TORONTO – The Toronto Argonauts and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are set to compete in the 109th Grey Cup. This marks the seventh time in the history of Canadian Football that the modern-day incarnations of the two clubs have played for the iconic trophy after having met in 1937-38, 1945-47 and 1950.

  • The Winnipeg Blue Bombers own a 12-14 (.462) record in the Grey Cup. The team will be looking for its third consecutive championship, following two victories over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
  • The Toronto Argonauts are 17-6 (.739) in the Grey Cup. They last appeared in the championship in 2017, winning 27-24 over Calgary.

He also dressed in the 98th Grey Cup with Saskatchewan in 2010. Dinwiddie won a Grey Cup as a Quarterbacks Coach with the Calgary Stampeders in 2018.
  • Saskatchewan has hosted the Grey Cup on three occasions since 1995:
    • In 1995, Baltimore defeated Calgary 37-20
    • In 2003, Edmonton defeated Montreal 34-22

  • This will be the first Grey Cup at new Mosaic Stadium.

The 109th Grey Cup will be played at Mosaic Stadium in Saskatchewan on Sunday, November 20 with kickoff slated for 5 p.m. local/6 p.m. ET. The sold-out contest and the Twisted Tea Grey Cup Halftime Show, featuring Jordan Davis, Tyler Hubbard of Florida Georgia Line and Canadian Josh Ross, will be broadcast live across the nation on TSN and RDS – Canada’s home of the CFL. WINNIPEG, MB., –The Canadian Football League unveiled its 202s All-Star Team today, with six members of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers named to the squad.

Honoured as CFL All-Stars are quarterback Zach Collaros, receiver Dalton Schoen, left tackle Stanley Bryant, guard Pat Neufeld, defensive back Deatrick Nichols and kick returner Janarion Grant.

The CFL All-Star Team was selected by 47 members of the Football Reporters of Canada, the league’s head coaches as well as submissions through the All-Star Fan Vote.

Zach Collaros has been named a CFL all-star for the second consecutive season. The reigning CFL Most Outstanding Player – and a finalist for the award again this year – helped lead the club to a franchise-record 15 wins and in the process set career highs in passing yards (4,183) and touchdowns (37). The 37 passing TDs is second-most in Blue Bombers history to the 46 Khari Jones threw for in 2002 and the highest total in the CFL since Henry Burris threw for 43 scores in 2012.

His touchdown-interception-differential of 37:13 – or +24 – is tied for the ninth highest in CFL history (Montreal’s Anthony Cavillio was +30 in 2008) and a new Blue Bombers record, eclipsing the +23 ratio Jack Jacobs posted in 1951.

The Blue Bombers have a 33-4 record in games Collaros has started since his arrival at the trade deadline in 2019, including a 6-0 record in postseason games and the last two Grey Cups.

Dalton Schoen, who is a finalist for the Most Outstanding Rookie Award, led the CFL in receiving yardage in his first season with 1,441 yards on 70 receptions. He also tied for the league lead with 16 touchdowns – a Blue Bombers franchise record for first-year players.
Schoen also led the CFL in second-down conversion catches, with a remarkable 41 of his 70 catches keeping the offence on the field. He has also had five 100-yard receiving games this season.

His 1,441 receiving yards was the most by a Blue Bomber since Milt Stegall had 1,896 yards in 2002, the year he was the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player. It also ranks as the seventh-highest total in Blue Bombers history with only Stegall (1,896 in ’02; 1,616 in ’97 and 1,499 in ‘00), James Murphy (1,746 in ’86), Gerald Wilcox (1,624 in ’94) and Eugene Goodlow (1,494 in ’81) having registered more.

Stanley Bryant, the three -time CFL Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman and a finalist again for the award this season, has earned his seventh divisional all-star award after also being selected in 2013-14 and 2017-19 and 2021.

The 36-year-old vet continues to anchor the left side of the offensive line as part of an offence that ranked second in points, sacks surrendered and rushing yards and first in touchdowns.

Pat Neufeld has earned his second consecutive berth on the CFL All-Star in his 11th CFL season, the last eight with the Blue Bombers. The veteran guard was part of an offensive line that – in addition to surrendering the second-fewest sacks and finishing second in scoring – also helped Brady Oliveira rush for 1,000 yards for the first time in his career.

Deatrick Nichols has quickly established himself as one of the CFL’s best shut-down defensive backs and has earned a spot on the league all-star team for the second time in his first two seasons. Nichols had 46 tackles, one interception and eight pass knockdowns, which tied for fifth-most in the CFL.

Janarion Grant was the Blue Bombers Most Outstanding Special Teams Player this season in a year in which he made history by becoming the franchise’s all-time leader in return touchdowns.

Grant had three kick-return scores this year – two on punt returns, a third on a kickoff – to give him seven in his career and allowing him to move past Keith Stokes. Grant added another score in the Western Final, taking a punt 92 yards for a TD in Winnipeg’s 28-20 win over the B.C. Lions.

Grant finished second in the CFL in punt return yards at 817 – ranking first overall with a 13.0-yard average – third in kickoff return yards at 782 and with his rushing and receiving contributions on offence ranks fifth in the league in combined yardage at 1,817.

In a six-round featured bout, undefeated David Stevens will fight Christopher Brooker in a six-round super middleweight bout.

Stevens of Reading, PA is 11-0 with eight knockouts. The 22 year-old Stevens is coming off a second round stoppage over Loris Barberio on July 23rd in Dallas, Texas.

Brooker of Philadelphia is 16-12 with six knockouts. The 31 year-old Brooker is a seven year professional who has shown a willingness to fight anyone, anywhere, anytime. Brooker has wins over Leo Hall (8-0), John Magda (11-0), Antowyan Aikens (10-1-1), Gabriel Pham (6-0), former world title challenger Elvin Ayala (28-7-1) and Lanell Bellows (18-2-2). Brooker is coming off a loss to Demond Nicholson on August 6th in Hanover, Maryland.

In the co-featured bout, Brendan O’Callaghan (3-1-1, 1 KO) of Philadelphia will fight Boimah Karmo (3-0-1) of Sharon Hill, PA in a four-round super welterweight contest.

Welterweight Mark Dawson Jr. (10-1-1, 4 KOs) of Philadelphia taking on veteran Evencii Dixon (10-30-2, 5 KOs) of Lancaster, PA in a bout scheduled for six-rounds.

Expected to be fully healthy by the start of Spring Training

HOUSTON, TX – Houston Astros catcher Martin Maldonado underwent successful surgery yesterday to repair a sports hernia. He is expected to be fully recovered from the procedure by the start of Spring Training.

In the 2022 postseason, Maldonado appeared in 11 of the Astros 13 games overall (all starts). In 113 regular season games, he reached career highs in home runs (15) and RBI (45). Astros pitchers posted the best ERA in the American League with a 2.90 mark, which is the lowest in franchise history for a full season. Maldonado has been a durable performer as the Astros primary catcher over the last three seasons (2020-22). His 283 games at catcher in that span rank second in the Majors behind J.T. Realmuto (287).

ASTROS SIGN LHP AUSTIN DAVIS TO MINOR LEAGUE CONTRACT

The Astros have signed LHP Austin Davis to a minor league contract with an invitation to Major League Spring Training.

Davis, 29, appeared in 52 Major League games in 2022, splitting his time between the Red Sox (50g) and Twins (2g) organizations. In 2022, he compiled a 2-1 record and a 5.79 ERA (36ER/56IP), while striking out 64 hitters in 56.0 innings. In Major League action, Davis limited left-handed hitters to a .198 (16×81) average and a .554 OPS. A veteran of five Major League seasons, Davis has appeared in 136 games in his career, while pitching for the Phillies (2018-20), Pirates (2020-21), Red Sox (2021-22) and Twins (2022).

2022 SUBWAY ACC FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
MATCHUP SET
Clemson (Atlantic Division) and North Carolina (Coastal Division) will meet in the 2022 Subway ACC Football Championship Game on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 8 p.m. on ABC. For the 12th time in the 18-year history of the event, the ACC title game will be played in Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium, home of the Carolina Panthers.

North Carolina clinched the Coastal Division with a 36-34 win at Wake Forest (Nov. 12), while Clemson clinched the Atlantic Division on Nov. 5. This is the earliest the matchup has been set since 2017 when Miami and Clemson clinched on Nov. 11.

Including shared titles, Clemson has earned nine Atlantic Division titles – 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. Clemson also earned an ACC Championship Berth in a 2020 when the league competed without divisions. Clemson has won 20 ACC titles, including six in a row from 2015-2020.

North Carolina won at least a share of the Coastal Division for the second time. In 2015, the No. 8 Tar Heels earned the Coastal Division title and faced No. 1 Clemson in the championship game, falling 45-37. Carolina has won five ACC titles, but the last came in 1980.

ACC NOTES
The ACC, which plays arguably the most difficult nonconference schedule in the country every season, has the second-most non-conference wins through 11 weeks.

The ACC has nine bowl eligible teams, which ties for the most of any conference.

The ACC Atlantic Division has six teams with a winning record, which is more than any other division in the country.

The ACC has 35 wins against teams with a .500 record-or-better, which ranks second among all Power 5 conferences.

PREVIEWING WEEK 12
Five conference games and four non-conference matchups highlight week 12 of the ACC football schedule.

Bowl eligible teams Duke and Pitt kick off Week 12 in Pittsburgh (Noon, RSN). The Panthers have won 10 of the last 11 meetings, including the last five. Duke’s most recent series win came in 2014 by a 51-48 score in double overtime. Duke and Pitt are each holding conference opponents to just 22.8 points per game. n A pair of non-conference games start at noon, including Louisiana at Florida State (RSN) and Virginia Tech at Liberty (ESPN+). Florida State, which has won three straight, leads the ACC in rushing offense and is second in total offense. The Seminoles have won three straight games by an average of 34 points. FSU is seeking its first eight-win season since 2016.

Following a thrilling come-from-behind win last week at NC State, Boston College travels to South Bend, Indiana, to face No. 20 Notre Dame (2:30 p.m./NBC). The Eagles seek to snap an eight-game losing streak versus the Fighting Irish. Notre Dame won 45-31 two seasons ago in Chestnut Hill. Boston College’s most recent series win came in 2008. BC quarterback Emmett Morehead has thrown for more than 300 yards in each of the last two games.

Miami, which needs a win in one of its final two games to earn bowl eligibility, travels to Clemson Saturday (3:30 p.m./ESPN). Clemson has won the last three meetings between the schools by a combined score of 138-20, including a 42-17 win two seasons ago in Death Valley.

Louisville hosts NC State Saturday at 3:30 p.m. on ACC Network. Louisville had won four of six games versus the Wolfpack since joining the ACC prior to last season’s meeting in Raleigh, but the Wolfpack tightened the series ledger with a 28-13 victory.

Virginia plays its final non-conference game of the season when the Cavaliers host No. 23 Coastal Carolina. Saturday’s game will be the first-ever meeting between the programs and kicks off a three-game series.

Looking to keep its record unbeaten in conference action, North Carolina hosts Georgia Tech Saturday afternoon at 5:30 p.m. on ESPN2. The Yellow Jackets have won three of their last four meetings against the Tar Heels, including last season’s 45-22 victory at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Head coach Mack Brown can win his 100th career game at North Carolina. He won 158 games at Texas. Brown would be the only coach to win 100-plus games at multiple FBS schools.

In the prime time ACC Network game, Syracuse travels to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to face Wake Forest (8 p.m./ACCN). The Demon Deacons have won the last two series meetings, including last season’s 40-37 overtime victory.

FOUR ACC TEAMS IN COACHES POLL; THREE IN AP POLL
Three ACC teams are ranked in the AP Top 25 poll (Nov. 13) – No. 9 Clemson, No. 13 North Carolina and No. 20 Florida State. NC State is the first team out of the poll and Duke is also receiving votes.

In the USA TODAY AFCA coaches poll, Clemson is No. 9, followed by No. 11 North Carolina, No. 20 Florida State and No. 25 NC State.

STREAKS
Clemson’s 39-game home winning streak is the longest in ACC history. The previous was Florida State’s 37-game streak (1992-2001). No current Tigers have lost a home game at Clemson in their careers.

North Carolina’s 6-game road win streak is the second-longest active streak in the nation. Georgia has won 10 straight on the road.

NINE FROM ACC SECURE BOWL ELIGIBILITY
Nine ACC teams – Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Louisville, North Carolina, NC State, Pitt, Syracuse and Wake Forest – have secured bowl eligibility. Miami (5-5) must win one of its next two games to become bowl eligible. Georgia Tech (4-6) must win its next two games to earn a bowl spot. The ACC is tied for the most bowl teams among all conferences entering week 12.

The ACC’s current bowl lineup through 2025 includes the Cheez-It Bowl, Duke’s Mayo Bowl, Wasabi Fenway Bowl, Military Bowl Presented by Peraton, New Era Pinstripe Bowl, San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl, TaxSlayer Gator Bowl and Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl. In addition, the ACC will send a team to the Outback Bowl if the league’s opponent in a non-semifinal Capital One Orange Bowl is from the Big Ten. The league will also send a team to either the Gasparilla Bowl or Birmingham Bowl on an annual basis.

The ACC has earned at least six bowl bids in 22 consecutive seasons. Not including the pandemic-affected 2020 season, the ACC has sent at least 10 teams to a bowl every year since 2016. Since 2013, the ACC is second among all conferences with 91 postseason appearances.

Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week, Davey O’Brean QB of the Week: North Carolina’s Drake Maye completed 31 of 49 passes for 448 yards and three touchdowns lift North Carolina to a 36-34 win over Wake Forest, 36-34. Maye completed passes to nine different receivers as the Tar Heels ca tured the ACC Coastal Division title and improved to 9-1.

Virginia Tech linebacker Dax Hollifield was recognized as the Defender of the Nation, the Charlotte Touchdown Club announced. Boston College: Freshman Emmett Morehead has thrown for more than 300 yards in each of his first two games (vs. Duke and at NC State).

Clemson: Clemson has now produced its 30th nine-win season in school history. It is Clemson’s 13th under Head Coach Dabo Swinney, more than doubling College Football Hall of Famer Danny Ford (six).

Duke: After clinching bowl eligibility last week, the Blue Devils locked up their first seven-win regular season since 2018 with a 24-7 win over Virginia Tech.

Florida State: FSU ranks in first in the ACC in rushing offense, second in total offense and second in third-down conversions. The Seminoles lead the league with 213.6 rushing yards per game, which ranks 16th nationally.

Georgia Tech: Georgia Tech won its fourth-straight game at Virginia Tech’s Lane Stadium (2014, 2016, 2018, 2022). The Yellow Jackets became only the second visiting team to ever win four-straight games at Lane Stadium (Clemson).

Louisville: LG Caleb Chandler started the 50th game of his career against Clemson, making him one of only four Louisville players to start at least 50 games. He trails the school record for most starts by one game.

Miami: Jacurri Brown became first Miami true freshman to throw three touchdowns in his first start since Gino Torretta in 1989 and became the first Miami true freshman quarterback to start since Brad Kaaya in 2014.

North Carolina: North Carolina has six road wins in a season for the first time ever. The Tar Heels are 6-0 in league play for the first time going 8-0 in 2015.

NC State: MJ Morris became the first Wolfpack true freshman quarterback to start since Philip Rivers started the season opener on Sept. 2, 2000. In his first start, Morris finished 18-of-28 for 210 yards and three touchdowns and no interceptions to lead NC State to a rivalry game victory over Wake Forest.

Pitt: Israel Abanikanda achieved his seventh 100-yard rushing game of the season in the win over Virginia. Abanikanda finished with 121 yards on 24 carries and his 18th touchdown of the season.

Syracuse: Sean Tucker rushed for 52 yards on 14 attempts in the game and moved past Larry Csonka (1965-67), taking over fourth place on the all-time career rushing list with 2,951 career rushing yards.

Virginia: Brennan Armstrong broke the ACC’s record for passing yards by a left-handed quarterback against Pitt. He needed 17 yards to surpass Tanner Price (Wake Forest) coming into the contest. Armstrong’s 9,034 career passing yards are the 12th most by a left-handed quarterback in FBS history.

Virginia Tech: Tucker Holloway recorded a 90-yard punt return for a touchdown against Georgia Tech. It was Virginia Tech’s first punt return score since Tayvion Robinson’s vs. Richmond (Sept. 25, 2021). It was the fourth-longest punt return score in school history.

Wake Forest: Through 10 games, Wake Forest is averaging 36.6 points per game. Entering the 2022 season, Wake Forest is the only program in the ACC to average at least 30.0 per game in each of the last five seasons.

Blue Jays acquire Swanson and Macko

The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired RHP Erik Swanson and LHP Adam Macko from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for OF Teoscar Hernández.

Swanson, 29, pitched in 57 games for the Mariners last season, going 3-2 while setting career marks with a 1.68 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP. The 6-3, 222 lb. reliever was selected by the Texas Rangers in the eighth round of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft and was traded twice before debuting with Seattle in 2019. The right-hander from Fargo, ND, has kept a career 4.13 ERA while picking up four wins and six saves across four Major League campaigns.

Macko, 21, made eight starts for Advanced-A Everett in 2022, posting a 3.99 ERA while racking up 60 strikeouts across 38.1 innings. The native of Bratislava, Slovakia, attended Vauxhall High School in Alberta before he was drafted in the seventh round by the Mariners in 2019. Over the course of three Minor League seasons, the 6-0, 170 lb. lefty has gone 2-7 with a 3.98 ERA and a 14.02 SO/9.

Hernández, 30, batted .267 while recording 35 doubles, one triple, 25 home runs, and 77 RBI this past season. The 6-2, 215 lb. outfielder joined the Blue Jays in a trade from the Astros in 2017. He then claimed two Silver Slugger Awards and made the 2021 All-Star team while with the club. The native of Cotui, Dominican Republic, has played in 651 games during his Major League career, hitting .262 with 133 home runs and 380 RBI.

Angels sign LHP Tyler Anderson to three-year contract

ANAHEIM – The Angels today agreed to a three-year, $39 million contract ($13 million annually) with LHP Tyler Anderson.

Anderson, 32, was selected to the National League All-Star team in 2022 after going 15-5 with a 2.57 ERA (178.2 IP – 51 ER) and 138 strikeouts across 30 games (28 starts) for the Dodgers. Among N.L. leaders, he ranked tied for second in winning percentage (.750), fifth in ERA, tied for fifth in wins, seventh in WHIP (1.00) and eighth in opponent batting average (.221).

A native of Las Vegas, Anderson was selected by Colorado in the first round (20th overall) in the 2011 Draft out of the University of Oregon. He made his Major League debut with the Rockies in 2016 and has totaled 147 games (141 starts) across seven MLB seasons with the Rockies (2016-19), Giants (2020), Pirates (2021), Mariners (2021) and Dodgers (2022).

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s selected left-handed pitcher Hogan Harris from Triple-A Las Vegas and outfielder Lawrence Butler from High-A Lansing, the club announced today.

Harris pitched for three different teams in the A’s farm system last season and combined to go 2-4 with a 3.42 ERA and .626 opponents OPS in 23 games, including 22 starts.  He made seven starts with High-A Lansing, was promoted to Double-A Midland on June 13 where he appeared in eight games, and then earned a promotion to Triple-A Las Vegas where he finished the season with eight starts.  The 25-year-old left-hander held the opposition to a .192 batting average and struck out 105 batters in 73.2 innings, an average of 12.83 per nine innings.  Harris was the A’s third round selection in the 2018 draft out of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and is 3-9 with a 3.16 ERA in 38 games, including 35 starts, as a minor leaguer.  He missed the entire 2018 and 2021 seasons due to injury that eventually led to “Tommy John” surgery, and the 2020 season due to the pandemic.

Butler batted .270 with 11 home runs, 41 RBI, 13 stolen bases and an .825 OPS  in 81 games with High-A Lansing in a season interrupted by a two-month stint on the injured list with a dislocated left elbow.  He also went 1-for-9 in a three-game rehab assignment with the A’s affiliate in the Arizona Rookie League.  The 22-year-old left-handed hitter played for Mesa in the Arizona Fall League following the season and hit .241 with two home runs, 16 RBI, six stolen bases and 15 walks (.389 on-base percentage) in 19 games.  Butler received the Dernell Stenson Sportsmanship Award following the AFL season.  He was originally selected by Oakland in the sixth round of the 2018 draft and is a .247 career hitter with a .341 on-base percentage, 35 home runs, 153 RBI and 46 stolen bases in 287 games over four seasons in the minors.
