Calgary Stampeders at Tim Hortons Field to kick off Friday Night Football action in the CFL.

Hamilton will be looking to bounce back after a heartbreaking 17-16 loss to the division rival Toronto Argonauts in Week 6. Their loss to the Argos came at a high price, as starting quarterback Dane Evans will be sidelined for the next 4-6 weeks after sustaining a lower body injury late in the game.

Following the injury to Evans, the Tabbies turned to third year CFL quarterback David Watford, who managed 78 yards passing yards on six completions in the contest. Watford has been listed as this week’s starter on the team’s official depth chart that was issued on Thursday.

Watford played his college football for the Hampton Pirates in the NCAA, completing 167 of his 315 passing attempts for 21 touchdowns and 2,088 yards in 2015.

The former Pirate entered the league in 2018 and has dropped back 50 times, completing 26 passes for 320 yards and a touchdown. The Ticats pivot has also carried the ball 34 times totalling 133 yards and six touchdowns.

The Ticats locker room isn’t worried about who is under centre and are more than familiar with the importance of staying prepared and being ready when your number is called.

“It’s definitely the next man up mentality for this team,” said Hamilton receiver Nikola Kalinic. “When we have guys going down, it’s very unfortunate and we hate to see it happen, but we can’t dwell on that.”

The opposing Stampeders offence will once again feature Bo Levi Mitchell starting at quarterback.

The two-time Grey Cup champion made his return to the Calgary line up in Week 6 with a thrilling performance and more importantly for Calgary, a 32-16 win over their rival Edmonton Elks. In last week’s Battle of Alberta, Mitchell completed 23 of his 42 passing attempts throwing for 276 yards and a touchdown.

“Bo Levi is Bo Levi, you know what type of guy he is when he’s on the field,” said Hamilton’s Ja’Gared Davis. “Calgary is never out of the game as long as they have Bo Levi at quarterback.”

The Calgary offence has been one of the most electric passing attacks in Canadian football as we approach the halfway mark of the season. As a team, the Stampeders have a league-leading 1,763 yard through the air.

Kamar Jorden has been the most threatening pass-catcher on a weekly basis for the Red and White and will certainly be a big part of the offensive game plan as they prepare for Hamilton. On the season, Jorden has caught 37 of his 49 targets and leads all receivers in yards with 516. That being said, Jorden is looking for something beyond the stat sheet.

“I haven’t finished a season since I’ve been up here,” said Jorden of his performance. “All of the stats and the mid-season stats are good, but I want to be able to say that at the end of the year I’m still standing and standing with my team.”

In addition to an impressive passing attack, the Stampeders have found success when running the ball. Ka’Deem Carey has rushed 68 times for the Red and White, running for 339 yards and scoring four touchdowns. Carey’s four rushing majors lead all CFL running backs.

Calgary has proved to be especially efficient running the ball when in scoring situations. Their five rushing touchdowns place them among the league’s leaders in ground-game scores.

The Black and Gold will be relying on the shutdown nature of their defence to contain an explosive Calgary offence.

The recent play of the Hamilton defence has been physical and fast paced, giving their team opportunities to win games. Through the first six weeks of CFL play, the Tabbies have forced nine turnovers, five interceptions and have held teams to an average of just 19 points per game.

Calgary has made it apparent that they are going to utilize their rushing attack when in scoring situations. The Ticats defence has been stellar against teams in the red zone this season. They have allowed just two rushing scores, the fewest among any team in the league.

The Stamps aggressive offensive play and ability to make plays downfield with their receivers is something the Ticats defence will be aware of. Hamilton’s head coach Orlondo Steinauer maintains that execution of the game plan will be crucial in securing a win.

“At the end of the day there’s always a test at the end of every week and the test will be on game day,” said Steinauer. “The game will always come down to execution.”

Nearing the halfway mark of the season, both teams enter Friday night needing a win. Mitchell and the Stampeders are looking for their second-straight road win and the Ticats look to their backup quarterback in Watford to defend home field in the Hammer.

Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. ET on Friday night and can be watched on TSN, RDS and ESPN+ or followed along on CFL.ca’s Game Tracker.

This afternoon, the Orioles made the following roster move:

Recalled RHP Dusten Knight from Triple-A Norfolk.

Twins make roster moves

0

TORONTO, ON – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have reinstated outfielder Brent Rooker from the Paternity List and have selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Nick Vincent from Triple-A St. Paul.
