Sounders FC Midfielder Nicolás Lodeiro Undergoes Successful Surgery

0

Sounders FC’s captain re-aggravated his previous knee injury in training last week; Lodeiro’s procedure was performed by Dr. Jorge Chahla on Monday in Chicago

SEATTLE, WASH. – Sounders FC today announced that midfielder Nicolás Lodeiro has undergone successful surgery. The procedure – a right knee arthroscopy – was performed by Dr. Jorge Chahla on Monday, September 20 in Chicago, Illinois. Lodeiro is set to begin rehabilitation immediately following the procedure. Lodeiro re-aggravated an injury from earlier this season during training last week and sat out Saturday’s match at Real Salt Lake. He underwent surgery on the same knee back on May 27.

Lodeiro, 32, signed with Sounders FC in the summer of 2016 and has since led the club to two MLS Cup titles and four MLS Cup Final appearances, in addition to ranking first in franchise history with 59 MLS regular-season assists and sixth in scoring (33 goals). He also ranks first with 10 assists and second with eight goals in postseason play. The Uruguayan has eight appearances across all competitions in 2021, recording one goal and one assist.

Oakland A’s to Decide on Las Vegas After World Series, Team Visits Sin City for Sixth Time

0

The Oakland A’s MLB franchise says it will decide on whether to pursue Las Vegas after the World Series concludes in late October or early November.

The A’s are considering following their former neighbor — the Raiders — to Southern Nevada. The A’s face the same predicament the NFL team did several years ago when they decided to flee California’s Bay Area in favor of the nation’s casino capital.

Oakland and Alameda County officials continue to struggle in determining a financing arrangement to build a new professional sports stadium complex. As a result, the A’s are reviewing potential new homes.

A’s President Dave Kaval said recently that the team’s decision on where to call home will be made in the postseason. Kaval said the list of candidate cities will be narrowed down following the Fall Classic.

The World Series begins on October 26. For interested bettors, the Los Angeles Dodgers are the odds-on favorite to win the Commissioner’s Trophy at +280. The Houston Astros are next at +475, and Milwaukee Brewers third at +700.

The A’s still have a slim chance of making the postseason. But as for their title odds, DraftKings has Oakland at +12000 of winning, which is an implied chance of 0.83 percent. A $5 bet and that nearly unthinkable occurring would net $600.

MLB House Hunters

Kaval and other reps from the A’s organization last week once again toured potential sites for the future home of the club in Southern Nevada. The team was accompanied around town by Clark County commissioners, union leaders, and Henderson Mayor Debra March.

The A’s have now made six trips to Las Vegas, visiting some 20 sites throughout the valley. Kaval said earlier this year that a new ballpark in Nevada would likely cost around $1 billion. Allegiant Stadium, the 65,000-seat domed home of the Las Vegas Raiders, cost almost double.

Speaking with the San Francisco Chronicle, Kaval explained that an MLB ballpark differs greatly than an NFL stadium in that it would host at least 81 games a year, compared with only nine NFL home games. Accessibility for the baseball site is key.

The different locations bring different pros and cons when it comes to market segmentation and getting in and out easily, especially for 81 games,” Kaval said. “We started with 20-some sites and it’s slowly been working its way down.”

The A’s have not commented on if they have a preferred site in Las Vegas. The team has said it prefers to be close to entertainment. “Our business is entertainment,” Kaval rationalized.

Touchdown for Las Vegas Business

COVID-19 prevented the Raiders from showing Sin City the benefits of having an NFL team in town. That changed on September 13 when the packed Allegiant Stadium showcased the Raiders’ new pad to the world on Monday Night Football.

The Raiders’ 33-27 win over the visiting Baltimore Ravens drew 15.2 million television viewers, the highest-rated Monday Night Football broadcast since 2013. Local Las Vegas businesses reported a strong boost in their operations due to the game.

Hennessey’s Tavern downtown on Fremont Street for example told KTNV that its sales on a typical Monday range between $4,000 to $5,000. But last week, the watering hole reported sales of $9,000, as the bar was crowded with Raiders fans.

Cubs activate INF Nico Hoerner and RHP Keegan Thompson from 10-day IL

0

RHP Dillon Maples designated for assignment and OF Nick Martini optioned to Triple-A Iowa

MILWAUKEE – The Chicago Cubs today activated infielder Nico Hoerner and right-handed pitcher Keegan Thompson from the 10-day injured list, designated right-handed pitcher Dillion Maples for assignment and optioned outfielder Nick Martini to Triple-A Iowa.

Hoerner, 24, landed on the 10-day injured list, July 29, with a right oblique strain. He hit safely in three of four injury rehabilitation games he played with Iowa, Sept. 12-17, batting 3-for-12 (.250) with one double and one RBI.

This season with Chicago, Hoerner has batted .313 (42-for-134) with 10 doubles, 14 RBI and a .776 OPS in 39 games, making 30 starts at second base, seven starts at shortstop and one start in left field. Hoerner last season made his first Opening Day roster and hit .222 (24-for-108) with four doubles and 13 RBI in 48 contests with the Cubs.

Originally selected by Chicago in the first round (24th overall) of the 2018 draft out of Stanford University, Hoerner was the first member of the 2018 MLB Draft class to make his Major League debut when he was promoted from Double-A Tennessee, Sept. 9, 2019. In 20 games for Chicago in 2019, Hoerner hit .282 (22-for-78) with one double, one triple, three homers and 17 RBI.

Thompson, 26, was placed on the 10-day injured list, Sept. 4, with right shoulder inflammation. In two stints with Chicago this season Thompson is 3-3 with one save and a 3.54 ERA (19 ER/48.1 IP) in 30 games (four starts) in his debut Major League season. He has walked 28 and struck out 48 to go along with a 1.49 WHIP. Thompson started his big league career with 15.0 scoreless innings, the third-longest scoreless streak for a Cub to start his career behind Larry Cheney (28.0 IP) and Vern Olsen (15.1 IP).

Originally selected by the Cubs in the third round of the 2017 Draft out of Auburn University, Thompson is 10-10 with a 3.17 ERA (61 ER/173.1 IP) in 39 Minor League games (33 starts), with 44 walks, 167 strikeouts and a 1.06 WHIP.

Maples, 29, is 1-0 with a 2.59 ERA (9 ER/31.1 IP) in 28 relief appearances for Chicago this season, walking 25 and striking out 40. Originally selected by the Cubs in the 14th round of the 2011 Draft, Maples is 3-0 with a 5.10 ERA (31 ER/54.2 IP), 50 walks and 79 strikeouts in 59 relief appearances spanning all or part of five seasons with the Cubs, starting in 2017.

Martini, 31, is hitting .158 (3-for-19) with one double and two RBI in 17 games for the Cubs this season. The left-handed hitter has batted .267 (72-for-270) with nine doubles, three triples, a career-high 11 home runs and 40 RBI in 78 games with Iowa this year.

Jesse Hart Decisions Mike Guy in Philadelphia

0

PHILADELPHIA – Former two-time world title challenger Jesse Hart made a triumphant return to Philadelphia by pounding out an eight-round unanimous decision over Mike Guy at a crowded 2300 Arena.

The show was promoted by RDR Promotions.

Hart, who was fighting for the first time in 20-months, controlled the action and landed the harder punches throughout the contest. Guy was sturdy, but landed very few punches. Guy showed a good chin as he ate some nice uppercuts from the taller Hart.

Hart, 169.5 lbs of Philadelphia won by scores of 80-72 and 79-73 twice and is now 27-3. Guy, 171 lbs of Sacramento, CA is 12-7-1.

Samuel Teah took out Larry Fryers in the opening round of their scheduled 10-round super lightweight bout.

In the opening frame, Teah landed a double-jab that was followed by a booming right hand that sent Fryers hard to the canvas. Fryers was wobbly and ate a huge flurry of punches and the fight was stopped at 2:42.

With the win, Teah of Philadelphia is 18-4-1 with eight knockouts. Fryers of Yonkers, NY via Clones, IRE is 11-5.

Jabril Noble stopped David Boria in the final round of their four-round lightweight fight.

It was a tough fight that saw Noble get the better of the action. In round four, Noble hurt Boria with a left hook. Noble followed up with a barrage of punches, and the fight was stopped at 1:24.

Noble, 134.5 lbs of Philadelphia is 2-0 with two knockouts. Boria, 140 lbs of Puerto Rico is 0-3.

Brendan O’Callaghan remained undefeated with a four-round unanimous decision over debuting Davon Hall in a middleweight fight.

O’Callaghan dropped Hall with a straight in the final round, but he could not put Hall away.

O’Callaghan, 157.8 lbs of Philadelphia, PA won by scores of 40-35 scores on all cards and is now 2-0. Hall, 161 lbs of Wilmington, DE is 0-1.

Isaiah Johnson remained undefeated with a 3rd round stoppage over Leoniadas Fowlkes in a scheduled four-round junior welterweight fight.

In round three, Johnson landed a blistering combination that snapped back the head of Fowlkes. Johnson hurt Fowlkes and the fight was stopped at 2:!5.

Johnson, 140.7 lbs of Sicklerville, NJ is 2-0 with two knockouts. Fowlkes, 145.5 lbs of Winchester, VA is 2-4.

Romuel Cruz remained undefeated by winning a six-round unanimous decision over Roberto Pucheta in a super bantamweight fight.

Cruz, 122.3 lbs of Philadelphia won by scores of 58-56 on all cards and is now 6-0-1. Pucheta, 122.5 lbs of Jalisco, MEX is 10-20-2.

Jerrod Miner broke a 14-fight winless streak by winning a four-round Majority decision over Joshua Arrons in a bantamweight fight.

Miner, 116.6 lbs of Philadelphia won by scores of 40-36, 39-37 and 38-38 to raise his mark to 2-12-1. Arrons, 116.3 lbs of Williamsport, PA is 0-1.

RDR Promotions will be back at the 2300 Arena on Saturday, October 9th.
