NBA Preview: Sacramento Kings at Atlanta Hawks

0

The surging Sacramento Kings put their seven-game winning streak on the line when they make their only visit to play the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday.

Sacramento extended its streak, its longest since November 2004, with a 113-109 win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday. The Hawks are coming off a 114-102 loss at Cleveland on Monday.

The Hawks swept the two-game series with Sacramento last season. The Hawks have won the last two games against the Kings in Atlanta.

The game will mark the return of former Hawk Kevin Huerter, a popular player who spent four seasons with Atlanta after being the 19th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. Huerter averaged 11.4 points during his tenure with the Hawks, where he established his reputation for 3-point shooting prowess. He was traded to the Kings in July for Maurice Harkless, Justin Holiday and a first-round pick.

Huerter scored 18, including four 3-pointers in the win over Memphis. De’Aaron Fox, who was named Western Conference Player of the Week on Monday, scored 32 and Harrison Barnes added 26 in the win.

The Hawks have missed Huerter’s 3-point touch. Atlanta was second in the league last season with 37.4 percent, but rank 27th in 3-point percentage (32.0). Even Trae Young’s perimeter numbers are down; he’s shooting 30.4 percent on 3’s and Monday made just 1-for-7.

Young is otherwise having a fine season. He is averaging 27.2 points and 9.5 assists and has posted a double-double in three of his last five games. Young is one 10-assist game away from tying Doc Rivers (138) for the most in franchise history.

With De’Andre Hunter out with the flu, Atlanta coach Nate McMillan gave first-round draft pick A.J. Griffin his first start on Monday and he responded with 17 points and three steals in 36 minutes. Griffin had the game-winning basket at the buzzer to beat Toronto on Monday. He is averaging 8.4 points.

Atlanta has scored at least 100 points in each of its first 17 games for just the fourth time in franchise history, and in 38 straight, the longest active streak in the NBA. Sacramento had its string of six straight games with at least 120 points broken by Memphis.

NBA Preview: Philadelphia Sixers at Charlotte Hornets

0

The Philadelphia 76ers should be riding a high when they arrive for Wednesday night’s game against the host Charlotte Hornets.

The Hornets are just about at a low spot.

How that impacts the teams could be a bit of a curiosity on the eve of Thanksgiving.

Coach Doc Rivers had his Philadelphia team in a good mindset this week, though that might have been easy given that Ben Simmons was returning to Philadelphia with an opposing team Tuesday.

The injury-taxed 76ers were without Joel Embiid and James Harden on Tuesday and still edged rival Brooklyn 115-106.

Rivers has been dealing with some roster uncertainty because of his players’ various ailments. Playing on back-to-back nights could bring those further into play.

The Hornets just want to be better in any way possible. They’ve lost 11 of their last 12 games.

There are lots of things that need to improve to get Charlotte on track. Some might be relatively simple.

The Hornets should be relatively well-rested. Without games Monday and Tuesday, they had their first two-day break since Oct. 24-25.

Part of the injury situation looks brighter for the Hornets, with Gordon Hayward returning late last week and Dennis Smith Jr. back in action Sunday following a four-game absence.

LaMelo Ball might still be out with another ankle injury; if that’s the case, the Hornets are bound to rely on a different level of personnel.

The Hornets have just five players who have appeared in all 18 games. Terry Rozier has missed seven games, but he holds the team’s top scoring average at 20.3, just above Kelly Oubre Jr. (19.4), who has played in every game.

Charlotte backup center Nick Richards has back-to-back double-doubles for the first time in his career.

The 76ers are counting on their depth, even with the quick turnaround.

Harris has been among the 76ers with ailments, but he poured in a team-high 24 points to help beat Brooklyn.

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Sam Houston shot 52.4 percent (33-of-63) from the field, including 54.5 percent (12-of-22) from three-point range, as the Bearkats topped the Northern Illinois University men’s basketball team, 88-54, on Tuesday afternoon (Nov. 22) at the Rocket Mortgage Fort Myers Tip-Off at Suncoast Credit Union Arena.

An early 9-0 run gave Sam Houston (5-0) a 12-4 lead six minutes into the first half. After a pair of free throws from Russell, the Bearkats knocked in two triples to extend their advantage to 18-6 with 12 minutes left before the intermission.

Back-to-back baskets from Keshawn Williams (Chicago Heights, Ill./Tulsa) and Nutter helped the Huskies trim the Sam Houston advantage back to single-digits, 19-10, just past the midway point of the half.

Williams finished with nine points in the contest.

The Bearkats used a 10-0 run to take a 34-12 lead before a basket from Russell ended the run. NIU (1-4) scored six of the final eight points of the half as Sam Houston took a 41-22 lead into the intermission.

Nutter and Russell each had a half-dozen to pace the Huskies in the opening 20 minutes, Qua Grant and Donte Powers both had 10 for Sam Houston. The Bearkats shot 50 percent (15-of-30) from the field in the first half, including 58.3 percent (7-of-12) from three-point range. Sam Houston forced 15 first half NIU turnovers, converting them into 20 points.

In the second half, the Huskies shot 44.4 percent (12-of-27) from the field but were unable to slow down the Bearkats, who shot 54.5 percent (18-of-33) in the second 20 minutes.

A-State Men’s Basketball Rallies Past UT Martin, 70-64

JONESBORO, Ark. – Four Arkansas State players scored in double figures, including Omar El-Sheikh with his first double-double this season, to help the Red Wolves overcome an eight-point deficit with 7:29 remaining and claim a 70-64 victory against UT Martin Tuesday evening at First National Bank Arena.

Arkansas State (3-2) shot 46 percent in comparison to UT Martin’s .386 mark and outrebounded the Skyhawks 40-29, improving to 3-0 this year on its home court.  Junior guard Caleb Field led all scorers with 17 points while dishing out seven of A-State’s 15 assists on the night.

Also scoring in double figures for the Red Wolves were Markise Davis with a season-high 15 points, Malcolm Farrington with a season-best 14 and El-Sheikh with 11.  El-Sheikh was also responsible for a season-high 11 rebounds, while Davis collected a career-best eight boards.

A back-and-forth game for much of the night, the contest featured nine ties and 10 lead changes with neither team ever holding a double-digit advantage.  However, with the score tied 48-48, UT Martin (3-4) put together a 9-1 run to grab its largest lead of the night at 57-49 with 7:29 left in the contest.

Capped by an Avery Felts three pointer, the Red Wolves responded with an 11-3 run to tie the game 60-60 at the 3:18 mark.  Felts finished the outing with seven points to go along with eight rebounds and four steals, which were both career-best totals for the sophomore guard.

The Skyhawks were able to push their advantage back to 64-62 with just 1:25 left on the clock before the Red Wolves closed the game out strong by scoring the last eight points.  A Fields’ free throw pulled A-State back to within one, and then Farrington gave the Red Wolves the lead for good with his fourth trey of the night with 40 seconds remaining.

UT Martin missed a three-point shot on its next position and Fields found Farrington open for a layup on the other end of the court before Felts set the final score with a pair of late free throws.

Farrington scored eight of his 14 points in the second half, while also finishing the night with a season-high five rebounds and career-best four assists.

Remaining at home for its next three games, Arkansas State returns to action Friday, Nov. 25, with 7:00 p.m. game against Prairie View A&M.  The contest will appear on ESPN+, and every A-State men’s basketball game can be heard live on the EAB Red Wolves Sports Network, including flagship station 107.9 FM in the Northeast Arkansas area.
