Angels acquire RHP Janson Junk & RHP Elvis Peguero from Yankees, LHP Andrew Heaney and cash considerations traded to New York (A.L.)

ANAHEIM – The Angels today acquired minor league right-handed pitchers Janson Junk and Elvis Peguero from the New York Yankees in exchange for LHP Andrew Heaney and cash considerations.

 

Junk, 25, has appeared in 14 games (12 starts) for Double-A Somerset this season, fashioning a 4-1 record with a 1.78 ERA (65.2 IP – 13 ER). The right-hander leads all of Double-A in ERA, ranks third in batting average against (.185) and fourth in WHIP (0.96). Ranked 27th by MLB.com on New York’s Top-30 prospects, Junk has posted a 16-15 lifetime record with a 3.72 ERA (254.1-105 ER) across four minor league seasons.

 

Peguero, 24, has combined to go 4-1 with a 2.23 ERA (44.1 IP – 11 ER) in 21 games (all in relief) between High-A Hudson Valley and Double-A Somerset this season. He has compiled 57 strikeouts while walking 16 this year. A native of Cotui, Dominican Republic, Peguero was originally signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2015.

 

Heaney, 30, has made 18 starts for the Angels this season, going 6-7 with a 5.27 ERA (94 IP – 55 ER) and 113 strikeouts. In seven seasons in an Angels uniform, Heaney went 30-33 with a 4.51 ERA (569.1 IP – 285 ER) and 593 strikeouts across 102 starts. Heaney was acquired by the Angels on Dec. 10, 2014 from the Dodgers in exchange for Howie Kendrick.

Red Sox announce roster moves

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today made the following roster moves:

 

  • Recalled infielder Jonathan Araúz from Triple-A Worcester.

 

  • Returned right-handed pitcher Hirokazu Sawamura from his injury rehabilitation assignment with Worcester and reinstated him from the 10-day injured list.

 

  • Designated outfielder Marcus Wilson for assignment.

 

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

 

Araúz, 22, played in four games for Boston during his first major league stint this season, batting .250 (2-for-8) with one double and one RBI in four games from May 12 to 16. The switch-hitter has played in 55 games for Worcester this season, batting .224 (41-for-183) with four doubles, one triple, six home runs, and 27 RBI while making 33 starts at second base, 11 at third base, and eight at shortstop. Araúz made his major league debut with the Red Sox in 2020. In 29 career games with the club, the native of Panama has hit .250 (20-for-80) with 10 RBI.

 

Sawamura, 33, was placed on the injured list on July 23 (retroactive to July 20) with right tricep inflammation. The right-handed pitcher has a 2.87 ERA (12 ER/37.2 IP) and .207 opponent batting average in 38 appearances this season, his major league debut. He has stranded 19 of 22 inherited runners, including each of his last nine. Among major league rookie relievers in 2021, Sawamura ranks tied for seventh in strikeouts (44), eighth in appearances (38), and 11th in innings pitched (37.2). He made his only rehab appearance on Wednesday, starting for Worcester and striking out one batter in 1.0 scoreless inning.

 

Wilson, 24, has hit .242 (53-for-219) with an .822 OPS, 10 home runs, and 30 RBI in 64 games for Worcester this season, making 38 starts in right field, 18 in left field, and one in center field. Over 562 minor league games in the Arizona Diamondbacks (2014-19) and Red Sox (2019-21) organizations, the right-handed hitter has batted .256 (516-for-2,013) with 50 home runs and 254 RBI.

Cubs acquire two prospects from Giants for INF Kris Bryant

WASHINGTON D.C. – The Chicago Cubs today acquired minor league right-handed pitcher Caleb Kilian and minor league outfielder Alexander Canario from the San Francisco Giants for infielder Kris Bryant.

 

Canario, 21, has hit .235 (56-for-238) with 14 doubles, three triples, nine home runs and 29 RBI in 65 games for Single-A San Jose this season. He is the number nine ranked prospect in the Giants system according to MLB.com after signing with the organization as an international free agent in July of 2016.

 

Canario, a six-foot one-inch right-handed hitter, has batted .276 (244-for-885) with 56 doubles, 11 triples, 36 home runs and 147 RBI with 113 walks in 235 career minor league games. Born in Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic, his first professional action came in 2017 with the DSL Giants and in 2019 he batted .318 (75-for-236) with 20 doubles, two triples, 16 home runs and 54 RBI in 59 games between the Rookie League Giants and Single-A Salem-Keizer.

 

Kilian, 24, was selected by the Giants in the eighth round of the 2019 draft out of Texas Tech University and this season is 6-2 with a 2.13 ERA (20 ER/84.2 IP) in 15 starts between Single-A Eugene and Double-A Richmond. He has walked nine and struck out 96 in 84.2 innings, good for an average of 10.2 strikeouts per 9.0 innings.

 

In two minor league seasons, the six-foot four-inch Kilian has pitched to a 6-2 record with a 1.79 ERA (20 ER/100.2 IP) in 22 games (21 starts), walking 11, striking out 113 and recording a .775 WHIP. In 2020, he participated in the Giants instructional league.

 

Bryant, 29, has hit .279 (865-for-3,100) with 191 doubles, 19 triples, 160 home runs and 465 RBI in 833 games spanning seven seasons with Chicago. The 2015 N.L. Rookie of the Year, the 2016 N.L. MVP and four-time N.L. All-Star batted .267 (87-for-326) with 19 doubles, two triples, 18 home runs and 51 RBI in 93 games for the Cubs this season.

 

Bryant leaves the Cubs as one of just three third basemen in franchise history with multiple 30-plus homer campaigns, joining Ron Santo (four times) and Aramis Ramirez (three times). From 2015-17, he became the first Cub ever to both hit 25-or-more homers and play in at least 150 games in each of his first three major league seasons. His 160 home runs rank 15th in franchise history.

Rangers Acquire RHP’s Spencer Howard, Kevin Gowdy, and Josh Gessner from Philadelphia Phillies in Exchange for RHP’s Kyle Gibson, Ian Kennedy, Hans Crouse, and Cash Considerations

Arlington, Texas – The Texas Rangers today acquired three players in a trade with the Philadelphia Phillies:

 

To Texas: RHP Spencer Howard, RHP Kevin Gowdy, and RHP Josh Gessner

To Philadelphia: RHP Kyle Gibson, RHP Ian Kennedy, RHP Hans Crouse and cash considerations

Howard, 25, was rated by Baseball America as the top prospect in the Phillies organization prior to the 2021 season, when he was also tabbed by the publication as the no. 27 prospect in baseball. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound right-hander was also rated as the no. 42 prospect in the game entering 2021 by MLB.com. He has gone 0-2 with a 5.72 ERA (18 ER/28.1 IP) over 11 games/7 starts spanning four stints with the Phillies in 2021 (April 13, April 21-25, May 22-June 28, July 21-current). He has also posted a 1-0 record and 1.25 ERA (3 ER/21.2 IP) with a 1.015 WHIP, 9 walks, and 28 strikeouts over 6 games/starts with Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He made his Major League debut with the Phillies in 2020, making 6 starts. Originally the Phillies’ second round selection in the 2017 MLB Draft, the central California native pitched at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo.

 

The 23-year-old Gowdy has spent this season with High-A Jersey Shore, going 4-5 with a 4.43 ERA (30 ER/61.0 IP) over 14 games/12 starts while averaging a career-best 9.3 strikeouts per 9 innings. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound right-hander was selected by Philadelphia in the second round of the 2016 draft out of Santa Barbara (Calif.) High School. He has pitched three seasons in the Phillies’ farm system, going 4-12 with a 4.53 ERA across 42 games/32 starts. Gowdy was a member of the USA Baseball 18U National Team that won a gold medal at the 2015 WBSC World Cup in Japan.

 

Gessner, 21, has pitched in three games (two starts) for the Florida Complex League Phillies (Rookie) this season, striking out 14 of 30 batters faced (46.7%) with a 1.17 ERA (1 ER/7.2 IP). The 6-foot-1, 210-pound right-hander has gone 1-0, 2.21 ERA (5 ER/20.2 IP) in nine games/five starts, all at the Rookie level, since signing with Philadelphia as a non-drafted free agent out of Sydney, Australia on 6/11/19. Gessner, who was born in Midland, Texas, appeared in two games for the Sydney Blue Sox of the Australian Baseball League as a 17-year-old in 2017.

 

Gibson has gone 6-3 with a 2.87 ERA over 19 games/starts with Texas this season, ranking among American League leaders in home runs allowed per 9 innings (2nd, 0.72), ERA (3rd), and quality starts (3rd, 13). Selected to the A.L. All-Star team for the first time in his career this season, Gibson went 8-9 with a 3.79 ERA over 31 games/starts in 2020-21 after signing a three-year free agent contract with Texas on December 6, 2019.

 

Kennedy has no record with 16 saves and a 2.51 ERA over 32 relief appearances with Texas this season, along with a 1.052 WHIP figure. He has gone 16-for-17 (94.1%) in save chances this year, the 2nd-best save percentage in the American League.

 

Crouse has gone 3-2 with a 3.35 ERA over 13 games/starts with Double-A Frisco this season. He was the Rangers’ 2nd round selection in the 2017 June draft.

Washington Nationals select the contracts of Gabe Klobosits and Adrián Sanchez and recall Tres Barrera

The Washington Nationals selected the contracts of right-handed pitcher Gabe Klobosits and infielder Adrián Sanchez on Friday. Additionally they recalled catcher Tres Barrera from Triple-A Rochester. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcements.

 

Klobosits, 26, went 3-2 with seven saves and a 0.56 ERA (2 ER/32.0 IP) in 24 games between Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Rochester this season. He recorded 36 strikeouts, 10 walks, one home run allowed and a .183 opponents’ batting average and tossed more than 1.0 inning in nine of the 24 games.

 

Prior to having his contract selected, Klobosits tossed 12.0 scoreless innings across nine outings with Triple-A Rochester. He allowed just eight hits in 44 at bats (.182 opp. AVG) with 10 strikeouts and two walks.

 

A 36th-round pick in the 2017 First-Year Player Draft out of Auburn (AL) University, Klobosits has pitched to a 1.45 ERA while going 5-3 with 13 saves in 73 outings across five professional seasons (2016-21).

 

Sanchez, 30, joins the Nationals for his first Major League assignment of the season. He hit .336 with eight doubles, four homers, 18 RBI, nine walks, two stolen bases and 19 runs scored in 36 games with the Red Wings. Prior to being recalled, Sanchez had reached base safely in 16 straight games, batting .354 with five doubles, three home runs, eight RBI, and nine runs scored.

 

Barrera, 26, joins the Nationals for the third time this season. In 16 games this season, he is hitting .298 (14-for-47) with three doubles, one triple, one home run, five RBI, four walks and six runs scored. He served as the 27th man in the second game of Washington’s doubleheader against the Philadelphia Phillies on July 29.

Dodgers acquire LHP Danny Duffy

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired left-handed pitcher Danny Duffy and cash considerations from the Kansas City Royals for a player to be named later. In order to make room on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers designated outfielder DJ Peters for assignment.

 

Duffy, 32, appeared in 13 games (12 starts) for the Royals this season, going 4-3 with a 2.51 ERA (17 ER/61.0 IP) and 65 strikeouts against 22 walks. He was placed on the injured list on July 20 with a left flexor strain but was 0-0 with a 2.77 ERA (4 ER/13.0 IP) in three July starts. The Lompoc, CA native is in his 11th season with the Royals organization and is a combined 68-68 with a 3.95 ERA (514 ER/1172.1 IP) and 1,048 strikeouts. He was drafted by the Royals in the third round of the 2007 First Year Player Draft out of Cabrillo High School.

 

Peters, 25, appeared in 18 games for the Dodgers this season, batting .192 with one homer and four RBI. In five minor league seasons with the Dodgers organization, he hit .266 (503-for-1894) with 96 homers and 290 RBI. He had been with the organization since being drafted in the fourth round of the 2016 First Year Player Draft out of Western Nevada College.

Rays complete three-player trade with Mariners

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.—The Tampa Bay Rays have acquired right-handed relief pitcher JT Chargois and minor league infielder Austin Shenton from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for right-handed relief pitcher Diego Castillo.

 

Chargois (SHA-gwah), 30, went 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA (30-IP, 10-ER) in 31 appearances, all in relief, for the Mariners this season, including a run of eight consecutive scoreless appearances snapped in his most recent outing. He was selected to the major league roster from the alternate training site on May 9, and since then is tied for the Mariners lead in appearances. He has limited opponents to a .217 avg. (23-for-106), including .184 (7-for-38) against left-handed hitters. According to StatCast, he has thrown his slider for 69.0 pct. of his pitches this season, fourth in the majors behind Matt Wisler (90.0), Austin Adams (88.5) and Diego Castillo (70.4). He has averaged 95.8 mph on his 127 sinkers, including a top velocity of 97.6 mph.

 

Chargois spent the 2020 season with the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles in Japan’s Pacific League, going 0-3 with a 5.81 ERA (26.1-IP, 17-ER) in 31 appearances. He has spent parts of four seasons in the majors for the Minnesota Twins (2016), Los Angeles Dodgers (2018-19) and Mariners (2021), going 5-5 with a 4.13 ERA (106.2-IP, 49-ER) in 116 appearances, all out of the bullpen. He was selected by the Twins in the second round of the 2012 Amateur Draft out of Rice University.

 

Shenton, 23, earned a July 16 promotion from High-A Everett to Double-A Arkansas and is batting .300/.414/.566 (80-for-267) with 29 doubles, 12 home runs and 61 RBI in 67 games between the two levels. He ranks among full-season minor league leaders in runs scored (61, tied for fourth), doubles (first), extra-base hits (44, second) and RBI (tied for seventh). At the time of his promotion, he led High-A West in runs scored (55), doubles (24), extra-base hits (38), RBI (53), slugging pct. (.576) and on-base plus slugging (.994), ranked second in homers (11), third in on-base pct. (.418) and fourth in avg. (.295).

 

Between the two levels this season, Shenton has made 45 starts at third base, 15 starts at first base, four starts at designated hitter and three starts at second base. He is currently ranked by MLB.com as the No. 17 prospect in the Mariners organization. In two minor league seasons, he is a .299/.399/.542 (139-for-465) hitter with 19 home runs and 97 RBI in 120 games. He was selected by the Mariners in the fifth round of the 2019 Amateur Draft out of Florida International University, where he played for two seasons (2018-19) after transferring from Bellevue Community College in Washington. He was previously drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 34th round in 2016 out of Bellingham (Wash.) High School but did not sign.

 

Castillo, 27, went 2-4 with a 2.72 ERA (36.1-IP, 11-ER) in 37 appearances, all in relief, for the Rays this season, including an active streak of 10 consecutive scoreless outings beginning on June 23. He was signed by the Rays on March 5, 2014 out of the Dominican Republic, debuted in 2018 and spent parts of the last four seasons in the majors, going 14-14 with a 2.99 ERA (183.1-IP, 61-ER) in 167 appearances (17 starts). Last postseason, he went 1-0 with a 1.64 ERA (11-IP, 2-ER) in 10 appearances and was the winning pitcher in Game 5 of the American League Division Series over the New York Yankees.

Mariners pitcher Santiago disciplined

The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that Seattle Mariners pitcher Héctor Santiago has received an 80-game suspension without pay after testing positive for exogenous Testosterone, a performance-enhancing substance in violation of Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

 

The suspension of Santiago is effective immediately.

Cubs acquire two prospects from the New York Yankees for first baseman Anthony Rizzo

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today acquired minor league right-handed pitcher Alexander Vizcaíno and minor league outfielder Kevin Alcántara from the New York Yankees for first baseman Anthony Rizzo and a cash consideration.

 

Vizcaíno, 24, is the ninth-ranked prospect in the Yankees farm system according to MLB.com. A native of San Cristóbal, D.R., Vizcaíno signed with the Yankees as an international free agent in May of 2016 and has posted a 4.95 ERA (146 ER/265.1 IP) in 62 career minor league games (53 starts) with one complete game and a 12-21 record. He has averaged just over one strikeout per inning pitched, striking out 268 batters compared to 107 walks.

 

The six-foot two-inch Vizcaíno was named a South Atlantic League All-Star in 2019 with Single-A Charleston, going 5-5 with a 4.41 ERA (43 ER/87.2 IP) and a complete game for the club before he was promoted to Single-A Tampa in late July. All told, Vizcaíno in 2019 was 6-6 with a 4.37 ERA (56 ER/115.1 IP) with 38 walks, 128 strikeouts and a 1.31 WHIP.

 

Vizcaíno this season has made six appearances between the Rookie League Yankees and Single-A Hudson Valley (7.50 ERA) after starting the campaign on the injured list.

 

Alcántara, 19, is the 12th-ranked prospect in the Yankees farm system according to MLB.com. He owns a .269 batting average (50-for-186) with nine doubles, three triples, two home runs and 22 RBI in 49 career minor league games after signing with the Yankees as an international free agent in July of 2018.

 

A six-foot six-inch right-handed hitter from San Cristóbal, D.R., Alcántara this year has batted .360 (9-for-25) with a double, a home run and three RBI in eight games for the Florida Complex League Yankees.

 

Rizzo, 31, this season owns a .248 average (80-for-323) with 16 doubles, three triples, 14 home runs and 40 RBI in 92 games with the Cubs. Since joining the organization prior to the 2012 season, Rizzo has amassed 242 home runs, 784 RBI, 276 doubles, a .272 average (1,311-for-4,812) and a .372 OBP in 1,308 games for Chicago. He leaves ranked sixth on the club’s all-time home run list, 10th in extra-base hits (538), 13th in doubles and 19th in games played. Additionally, his 165 hit by pitches are a franchise mark.

 

A three-time N.L. All-Star and four-time N.L. Gold Glove winner, as well a N.L. Platinum Glove winner, a N.L. Silver Slugger Award winner and the recipient of the 2017 Roberto Clemente Award, Rizzo was acquired by Chicago from San Diego, January 6, 2012, with minor league pitcher Zach Cates for pitcher Andrew Cashner and minor league outfielder Kyung-Min Na.

Royals trade Duffy to Dodgers

K.C. sends Duffy and cash to L.A. for player to be named

 

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Kansas City Royals today announced they have traded left-handed pitcher Danny Duffy and cash to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for a player-to-be-named later. The 32-year old Duffy is currently on the 10-day Injured List with a left flexor strain.

 

Duffy has spent his entire career in the Royals’ organization after being selected in the third round of the 2007 draft. He’s 68-68 in 234 career appearances, including 204 starts, totaling 1172.1 innings with 1,048 strikeouts and an ERA of 3.95. His best single season was 2016 when he posted a 12-3 mark with a 3.51 ERA in 42 games (26 starts). Duffy pitched in both the 2014 and 2015 postseasons, highlighted by five total World Series appearances (all in relief).

 

He has been hampered by injury this year with this his second stint on the Injured List, returning to the 10-day list on July 20. Duffy was also on the IL from May 17-June 23 with a similar left flexor strain. A Southern California native, Duffy has made 13 appearances (12 starts) during the 2021 season, posting a 4-3 record with a 2.51 ERA, fanning 65 in 61.0 innings and holding opponents to a .226 average.
