Charette (6’1′, 190 lbs.) will be in his sixth CFL campaign. After two years in the city, the St. Catharines, Ontario native played for the Toronto Argonauts from 2017 to 2019, winning the Grey Cup in his first year with them. In 64 career games, the former Guelph University Gryphons earned 218 yards on 26 receptions.

Defenseman has played 247 career AHL games

RALEIGH, N.C. – Don Waddell, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has signed defenseman Josh Jacobs to a one-year, two-way contract. The deal will pay Jacobs $750,000 at the NHL level and $75,000 at the American Hockey League (AHL) level with a $100,000 guarantee.

“Josh is a steady, reliable defenseman,” said Waddell. “This signing helps improve our organizational depth on defense.”

Jacobs, 25, tallied three assists in 19 AHL games with the Binghamton Devils in 2020-21. The 6’2″, 211-pound defenseman has registered 56 points (9g, 47a) in 247 career AHL games with Albany and Binghamton. Jacobs made his NHL debut with New Jersey in 2019, and he has skated in three career NHL games. Prior to turning professional, Jacobs recorded 24 points (4g, 20a) in 67 games with the Sarnia Sting of the Ontario Hockey League in 2015-16 while serving as an alternate captain. The Shelby Township, Mich., native also spent one year at Michigan State, where he posted nine assists in 35 games during the 2014-15 season. Jacobs also earned 38 points (7g, 31a) in 104 USHL games with the Indiana Ice from 2012-14. He was selected to the USHL All-Star Game in 2013-14 and posted five points (3g, 2a) in 12 playoff games as the Ice captured the 2014 Clark Cup. Jacobs was selected in the second round, 41st overall, of the 2014 NHL Draft by New Jersey.

Sharks agree t a Two-Year contract with Goaltender Adin Hill

0

SAN JOSE, CA – San Jose Sharks (@SanJoseSharks) General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club and goaltender Adin Hill (@Adin_Hill) have avoided arbitration by agreeing to a two-year contract. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“We’re pleased to get Adin under contract solidifying our goaltending position for the coming season,” said Wilson.

Hill was acquired by San Jose on July 17 along with a 2022 seventh-round selection from the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for goaltender Josef Korenar and San Jose’s 2022 second-round selection.

Hill, 25, appeared in 19 games last season for Arizona, earning a 9-9-1 record with a .913 save percentage (SV%) and 2.74 goals-against average (GAA) along with two shutouts. Hill co-led Arizona goaltenders in shutouts and led in save percentage and set a career high in games played and games started (17). In the American Hockey League (AHL), he has played in 138 AHL games with the Springfield Falcons and Tucson Roadrunners, earning a 67-50-16 record with a 2.69 GAA, .909 SV% and 10 shutouts. He has played in nine Calder Cup Playoff games, all in 2018 with Tucson, recording a 4-5 record and a 2.12 GAA and .922 SV%.

Internationally, he represented Team Canada at the 2021 World Championships, where he won a Gold Medal, appearing in three games and earning a 1-1-0 record with a 1.73 GAA and .909 SV%.

Prior to his NHL career, Hill spent three seasons with the Western Hockey League’s Portland Winterhawks where he played in 115 games, recording a 67-38-7 record with a 2.86 GAA, .919 SV% and five shutouts. He led all goaltenders in save percentage in the 2014-15 season (.921). In the 2015 postseason, he helped Portland reach the Conference Finals and appeared in 17 games and recorded a 10-6-1 record, a 2.96 GAA, .911 SV% and one shutout. He ranked third among goaltenders in postseason wins, was ninth in save percentage, and led rookie goalies in playoff wins.

The six-foot-six, 203-pound native of Comox, British Columbia, was originally selected by Arizona in the 2015 NHL Draft (third round, 76th overall).

NEED TO KNOW:

Dynamo close two-game road trip in Minnesota after Wednesday’s game in Austin

Houston MF Adalberto Carrasquilla will be available pending P-1 visa

Dynamo return to BBVA Stadium on Aug. 14 to host Colorado Rapids

HOUSTON – Houston Dynamo FC close a two-game road trip on Saturday when they travel to Allianz Field for the first of three games against Minnesota United this season. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT and fans can watch the match live on QuestTexas ch. 55 in English and TeleXitos ch. 47.2 in Spanish.

The Dynamo look to split the two-game road trip after falling 3-2 to Austin FC on Wednesday. Tyler Pasher earned his first start since returning from international duty on July 31. Pasher scored in the 27th minute to bring the Dynamo level at 1-1. Pasher’s goal was his fourth of the season, but the Canadian international left the game minutes later due to a lower leg injury and is listed as questionable for Saturday’s match.

Corey Baird also earned his first start with the team since joining the club on July 30. Fafa Picault scored his third goal of the season and brought Houston within one goal of earning a point against Austin. Picault is the first Dynamo player to score against both in-state rivals in the same season. The Dynamo forward also scored against FC Dallas on May 8 in Frisco.

Houston took the season series in 2020 with a 1-0-2 record against the Loons. The Dynamo won the first meeting 3-0 at BBVA Stadium and the next two games finished as 2-2 draws. Saturday is the first of two road trips to Minnesota this season and the Loons visit BBVA Stadium on Aug. 28.

The Dynamo return to BBVA Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 14 to host the Colorado Rapids at 7:30 p.m. CT.

Here are three key points ahead of Saturday’s game:

  1. DYNAMO BEGIN SECOND HALF AWAY FROM HOME: The Dynamo begin the second half of the season on the road and look to split a two-game road trip after Wednesday’s loss in Austin. Houston enters the game three points shy from the final playoff spot at this stretch of the season. Houston will look to capitalize on a heavier stretch of games at BBVA Stadium with 10 of the final 17 games in EaDo. The Dynamo will host three of their next four games at home beginning with the match against Colorado on Aug. 14.
  2. DYNAMO ADD MIDFIELD DEPTH: The Dynamo recently announced the acquisition of Adalberto Carrasquilla on loan from Cartagena FC in Spain. The midfielder will be eligible to play on Saturday pending receipt of his P-1 visa. Carrasquilla joins Houston after two seasons in LaLiga 2 with FC Cartagena making 49 appearances for the club. Carrasquilla joined Cartagena in 2019 and led the club to a promotion to LaLiga 2 following a 4-3 penalty kick shootout victory over Atletico Baleares on July 19, 2020.

3.      MINNESOTA REBOUND AFTER SLOW START: Minnesota opened the season winless in their first four games and now enter Saturday’s game with 23 points and sixth in the Western Conference. The Loons have only lost once at home this season and after their 2-2 draw with Vancouver on Saturday they are unbeaten in their last four games. The Dynamo backline will be tasked with containing a midfield that features Robin Lod and Emanuel Reynoso, the duo combines for seven goals and nine assists. Defensively, Dayne St. Clair returns from international duty with Canada at the Concacaf Gold Cup.

CFL Preview: Elks host RedBlacks in Week 1 Finale

0

EDMONTON — Opening weekend of the 2021 CFL season will close out with the Edmonton Elks hosting the Ottawa REDBLACKS in a game that will feature new looks for both sidelines.

While the new uniforms for each of these teams do look fantastic, it is the coaching staffs that are being referred to. The Elks and the REDBLACKS each have new head coaches leading their benches for 2021.

The Elks sideline will feature Jaime Elizondo making his CFL head coaching debut. Elizondo spent two seasons in the nation’s capital as the offensive coordinator of the REDBLACKS from 2016-2018.

Elizondo’s arrival in Edmonton reunites him with offensive weapons Trevor Harris and Greg Ellingson, who have quickly become one of the most threatening passing combinations in the CFL.

Since 2016 Harris has completed 279 passes to Ellingson, accounting for 3,913 yards and 20 touchdowns, making them the top ranked quarterback-wide receiver duo in the league over the last four seasons.

The off-season additions of Derel Walker and Armanti Edwards only make the Green and Gold passing attack more dangerous. With Walker and Edwards joining Ellingson in Edmonton, this gives the Elks three receivers who totaled over 1,000 yards in 2019.

With a collection of wide receiver talent such as the Elks have, many might be expecting a fast start on Saturday. Elizondo on the other hand, wants his team to focus on control.

“It’s about solving problems as you go through the game and making adjustments,” Elizondo told members of the media. “Everybody wants to start fast, but I think for us you have to focus one play at a time.”

Should the Elks offence start too slow or give up an early turnover, their defence will certainly be there to help them out.

Edmonton’s defensive unit was one of the best in the league the last time we saw them on the field. They forced a league leading 102 two and outs in 2019, and were amongst one of the toughest teams to move the ball on, surrendering an average of just 289 yards per game.

On the backend of their defence, the Edmonton secondary is full of playmakers and have been among the hardest teams to throw against, giving up an average of just 222 passing yards per game.

For veteran defensive back Aaron Grymes, the key to success for the Edmonton secondary has been selflessness.

“We’re selfless, I don’t care who makes the play as long as it gets made,” said Grymes. “That selfless attitude, I think is going to go a long way for us this season.”

The off-season acquisition of Jonathan Rose provides veteran leadership and instinctive ball-hawking ability for the Elks defensive backfield. In four seasons Rose has nine interceptions, two of which he was able to convert for touchdowns.

After a scary neck injury sidelined Rose in 2019, Saturday will mark his first game in 25 months. To add fuel to an already sizeable fire, in his return to the field, Rose will be matching up against his former team.

“From the first quarter to the fourth quarter, until the fourth quarter strikes zero, anything goes,” said Rose. “If I look at those guys as friends or allies, then I might not play my best game, so once that whistle blows to kickoff, I don’t know those guys.”

While the Edmonton Elks look to be a tough task for any team to handle, the Ottawa REDBLACKS may have the perfect solution.

On Saturday, Ottawa fans will finally see the long-awaited debut of their new head coach, Paul LaPolice, whose offensive creativity helped the Winnipeg Blue Bombers capture the Grey Cup in 2019.

Joining LaPolice in Ottawa will be his long-time quarterback, Matt Nichols. With LaPolice as his offensive coordinator, Nichols has amassed 13,220 passing yards and 79 touchdowns.

The combination of Nichols and LaPolice provides optimism for downfield passing efficiency and red zone scoring. Nichols was one of the most effective quarterbacks inside the 20 last season, hitting on 22 of his 27 passing attempts while throwing eight touchdowns.

“Matt is a competitor’s competitor,” said Elks defensive back Aaron Grymes. “He competes, he plays with a chip on his shoulder and that’s what I think makes him so special.”

However, Nichols will be without two of the REDBLACKS’ top receiving options from the 2019 season. Dominique Rhymes found himself with the BC Lions in the off-season, while Ottawa legend, Brad Sinopoli announced his retirement prior to the start of the season.

Together Sinopoli and Rhymes accounted for 1,727 passing yards and eight touchdowns for the REDBLACKS. While these are big pieces to lose, Ottawa still has solid talent at the receiver position. Third year receiver RJ Harris looks more than ready to take over the number one spot for Ottawa.

In his first two seasons, Harris totaled 1,471 yards and four receiving touchdowns.

With the departure of Sinopoli and Rhymes, Harris will certainly be given the opportunity to be a major contributor in the Ottawa passing attack.

Electricity is in the air in Edmonton, as football finally returns to Commonwealth Stadium. Fans will be energized and there will be a lot of excitement at on Saturday night. However, both teams are determined not to get ahead of themselves, and they will be keeping the focus on taking the game one play at a time.

Kickoff is slated for 10:00 p.m. ET on TSN and ESPN2 or can be followed along on CFL.ca’s Game Tracker.
