2022-23 REGULAR SEASON SCHEDULE
Dec. 10 vs. Detroit
April 10, 2023 at Detroit

NEW MONTH, NEW ACCOLADE

  • Forward Jason Robertson was named the NHL’s Third Star of the Week for the week ending Dec. 4 after sharing the league lead with five goals in three outings (5-1—6) to power the Stars to a 2-0-1 week.
  • He scored once in a 4-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Nov. 28, followed by his third career hat trick – including the game-winning goal – in a 5-0 triumph against the Anaheim Ducks on Dec. 1. Robertson closed the week with two points (1-1—2), as well as a shootout tally, as Dallas erased a four-goal third-period deficit in an eventual 6-5 loss to the Minnesota Wild on Dec. 4.
  • It’s the third time this season Robertson has been named an NHL Star of the Week, and it comes just a week after the 23-year-old was named the league’s First Star for the month of November. (More on that below).

BRIGHTEST STAR FOR THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER

  • Robertson was named the NHL’s First Star for the month of November after leading the league with 15 goals and 26 points in 14 games (15-11—26) to power the Stars to an 8-3-3 November.
  • Robertson, who became the first player in franchise history to top the league in both goals and points during a calendar month, found the scoresheet in each of his 14 November appearances.
  • Robertson’s November goal and point totals also ranked second for a single month in franchise history, behind Dino Ciccarelli’s 16 tallies in March 1986 (14 GP) and Tom McCarthy’s 27 points in November 1983 (12-15—27 in 13 GP).
  • Overall, Robertson recorded multiple points in nine of his 14 outings and a quartet of multi-goal performances, highlighted by three straight such games from Nov. 21-25 (6-1—7).

A LOOK BACK AT ROBO’S 18-GAME POINT STREAK

  • Jason Robertson had 21 goals and 34 points (21-13—34) over his 18-game point streak, which goes down as the longest point streak in Dallas Stars history (1993-present) and the second-longest point streak in franchise history (1967-present). Only Brian Bellows’ 20-game point streak from Jan. 11-Feb. 21, 1986 with the Minnesota North Stars is longer.
  • Only two active players recorded a longer point streak age 23 or younger: Paul Stastny (20 GP in 2006-07), Sidney Crosby (19 GP 2007-08 & 16 GP in 2008-09).
  • He had goals in 15 of those 18 games and had 12 multi-point efforts over that span, including three consecutive multi-goal performances (Nov. 21 vs. Colorado, Nov. 23 vs. Chicago and Nov. 25 vs. Winnipeg).

  • Robertson has recorded three hat tricks since his debut season in 2019-20, surpassing Jamie Benn (2) for the most by a Stars player of that span.
  • Robertson had goals in six consecutive games from Oct. 27-Nov. 8, becoming the fifth player in franchise history to have a goal streak of six games or more before turning 24, and the second player in Dallas Stars history (1993-present) to do so. Robertson followed Neal Broten from Jan. 23-Feb. 4, 1982 (7-12—19 in 7 GP), Jamie Benn from March 1-11, 2011 (6-1—7 in 6 GP), Mike Modano from Feb. 29-March 10, 1992 (7-2—9 in 6 GP) and Danny Grant from Oct. 16-29, 1969 (6-1—7 in 6 GP).
  • Robertson has been named the NHL’s First Star of the Week twice already this season for the weeks ending Nov. 27 and Nov. 6.
  • The Arcadia, California native is averaging better than a point-per-game pace through his four NHL seasons (81-85—166 in 155 GP).

THERE’S A DANGEROUS KIND OF COOL ABOUT YOU

  • With two assists (0-2—2) on Thursday vs. Ottawa, forward Roope Hintz boosted his season totals to 32 points (11-21—32) in 26 games.
  • Hintz is on pace for a 100-point season – a feat not yet achieved by a Stars player since the club relocated to Dallas in 1993. The last player in franchise history with 100+ points in a season was Dino Ciccarelli (52-51—103 in 80 GP) with the North Stars in 1986-87.
  • He ranks third on the team in multi-point games (9) behind Jason Robertson (14) and Jamie Benn (10).
  • Hintz has eight points in his past four games (3-5—8) and 25 points in his previous 19 overall (9-16—25).
  • The 26-year-old has skated in 26 contests this season with Dallas and ranks second on the club with 32 points. Among team leaders, he ranks first in assists (21), co-leads in shorthanded goals (1) and shares second in game-winning goals (2). He’s also third in plus-minus (+16), ranks second among forwards in TOI/GP (17:17) and third in power-play TOI/GP (2:46).
  • Hintz (3-1—4) recorded his second career hat trick and tied his career high for points in a game on Dec. 4 vs. Minnesota.
  • Hintz’ three-goal effort gave the Stars two consecutive games with hat tricks (Jason Robertson, Dec. 1 vs. ANA).
  • He had a 10-game point streak from Oct. 27-Nov. 17, tallying 15 points (6-9—15) over that span including four multi-point efforts.
  • With two goals on his 26th birthday on Nov. 17 at Florida, Hintz became just the second player in franchise history (1967-present) to score multiple goals on his birthday (also Dave Gagner, Dec. 11, 1990).
  • Hintz is one of four players on the Stars to have a shorthanded goal this season (also Radek Faksa, Luke Glendening and Joel Kiviranta).
  • Hintz and Robertson became the third pair of Stars/North Stars teammates with simultaneous 10-game point streaks, joining Brian Bellows and Neal Broten (10 GP from Jan. 23-Feb. 13, 1986) as well as Steve Payne and Bobby Smith (10 GP from Feb. 10-28, 1980).
  • On Nov. 29 the Stars signed Hintz to an eight-year contract extension, which begins in the 2023-24 season and runs through the 2030-31 campaign. The eight-year contract extension is worth $67.6 million and has an average annual value (AAV) of $8.45 million.
  • In five NHL seasons, Hintz has earned 202 points (91-111—202) in 265 career NHL games. He’s tied for sixth in Dallas Stars history (1993-present) with six career shorthanded goals and shares 12th with 18 career game-winning goals.

I FEEL INVINCIBLE AGAIN

  • With the game-winning goal in sudden death on Dec. 8 vs. Ottawa, forward Tyler Seguin (1-0—1) scored his 10th career overtime goal to surpass Mike Modano for sole possession of second place in franchise history (1967-present) behind only Jamie Benn (11).
  • The OT tally marked Seguin’s 47th game-winning goal with Dallas. Only two players in franchise history have more: Modano (92) and Benn (52).
  • The Brampton, Ontario native enters Saturday’s contest against Detroit with five points (1-4—5) in his past eight games and 20 points (5-15—20) in 27 games overall this season.
  • With his first of two assists (0-2—2) on Nov. 19 against the New York Islanders, Seguin recorded career point No. 700, becoming the first player from the 2010 NHL Draft to reach the 700-point mark.
  • Seguin leads the 2010 draft class in points (310-396—706), ranks second in goals (310) and ranks fifth with a +66 rating. He also leads the class with 56 game-winning goals and shares second with 10 overtime markers.

  • Pavelski (38 years, 146 days) also became the third player in franchise history (1967-present) to register three points in a period at age 38 or older, joining Dean Prentice (40 years, 65 days) on Dec. 9, 1972 and Sergei Gonchar (39 years, 245 days) on Dec. 14, 2013.
  • He passed Chris Chelios (948) for 12th all-time in points among U.S.-born skaters with an assist against the Ducks on Dec. 1.
  • With his 157th career power-play goal scored on Nov. 26 at Colorado, Pavelski tied Mike Modano for the fourth most by a U.S.-born player. (Jeremy Roenick is third all-time with 184 PPG). It marked Pavelski’s 10th goal of the season and the 431st of his NHL career.
  • With 431 career NHL goals, Pavelski needs three more to tie Patrick Kane (434) for seventh all-time in goals among U.S.-born skaters. Kane is also the only active U.S.-born skater with more goals than Pavelski.
  • Pavelski has eight multi-point games on the season and 44 since joining the Stars in 2019-20.
  • Only two Stars have notched more multi-point games for the franchise than Pavelski over that span: Jason Robertson (50) and Roope Hintz (49).
  • Pavelski has points (6-16—22) in 14 of his past 19 games and has earned at least one point in 17 of 27 overall (10-19—29).

  • Benn recorded the 45th multi-goal game of his NHL career on Nov. 11 vs. San Jose and moved within two of tying Bill Goldsworthy (47) for fourth place on the Stars/North Stars franchise’s all-time list.
  • With a hat trick (3-0—3) against the Oilers on Nov. 5, Benn (333) surpassed Dino Ciccarelli (332) for sole possession of third place among franchise leaders (1967-present) in goals.
  • In addition, Benn (7) trails only Ciccarelli (14) and Bill Goldsworthy (8) for the most three-goal outings in Stars/North Stars franchise history (1967-present). Note: Mike Modano also had seven hat tricks with the Stars/North Stars franchise.
  • Among team leaders, the 33-year-old shares third in goals (10), ranks fourth in points (10-16—26) and is tied for fourth in assists (16). He also ranks second in power-play points (11) and third in power-play goals (4).

CAUGHT UP TO SPEED ABOVE THESE DREAMS I PLANTED

  • Heiskanen enters Saturday’s game vs. Detroit with points in five of his past seven games (3-6—9).
  • Heiskanen had a season-high three points (0-3—3) in the Stars’ win over Anaheim on Dec. 1, which, at the time, gave him 19 points

  • One game shy of 300 in his career, Heiskanen has 38 goals, 114 assists and 152 points in his NHL career while averaging 24:11 TOI over that span.

I’M APPROACHING A BREAKTHROUGH

  • Rookie forward Wyatt Johnston (0-2—2) registered his second career multi-point game with two assists, including the primary helper on Tyler Seguin’s overtime-winning marker on Dec. 8 against Ottawa.
  • Johnston has five points (2-3—5) in his past five games and 12 points (7-5—12) in 27 games overall.
  • He potted his seventh goal of the season on Dec. 1 vs. Anaheim. The only rookies with more are Seattle’s Matty Beniers (10) and Ottawa’s Shane Pinto (9).
  • At 19 years, 173 days, he became the first teenager in Stars/North Stars history (1967-present) to record a three-game goal streak on the road with his goal on Nov. 3 at Arizona. The last teenager to have a longer road run was Carolina’s Andrei Svechnikov (4 GP in 2019-20).
  • With a goal (1-0—1) on Oct. 25 against Boston, Johnston became the third youngest player in Dallas Stars history (1993-present) to score in consecutive games. Johnston followed Valeri Nichushkin (2 GP in 2013-14) and Miro Heiskanen (2x in 2018-10, both 2 GP).

Amateur standout Francis Oran is turning professional

0

Amateur standout Francis Oran is getting ready to turn professional on January 20th in Bethlehem, PA.

Oran, who is the one of the most accomplished amateur fighters coming out of the State of Pennsylvania in recent years, had his dreams set on becoming a 2020 Olympian. Unfortunately, the pandemic happened and with that Francis dream became a mirage. The AIBA (Amateur International Boxing Association) canceled a lot of the Olympics qualifiers and Francis Oran was not able to chase his dreams of qualifying for the Olympics.

Now two years later, Francis has set his goals at becoming a World Champion at the professional level. The former amateur National Champion had set his sight on building a strong team around him to help him chase his goals. For his manager he chose Trifon Petrov.

“I’ve heard amazing things about Trifon Petrov. The work he has done with his other fighters speaks volumes. I’m extremely excited to be part of his team.” said Oran.

“I’m extremely excited to have the opportunity to work with Francis. I’ve followed his career for a long time, and I absolutely believe he has the skill set and determination to become a world champion.” said Petrov.

After signing with Petrov, the 24 year old Francis Oran inked a co-promotional deal with Marshall Kauffman of King’s Promotions and Tony Jeter of Jeter Promotions.

“I’ve known Marshall since I was a kid, I can’t wait to work with him. I’ve also heard only good things about Tony, he does big things in Maryland and also Pennsylvania. I feel that with Marshall and Tony in my corner I would stay very busy, and I can’t wait for that.” said Oran.

Marshall Kauffman, a Pennsylvania Hall of Fame promoter is also looking forward to working with Oran.

“I’ve known this young man for over 10 years and the sky’s the limit for him.” said Kauffman.

Tony Jeter of Jeter Promotions plans to bring Francis to his event in Maryland in February.

“Francis is an excellent fighter, he has all the tools in the box to have an extremely successful career.” said Jeter.

Francis is trained by Paul Pinnock. Pinnock has been with Francis from the start of his boxing journey, winning multiple national and international tournaments. Now they are looking to bring that same success into the paid ranks.

Head Coach Mike O’Shea signs three-year contract extension

0

WINNIPEG, MB., – The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today announce that head coach Mike O’Shea has signed a three-year contract extension which will have him continue to lead the football club through the 2025 Canadian Football League season.

A back-to-back winner of the Annis Stukus Trophy as the CFL’s top coach in 2021 and 2022, O’Shea ranks third in career wins in Blue Bombers franchise history with 82, behind only Bud Grant (102) and Cal Murphy (86). He is currently the CFL’s longest-serving head coach, having led the Blue Bombers for eight years since accepting the role in December of 2013.

The Blue Bombers are 82-58 under O’Shea since 2014 with two Grey Cup championships, three straight appearances in the championship game and six consecutive double-digit win seasons – matching a franchise-best stretch first established from 1957-62. Over the last two years, the club is 26-6, including a franchise-record 15 wins in 2022.

The Blue Bombers are continually one of the CFL’s most disciplined teams and were the least-penalized team in 2022 for a fifth consecutive season. The defence ranked first in fewest points allowed and second in points scored in 2022.

The club has also had successive seasons with three players recognized for the CFL’s highest individual awards, as quarterback Zach Collaros (Most Outstanding), left tackle Stanley Bryant (Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman), joined receiver Dalton Schoen (Most Outstanding Rookie) at the podium this year. In 2021, Collaros, Bryant and Adam Bighill (Most Outstanding Defensive Player) were also honoured.

O’Shea was named to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2017 after a stellar playing career with the Toronto Argonauts and Hamilton Tiger-Cats that saw him be a part of three Grey Cup championship teams.

O’Shea played in 271 regular season CFL games, 18 playoff contests and three Grey Cups. The native of North Bay, Ontario, was a five-time Division All-Star (1994, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2000) and was named a CFL All-Star and the league’s Most Outstanding Canadian in 1999. His first league-wide award came in 1993 when he was named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Rookie Player.

He began his coaching career as the Special Teams Coordinator with the Toronto Argonauts in 2010 and served there through 2013 – winning a Grey Cup in 2012 – before being hired by the Blue Bombers.

O’Shea is an alumnus of the University of Guelph and is a member of the Guelph Gryphons Sports Hall of Fame. He and his wife Richere have three children: Michael, Ailish and Aisling.

“Viv has the potential to be one of the best players in our league and she showed that promise during her time on the field last year, so we are excited to keep her with the Pride for the next two seasons,” Head Coach Seb Hines said. “She made an essential impact when she was on the pitch and continued to improve as the season went on. Her injury was an unfortunate end to a strong rookie season, but she has been working as hard as she can to be able to be ready for 2023.”

“I’m so grateful to be able to play for this Club and community for two more years. We’re building for the future and I’m so happy to be a part of it,” Villacorta said. “I can’t wait to get back out on the field next year and to see all of our fans back at Exploria Stadium.”

The midfielder made her professional debut on May 1 in the Pride’s 2022 regular season opener. She would go on and appear in 15 games, making 13 starts and totaling 1,044 minutes played before suffering an ankle injury on August 26, which forced her to be placed on the Season Ending Injury list for the rest of the 2022 campaign.

A product out of UCLA, Villacorta missed the 2021 campaign after suffering an ACL tear during her final season in college. Up until the injury, Villacorta appeared in all 72 potential games for the Bruins with 60 starts and tallied seven goals to go along with 16 assists in her collegiate career.

Houston Dash re-signs forward Michelle Alozie

NEED TO KNOW:

FW Michelle Alozie is under contract through the 2024 regular season
Alozie made 10 appearances during the 2022 regular season including a start in Houston’s first ever playoff game
Alozie represents Nigeria on an international level and has helped the Super Falcons qualify for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup

HOUSTON – The Houston Dash have re-signed forward Michelle Alozie through the 2024 season, the team announced today.

“Michelle grew tremendously in her role for us in 2022. She stepped up in high pressure circumstances and proved to us she was up for the task in each situation,” Dash general manager Alex Singer said. “The energy she brings when she steps on the field is electrifying. Her speed and ability to threaten on the attack in addition to the defensive work she commits to through her relentless pressure on the opposition are what makes her important. It is exciting as we know the potential that she has, and I look forward to seeing her development and impact over the next two years.”

Alozie made 10 appearances, scored two goals during the 2022 regular season and earned the start in Houston’s first-ever playoff match.

The Apple Valley, California native scored her first goal of the season in Houston’s 5-0 win over Orlando on June 3.

Alozie scored the latest game-tying goal in club history when she scored the equalizer in the first minute of second-half stoppage time against the Washington Spirit, which was key to Houston’s playoff hopes at the time.

Alozie represents Nigeria at an international level and helped the Super Falcons qualify for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup next year after competing in the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations this past summer.

“To start of my professional career [here], it’s just been really nice and welcoming. The team has been really cool to me. Now, obviously, there’s been a lot of changes, but I feel like just the core of the team has been a major factor of me like wanting to stay,” Alozie said.

Alozie also says that Houston, as a community, has given her a lot of comfort off the pitch as well, which has helped her growth in all aspects of her life.

“I grew up in San Diego and in certain parts it has a very high POC population. I also see that here in Houston, and it makes me feel at home,” Alozie said. “It’s nice to see people that look like you around you, so that makes me feel at home. There’s such a large Nigerian community here and helps me stay in tune with my roots and so that’s why I feel like it feels like home.”

With the addition of Alozie, Houston now has 16 players under contract. The current Houston Dash roster can be found listed below in alphabetical order and by position:

Goalkeepers (2): Jane Campbell, Ella Dederick

Defenders (4): Julia Ashley, Allysha Chapman, Caprice Dydasco, Katie Naughton

Midfielders (3):
Shea Groom, Sophie Schmidt, Marisa Viggiano

Forwards (7): Michelle Alozie, Joelle Anderson, Ryan Gareis, Paulina Gramaglia, Nichelle Prince, Ebony Salmon, Maria Sanchez

Orlando Pride and Midfielder Erika Tymrak Agree to Two-Year Deal

Former NWSL Champion and league’s inaugural Rookie of the Year returns to the Pride

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Orlando Pride and midfielder Erika Tymrak have agreed to a new two-year contract, signing the player through the 2024 NWSL season, it was announced today. Tymrak rejoins the Pride after entering free agency earlier this offseason.

“Not only is Erika a strong, technical player that can contribute on the field, but she brings valuable veteran presence to our locker room. Having senior leaders to guide our younger players is very important for our team goals, and Erika is someone who we know understands and appreciates that responsibility,” Pride Head Coach Seb Hines said. “We’re excited that Erika has chosen to continue her career as part of the Pride and the project we are undertaking here in Orlando, and we look forward to seeing her back on the field in 2023.”

“I am absolutely thrilled to continue my career with the Pride as we promote this beautiful game and solidify our identity in this league. I’m excited to get back on the pitch and work towards bringing a championship to Orlando,” Tymrak said.

Tymrak made 15 appearances, including 10 starts during the 2022 regular season, with five additional appearances during the Challenge Cup. The University of Florida product recorded two assists, both of which came in the month of July during the Club’s seven-game unbeaten run.

A native of Detroit, Mich., Tymrak originally entered the league after being drafted in the second round (No. 11 overall) by FC Kansas City during the 2013 NWSL College Draft. She would go on and be named NWSL Rookie of the Year for the 2013 season. Tymrak would also play a vital role in helping FC Kansas City win back-to-back NWSL Championships in 2014 and 2015.

With 167 overall appearances across all NWSL competitions, Tymrak came out of retirement ahead of the 2021 season to join the Pride and has totaled 42 appearances in a Pride kit since.

You can also follow the Hornets’ women’s basketball program on all three platforms at the handle @SacStateWBB.

IN THE RANKINGS: Neither Sacramento State, nor CSU Bakersfield, are ranked nationally… The Hornets, however, are listed among those receiving votes in the College Insider Mid-Major poll for the second consecutive week, doubling last week’s total to 18 votes in this week’s poll.

NATABOU ON MID-MAJOR AWARD WATCH LIST: One season after showing she’s one of the best in the West, junior post Isnelle Natabou is garnering national attention heading into the 2022-23 campaign, named as one of 25 players to the watch list for the 2023 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award presented by Her Hoop Stats on Oct. 19. The first Big Sky Conference student-athlete ever to be named to the list for this particular award, Natabou is joined by 24 of her peers on the initial watch list and is only one of four from the West Coast named to the list along with Gonzaga’s Brynna Maxwell, Portland’s Alex Fowler, and San Francisco’s Ioanna Kimili. For more details, read the complete release on HornetSports.com.

NATABOU NAMED TO BIG SKY’S PRESEASON HONOR ROLL: In addition to her national honor, Natabou was also named to the seven-member preseason all-conference team, joining Montana State’s Darian White (who also was selected the MVP), Idaho’s Beyonce Bea, Montana’s Carmen Gfeller, Northern Colorado’s Hannah Simental, Montana State’s Kola Bad Bear, and Weber State’s Daryn Hickock. The native of the Czech Republic became only the third Hornet to earn preseason all-league honors in the process, joining former standouts Kennedy Nicholas (2019-20) and Brianna Burgos (2016-17).

BUT WAIT… THERE’S MORE!: The accolades continued to roll in for Natabou, who was also named the Big Sky’s Preseason Player of the Year according to ESPN.com, which made its picks for all 32 Division I conferences on Oct. 25.

ABOUT THE ROADRUNNERS: CSU Bakersfield played only its fifth game of the 2022-23 season on Wednesday night (Dec. 7), falling on the road at Pepperdine, 80-53… The Roadrunners enter the week with a 2-3 overall record, having played four of their first five games of the season away from home… CSUB’s two wins this season have come on the road at Fresno State (56-53) and at home against Omaha (69-68) by a combined four points… Sophomore forward Hennie van Schaik averages a team-best 14.0 ppg, but hasn’t played since the Nov. 11 game against Fresno State, while freshman guard Sophia Tougas is in double figures at 10.8 ppg.

SERIES NOTES: Saturday marks the fifth-ever meeting between the Hornets and Roadrunners, with Sacramento State winning the last three straight games between the two programs… The Hornets slowed the ‘Runners, 60-50, in Bakersfield last season… The two teams haven’t played in Sacramento since the 2011-12 season when the Hornets posted an 87-74 victory at the Nest… All four of the previous meetings have been decided by 10 points or fewer.

EARLY SEASON SUCCESS: Entering the home stretch of non-conference play, Sacramento State’s early season success in 2022-23 has the Hornets off to one of their best starts in the Division I era. The six non-conference victories are the most since the 2013-14 squad finished 8-2 in non-conference play en route to an 18-win season, while a sweep of the team’s remaining three non-conference clashes against CSU Bakersfield, CSUN, and Cal State Fullerton, would give the program its most non-conference triumphs in its Division I history with nine.

START ME UP: Despite having its six-game winning streak snapped, the Hornets are still off to its second-best start in the program’s Division I history with six wins in their first eight contests, trailing only the 7-1 eight-game start — one that eventually ballooned into an 11-1 start — to open the 2013-14 campaign.

THE HORNETS’ DYNAMIC DUO: It’s a bird… it’s a plane… nope… just a pair of high-scoring Hornets doing their thing. The tandem of senior Kahlaijah Dean and junior Isnelle Natabou came up big for Sacramento State on Wednesday at San Diego State, finishing with 25 and 23 points, respectively — the second time this season that the duo has scored at least 20 points apiece since the former scored 27 and the latter added 23 at Santa Clara on Nov. 14.

NO SUCH THING AS A FREE LUNCH: But there are such things as free points, and Dean snatched up as many as she could at San Diego State on Wednesday. The Bakersfield, Calif., native finished 10-of-11 from the line against the Aztecs en route to a game-high 25 points — the most makes from the stripe by a Hornet this season and the most in a game since Tiana Johnson had the same finish against Idaho on Feb. 20, 2020.

AND I’M FREEEEE…. FREEEEE THROWIN’: The Hornets’ 13 makes in 14 attempts on Wednesday at San Diego State marked the fourth time in the last five games that Sacramento State that they have reached double-digit makes and the best percentage (.929) with a minimum of 10 attempts since netting a perfect 11-for-11 at UC Santa Barbara on Dec. 18 last season.

PAINT ME A PICTURE: And the Hornets are the artists. Sacramento State has outscored its opponents in the paint in five of the team’s eight games this year, averaging 27.3 ppg in the key to the opposition’s 25.0 ppg and topping the 30-point plateau in three games this year — including a season-high 36 at Santa Clara on Nov. 14.

OFF AND RUNNING: Through eight games, Sacramento State has put opponents in a hole quickly, shooting 51 percent (54-for-105) from the field in the first quarter and 49 percent (52-for-106) in the second en route to halftime advantages in seven of its eight contests. The Hornets are shooting a combined .502 from the field in the first half compared to “just” .419 after the break.

HERE’S A QUARTER: No one has gotten off to a better start than Dean has in her last two games, scoring 11 points in each of her last two first quarters while shooting 6-of-7 from the floor, 4-of-4 from three-point range, and 6-of-7 from the line against Fresno State and San Diego State. Her first 10 minutes against the Aztecs marked her fourth double-digit scoring quarter of the year, joining her 14-point third quarter at Santa Clara and her 10-point second quarter against UC Santa Barbara. Of the team’s seven double-digit scoring quarters by an individual, five of those have come in the first.

BLOCKING IT OUT: Boasting the Big Sky Conference’s second-best scoring defense at 59.9 ppg allowed, the Hornets have also done work in the defensive glass, holding opponents to a league-best 29.7 rebounds per game — the only school holding teams to fewer than 30.4 rpg entering the week.

THIS IS PERFECT! PERFECT, PERFECT, PERFECT!: They say that nobody’s perfect, but junior Isnelle Natabou was just that against Fresno State on Dec. 3, finishing 7-of-7 from the field and 2-of-2 from the free throw line en route to sharing team-high honors with 16 points in the win. The shooting performance is the best of the season by a Hornet, surpassing teammate Kahlaijah Dean’s 5-for-5 showing against UTEP on Nov. 26, and is the best single-game showing in the program’s Division I history, besting Margaret Huntington’s 6-for-6 from the floor against Montana on Feb. 16, 2017.

SHE’S NO. 1! SHE’S NO. 1!: Finishing “just” 10-of-16 from the field at San Diego State on Wednesday, the Aztecs were able to cool off the nation’s field goal percentage leader in Natabou, but not enough to knock the junior from atop the list as she remains first in the NCAA leaderboard at .696 (55-for-79). The native of the Czech Republic has shot better than 60 percent from the field in a game in six of the team’s eight contests, with her low coming against UC Davis when she was “just” 4-of-8 from the field en route to a 13-point, 14-rebound double-double against the Aggies.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE DANGEROUS: Keep on eye on your box scores. If Isnelle Natabou has a double-double, you may be in trouble. A season high-tying 23 points and 10 rebounds later, Natabou collected her third-straight double-double and her fifth of the season overall at San Diego State — ranking No. 9 in the NCAA in that category. Over her last three games, Natabou is averaging 18.7 points and 11.7 rebounds while shooting 23-for-30 (.767) from the field and a perfect 10-for-10 from the line. In her five double-double performances this year, the Czech Republic native is averaging 17.6 ppg, 11.8 rpg, and shooting 36-for-50 (.720) from the floor.

14 AND COUNTING: Natabou’s 23 points against San Diego State gave her double-digit points in her last 14 consecutive games dating back to last season, averaging 16.6 ppg in that stretch while shooting .703 (97-for-138) from the field.

DISHING DIVA: Sophomore Katie Peneueta was a giver on Wednesday at San Diego State, dishing out a career-high six assists for the Hornets, which stands tied for the second most by a Sacramento State player this year behind only Kahlaijah Dean’s nine at Santa Clara on Nov. 14.

THREE IS MORE THAN TWO: Trust us… Peneueta has certainly done the math. In 29 career games with the Hornets, the Vancouver, Wash., native has made a living from long distance, sinking 73 of her 78 career field goals from behind the three-point line. At the media timeout of the second quarter on Nov. 22 against UC Davis, Peneueta’s last 30 makes from the field had all been three-pointers until she posted up and found room inside for a lay-up at the four-minute mark of the period — her first two-point basket since scoring inside at Northern Arizona with 21 seconds left in a 76-62 victory on Feb. 3 last year.

“HARNESS. ENERGY. BLOCK. BAD.”: Sophomore Katie Peneueta is feeling the flow at the defensive end of the court, swatting a career high-tying three blocks in the win over Cal Poly on Nov. 25 and blocking at least two shots in all but two games this season. Her lone block at San Diego State brought her season total to 15 — just six shy of her 22-game total of 21 blocks last year — while she enters the week leading the Big Sky Conference in both total blocks and blocks per game (1.88).

THE THEME FROM SWAT: The paint has not been a pleasant place to be for opposing shooters as of late as the Hornets have collected 24 of their 37 total blocks on the year in their last four contests, averaging 6.0 blocks per game as a team in that stretch. Sacramento State leads the Big Sky in both blocks and blocks per game and ranks No. 45 in the nation in the latter.

MINUTE WOMEN: There haven’t been many players in the Big Sky — let alone the entire country — who have seen more time on the court to start the year than the Hornets’ Kahlaijah Dean (36.1 mpg), Katie Peneueta (36.0 mpg — including all 45 minutes against UC Santa Barbara on Nov. 19), and Isnelle Natabou (35.8 mpg — including all 40 minutes against UTEP on Nov. 26). The trio ranks third, fourth, and sixth, respectively, in the league in minutes, while ranking among the top 40 in the NCAA.

THE DEAN OF SCORING: Dean brings with her a pedigree of knowing where the basket is, reaching the 1,000 career point milestone as only a junior at Oakland University and finishing her four years with the Golden Grizzlies with 1,425 points to her name. Following her first seven performances in the green and gold, the Bakersfield, Calif., native has brought her total up to 1,578 career points, ranking No. 30 among active scorers across the country and posting a total that would rank fourth on Sacramento State’s all-time scoring list.

PASSING THE CRASH TEST: Another 14 rebounds in the win over UTEP is nothing new for Natabou, who owns three of the top five single-game rebounding performances in the Big Sky this season, along with her 20 against UC Irvine (more on that later) and the 14 against UC Davis. Natabou ranks among the top 25 in the nation in rebounds per game (12th) and defensive rebounds (24th), and stands atop the Big Sky in both rebounding average and offensive rebounds (3.9 rpg), while standing second in defensive rebounds (7.1 rpg).

ARE YOU BOARD?: Natabou clearly wasn’t in the Hornets’ opener against UC Irvine, as her 20 rebounds were the most since she had 22 against Idaho in an overtime win on Jan. 22 last year and was her third career game with 20-or-more rebounds. Nationally, the 20-rebound performance is tied for the eighth-highest in the NCAA for a single-game — and the most of any Big Sky player — as of Dec. 5, and stands as one of only fourteen 20-rebound games in the NCAA entering the week.

MIND THE GAP: The 22-point margin of victory over Causeway rival UC Davis on Nov. 22 marked the largest against an NCAA Division I opponent in head coach Mark Campbell’s tenure at the helm of the Sacramento State program and was the largest since a 23-point win over Sonoma State on Nov. 16 of last year.

HORNETS GO GLOBAL WITH SIGNEES: Head Coach Mark Campbell racked up the frequent flier miles to sign four student-athletes during the recent NCAA signing period, welcoming post Paula Haw and guard Lina Falk from Germany, forward Summah Hanson from Australia, and guard Sofia Alonso from Spain.
