THREE POINTS: Houston Dash return to league play on Sunday in Kentucky

NEED TO KNOW:

Houston open three-game road trip on Sunday against Racing Louisville FC

Five players return from international duty and will be available on Sunday

Dash return to BBVA Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 10 to host North Carolina Courage

HOUSTON – The Houston Dash return to league play on Sunday and open a three-game road trip in Kentucky against Racing Louisville FC at 2 p.m. CT. The match will stream live on Paramount + in the U.S. and international fans can follow the game on the NWSL Twitch channel.

The Dash return to league play after defeating Tigres Femenil 5-1 on Sunday in the first women’s international friendly at BBVA Stadium. Houston defeated the reigning LigaMX Femenil champions without six players due to international duty. Houston did not miss a beat as they scored three goals against Tigres in the first half. Houston will look to build on this momentum as they navigate the final six games of the regular season and chase their first playoff berth in franchise history.

The Dash are currently tied with the Washington Spirit for the sixth and final spot in the postseason with 23 points. Houston will look to earn key road points on Sunday and next Saturday in their final matches against teams below them in the league table. Houston will close the season with two matches against the first place Portland Thorns, one match at BBVA Stadium against the North Carolina Courage and close the season on the road against the Spirit.

Racing Louisville looks to snap a six-game winless streak that began with a 1-1 draw with Gotham FC on Aug. 15. Houston extended the streak with a 1-0 victory over Louisville at BBVA Stadium on Aug. 29. Houston’s victory was the second meeting of the regular season between both teams after Louisville defeated Houston 1-0 on June 20. A victory on Sunday would give Houston the standing’s head-to-head tiebreaker over Louisville.

Houston will travel to Kansas City next weekend to face Kansas City NWSL at 7 p.m. CT. This is the third and final meeting between both teams this season. Houston and Kansas City played to a 2-2 draw on May 23 and Katie Naughton led Houston to a 1-0 victory on June 6.

Here are the three key points ahead of Sunday’s game:

DASH ENTER WITH MOMENTUM: Four players found the back of the net on Sunday in Houston’s 5-1 victory over Tigres Femenil. Houston looks to build on Sunday’s victory as the begin a three-game road trip and navigate the final six regular games of the season. Houston is currently tied with the Washington Spirit for the sixth and final playoff spot and the Dash will face four teams currently in the playoff picture to close the season. Houston will look for key points away from home to qualify for the postseason for the first time in franchise history, the Dash close the season with four of their final six games on the road.

FIVE DASH PLAYERS RETURN FROM NATIONAL TEAM DUTY: Five players return from international duty on Sunday. Jane Campbell, Abby Dahlkemper and Kristie Mewis return to Houston after joining the U.S. Women’s National Team for back-to-back victories over Paraguay. Michelle Alozie reached the final of the inaugural Aisha Buhari Cup with Nigeria, who fell to South Africa earlier this week. Andrea Hauksdottir joined Iceland in their opening game of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifier and fell to the Netherlands 2-0 on Tuesday. Dash captain Rachel Daly will return to Houston after Sunday’s game and will join the team for their match in Kansas City on Oct. 2.

LOUISVILLE NAVIGATES WINLESS STRETCH: Racing Louisville is navigating a six-game winless stretch after falling 3-1 to the Orlando Pride on Sept. 11. Louisville’s last victory came at home on Aug. 8 in a 3-1 triumph over Kansas City NWSL. The expansion side is without Danish international Nadia Nadim, who injured her knee earlier this month against the Pride. The offensive responsibilities have fallen to NWSL veteran Savannah McCaskill, England international Ebony Salmon and former Dash forward CeCe Kizer. Salmon currently leads the team with five goals and one assist, Kizer adds three goals and two assists in her first season with Louisville.

Game Recap: Bethel-Thompson steps up to help lead Argos past Als

0

TORONTO — McLeod Bethel-Thompson threw two touchdown passes to help lead the Toronto Argonauts to a 30-27 win over the Montreal Argonauts in Week 8 action on Friday night at BMO Field.

The Argos (4-3) have now won five straight home games dating back to 2019, including a perfect 3-0 start at home this season.

Bethel-Thompson got the start at quarterback for Toronto with Nick Arbuckle nursing a hamstring injury, and he helped give the Argos a 21-10 lead entering halftime with a pair of touchdown tosses — including a 45-yard deep bomb to Chandler Worthy with 16 seconds left in the half.

Former Montreal kicker Boris Bede added three field goals for the Argos in the fourth quarter, including a 37-yarder that restored Toronto’s double-digit lead with two minutes left.

Jake Wieneke scored a last-minute touchdown for the Als, but Montreal was unable to complete the comeback on the final drive.

Montreal running back William Stanback moved past Edmonton’s James Wilder Jr. to grab the league rushing lead — finishing the game with a game-high 133 yards on 19 carries.

Bethel-Thompson completed 13-of-19 passes for 210 yards, while rookie Argos receiver Damion Jeanpiere finished with a team-high 91 yards on four catches.

New defensive consultant Chris Jones helped guide an Argos unit that finished with two interceptions, a pair of sacks and a fumble recovery.

Both defences started strong to hold the game scoreless early on, but Bethel-Thompson began to establish a rhythm near the end of the first quarter. He converted a long second down with a 30-yard completion to Jeanpiere, and he followed it up three plays later with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Kurleigh Gittens Jr.

Gittens beat Monshadrik Hunter with a sharp route in the end zone for his first career CFL touchdown, and Bede added the extra point.

Vernon Adams Jr. and the Als responded with an 11-play 79-yard touchdown drive that he capped off with a seven-yard touchdown pass to Eugene Lewis.

Adams completed six straight passes on the drive before connecting with Lewis on a play-action pass as the receiver crossed the field. Côté kicked the extra point to tie the game at seven points apiece.

Montreal recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff after Alexandre Gagné stripped the ball away from Toronto returner Worthy. The Argos’ defence stood strong to keep the Als from adding another major, with defensive lineman Shawn Oakman sacking Adams on second down to stall the drive deep in Toronto territory.

Montreal settled for a 17-yard field goal by Côté to take the lead with seven minutes left in the half.

But Bethel-Thompson quickly led the Argos down the field after completing a 25-yard pass to Worthy and a 22-yard pass to Ricky Collins Jr. Running back D.J. Foster finished off the impressive drive with a tough three-yard touchdown run up the middle, and Bede kicked the extra point to put Toronto up 14-10.

The Argos secured a turnover with just 25 seconds left in the half when Chris Edwards intercepted Adams on a pass intended for Wieneke, and Toronto’s offence proceeded to capitalize in a big way.

Bethel-Thompson got things started with a 10-yard completion to Gittens before following it up with a 45-yard strike to Worthy for the score.

Worthy burned Tyquwan Glass deep down the right sideline with a go-route, and Bethel-Thompson finished the job by launching a deep ball over Worthy’s shoulder for the touchdown. Bede’s successful extra point gave Toronto a 21-10 lead entering the half.

Toronto’s defence forced another turnover in the third quarter when Shaquille Richardson punched the ball out of B.J. Cunningham’s hands, with Crezdon Butler recovering the fumble for Toronto. Veteran defensive lineman Almondo Sewell sacked Bethel-Thompson to force a punt, and the Als seized the opportunity to get back into the game.

Montreal engineered a 12-play 61-yard touchdown drive that was kept alive with a successful third down QB sneak by Adams.

Key catches by Quan Bray, Kaion Julien-Grant and Wieneke helped set up a three-yard touchdown run by Stanback to cap the drive off. Stanback powered across the goal line through a pile of bodies for the score, and Côté’s extra point cut Toronto’s lead down to just four points with two minutes remaining in the third.

The Argos extended their lead to start the fourth with a 29-yard field goal by Bede, and he added a 32-yarder later in the quarter to put Toronto up 27-17.

But Montreal managed to make it a one-possession game with under seven minutes to play. A 17-yard run by Stanback and a pair of first down pickups by Bray led to a 38-yard field goal by Côté that made it a 27-20 game.

Momentum shifted back in Toronto’s favour after an errant throw from Adams was picked off by Richardson after he beat Lewis to the ball, and Bede remained perfect on the night with a 37-yard field goal that gave Toronto a 10-point lead.

Wieneke took matters into his own hands and came through with a huge 49-yard catch-and-run before following it up with a 27-yard touchdown catch. Côté added the extra point to make it a three-point game with just 55 seconds left in the game.

But the ensuing onside kick attempt was recovered by Toronto’s DaVaris Daniels, and the Als ran out of time on their final drive.

Montreal’s next test comes on the road against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Oct. 2, while Toronto will have a week off before hosting the Ottawa REDBLACKS to kick off Week 10 on Oct. 6.

Game Recap: Fajardo’s last-minute heroics lift Riders over Lions

0

VANCOUVER —  Cody Fajardo‘s 279 passing yards and last-minute, come-from-behind quarterback sneak propelled the Saskatchewan Roughriders over the BC Lions 31-24.

The Michael Reilly–Lucky Whitehead connection continued to result in points for the Lions’ offence as the two connected for a pair of touchdowns as part of Reilly’s 259-yard passing night.

On defence, both teams brought their best, making life hard for each offence’s running backs to establish their run game. The Lions’ secondary would continue to improve on their impressive takeaway resume as they recorded an interception for the seventh-straight game.

Brett Lauther was a crucial part of the Riders’ offence, as his four field goals on the night kept the Green and White on the Lions’ tails all night and sealed the game with his final point-after-attempt.

It was a sight to see Friday night in Vancouver as a sea of Lions fans draped in orange as part of the team’s “Orange Shirt Day Game” gathered to see their team take on the Riders in a battle for second in the West Division.

Following an opening drive that ended in a Lions’ punt, the Fajardo-led Riders went to work. Handing off the ball to William Powell, the Riders’ offensive line generated enough room for him and Fajardo to march their way down the field.

After a sneaky, underhand completion on third-down from Fajardo to Brayden Lenius, the Riders would get all the way down to the BC 30-yard line before Lauther would be called upon. He hit from 38 yards out to put the Riders in front.

In a similar fashion to last week, it took the Lions no time at all to answer.

After dropping a sure-first down during the Lions’ first drive, Reilly and Whitehead would give the fans something to cheer about. It started with the feet of Bryan Burnham, whose 28-yard reception gave the Lions’ offence some momentum. Reilly and Whitehead would attack the sidelines a single play later on a bubble screen and as Whitehead blazed past the entire Riders’ secondary en route to a 47-yard touchdown, giving the Lions their first lead of the game

The Riders would find themselves successful on their second-consecutive drive as a booming Lauther kick from near mid-field was good, bringing the Riders within a point of the Lions’ lead

Following a stalled-out Lions drive that would see them forced to punt, the Riders’ offence would be faced with a long field.

Starting on their own 21-yard line, Craig Dickenson would call on the talents of his quarterback to guide them down the field. After a false start penalty called on Ricardo Louis forced the Riders back five yards, Fajardo found Mitchell Picton before calling his own number twice. After racking up 11 yards on the ground, Fajardo would connect with Lenius for a big gain in the Lions’ territory. Neither Powell nor Fajardo would garner a first down, which saw the Riders call on Lauther to take the field. After being good on his third attempt of the game, the Lions’ were on the opposite end of the score as the Riders led 9-7.

The Lions clawed back and reclaimed the lead on the heels of Reilly, whose seven-straight completions had the Lions positioned in the Riders’ red zone with less than 30 seconds left in the half. After a blindside hit forced a pass intended for Burnham in the end zone to fall incomplete, Reilly found Whitehead for their second touchdown connection of the game.

After the Riders’ offence flipped the field off back-to-back completions by Fajardo, a textbook pass breakup in the end zone by Edwards-Cooper would force the Riders to kick again. Lauther would then hit his fourth field goal attempt, this one from 30-yards out to bring the Riders within striking distance of the lead.

Jimmy Camacho would steal the Lions’ lead right back on their next possession as his first field goal attempt of the night was good from 32 yards out.

The night’s first turnover would come off a Jon Ryan punt that was bobbled by Whitehead and recovered by Blace Brown. This would prove costly for the Lions, as Fajardo found Louis in stride battling single coverage for a 23-yard touchdown, putting them out front by a single point.

The Lions then capitalized on a pass interference call on Ed Gainey, as Shaquille Cooper collected the handoff from Reilly and crossed the goal line to swing the score back in the Lions’ favour.

With under a minute to go, a short punt by the Lions set the stage for the dramatics.

With the ball on the Lions’ 54-yard line, Fajardo and the Riders’ offence came out firing. Fajardo made three quick passes, working their way down to the five-yard line. After being sacked for a loss of four, Fajardo linked up with Kyran Moore near the goal line before lining up under centre and scoring the go-ahead touchdown.

The Riders padded their lead on the final kickoff of the game, as another Whitehead fumble was scooped up and returned for a touchdown by Demarquis Gates.

Next up for the Lions is a date with the West-Division leading Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday night at 10:oo p.m. ET at BC Place. Saskatchewan will travel to Calgary to tangle with the Stampeders next Saturday at 7:00 p.m. ET.

Tennessee Titans Week 3 Game Release

0

NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans (1-1) return home this week to face the AFC South rival Indianapolis Colts (0-2). Kickoff at Nissan Stadium (capacity 69,143) is scheduled for noon CDT on Sunday, Sept. 26.

TITANS LOOK TO BUILD ON OVERTIME WIN AT SEATTLE
Last week at Seattle, the Titans scored the final 17 points of the game to stun the Seahawks 33-30 in overtime. They faced a 15-point deficit at halftime and trailed by 14 points in the fourth quarter before rallying to tie the score at 30-30 with less than a minute remaining in regulation.

In overtime, Randy Bullock’s 36-yard field goal—his fourth field goal of the game in his first appearance in a Titans uniform—gave Tennessee its sixth consecutive overtime victory and its fourth (4-0) under head coach Mike Vrabel. Titans running back Derrick Henry rushed for 182 yards and scored three second-half touchdowns, including a 60-yarder and lastly a oneyard plunge with 29 seconds on the clock in the fourth quarter. His 237 scrimmage yards (55 receiving) amounted to the 10th-best total in franchise history and the fourth-highest output of his career.

Meanwhile, quarterback Ryan Tannehill registered 347 yards on 27-of-40 passing. He was credited with his 10th game-winning drive since arriving in Tennessee in 2019, the most of any quarterback since that point. Tannehill delivered six passes to wide receiver Julio Jones, who totaled 128 yards in his second game with the organization. Jones notched his 59th 100-yard career game in the regular season and is now tied with Marvin Harrison for third place in NFL history in 100-yard receiving games behind only Jerry Rice (76) and Randy Moss (64).

With the heroics from Henry, Tannehill and Jones, the trio gave the franchise its 10th all-time game with a 100-yard rusher, 300-yard passer and 100-yard receiver. The offense totaled 33 first downs at Seattle, tied for the second-highest amount in franchise history and the most since Nov. 10, 1991. The 532 total yards by the Titans (212 rushing, 320 passing) were their most since a franchise-record 607 total yards in an overtime win against Houston on Oct. 18, 2020. By possessing the ball for 42 minutes and 33 seconds, the Titans had their best time of possession since Oct. 1, 2000 against the New York Giants (42:46).

THE COLTS
After dropping their first game of 2021 to the Seahawks, the Colts hosted the Los Angeles Rams in Week 2. They battled from being down 11 points in the second half to tie the score at 24-24 in the fourth quarter. But Matt Gay’s 38-yard field goal with 2:23 remaining gave the Rams a 27-24 win.

The Colts are in their fourth season under head coach Frank Reich. He spearheaded two playoff berths in his first three campaigns, including a wild card appearance after an 11-5 finish in 2020.

During the offseason, the Colts acquired veteran quarterback Carson Wentz in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles. The former  second-overall NFL draft pick (2016) produced four 3,000-yard passing seasons with the Eagles, including a career-high 4,039 yards in 2019. In his first two games with the Colts, he totaled 498 passing yards with three touchdowns and one interception. However, he exited last week’s game against the Rams with an ankle injury, and backup Jacob Eason finished the contest at quarterback.

SERIES HISTORY

The Titans and Colts have played 53 all-time games, including playoffs. The Colts lead the series 35-18. They have split the series in  each of the past two seasons.

In 2020, the Titans and Colts played two games in a three-week span. In the first meeting on Nov. 12, a nationally-televised Thursday night game in Tennessee, the Colts scored 24 consecutive points and took advantage of Titans special teams miscues to secure a 34-17 victory. The Titans had a punt for 17 yards, a punt blocked and a missed field goal contribute to the defeat.

In the 2020 rematch at Lucas Oil Stadium on Nov. 29, the Titans won 45-26. Derrick Henry rushed for 178 yards and three touchdowns, while Ryan Tannehill threw for 221 yards with a 69-yard touchdown to A.J. Brown. Brown added a late 42-yard kickoff return touchdown to become the first player in franchise history with a receiving touchdown and a kickoff return touchdown in the same game.

The Colts swept the season series every year from 2012 through 2016 until 2017, when the Titans swept the season series for the first time since 2002.

The Titans and Colts have met only once in the postseason, a 19-16 Titans victory in a Divisional Playoff game in the RCA Dome on Jan. 16, 1999. Eddie George rushed for 162 yards, including a 68-yard touchdown run to help lead Tennessee during its run to Super Bowl XXXIV.

Three years later, in 2002, the NFL realigned, and the AFC South was created. The Titans moved from the AFC Central, and the Colts moved from the AFC East to form half of the new division.

The teams first clashed in 1970 following the AFL-NFL merger. The then-Baltimore Colts defeated the then-Houston Oilers 24-20 during the Colts’ run to a Super Bowl V Championship.

In 2016, he was a member of an offensive staff that helped the Falcons win the NFC title as QB Matt Ryan set single-season franchise marks for passing yards (4,944), completion percent- age (69.9) and TD passes (38) along with an average of 9.26 yards per attempt that ranked No. 1 in league history among QBs with 500-plus attempts. LaFleur got his start in the NFL coaching ranks with the Houston Texans as an offensive assistant in 2008-09, where he was part of a staff that helped the Texans rank in the top five in the league in total offense and passing offense in both of those seasons. In 2009, LaFleur assisted then offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Kyle Shanahan with the QBs as the Texans ranked No. 4 in the league in total offense (383.1 ypg). He then spent four seasons (2010-13) as the quarterbacks coach of the Washington Redskins and one season (2014) as quarterbacks coach at the University of Notre Dame.
