0

Rising undefeated lightweight contenders Michel “La Zarza Ali” Rivera and Frank “The Ghost” Martin will clash in an intriguing 12-round WBA Lightweight Title Eliminator as they headline live on SHOWTIME Saturday, December 17 in a Premier Boxing Champions event at The Chelsea inside The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

The SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® telecast begins at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT and will also see former world champion José Uzcátegui return to action against unbeaten former amateur standout Vladimir Shishkin in a 12-round IBF Title Eliminator. Plus, bantamweight contenders face off as Vincent Astrolabio and Nikolai Potapov battle in a 12-round IBF Title Eliminator that kicks off the telecast.

“Michel Rivera vs. Frank Martin is one of the best matchups that can be made in the stacked lightweight division and the fans watching on SHOWTIME and at The Cosmopolitan are surely in for a treat on December 17,” said Tom Brown, President of TGB Promotions. “Each has shown immense skill and heart in earning their status as contenders, and they’ve proven that they’re ready to fight whoever it takes to become world champion. Adding in two closely matched bouts on the televised undercard makes this a night of drama that fight fans will not want to miss.”

Tickets for the event, which is promoted by Man Down Promotions and TGB Promotions, are on sale now and can be purchased through Ticketmaster.com.

Born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and now fighting out of Miami, Fla., Rivera (24-0, 14 KOs) burst onto the scene in 2019, making his United States debut with a victory over Rene Tellez Giron. The 24-year-old continued his ascent with five more victories in 2020 and 2021, including knockouts of Jon Fernandez and Anthony Mercado. Most recently he outboxed Jerry Perez, earning a unanimous decision victory in October after dominating the previously unbeaten Joseph Adorno on his way to a unanimous decision in March.

“This is the type of fight that I’ve been asking for and I can’t wait to get into the ring,” said Rivera. “Martin is a strong opponent with a good record, but I’m ready to show that I am the future of the lightweight division. I’ve been training hard in Miami so that I’m ready for anything that Martin brings. Make sure you tune in to this fight!”

The 27-year-old Martin (16-0, 12 KOs) ascended the lightweight rankings in 2021 with a pair of impressive victories before delivering a New Year’s Day KO over veteran Romero Duno. In April 2021, Martin knocked out the previously unbeaten Jerry Perez in a dominating performance before earning a unanimous decision over Ryan Kielczweski in August. He produced a methodical destruction of Jackson Mariñez in July when he stopped him in the 10th round, showing the skill set that has made him one of the most highly touted contenders at lightweight. Originally from Indianapolis, Ind., Martin now trains in the Dallas area under the guidance of Derrick James alongside his promoter and unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr.

“I’m excited to be able to go out there and prove to myself and prove to the fans how great I am,” said Martin. “Michel Rivera is a good fighter. He’s technically sound and seems to have a determined mentality which means he’s going to come out and give a good fight on December 17. I’m just a few steps ahead of Rivera as far as having speed, power and ring IQ. I feel I have more in the arsenal. This is going to be an action-packed fight. There is going to be a lot of excitement, and a lot of hard shots are going to be dished out, so if you want to see a bang ’em fight, get ready to see two hungry, undefeated fighters go at it. Just remember: Every underdog had to go outside to an uncomfortable situation to become the top dog.”

Born in Venezuela and fighting out of Tijuana, Mexico, Uzcátegui (32-4, 27 KOs) captured a 168-pound world title in March of 2018 by stopping veteran contender Andre Dirrell after eight rounds. The 31-year-old put himself in position to fight for a title with four straight stoppage victories from 2015 through 2016, including a win over then unbeaten Julius Jackson. Since losing the title to unbeaten champion Caleb Plant in January 2019, Uzcátegui has rebounded to win four of his last five fights, including most recently knocking out Felipe Romero in May.

“I am thrilled to be returning to fight on SHOWTIME on December 17,” said Uzcátegui. “That is where I won my world title and I can’t wait to put on another great performance. I am looking at this fight against Shishkin as my chance to reclaim my belt. I’m leaving it all in the ring in this fight. It’s all or nothing for me once I step between the ropes.”

Now fighting out of the resurgent Detroit boxing scene under the guidance of the renowned SugarHill Steward, Shishkin (13-0, 8 KOs) is a Russian native who turned pro in 2016 following a prolific amateur career. The 31-year-old stopped veteran contender Nadjib Mohammedi in October 2018 before putting together his most recent five victories in stateside bouts. That run includes three appearances on SHOBOX: The New Generation and started with an eighth-round stoppage of DeAndre Ware on SHOBOX in 2019, a 2020 triumph over the previously unbeaten Ulises Sierra and most recently a sixth-round TKO of Jeyson Minda in March.

“This is an incredible opportunity for me to get closer to my ultimate dream of becoming world champion,” said Shishkin. “My opponent is a strong former champion with a proven record and an excellent skill set. However, me and my team are doing everything we can to be 100% on December 17. I believe that I’m facing a great opponent who will allow me to showcase my style of fighting.”

The 25-year-old Astrolabio (17-3, 12 KOs) put himself into world title contention with an upset victory over longtime pound-for-pound staple Guillermo Rigondeaux in February. A native of General Santos City in the Philippines, Astrolabio will make his U.S debut on December 17 as he looks to take one step closer to a world title opportunity. Prior to that decision victory in February, Astrolabio’s previous five wins had all come by knockout.

“I am very excited to make my U.S. debut on December 17,” said Astrolabio. “I want to thank my promoter Manny Pacquiao and my whole team for making this dream come true. I’m honored to be fighting in a world title eliminator. I truly feel that I earned this opportunity with my victory over Rigondeaux. This is my first fight on SHOWTIME and I’m training hard to make it a memorable one.”

Potapov (23-2-1, 11 KOs) has held his current training camp in Miami as he is co-trained by John David Jackson while he too looks to solidify his shot at a world title. The Russian native enters the fight on a three-bout winning streak following a narrow decision loss to Joshua Greer in July 2019. The 32-year-old turned pro in 2010 and was unbeaten until a 2016 draw against fellow contender Stephon Young.

“This is an important stage of my career and a fight that I’m putting everything into,” said Potapov. “Winning a world title has always been my dream. I know that this fight is one step away from that dream. I’m going to do everything I can in my power to make it a reality. I hope that my opponent comes into the ring at his best as well, so that we can give the fans a great fight. No matter what, I’m planning on having my hand raised.”

Boxing Preview: Chris Billam-Smith (16-1-0, 11 KO’s) at Armend Xhoxhaj (14-2-0, 7 KO’s)

0

Get ready for an early Christmas gift as cruiserweight hero Chris Billam-Smith comes back to town to headline a cracking BOXXER card at the Bournemouth International Arena on Saturday, December 17th – live and exclusive in the UK & Ireland on Sky Sports.

‘The Gentleman’ celebrated a unanimous points victory over Isaac Chamberlain in a destructive display back in the summer.

Billam-Smith vs Xhoxhaj – FITE, Sky Sports – Dec 17 – 2 pm ET
And the former Commonwealth king (16-1-0, 11 KOs) is ready to raise the roof again and take a giant leap towards a world title shot in 2023 when he takes on dangerous Albanian fighter Armend Xhoxhaj (14-2-0, 7 KOs).

The 28-year-old – known as ‘The Bombardier’ – defeated Roman Fress back in May to claim the WBO Inter-Continental Cruiserweight title and will head to the South Coast looking to celebrate another major upset.

In what could be a late fight of the year contender, British super light-heavyweight champion ‘Super’ Dan Azeez (17-0, 11 KOs) fights experienced, world level campaigner Rocky Fielding (30-20, 17 KOs).

Azeez displayed his class in September when he outshone Shakan Pitters on Merseyside. But the Londoner faces arguably the toughest test of his career to date as he looks to protect his flawless record against Liverpool’s Fielding – whose only-ever defeats have come against Canelo Alvarez and Callum Smith.

‘Sweet’ Caroline Dubois (4-0, 3 KOs) made history in October when she knocked out Milena Koleva in front of a sold-out crowd at The O2 in London – watched by a record-breaking two million viewers on Sky Sports.

The 21-year-old lightweight prodigy has her heart set on winning world titles and she completes an unforgettable 12 months back in Bournemouth – the scene of her stunning summer stoppage over Happy Daudi.

Fresh from his sensational third-round stoppage win over Ross McGuigan in Manchester last weekend, rising cruiserweight star Viddal Riley (7-0, 4 KOs) returns as he looks to close out a phenomenal year with yet another highlight reel performance.

And Bournemouth’s own Lee Cutler (11-1-0, 7 KOs) will be keen to spread some festive cheer for the local fans in attendance.

BOXXER CEO & Founder, Ben Shalom said: “We were blown away by the crowd in Bournemouth earlier this summer and it is great to be heading back there in December.

“Chris Billam-Smith tore the roof of the place in his breathtaking win over Isaac Chamberlain. The noise was deafening and the atmosphere was absolutely electric. I’m expecting the fans to reach a whole new level as CBS continues his march towards a world title shot in what will be a tough fight against Armend Xhoxhaj.

“We have a real treat in store as ‘Super’ Dan Azeez takes on Rocky Fielding. Rocky is a world level fighter, a big name in the UK and the only defeats on his resume are against Canelo Alvarez and Callum Smith.

“With Caroline Dubois and Viddal Riley in action too, this card is an early gift for British boxing fans.”

Chris Billam-Smith added: “I can’t wait to get back to Bournemouth in front of the best atmosphere in the country.

“Last time out was nothing short of incredible: the fight itself, the atmosphere, the occasion. This is the last step before the world title. I will put on a world class performance worthy of that chance and the phenomenal support.”

Full card to be shared later this week. Registration for pre-sale tickets is open now at Boxxer.com.

CINCINNATI WELCOMES SCOTT SATTERFIELD AS NEW HEAD COACH
• Cincinnati named Scott Satterfield the 43rd head coach in school history on Dec. 5. He brings a 76-48 record over 10 years as a head coach at Louisville and Appalachian State, including a 4-1 record in bowl games.
• He has seen 113 all-conference selections and was named the 2018 Sun Belt Coach of the Year and the 2019 ACC Coach of the Year after leading Louisville to a six-win improvement in his debut season with the Cardinals (from 2-10 to 8-5).

PACE JR. AND CORLEONE COLLECT MAJOR HONORS
• Senior linebacker Ivan Pace Jr. ranks in the Top 15 nationally in tackles for loss (19.5, third), tackles (120, 10th) and sacks (9.5, 14th), while leading a defense that ranked fifth in the nation in yards per play allowed (4.52). • The Bearcats program dates to 1885 and is one of the 10 oldest in FBS.

THE KEG OF NAILS IS BACK
• Cincinnati and Louisville restore a historic rivalry in a matchup for the “Keg of Nails.” The Bearcats and Cardinals will play for the 54th time with UC holding a 30-22-1 advantage in the series that started with a 7-0 Cincinnati victory in 1929. The trophy is a replica of a keg used to ship nails, which was initiated by the school’s fraternities to signify the winner is “tough as nails.”
• Cincinnati and Louisville played every year from 1966 to 1992 and from 1996 to 2013.
• The last two games were won by Louisville in overtime: 31-24 in 2013 and 34-31 in 2012. In 2013, Louisville QB Teddy Bridgewater tossed three touchdowns, including two to WR Devante Parker. In 2012, Bridgewater found Parker for two TDs, too.

• Ryan Montgomery’s eight- and 15-yard touchdown runs late in the third and midway through the fourth quarter rallied UC to a 24-20 lead at 6:27. Tulane responded with the game-winning 30-yard touchdown pass on the ensuing four-play, 75-yard drive.

• Defensively, linebacker Ivan Pace Jr. tallied 13 tackles.
• Tulane was led by running back Tyjae Spears, who finished with 181 rushing yards and two scores on 35 carries.

COOMBS GOES BOWLING
• Kerry Coombs is coaching his 12th bowl game, including his fifth at Cincinnati. His previous seven trips were at Ohio State from 2012-21 and all in the New Year’s Six. He spent the 2018-19 seasons with the Tennessee Titans.
• Two of his four bowl trips at Cincinnati were in the Sugar and Orange.
• He is best known in the city for his 16-year tenure as the head coach at Colerain High School in Cincinnati (1991-06), which boasts six alumni on the UC roster that includes First Team All-American Ivan Pace Jr. and starters Dontay Corleone, Deshawn Pace, Ja’Von Hicks and Eric Phillips.

• Satterfield had been the coach at Louisville, leading the Cardinals to a 7-5 mark in 2022 – making for one of the more unique bowl games in college football history.
• Satterfield is not involved in any bowl prep and will not attend the game as he focuses on recruiting and building a staff.
• Satterfield is 4-1 in bowls and was the 2018 Sun Belt Coach of the Year and 2019 ACC Coach of the Year after he led the Cardinals to a six-win improvement in his first year at the helm.
• On Dec. 9, Satterfield announced his first official staff hire when he released that Coombs will return to the Bearcats on a new three-year deal to be his secondary coach/special teams coordinator.

• Whyle, a PFF Third Team All-American in 2020 and three-time All-AAC selection from La Salle High School in Cincinnati, finished with 88 career receptions for 1,062 yards and 15 touchdowns. His 15 TDs surpassed former NFL star Brent Celek for the most in Cincinnati history by
a tight end. He is the third tight end ever to reach 1,000 career yards for the Bearcats.

THE GODFATHER RETURNS

brother and mother. Fletcher’s father, Dustin, a 23-year veteran in Australian Rules Football, came to the Cotton Bowl last season.

REACHED THE AAC WIN STREAK
• Cincinnati tied UCF for the most consecutive AAC regular season wins (17) and most consecutive AAC wins overall, including conference championship games, (19) before falling to UCF, 25-21.
• UCF won 17 regular season and 19 overall AAC games from 2017 to 2019. The Knights’ streak was snapped on Oct. 4, 2019 at Cincinnati to the Bearcats.

METAYER HAD TWO TDS IN SPRING SCRIMMAGE
• With senior all-conference tight end Josh Whyle opting out of the bowl to focuse on training for the Senior Bowl and the NFL Draft, redshirt freshman Chamon Metayer could have a bigger role in the Fenway Bowl.
• The Miami, Fla., native redshirted in 2021 and battled injuries in 2022, appearing in only five games. He had one catch for 32 yards against Kennesaw State.
• Metayer was the star of the 2022 UC spring football scrimmage, however, catching two touchdown passes.

THREE’S (100-YARD RUSHING) COMPANY
• Corey Kiner’s 109-yard output at Tulsa marked UC’s third 100-yard rusher on the season. Myles Montgomery had 104 vs. Kennesaw State, while Charles McClelland went for 101 vs. Miami (OH) and later had 179 yards against USF.
• It is UC’s first instance since 2020 when Gerrid Doaks, Jerome Ford and Desmond Ridder accomplished the feat. The last time UC had three RBs do so was 2018 (McClelland, Michael Warren II, Tavion Thomas).

MONTY PLAYING HIS BEST BALL
• Interestingly enough the one UC back who has not gained 100 yards this season is Ryan Montgomery. He earned the first team reps and the start in the season-opener at Arkansas, but was injured early in the season. He has rounded into shape, and was UC’s top back the final two
weeks of the year, generating career highs in carries in back-to-back weeks.
• Montgomery totaled 92 yards on 22 carries over the season’s first nine weeks.
• In weeks 10-12, he has totaled 178 yards and three TDs on 41 carries. He has set season highs in rushes in three consecutive weeks with 10 for 25 yards vs. ECU, 14-58 with one TD at Temple and 17-95 with two TDs vs. Tulane.
• He’s one of the best punt returners in college football and has seven punt returns for 75 yards (10.7 average) in 2022.

BEARCATS EDGE ECU
• UC scored all three of its touchdowns on 55-plus yards, beginning with Jadon Thompson’s 100-yard kick return, to defeat ECU, 27-25.
• Coe connected on a 21-yard FG with 9:42 left that proved to be the game-winner. The Bearcats forced a fourth-down incompletion with less than two minutes left to seal it.
• Tyler Scott’s 76-yard touchdown reception helped him to a seven-catch, 140-yard game, his fourth over the century mark this season. Tre Tucker also had a 55-yard TD reception

Serving as the quarterbacks coach in 2006, with his brother Brian as the quarterback, the Cardinals finished the season with a school best 12-1 record, which was capped by winning the Orange Bowl – the school’s first appearance in the Bowl Championship Series.

► One of the top quarterbacks in school history, Brohm returns to UofL where he enjoyed an outstanding collegiate career from 1989-93. A three-year starter, he still ranks among the Cardinals’ career leaders in touchdown passes (tied for eighth, 38), total offense (ninth, 5,410), completion percentage (ninth, .562), passing yards (10th, 5,451), and passing efficiency (ninth, 129.97), passing attempts (10th, 715) and completions (10th, 402) through the 2022 season.

San Francisco 49ers (1997-98), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1998), Denver Broncos (1999) and Cleveland Browns (2000).

TEAM NOTES
VISITING THE COYOTES
The Islanders visit the Coyotes tonight, as they make their first ever visit to Mullett Arena. It is the final meeting between the two teams this season, who last met on November 10 at UBS Arena when the Islanders fell to the Coyotes, 2-0. The Islanders last visited the Coyotes at Gila River Arena last season on October 23, 2021. The Islanders earned a 3-0 victory in the first in a pair of consecutive shutout victories for netminder Ilya Sorokin. Tonight’s matchup will be forward Zach Parise’s 38th career matchup against the Coyotes. He leads the Islanders in all three scoring categories against Arizona, tallying 29 points (13 goals, 16 assists) against the Coyotes throughout his career. The last time the Islanders visited the Coyotes, Brock Nelson recorded a goal an assist. He has recorded multi-point games in two of his last three meetings with Arizona. The Islanders enter tonight’s game with points in eight of their last ten road matchups against the Coyotes (6-2-2).

ON THE ROAD
Tonight’s matchup is the second of a five-game road trip for the Islanders, the longest in their schedule this season. The Islanders look to improve upon their 8-6-1 record on the road and earn their fifth victory of the season against an Central Division opponent.

SHOOTOUT
The Islanders began their season-long road trip against the Boston Bruins on Tuesday night, where they collected a point in a 4-3 shootout loss at TD Garden. It was their first shootout decision of the 2022-23 campaign. Josh Bailey, Noah Dobson, and Casey Cizikas each scored to help the Islanders collect the point. Following their matchup with Boston, the Islanders have a 9-7-1 record against Eastern Conference opponents this season.

MULTI-POINT GAMES
In the Islanders’ last matchup on December 13 vs. the Boston Bruins, three Islanders recorded multi-point games to help the team collect a point in the shootout loss: Islanders defenseman Noah Dobson recorded his ninth goal of the season and an assist, his second two-point contest in his last four games. Dobson’s nine goals this season are third-most amongst all NHL defensemen. It was Dobon’s sixth multi-point game of the year, and he is eight points shy of his career 100th. A native of Summerside, PEI, Dobson is tied with Anders Lee and Zach Parise for second on the Islanders in goals (9), and is tied with Ryan Pulock for the lead in assists amongst Islanders defensmen. He leads Islanders blueliners in points (20). Dobson is also one of three Islander defensemen in franchise history to record 26 goals before their 23rd birthday, joining Bryan Berard and Denis Potvin. Forward Josh Bailey also tallied a goal and assist, his first multi-point game of the season. They were his 565th and 566th career points, tying Pat LaFontaine for seventh-most in franchise history. Bailey enters tonight’s game with four points (one goal, three assists) in his last four games. Brock Nelson recorded two assists, his second multi-assist game of the season. They were his 29th and 30th points this season, tying Mathew Barzal for the team-lead. Nelson has recorded two multi-point games in his last three outings, and has been held off the scoresheet just twice in his last ten games. He has recorded ten points (five goals, five assists) since November 25. The Warroad, MN native recorded his third two-goal game of the season on Friday night in New Jersey, including his fifth game-winning goal of the season. He leads the team in game-winners and is tied with Kyle Connor, Sidney Crosby, and Brayden Point for second-most GWGs in the league. Five GWGs matches Nelson’s single-season career-high, which he first recorded during the 2019-20 season, and again in 2021-22.

BACK-TO-BACK
Tonight, the Islander begin their sixth back-to-back series of games this season, and their second this month. The Islanders enter tonight’s game with a 4-1-0 record in the front-end of back-to-backs this year.

FINDING THE SCORESHEET
Islanders forward Brock Nelson has not been held off the scoresheet for two consecutive games yet this season. He is one of 11 NHLers so far this season who have not been held pointless for two straight games.

TOI
Islanders defenseman Alexander Romanov skated 25:15 TOI on Tuesday night against the Bruins, setting a new season-high amongst Islanders. Romanov surpassed Scott Mayfield’s 25:05 TOI, set just four nights prior on December 9 in New Jersey. Mayfield is the Islanders’ time on ice leader in the last month, averaging 21:15 TOI per game since November 15. Mayfield has also skated nearly 98 minutes (97:57) shorthanded this season. Only two other skaters in the Metropolitan Division have spent more time on the penalty kill: John Marino (New Jersey) and Vladislav Gavrikov (Columbus).

GOALTENDING
Islanders netminder Semyon Varlamov has a 3-0-1 record in his last four starts, and has a 9-8-2 career record against the Coyotes. Varlamov made 30 saves on 33 shots faced on Tuesday night to help the Islanders earn a point in Boston. December 9 in New Jersey, Varlamov turned away 25 of 29 shots faced to help the Islanders earn their 17th win of the season and their seventh against a Metropolitan Division opponent, including seven minutes and 36 seconds of an extra Devils attacker. Varlamov tallied his sixth win of the season, and his 12th shutout as an Islander, when he turned away all 21 shots he faced on December 4 vs. Chicago. It was the 37th of his NHL career. Varlamov’s 37 career shutouts are tenth-most amongst active NHL netminders. The 21-save showing earned the Islanders their third shutout of the 2022-23 campaign.
Ilya Sorokin has a 2-1-0 record vs. Arizona. Each of Sorokin’s wins against the Coyotes have been shutouts: he posted a 26-save shutout against the Coyotes when the Islanders last visited them on October 23, 2021, and a 17-save shutout when he faced them on January 21.

53

Islanders forward Casey Cizikas has recorded two goals in his last three games. He scored his first goal of the season in his 28th game of the year on Friday, to help the Islanders earn a 6-4 win over the New Jersey Devils. He scored again on Tuesday in Boston, tying the game in the third period to help the Islanders earn a point in the shootout. Cizikas enters tonight’s matchup seven goals away from his career 100th, and six games from his career 700th. He can become the fourth active Islander to play 700 games in an Islander sweater, and the 11th in club
history.

SCORING
All 17 of the Islanders’ victories this season have included at least three Islander goal, and their three goals on Tuesday helped them earn a point against Boston. There have been just three instances this year where the Islanders scored three times and did not come away with a win.

ASSISTS LEADER
Mathew Barzal leads the Islanders in assists, with 27 through 30 games this season. Entering tonight’s matchup, Barzal is tied with Josh Morrissey (Winnipeg) for fifth-most assists in the league. The 25-year-old is also tied with Brock Nelson for the team-lead in points, with 30. Amongst Metropolitan Division skaters, only Artemi Panarin (29) has tallied more assists than Barzal so far this season.

NHL Morning Skate – Dec. 16, 2022

0

Sidney Crosby climbed an NHL all-time list, Kris Letang scored for the first time since recovering from a stroke and the Penguins improved to 173-28-11 when the pair plus Evgeni Malkin each find the score sheet.

Connor McDavid reached the 60-point plateau in the fewest games the NHL has witnessed in more than 25 years.

* Standout performances from three young netminders – Jake OettingerCarter Hart and Pyotr Kochetkov – helped each of their clubs earn wins Thursday.

LONGTIME PENGUINS TRIO LEAD CLUB TO SEVENTH STRAIGHT WIN

Kris Letang (1-1—2) scored for the first time since returning to the lineup on Dec. 10 after recovering from a stroke, while his longtime counterparts of Evgeni Malkin (1-1—2) and Sidney Crosby (0-2—2) also skated to multi-point outings as the Penguins improved their all-time record to 173-28-11 when all three find the score sheet (7-0-0 in 2022-23).

* Pittsburgh improved to 7-0-0 in its past seven games, which marks the longest active winning streak, backstopped by Tristan Jarry who made 32 saves to extend his point streak to 12 contests (10-0-2). He became the second Penguins netminder in the past 20 years to reach the dozen mark, joining Marc-Andre Fleury (3x: 14 GP in 2010-11 & 2006-07, 12 GP in 2011-12). Only one goaltender posted a run of as many games last season: Cam Talbot (15 GP w/ MIN; 12-0-3).

* Crosby secured his 225th career multi-assist outing which allowed him to surpass Steve Yzerman for sole possession of 12th place on the NHL’s all-time list. Crosby improved his team-leading totals to 17-23—40 (30 GP) and has now reached the 40-point mark in a season in 30 or fewer games for the ninth time in his career. The only Penguins player to do so more: Mario Lemieux (13x). The Penguins captain is on pace for 46-63—109 in 2022-23.

McDAVID GOES “ZERO TO SIXTY” IN 31 GAMES
Connor McDavid scored yet another highlight-reel goal to boost his season totals to 27-33—60 (31 GP) en route to becoming the first skater to reach the 60-point mark in 2022-23 – just four games after eclipsing the 50-point plateau on Dec. 7.

* McDavid extended his home goal streak to seven games and matched the second-longest run in Oilers history – a feat he also accomplished in 2020-21. The franchise mark is held by Wayne Gretzky, who scored in 10 consecutive home games during the 1981-82 season.

YOUNG GOALTENDERS SHINE BETWEEN THE PIPES
The trio of Jake Oettinger (45 saves), Carter Hart (48 saves) and Pyotr Kochetkov (15 saves), all of whom have yet to celebrate their 25th birthday, backstopped the Stars (18-8-5, 41 points), Flyers (10-14-7, 27 points) and Hurricanes (17-6-6, 40 points) to victory in tightly-contested affairs.

* Oettinger, who turned aside five Alex Ovechkin shots in his pursuit of goal No. 801, has stifled the Capitals in both his appearances against the club this season which includes 72 saves on 73 shots, a 0.50 goals-against average, .986 save percentage and one shutout. The Stars netminder, who improved to 3-0-0 when making 40-plus saves in a regular-season game, stood tall in his 99th career outing.

Hart matched a regular-season career high with 48 saves, a feat he achieved previously this season (Oct. 27). While the Flyers goaltender is the only netminder with multiple 45-plus save performances in 2022-23, he recorded his fourth such outing during the regular season – trailing only Bernie Parent (6 GP) for the most in franchise history.

* Stefan Noesen’s penalty-shot goal stood as the game winnerand Kochetkov helped the Hurricanes halt a Kraken three-goal comeback attempt to improve to 6-0-2 in his past eight appearances – tying the longest point streak by a rookie goaltender in franchise history (also Alex Nedeljkovic: 7-0-1 in 2020-21). The No. 36 pick in the 2019 NHL Draft saw his shutout sequence come to an end with 8:34 remaining in the second period, a stretch lasting 151:26 and besting Jason Muzzatti (130:12 from March 22 – April 6, 1996 w/ HFD) for the longest by a rookie goaltender in Hurricanes/Whalers history.

THOMPSON, BLUES FEATURED ON #NHLSTATS: LIVE UPDATES

Thursday’s edition of #NHLStats: Live Updates featured a number of notes, included a goal and multi-point outing from Tage Thompson, as well as a late game-tying tally from Vladimir Tarasenko.

* Tarasenkoscored a shorthanded goal with 20 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime and help his Blues erase a two-goal deficit in the third period en route to a shootout win. Tarasenko’s tally marked just the 13th time a team scored a game-tying goal while shorthanded in the final 20 seconds – St. Louis now accounts for three of the 13 instances including each of the last two (also Nov. 3, 2021).

* Thompsontallied 1-1—2 to improve his team-leading totals to 24-22—46. Only three Sabres players have more points through 30 games of a season: Pat LaFontaine (1991-92 & 1992-93), Alexander Mogilny (1992-93) and Gilbert Perreault (1974-75).

A PAIR OF HOME STREAKS LOOK TO LENGTHEN IN MINNESOTA ON FRIDAY
Friday’s three-game slate begins with Chicago visiting Minnesota, where the Wild will look to establish the NHL’s longest active home winning streak with their sixth straight victory at Xcel Energy Center, while Kirill Kaprizov (5-11—16 in 10 GP) can match Jason Pominville (11 GP in 2014-15) for the second-longest home point streak in franchise history, behind only Maran Gaborik’s 14-game run in 2007-08.
