Boston options infielder Michael Chavis to Triple-A Worcester

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today added right-handed pitcher Yacksel Rios to the active major league roster. To make room, the club optioned infielder Michael Chavis to Triple-A Worcester following last night’s game against the Atlanta Braves.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Rios, 27, was acquired from the Seattle Mariners on Monday in exchange for cash considerations. The right-hander has made 69 major league appearances with the Philadelphia Phillies (2017-19), Pittsburgh Pirates (2019-20), and Mariners (2021), going 5-2 with a 6.47 ERA (52 ER/72.1 IP). Selected by Philadelphia in the 12th round of the 2011 June Draft, he spent parts of nine seasons in the Phillies organization before the Pirates claimed him off waivers on August 3, 2019. Signed by the Tampa Bay Rays as a minor league free agent in January, Rios posted a 0.66 ERA (1 ER/13.2 IP) in 12 games with Triple-A Durham this season before being traded to Seattle on June 4. Born in Caguas, Puerto Rico, he attended Doctora Conchita Cuevas High School.

Chavis, 25, has appeared in 11 games over three stints with Boston this season. He is 9-for-33 (.273) with one home run, four doubles, seven runs scored, and two RBI, making five starts at second base and two at first base. Chavis began the season at the Alternate Training Site and has played in 19 games with Worcester, batting .263 (20-for-76) with three home runs and a .737 OPS. In 148 major league games (2019-21), he has hit .243 (128-for-526) with 24 home runs and 79 RBI.

Griffin Jax optioned to Triple-A St. Paul

SEATTLE, WA – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have reinstated left-handed pitcher Caleb Thielbar from the 10-day Injured List.

Thielbar, who missed the last 12 games with a left groin strain, has appeared in 20 games this season, posting a 4.29 ERA (21.0 IP, 10 ER) with seven walks, 31 strikeouts and a 13.29 strikeouts-per-9.0 innings pitched ratio.

To make room on the 26-man roster, the Twins have optioned right-handed pitcher Griffin Jax to Triple-A St. Paul. The 26-year-old appeared in three games for the Twins, posting an 8.64 ERA (8.1 IP, 8 ER) with three walks and nine strikeouts.

Additionally, right-handed pitcher Shaun Anderson has been reinstated from the 10-day Injured List (right hand finger blisters) and optioned to Triple-A St. Paul. Anderson has appeared in four games for the Twins this season, posting a 9.35 ERA (8.2 IP, 9 ER) with five walks and eight strikeouts.

NEW YORK – The Chicago Cubs today selected right-handed pitcher Robert Stock from Triple-A Iowa, transferred catcher P.J. Higgins to the 60-day injured list and optioned right-handed pitcher Trevor Megill to Iowa. Additionally, the Cubs placed right-handed pitcher Dillon Maples on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to June 15) with a right triceps strain and recalled right-handed pitcher Cory Abbott from Iowa.

Stock will wear uniform number 89 and will start tonight’s 6:10 p.m. CT game against the New York Mets at Citi Field.

Stock, 31 has appeared in nine games (two starts) for Triple-A Iowa this season, going 0-3 with a 4.12 ERA (9 ER/19.2 IP). He made seven relief appearances for Iowa in May, before starting two games in June. The right-hander went 0-2 with a 4.63 ERA (6 ER/11.2 IP) in the seven relief outings and pitched to an 0-1 record with a 3.38 ERA (3 ER/8.0 IP) in his two starts.

The six-foot one-inch Stock was claimed off waivers by the Cubs from Boston on December 2, 2020. Stock joined the Red Sox after being claimed off waivers from Philadelphia on July 27, 2020 and pitched the entire 2020 season with Boston, going 0-1 with a 4.73 ERA (7 ER/13.1 IP). Originally selected as a catcher by the St. Louis Cardinals in the second round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Southern California, Stock converted to a pitcher prior to the 2012 season. The right-hander is 2-2 with a 4.24 ERA (30 ER/63.2 IP) in 52 career major league relief outings and is 22-14 with a 3.76 ERA (145 ER/346.2 IP) in 226 career minor league appearances (nine starts).

Abbott, 25, made his major league debut with Chicago earlier this month, pitching to a 2.70 ERA (1 ER/3.1 IP) in two relief outings, walking one and striking out two. He pitched 2.0 scoreless innings in his major league debut, June 5 in San Francisco, after he was recalled from Iowa that day. With the I-Cubs this season, Abbott is 1-3 with a 6.03 ERA (21 ER/31.1 IP) with 15 walks and 49 strikeouts in six starts.

Abbott, the 2019 Cubs Minor League Pitcher of the Year, was selected by Chicago in the second round of the 2017 draft out of Loyola Marymount University and is 17-17 with a 3.17 ERA (108 ER/307.0 IP) in 59 career minor league starts. He has recorded a 1.18 WHIP and averaged 10.7 strikeouts per 9.0 innings, striking out 364 batters with 109 walks.

Maples, 29, owns a 1.99 ERA (5 ER/22.2 IP) in 18 relief appearances for Chicago this season, striking out 32 batters for an average of 12.7 strikeouts per 9.0 innings while walking 14.

Megill, 27, has tossed 3.0 scoreless innings in four relief appearances for the Cubs this season, allowing three walks while striking out two.

Higgins, 28, is batting .043 (1-for-23) in nine games (five starts) for the Cubs this season. The right-handed hitting catcher was placed on the 10-day injured list on June 11 (retroactive to June 10) with a strained right forearm.

A’s reinstate OF Laureano from injured list; option OF Bolt to Las Vegas

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland A’s reinstated outfielder Ramón Laureano from the 10-day injured list and optioned outfielder Skye Bolt to Triple-A Las Vegas, the club announced today.

Laureano was placed on the IL June 1 retroactive to May 28 with a strained right hip and did not have a rehab assignment. He was batting .257 with 11 home runs, 22 RBI and eight stolen bases in 48 games at the time of the injury, including .292 with eight home runs over his last 24 games.

Bolt was recalled when Laureano went on the IL and went 1-for-13 in nine games, including three starts in center field. The one hit was his first Major League home run last Saturday against Kansas City. Bolt is hitting .375 with three home runs, 11 RBI and a .488 on-base percentage in 20 games with Las Vegas.

Kennedy leads A.L. in save percentage

Houston, Texas – The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has activated right-handed pitcher Ian Kennedy from the 10-day Injured List. Kennedy (#31) will be active for tonight’s game in Houston.

To make room on the active roster, left-handed pitcher Hyeon-jong Yang has been optioned to Triple-A Round Rock.

Kennedy was placed on the IL on June 9, retroactive to June 6, with a left hamstring strain and today is the first day he was eligible to be activated. He has no record with 12 saves and a 2.53 ERA (6 ER/21.1 IP) over 21 relief appearances with the Rangers this season. He leads all qualifying American League closers in save percentage at 92.3% (12-13) and is fourth in the A.L. in saves.

Yang is 0-3 with a 5.59 ERA in eight games/four starts since his contract was selected from the Alternate Training Site on April 26.

Following today’s transactions, the Rangers remain at the 40-man limit on the club’s Major League roster, along with eight players on the 60-day Injured List.

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers selected the contract of outfielder Steven Souza Jr. and designated right-handed pitcher Nate Jones for assignment.

Souza Jr., 32, appeared in 21 games for Triple-A Oklahoma City, batting .284 (19-for-67) with six homers and 16 RBI. He last appeared in a Major League game last season for the Chicago Cubs, batting .148 with two doubles, one homer and five RBI. He has spent parts of six seasons in the Major Leagues, slashing .232/.322/.416 with 71 homers and 203 RBI in 482 games. He had a career year in 2017 for the Rays, amassing 30 homers and driving in 78 in a career-best 148 games. He signed with the Dodgers as a minor league free agent on April 12.

Jones, 35, was signed by the Dodgers as a minor league free agent on May 14 and appeared in eight games for the Dodgers, going 0-0 with a 8.31 ERA (8 ER/8.2 IP) and seven strikeouts. The 10-year Major League veteran began the season with Atlanta, appearing in 12 games, posting an 0-2 record with a 3.48 ERA (6 ER/10.1 IP) and seven strikeouts. In his 10-year career with Chicago (2012-2019), Cincinnati (2020) and Atlanta (2021), he is a combined 22-16 with nine saves and a 3.45 ERA (126 ER/329.0 IP). He was originally drafted by the White Sox in the fifth round of the 2007 First Year Player Draft out of Northern Kentucky University.

PHILADELPHIA  – The recently announced June 25th fight RDR Promotions fight card at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia will be moved to Friday July 23rd. This will set p one of the biggest weekend in recent Philadelphia boxing history as RDR Promotions will present “Crossroads” fight weekend with two huge nights of boxing on Friday, July 23rd and Saturday, July 24th (Card to be announced this week).

 

Tickets Bought from Fighters, must be returned to the Point of Purchase for a refund. Those tickets WILL NOT be honored on July 23rd; Tickets Bought at the 2300 Arena WILL BE honored.

 

In the main event on July 23rd, will be a “cant miss” eight-round lightweight bout between Nahir Albright and Jeremy Hill.

 

Albright of Sicklerville, New Jersey has a record of 12-1 with six knockouts.

 

The 25 year-old Albright has been streaking as he stopped his last four opponents which includes early wins over Dante Cox (6-1) and his fight when he stopped former world title challenger Cosme Rivera in eight-rounds on May 28th in Rivera’s home country of Mexico. Albright also has wins over Danny Murray (1-0), Glenford Nickey (4-1-1) and Roy McGill (6-1-1).

 

Hill of New Orleans has a record of 15-1 with 10 knockouts.

 

Hiil, 28 years-old is a three-year pro who has wins over Leshawn Alcoks (1-0), Xavier Wilson (11-1-1) and Travis Castellon (16-3-1). Hill is coming of of a fourth round stoppage over Deivi Julio on May 15th in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

 

Also taking part in an eight-round bout will be Derrick Whitley Jr. taking on an opponent to be named in a welterweight bout.

 

Whitley of Springfield, MA is 6-1-1 and is a four-year professional. He is coming of a no-contest against Jermaine Corley, as Whitley suffered a cut before the fourth round.

 

Donald “No Love” Smith (12-1, 8 KOs) of Philadelphia will take on an opponent to be named in a eight-round featherweight bout.

 

In a six-round heavyweight tilt, Garrett Wilson (18-17-1, 8 KOs) of Philadelphia fights Joel Caudle (8-5-2, 5 KOs) of Raleigh, NC.

 

In four-round Bouts:

 

Ryan Umberger (4-0, 4 KOs) of Bensalem, PA takes on Ryan Schwartzberg (0-1-1) in a junior middleweight fight.

 

Afunwa King (3-1, 1 KO) of Bronx, NY takes on Clarence Whitehead (0-2 of Philadelphia in a light heavyweight fight.

 

Isaiah Johnson (1-0, 1 KO) of Philadelphia fights Damien Robinson (1-0, 1 KO) of North Carolina in a super lightweight contest.

Washington Nationals select the contract of Justin Miller

The Washington Nationals selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Justin Miller and designated right-handed pitcher Rogelio Armenteros for assignment on Tuesday. Additionally, the Nationals placed right-handed pitcher Max Scherzer on the 10-day Injured List (retroactive to June 12) with groin inflammation. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcements.

 

Miller, 34, joins the Nationals after going 1-0 with five saves, a 0.55 ERA (1 ER/16.1 IP) and 29 strikeouts in 13 outings with Triple-A Rochester. He’s allowed nine hits (.161 opp. AVG) and issued four walks along the way. He allowed the lone earned run in his second outing of the season and since that point, has tossed 13.1 scoreless innings across 11 appearances.

 

Miller spent parts of two seasons (2018-19) in Washington’s bullpen. He went 8-1 with a 3.71 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 68 appearances (68.0 IP). All told, he’s appeared in 150 Major League games, posting a 4.43 ERA across five seasons with Detroit (2014), Colorado (2015-16) and Washington (2018-19).

 

Armenteros, 26, went 0-4 with a 5.83 ERA in seven starts for Triple-A Rochester.

 

Scherzer, 36, is 5-4 with a 2.21 ERA and 104 strikeouts in 13 starts for Washington this season.
