0

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland A’s recalled outfielder Seth Brown from Triple-A Las Vegas, the club announced today.

Brown joins the A’s for the second time this year after batting .199 with 12 home runs and 30 RBI in 79 games during his first stint from April 6 to July 31. He went 4-for-14 (.286) with a double, triple and RBI in three games with the Aviators following his Aug. 1 option. Brown is tied for fifth among American League rookies in home runs. He has made 48 of his 49 starts this year against right-handed pitchers and is tied for the lead among AL pinch hitters in plate appearances (19).

JAVIER PÉREZ – INTERIM HEAD COACH, TORONTO FC

  1. That was a pretty disappointing performance. The club seemed to revert to some of its bad habits early in the season and frankly it looked like Philadelphia wanted it more at some points in the evening. What went wrong?

Yeah, I think we came, and this is a big red flag that we were expecting at some point, right. You make some steps forward and at one point, you make one step backward and it was tonight, we came flat in the first half. The team was sending some signs that it was going to be the case, but it was one of these games that you just have to go through and the only positive thing I think is it was an exercise to stay in the game.

In another moment of the season, probably this would be a much larger score line, right. We have that chance we get a penalty in the second half in the beginning, and I think that would probably help us a little bit to get back in the game. But we didn’t convert that one, and at least the second half, we didn’t — we didn’t concede any more goals.

I think I don’t want to read more than this is just a step backwards from all the step forwards we did in the last weeks. We just have to gather our forces, I would probably use the term — that’s in the locker room, but we just have to gather our forces and think about our next opponent is going to come very fast, which is going to be Saturday in a few days.

  1. You sat Chris Mavinga after 45 minutes. Just curious as to what your evaluation was of his performance this evening.

Yeah, I think Chris, like everybody else, right, the team, was flat. I don’t think you have to read more into that. The team didn’t come with the right mentality. We are all responsible for that. It’s not a matter of two points, one player or one single player or a couple of players.

I think we have — like we said in the locker room, we are together on this. When we succeed, we succeed together. When we fail, we fail together. And tonight, wasn’t a good night for Chris or any of the players on field or even for us.

  1. What goes into the notebook on a night like today? What do you see to address with the guys going forward?

On a night like tonight, there is no notebook. There is just I think — it’s as I said before in the previous three questions. We came flat. It doesn’t matter which formation or how you plan the game. We need to get into the right mentality, right energy to play and compete, especially against a team like Philadelphia that we know they are all energy.

  1. It was nice seeing Achara make his first appearance performance the team in over a year. What did you make of that and how was his performance on the pitch tonight?

Yeah, I’m glad you asked this question because when you find yourself 3-0 at halftime, obviously you try to get back in the game. You try to start the second half stronger to see if you can get an early goal. That’s what we tried to do. If the early goal doesn’t come, you have to start to take whatever positives you can take out of a game like tonight.

So we at least — in the second half and the other part was to see half was to see Achara back in the team. I think he had a decent performance in the circumstances, taking into account that he has been for so long out of the field. So yeah, we are happy to see that he was able to play, to get some minutes in his bag, and that is a big contribution for him and his reintegration to the group.

  1. Is there any update on Richie Laryea and do you expect to have Pozuelo back for the weekend?

Yes, I think Richie and Chris, we have to look at them once we go back tomorrow, back home. So I cannot pronounce right now what is the situation with any of the two. Alejandro, we will have to see. I don’t know today how he will go. He is training, and my focus was on the game today. And tomorrow I see Alejandro, in which condition he is to get back on to the team.

  1. You mentioned there were signs that something like this was a possibility heading into. What were some of those signs that you saw and is this just something that sort of happens every once in a while, when you get a schedule like this and taking in so many lessons?

It’s experience. It’s the sense; you sense these things. Because when you come from six straight losses, whoever thinks that we are going to make four straight wins or six straight wins doesn’t know anything about football, about soccer.

So we know that it’s never a straight line going up. It’s always some ups and some downs. I think by now we have a few signs to go up, and a sign down. It was due. Now what is important is just like I said, we gather our forces. We have a very strong opponent to play on Saturday, NYC FC. We are going to play them at home, and the important part will be that we are ready for that game and show that at home with our fans from the very first minute.

  1. On a similar note, one note change I noticed you made at halftime was reverting to something like a 4-2-3-1 formation. Can you tell us why you decided to go with the 5-3-2 today and make the change at halftime?

Yes, I think as I said before, we came flat. We were not doing what we were supposed to do at the beginning of the game. This is not blaming anyone. This is my fault as much as everybody else’s right, but probably more my fault.

But the reality that things were not clicking, we have to take a step back just to regain the control of the game, or at least to match up the game and that was a step, meaning that we were more able to be positioned more solidly, organize, not concede so many mistakes in midfield.

Because the problem, the problem we have in the beginning of the game, it was just too easy for them to play through the middle. We try to get that organized and solved at the beginning of game, but we didn’t — we didn’t do a great job as you can see.

MICHAEL BRADLEY – MIDFIELDER, TORONTO FC

  1. After some pretty encouraging performances the last few weeks, this seemed like a step back. What was your assessment of the evening?

Bad start. Not ready for their intensity and their energy. And then you get behind in the game early and you’re chasing. Obviously in that there’s some key moments that don’t go our way.

You know, 1-0, Richie Laryea has a big chance, if we can get back to 1-1 and obviously the game is very different. Obviously impossible to ever know for sure with angles and cameras and replays, but it sure looks like that third goal’s off-side and then obviously at 3-0, we have a penalty that gets saved. So we let ourselves down with a bad start.

And along the way we have a few — there’s some moments where you can start to get back into it and change the game a little bit, but you know, for different reasons. You know, one or two things don’t go our way, we didn’t make a play, and so it’s how the night goes.

  1. I think Javier mentioned that at times there was a lack of urgency in the first half. Is that a fair assessment in did you see that the same way?

My assessment is what I just said, which is you play against a team that relies on energy, mobility, intensity and trying to be dynamic, and you know, they are a team that — it’s a transition football team. It’s a team that wants to make the game fast; that wants to make the game chaotic in certain moments, and I don’t use the word chaotic in a negative way.

It’s just there’s teams all around the world that tilt the bar towards playing more vertical and playing, you know, more in transition and trying to press and counter press and that — they are one of those teams and if the game starts and for different reasons, we’re not really ready for that, then a bar tilts — tilts their way, and as I said, along the — along the way, there’s some moments that we have to get ourselves back into it in different ways and you know, we weren’t quite able to do it.

  1. A match like that, is that a cause for concern or just every so often you’re going to get a game like that when the games come as thick and fast as they do?

With all — with all due respect, like with our position right now, and the way the season has gone, we can’t afford to have many more nights like this. So is it a cause for concern? It’s another night similar to too many that we’ve had this year. And if we want to try to claw ourselves back into it, we can’t afford — we can’t afford many more, if any.

And so, you know, with the position that we’re in right now, you know, everything — every game matter, every point matters. You know, and so it’s a frustrating night. If you’re trying to find a positive, it’s that you play again in two days, in three days, and we get another chance to play at home. And, you know, look, the second half was still — we didn’t let things — we didn’t let things get away from us. We tried to push to get the first goal. Couldn’t quite do it, but yeah, again, we’ve got — we can’t afford many more like this.

  1. Perhaps one positive was the return of Achara. I guess you’ve seen the hard work he’s put in since going down in June. Just your thoughts about seeing the young man back in action.

Yeah, that is — that’s more than positive. He has worked so hard behind the scenes to get himself back in a position where he was able to be ready to step on the field tonight. He’s a great kid, a great young man. You know, the way that he injured himself last year, broke everyone’s heart.

And so to see him work his way back to see him get back on the field tonight, that part — that part was — that part was amazing, and we’re all happy for him, we’re all proud of him, and we, you know, want to continue to push him along because he’s a talented, talented young player.

Match Recap: Philadelphia Union 3, Toronto FC 0

Daniel Gazdag scores his first career MLS goal; Andre Blake and the Union earn their seventh clean sheet.

CHESTER, Pa. – The Philadelphia Union took on Toronto FC at home Wednesday night at Subaru Park. The team earned all three points after a 3-0 win. The Boys in Blue got off to a fast start in the first half. Jakob Glesnes opened up the scoring with a curling header from a corner kick from Daniel Gazdag in the 12th minute. Later, after being brought down by Toronto’s goalkeeper, Sergio Santos earned the team a penalty kick. Daniel Gazdag stepped up to the penalty spot and fired it into the back of the net for his first career MLS goal. Three minutes later, the Union scored again when Santos found himself on another breakaway, slotting it past the goalkeeper for his fourth goal of the MLS regular season. Martinez earned his first assist of the season with his pass to Santos. Andre Blake was needed early in the second half. Toronto was awarded a penalty in the 50th minute, but Blake would make a diving save. For the rest of the half, the Union saw the game out, limiting any more chances for Toronto to earn their seventh clean sheet of the regular season. With the draw, the Union now have 28 points and move to third place in the Eastern Conference standings.

The Union are on the road next to take on the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium on Sunday, August 8 (6:00 p.m. ET / PHL17).

MATCH RECAP: Antonio Carlos Scores First of the Year as City Draws Inter Miami on Wednesday

Lions return to action on Saturday in Cincinnati

ORLANDO, Fla.  – Orlando City SC (8-4-5, 29 points) split the points with Inter Miami CF (3-8-4, 13 points) on Wednesday night at Exploria Stadium, with the two sides battling to a 1-1 draw on the night.

Antonio Carlos accounted for the lone finish for City in the match, his first of the season and the second in his MLS career. Nani tallied the assist on the goal, his 24th as a Lion to extend his Club-record that he broke a week ago.

Ahead of the match, the Lions honored forward Daryl Dike as the USMNT front man returned to The City Beautiful after lifting the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup trophy following a 1-0 victory for the Stars & Stripes over Mexico on Sunday. Chairman Mark Wilf and Vice Chair Lenny Wilf presented Dike with a jersey at midfield prior to kickoff.

Head Coach Oscar Pareja:

“I think it was a difficult game for both [sides]. Very [choppy], rocky, it didn’t flow for either team. From the beginning, we couldn’t find a rhythm. Miami didn’t create many chances, but we didn’t have that volume in the attack that we’re used to having either. It was a game that I think both teams showed that they were coming in with a short period of recovery, trying to find those answers during the game through the players with their effort. We take the point today. We respect Miami. We obviously came to win the derby with that energy, but today we have to walk with that point and we will do that and prepare for the next one.”

Scoring Recap:

45+1’ Antonio Carlos (Nani) – ORL 1, MIA 0

City took the lead just before the halftime break off a corner, with Mauricio Pereyra playing the short pass to Nani on the left flank. The Lions’ captain then whipped in a cross, finding the head of Antonio Carlos for the defender’s first goal of the year.

66’ Kieran Gibbs (Victor Ulloa, Rodolfo Pizarro) – ORL 1, MIA 1

The visitors leveled with Rodolfo Pizarro finding Victor Ulloa on the right flank, who lofted a cross into the area, finding the head of Kieran Gibbs for the equalizer.

Match Notes:

City remains unbeaten against its neighbors to the south on the year, with both a win and a draw through two matchups against Inter Miami in 2021.

Antonio Carlos netted his first goal of the season in the match. The Brazilian center back now has a pair of finishes in his MLS career.

Nani tallied his sixth assist of the season on the night, extending his Club-record with his 24th as a Lion. The match also served as his 70th appearance for the Club in all competitions.

Mason Stajduhar recorded his second-consecutive result between the sticks for the side after earning the win in his MLS debut on Friday against Atlanta.

City looked to have taken the lead in the 81st minute off a finish from Tesho Akindele, but the goal was ruled offside upon Video Review.

Head Coach Oscar Pareja made one change from his starting lineup following Friday’s match against Atlanta United, with Júnior Urso making his first start since July 17 at Toronto.

Next Match: The Lions face a quick turnaround, heading out on the road to take on FC Cincinnati in their first visit to TQL Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 7.

Match Recap: Molino, Zelarayan score, but late push comes up short vs. D.C. United

0

Kevin Molino scored his first goal with the Black & Gold while Lucas Zelarayan hammered home a rebound from Molino to bring the Columbus Crew back within one midway through the second half, but D.C. United secured their bag late with an insurance tally and pulled out a 4-2 road victory at Lower.com Field on Wednesday evening.

D.C. United was led by a pair of braces on the night, as Yordy Reyna scored his first career MLS brace — and his first goals of any sort for his current club. Ola Kamara also added a brace of his own to bring his team-leading total to 10 goals and add his name to an increasingly crowded race for the MLS Golden Boot.

Reyna assisted Kamara’s first goal in his 12th appearance for D.C. since he was acquired from Vancouver in a trade last season.

Kamara’s second came from the penalty spot as a result of the relentless pressure D.C. applied to Columbus throughout the first half before eventually running their modest unbeaten run to four matches.

Kevin Molino and Lucas Zelarayan scored second-half goals for Columbus, which has now conceded four goals in back-to-back games after letting in eight in their previous 10 matches. Molino earned Nationwide Man of the Match honors following his milestone tally.

Zelarayan’s sixth goal of the season briefly cut the deficit to a single goal, before Reyna answered with an exceptional curling finish inside the left post after cutting inside from the right flank.

The Crew returns to Lower.com Field on Saturday, August 7 against Atlanta United for a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff.

Quakes extend unbeaten streak to six, Chofis scores fourth MLS goal

PORTLAND, Ore. – The San Jose Earthquakes earned a 1-1 draw against the Portland Timbers on Wednesday night at Providence Park. The draw sees the Quakes extend their unbeaten streak to six, the second longest active streak in MLS, with five of those matches being played on the road. San Jose has now earned at least one point in five straight road matches for the first time since 2012, while scoring first in each of them.

San Jose opened the scoring in the 24th minute. Cristian Espinoza sent a cross from the right wing, which goalkeeper Steve Clark intercepted but couldn’t contain, falling to Chofis for a tap-in.

Portland then found the equalizer just moments before halftime. Yimmi Chara centered a corner kick which was headed by Bill Tuiloma and found Felipe Mora at the back post for the close-range finish.

The chippy match saw nine cards handed out, including eight after the 85th minute. Timbers midfielder Diego Chara received two yellow cards in a two-minute span in second-half stoppage time, forcing Portland to play out the final few minutes with 10 men.

The Earthquakes will now return to San Jose to host LAFC on Saturday, Aug 8, presented by Unilever. The match kicks off from PayPal Park at 4:00 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Bay Area, KNBR 1050 and 1370 KZSF.

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES HEAD COACH MATIAS ALMEYDA

On the point earned against the Portland Timbers:

“I want to thank the players for the devotion that they had. We’ve changed quite a bit and we have improved a lot. I think the tie occurred when time was up in the first half. That’s not a justification. We played a great game against a great opponent at a place where it is not easy to play. We are showing that character that we have always looked for. Like this, the team is very competitive.”

On the buildup to the goal:

“It makes me very happy for the players and for the whole team. Our intention is for everyone to run and play. That goal reflects our intentions. We want every player at San Jose to identify with the style. Those goals are always a prize. I think we’ve had similar instances in which we controlled the match but were just missing the finish that could have potentially won us the match tonight.”

On facing LAFC on Sunday:

“Every opponent we face is challenging. In fact, the teams that we are up against are the teams that are above us. LAFC is a team that has defeated us many times. We can’t look at what they have been doing, we have to see what we can do against them.”

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES MIDFIELDER JACKSON YUEILL

On the instructions he received from Matias Almeyda before entering the match and overall impression of the result:

“It’s been a while. It’s nice to be back with the team and with the group and it’s nice to be playing again with everyone. When I came in, [Matias] told me to do what I normally do, get comfortable again, get familiar with the team again and try to bring some energy and calmness to the game. Just go out there and play and get reacquainted with everyone. It’s fun to be back with everyone and I think the tie on the road is a good point.”

On his experience at the Concacaf Gold Cup and keeping up with them while he was away:

“The experience was unbelievable, especially winning. It was so cool to be with that group. We came off the Nations League win, which was really special and this one is just as special or more because of the way we did it and the length of the tournament and how cool and how much it meant to everyone going there. I had a lot of great memories from the camp, a lot of good experiences. I’m happy to come away with a trophy at the end. Watching and supporting from afar was difficult because I obviously wanted to be with the team and with the guys, but they did fantastic. They had a couple of hard road games in which they fought really well and showed a lot of bravery and heart. I think that’s important. The team is getting stronger, and you can see that from afar. Being here today, you can see the fight and desire to get back up in the standings is there and it’s really impressive to see from the team.”

LAFC suffers 4-1 Home Loss to Sporting Kansas City

0

The Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) saw its five-game home unbeaten streak come to an end with a 4-1 loss to Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday night at Banc of California Stadium. Danny Musovski scored the only goal of the game for LAFC, who fell at home for the first time since May 29. LAFC remains in fifth place in the Western Conference with a 6-6-5 record for 23 points on the season.

Each team had chances in the game’s opening minutes, but it was Sporting who took the lead in the 20th minute. LAFC goalkeeper Tomas Romero collided with a Kansas City player at the edge of the penalty area, and the ball fell to Alan Pulido, who passed it into the net to make the score 1-0 for Sporting Kansas City.

The visitors doubled their lead eight minutes later when Luis Martins volleyed home a Daniel Salloi pass, making the score 2-0.

Salloi scored with a volley of his own in the 36th minute, finishing a pass from Graham Zusi to send his team into the halftime break with a 3-0 advantage.

The score was 4-0 just before the hour mark when a Zusi cross was headed past Romero by Gadi Kinda.

Musovski pulled a goal back for LAFC in the 82nd minute when he raced onto a Diego Palacios through ball and slotted a low shot past Sporting goalkeeper Tim Melia for his first goal of the season, making the score 4-1.

LAFC returns to action on Sunday, August 8 when it travels north to take on the San Jose Earhquakes at PayPal Park. That game kicks off at 4 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live locally on My 13 KCOP and Estrella TV.

Sounders FC and FC Dallas battle to 1-1 draw at Lumen Field

0

Fredy Montero nets club-best 64th career goal for Rave Green, but Franco Jara scores in second-half stoppage time to grab Dallas a share of the points; Seattle takes a breather over the weekend, as Liga MX side Tigres comes into Lumen Field on Tuesday, August 10 for Leagues Cup clash (7:00 p.m. PT / ESPN2, TUDN, El Rey 1360 AM)

SEATTLE, WASH. – Fredy Montero bagged his 64th career goal in all competitions for Seattle Sounders FC (9-3-6, 33 points), but Franco Jara equalized in second-half stoppage time for FC Dallas (4-7-6, 18 points) in midweek action at Lumen Field. With Sounders FC’s draw and Sporting Kansas City’s win tonight at Los Angeles FC, Seattle and Sporting are level atop the Western Conference with 33 points each. Sporting holds the total wins tiebreaker (10 victories to Seattle’s nine).

Sounders FC took the lead in the 72nd minute via a free kick from João Paulo that found the head of Fredy Montero. The Colombian recorded his fourth goal of the season and his 51st all-time strike in regular-season play. For Montero, he continues to add to his club-leading total, scoring 64 goals in all competitions for the Rave Green, more than any other MLS Sounder in the club’s history.

However, the Hoops equalized at the death when Nkosi Tafari sent a ball into the area that rattled around at the top of Seattle’s six-yard-box, eventually finding the foot of Franco Jara, who was able to tap it in from point-blank range in the 91st minute.

Seattle now takes a rare weekend off from league play, as the club prepares to host Liga MX powerhouse Tigres on Tuesday, August 10 at Lumen Field (7:00 p.m. PT / ESPN2, TUDN, El Rey 1360 AM). The Rave Green are competing in Leagues Cup – the official annual single-elimination tournament featuring clubs from MLS and Liga MX, Mexico’s topflight league – for the first time, with a 4-8-2 all-time record against Liga MX clubs, all coming in Concacaf Champions League play.

MATCH NOTES

Following tonight’s result, Seattle moves to 33 points on the season. With Sounders FC’s draw and Sporting Kansas City’s win tonight at Los Angeles FC, Seattle and Sporting are level atop the Western Conference with 33 points each. Sporting holds the total wins tiebreaker (10 victories to Seattle’s nine). Sporting also has one match in-hand on the Rave Green.

Fredy Montero bagged his fourth goal of 2021 on Wednesday night, good for second on the club’s roster in scoring behind Raúl Ruidíaz (11 goals). Montero now has 51 regular-season goals for Sounders FC, and 64 total strikes in all competitions for the Rave Green, more than any player in team history.

Montero’s goal in the 72nd minute of play was his fifth against Dallas in his career, tied for the all-time Sounders FC lead in scoring against the Hoops (Lamar Neagle also has five goals).

With a free-kick assist on Montero’s goal, João Paulo earned his sixth assist of 2021. The Brazilian playmaker is now tied for third in MLS in overall assists.

In MLS regular-season play, Sounders FC moves to 12-7-8 all-time against FC Dallas, including a 9-1-3 mark at home (Seattle has outscored Dallas 30-9 in those matches at Lumen Field). The two sides are also familiar postseason opponents, meeting eight times dating back to 2014. Sounders FC is 4-2-2 all-time against Dallas in those contests.

Cristian Roldan made his return to Sounders FC’s starting lineup for the first time since July 4, having helped the United States Men’s National Team hoist the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup on Sunday over Mexico. Along with his brother Alex, Roldan was named to the 2021 MLS All-Star Team this morning, with the best of Major League Soccer facing off against the best of Liga MX on August 25 at Banc of California Stadium. Alex Roldan made his international debut for El Salvador this summer, appearing in all four of his nation’s Gold Cup matches, scoring one goal.

In addition to the Roldan brothers, four other Sounders were named to the MLS All-Star squad this morning. Raúl Ruidíaz, João Paulo, Yeimar Gómez Andrade and Nouhou joined Alex Roldan and Cristian Roldan on the 28-man roster that will face the Liga MX All-Stars at Bank of California Stadium. This marks the first MLS All-Star appearance for each of the six Seattle players, who were all selected via the fan, player and media vote. Notably, the simultaneous All-Star Game selection of both Alex and Cristian Roldan marks the first time a pair of brothers have been named to an MLS All-Star Game in the same year.

Club captain Nicolás Lodeiro made his first matchday 18-man roster since May 2 versus the LA Galaxy, coming on as a substitute for Kelyn Rowe in the 87th minute of play. The Uruguayan playmaker has been out due to right knee surgery and is now available for selection by Head Coach Brian Schmetzer. A mainstay for the Rave Green, the appearance marked just the second time since Lodeiro joined the club in mid-2016 that he has not started (123 regular-season contests).
