MATCH RECAP: Second-Half Ruidíaz Strike Propels Sounders FC in 1-0 Road Win Over Dallas

0

With 63rd-minute goal, Raúl Ruidíaz ties Clint Dempsey for second all-time in club scoring as Rave Green jump back atop the Western Conference; Seattle concludes three-match road swing with MLS Cup rematch on network FOX at Columbus on Saturday, August 21 (2:30 p.m. PT / FOX, 950 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM)

FRISCO, TEXAS – Playing each other for the second time this month, Seattle Sounders FC (11-3-6, 39 points) earned three road points with a 1-0 win over FC Dallas (5-9-6, 21 points) on Wednesday evening at Toyota Stadium. Raúl Ruidíaz scored his league-leading 14th goal of the season as the Rave Green earned their first regular-season win at Dallas since April 12, 2014. Seattle’s win – combined with Sporting Kansas City’s 1-1 draw with Portland this evening – moves Brian Schmetzer’s side back atop the Western Conference standings, one point ahead of SKC.

After coming on as a substitute in the 63rd minute, Ruidíaz scored the game’s lone goal less than 30 seconds after entering the pitch. Nicolás Lodeiro – also a 63rd-minute sub – fed Ruidíaz in a dangerous position inside the area, where the Peruvian’s first attempt was blocked by a Dallas defender. After the ball bounced back to his feet, Ruidíaz chipped a shot into the top corner, hitting both the crossbar and post before bouncing into the goal. With four goals in his last three games, Ruidíaz has now tied Clint Dempsey for second all-time in club history with 57 goals across all competitions. Fredy Montero is the club’s all-time record holder with 67.

After away matches in Portland and Dallas over the past four days, Seattle concludes its three-game road swing in Columbus on Saturday, August 21 against the Crew. A rematch of the 2020 MLS Cup, the contest is being carried nationally on network FOX, and regionally via Sports Radio 950 KJR AM and El Rey 1360 AM. Following that contest, Los Angeles hosts the 2021 MLS All-Star Game against the best of Liga MX. Sounders FC saw a club-record six All-Stars selected this season.

MATCH NOTES

Sounders FC’s win in North Texas tonight – combined with Sporting Kansas City’s home draw versus Portland – sees the Rave Green move back atop the MLS Western Conference. Seattle now sits in first in the West again on 39 points, with Sporting trailing by one point.

Raúl Ruidíaz’s substitute goal in the 63rd minute came just moments after the Peruvian subbed into the match for Will Bruin. It was Ruidíaz’s 14th goal in 20 regular-season appearances in 2021, and he continues to lead the MLS Golden Boot race by two tallies.

Ruidíaz continues to pace his club in scoring, and he now sits on 57 total goals in all competitions since joining the club midway through the 2018 season. Tonight’s tally ties him with former forward Clint Dempsey. Only teammate Fredy Montero has more goals in Rave Green, with the Colombian sitting on 67 total strikes.

In MLS regular-season play, Sounders FC moves to 13-7-8 all-time against FC Dallas. Seattle is now 4-6-5 in North Texas dating back to 2009. The two sides are also familiar postseason opponents, meeting eight times dating back to 2014. Sounders FC is 4-2-2 all time against Dallas in those contests.

In 2021, Sounders FC is now 6-1-2 away from the Emerald City, good for 20 points. Only New England (21 points) has more road points in MLS this season.

Sounders FC Head Coach Brian Schmetzer made seven changes to his starting lineup from the squad that defeated Portland 6-2 on Sunday. Fresh into the starting group were goalkeeper Spencer Richey, defenders AB Cissoko and Jimmy Medranda, midfielders Danny Leyva, Josh Atencio and Nicolas Benezet, in addition to forward Will Bruin.

Newly acquired midfielder Nicolas Benezet made his first start in Rave Green after making his club debut as a late substitute in Portland on Sunday, where the Frenchman scored the sixth and final goal of the night. Seattle acquired Benezet via trade at the summer transfer deadline from the Colorado Rapids in exchange for $50,000 of General Allocation Money (GAM), and potentially another $50,000 of conditional GAM. He played 63 minutes tonight at Toyota Stadium, ultimately making way for Nicolás Lodeiro.

Spencer Richey got the nod in goal for the second time in 2021 tonight. He played his first minutes for the Rave Green on July 22, a 1-0 win at Austin FC. A Seattle native and a graduate of the University of Washington, Richey joined the club from FC Cincinnati this past offseason.

Following the club’s third and final road match of the week on Sunday in Columbus, six Sounders are heading to the MLS All-Star Game in Los Angeles. Raúl Ruidíaz, João Paulo, Yeimar Gómez Andrade, Nouhou, Alex Roldan and Cristian Roldan were among the 28-man roster that will face the Liga MX All-Stars at Bank of California Stadium. This marks the first MLS All-Star appearance for each of the six Seattle players, who were all selected via the fan, player and media vote. Notably, the simultaneous All-Star Game selection of Alex and Cristian Roldan marks the first time a pair of brothers have been named to an MLS All-Star Game in the same year.

Game Recap: Breakthrough – Elks find offense in win at British Columbia

0

VANCOUVER — The Edmonton Elks’ antlers felt a little less heavy on Thursday night, after the team topped the BC Lions 21-16 for their first win of the season.

Trevor Harris threw for 296 yards and Greg Ellingson had 148 receiving yards while James Wilder Jr. added an impressive 127 yards on the ground, helping snap Edmonton’s surprisingly slow start out of the gate this season.

Michael Reilly was 15-25 for 128 yards, as the Lions lost their home opener at BC Place.

The Lions opened things up with a 57-yard kickoff return from Chris Rainey. Reilly immediately looked to the end zone, tossing a 42-yard pass to Lucky Whitehead, wo was just a couple of inches away from sticking six points on the board in the game’s opening moments. The Lions had to settle for a 49-yard field goal from new kicker Jimmy Camacho, who made it a 3-0 game 59 seconds into play. Punter Stefan Flintoft’s 68-yard punt single gave BC a 4-0 lead and from there, the offence went quiet for the Lions.

Edmonton’s defence began to dig in, gradually pouring pressure on Reilly, who had little time to find his targets. Sean Whyte‘s 52-yard field goal made it a one-point game at the seven-minute mark of the first quarter and as the game shifted into the second, Harris and his counterparts began to finally find their stride.

Harris pieced together a seven-play, 108-yard drive that was finished with the QB finding receiver Mike Jones for a 10-yard touchdown. Whyte’s convert gave the Elks their first lead of the night, up 10-4 at 4:21 of the second quarter.

While the Elks’ defence stayed in pursuit of Reilly, getting a pair of sacks in the first half and a safety, Whyte sent a 24-yard chip shot of a field goal home to close out the half, giving Edmonton a 15-4 lead.

The Lions began to generate some momentum in the third quarter. After Whyte connected on his third field goal of the night (a 51-yarder at 3:06), BC managed to get a 36-yard field goal from Camacho to make it an 11-point game again.

Edmonton backup QB Taylor Cornelius lost control of a snap on short yardage that led to a turnover on downs that gave Reilly the ball at Edmonton’s 44-yard line. On the Lions’ quest to the end zone, the game took a chippy turn, with skirmishes spilling past the whistle on multiple plays. After an Edmonton penalty got the Lions to the one-yard line, Reilly squeezed into the end zone on a play that had to be reviewed for confirmation of the score. The Lions missed on the two-point convert, making it an 18-13 game, which is where the score stayed into the fourth quarter.

The Elks opened the quarter with something that hadn’t happened all season. Whyte missed his first field goal of the season, a 42-yarder that drifted right of the uprights. That led to a BC drive that was highlighted by a great 26-yard catch from Lamar Durant. The Lions had to settle for a Camacho 29-yard field goal that turned a five-point deficit into a two-point one, at 18-16 at 4:05.

Whyte had no issues making his fourth field goal of the night, hitting from 38 yards to restore Edmonton’s five-point lead near the midpoint of the game’s final frame.

Nursing that five-point lead in the final minutes of the game, Harris leaned on Wilder and the running back delivered, trucking his way up the field and milking precious seconds off of the clock for his team.

The Elks head to Toronto next week, while the Lions will travel to Ottawa to face the REDBLACKS.

González, 25, was placed on the injured list on August 6 with a right knee inflammation. He made a rehab start for Low-A Rancho Cucamonga on Tuesday, allowing three runs in 0.1 innings of work with one strikeout. He is 3-1 with a 3.82 ERA (14 ER/33.0 IP) and 32 strikeouts in 42 games this season. In his career, he is combined 6-1 with a 2.87 ERA (17 ER/53.1 IP) and 55 strikeouts. He was originally signed as an international free agent on July 2, 2012 out of Tuxpan, Nayarit, Mexico.

White, 25, recorded his first win of the season last night, tossing 7.1 innings of scoreless baseball. He became the first Dodger pitcher to toss 6.0+ innings in a relief appearance pitcher since Pedro Astacio fired 6.1 innings in relief on Sept. 29, 1996 against San Diego and he is the first Dodger reliever to go 7.1 scoreless since Ed Roebuck tossed 9.0 innings on June 24, 1960. On season, he is 1-1 with a 3.06 ERA (12 ER/35.1 IP) and 35 strikeouts in 17 games for the Dodgers. Twins place LHP Lewis Thorpe on 10-day injured list

0

Club selects contracts of Andrew Albers and Kyle Barraclough, options Edgar García

NEW YORK, NY – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have placed left-handed pitcher Lewis Thorpe on the 10-day Injured List with left shoulder impingement.

Thorpe, who was recalled prior to yesterday’s game vs. Cleveland, left his start against the Indians in the second inning after experiencing pain in his left shoulder. The 25-year-old has appeared in four games (3 starts) for the Twins on the season, going 0-2 with a 4.70 ERA (15.1 IP, 8 ER), seven walks, six strikeouts and a .237 (14-for-59) opponent batting average.

García, who was claimed off waivers by the Twins on July 30, appeared in four games for the Twins, allowing four runs on three hits in 7.0 innings pitched with four walks and six strikeouts, holding opponents to a .120 (3-for-25) batting average.

To replace Thorpe and García on the 26-man roster, the Twins have selected the contracts of left-handed pitcher Andrew Albers and right-handed pitcher Kyle Barraclough from Triple-A St. Paul.

Albers, 35, appeared in 16 games (15 starts) for the Saints this season, going 6-4 with a 3.86 ERA (91.0 IP, 39 ER), nine walks, 78 strikeouts and a 1.30 WHIP. A native of North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Albers will be making his third career stint with the Twins after pitching for Minnesota in 2013 and 2016. In parts of four major league seasons with the Twins, Toronto Blue Jays and Seattle Mariners, he has gone 7-6 with a 4.10 ERA (120.2 IP, 55 ER), one save, one complete game, 25 walks and 79 strikeouts in 26 career games (18 starts). He made his major league debut with the Twins on August 6, 2013 and began his major league career with a 17.1-inning scoreless streak, the longest to begin a career by a Twins starter.

Barraclough, 31, signed with the Twins as a minor league free agent on June 20 and has appeared in 18 games for the Saints this season, going 3-1 with a 2.86 ERA (22.0 IP, 7 ER), 10 walks and 31 strikeouts. The Santa Clara, California native has made 270 career major league appearances with Miami, Washington and San Francisco, going 16-14 with 11 saves, a 3.53 ERA (252.1 IP, 99 ER), 155 walks and 319 strikeouts. He spent 2021 spring training with New York-AL and appeared in 11 games for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre before signing with Minnesota.

Additionally, to make room on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Beau Burrows has cleared waivers and outrighted to Triple-A St. Paul.
