2022 Year in Review by #NHLStats

0

As we count down the final days of 2022 – a year that will see the most games in NHL history (1,502 regular season & playoffs combined through Dec. 31) – let’s take a look back on the year it’s been…

Please note, all stats are updated as of games through Dec. 18 and will be updated again on Dec. 31.

800-goal club welcomes third member: Alex Ovechkin made history with a hat trick to hit 800 career goals Dec. 13, making 2022 the third year in NHL history to include a player’s 800th goal as he joined Gordie Howe (1980) and Wayne Gretzky (1994) on the exclusive list. The Capitals captain required the fewest games to go from goal No. 700 to goal No. 800 (162 GP). More information on his historic achievement is available in the latest Ovechkin #NHLStats Pack.

Another 40+ goal year for No. 8: Alex Ovechkin has scored 46 regular-season goals so far in 2022, the 12th time he has tallied 40-plus regular-season goals in a calendar year (the highest such total in NHL history, ahead of Wayne Gretzky & Mike Gartner with 10 apiece). Other 2022 achievements by Ovechkin include overtaking Jaromir Jagr for third place in League history (March 15), passing Gretzky for the most road goals in League history (Nov. 29) and overtaking Howe for the highest goal total by a player with one franchise (Nov. 5).

ICYMI: Here’s what it looks like to score 800 goals…

Colorado reaches mountaintop in 2022: The Avalanche went 39-11-5 (83 points) from Jan. 1 to the start of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, where they posted a dominant 16-4 record to win their third championship in franchise historyCale Makar added a Conn Smythe Trophy to his growing list of NHL achievements, while Joe Sakic was named winner of the Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award.

Champs join elite company with 70 wins this year: The Avalanche have recorded 71 total wins in 2022 (55 regular season, 16 playoffs), which is tied for the ninth-highest combined total (also 2016 Penguins & 1976 Canadiens w/ 71) by an NHL team in one calendar year behind the 2013 Blackhawks (80), 2021 Lightning (73), 2013 Penguins (73), 2021 Golden Knights (72), 2019 Blues (72), 1995 Red Wings (72), 1985 Flyers (72), 1978 Canadiens (72).

All goals, all the time: There have been 8,444 regular-season goals scored across 1,318 games so far in 2022 (including 86 shootout-deciding goals), the highest total in a calendar year in League history. The 6.41 goals per game in 2022 is on pace to be the highest rate in a single calendar year in nearly 30 years (6.84 G/GP in 1993).

Take off those hats: Fans have thrown their hats 111 times overall so far in 2022 (103 regular-season season, 8 playoffs) – the highest total in 30 years (115 in 1992). Only nine years in NHL history have featured more hat tricks, with eight of those occurring during the 1980s: 156 in 1981, 138 in 1988, 126 in 1984, 123 in 1983, 121 in 1985, 121 in 1982, 118 in 1986, 115 in 1992 and 112 in 1980.

50-goal scorers galore: Seven players have scored 50-plus regular-season goals in 2022 (Auston MatthewsJason Robertson, Kirill KaprizovDavid Pastrnak, Connor McDavidLeon Draisaitl Tage Thompson) – the most within a calendar year this millennia. More players have reached the mark in a calendar year just five times: 1993 (9), 1992 (9), 1983 (9), 1989 (8) and 1985 (8). Meanwhile, the NHL has featured 21 or more 40-goal scorers in the regular season (21 in 2022) for the seventh time: 1982 (27), 1993 (26), 1983 (23), 1981 (22), 1988 (21) and 1987 (21).

Down but not out: A total of 607 games were won in a come-from-behind fashion through 2022 with 570 of those coming in the regular season – both totals the most in NHL history. Through the grand total 607 comebacks, fans cheered on 165 multi-goal rallies, were treated to 237 third-period comebacks and saw 59 occur as both a multi-goal, third-period comeback. The 2022 Stanley Cup Champion Avalanche led the playoffs with 10 comebacks wins, tied for the most in a playoff year in NHL history, and became the first team in NHL history to trail in all four of their series-clinching wins

California dreamin’ goal scorers: The top two regular-season goal scorers so far in 2022 were born in California:  Auston Matthews (56)and Jason Robertson (54; t-2nd). Matthews grew up in Arizona and Robertson played minor hockey in the Golden State until he was 10 years old. It is on track to mark the fifth calendar year in NHL history to feature a U.S.-born player lead in regular-season goals and the second straight (also Matthews in 2021). The others: 1992 (Pat LaFontaine), 1998 (John LeClair), 2014 (Joe Pavelski).

2022-23 Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy winner: Matthews scored 40 goals in his first 46 regular-season games of 2022 en route to becoming the first U.S.-born player in League history to tally 60 in a season (April 26). He has 56 overall to date this year and owns a goal-per-game pace that sits atop the NHL (tied).

47-spot improvement on NHL’s goal list: Robertson is on pace to conclude 2022 second in regular-season goals among all players, a drastic improvement over 2021 when he finished in a tie for 49th overall. In the past 30 years, just six other players age 23 or younger have scored as many goals as Robertson (54) in a calendar year: Alex Ovechkin (2x), Steven StamkosSidney CrosbyJaromir Jagr, Teemu Selanne and Pavel Bure.

Two big years, two big splashes: Matthew Tkachuk and Johnny Gaudreau, who currently sit in the top three of regular-season points among all players in 2022, have the second- and third- most points in any calendar year by a U.S.-born player in NHL history behind only Pat LaFontaine who tallied 61-79—140 in 1992. The once-teammates also made big splash in the 2022 offseason as Tkachuk was part of a blockbuster trade and Gaudreau signed with the Blue Jackets as one of the biggest free agent signings.

Another year full of offensive output for McDavid: Oilers captain Connor McDavid is on pace to lead all players in regular-season points in 2022 for the second straight year after he led all players in playoff scoring despite being eliminated in the Conference Finals.

Did someone say 1.71 points per game? Connor McDavid is producing at a rate of 1.71 points per game (regular season & playoffs combined) for the second straight year after a 1.77 clip in 2021. The last player not named McDavid to own a points per game rate of 1.70 or higher was in 1999 (Jaromir Jagr at 1.76 P/GP). In fact, the last player to produce at a rate of 1.70 or higher in consecutive years was Mario Lemieux (1.72 P/GP in 1996 & 2.69 P/GP in 1995).

NHL stages three outdoor games in 2022: The calendar year opened with the Winter Classic at Target Field in Minneapolis between the Blues and Wild – the first NHL outdoor game in front of fans in more than 22 months. Two other outdoor showdowns took place, with the Lightning and Predators meeting in the Stadium Series at Nissan Stadium in Nashville (Feb. 26) and Maple Leafs challenging the Sabres for the Heritage Classic at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton (March 13). Two more open-air contests are slated for the first half of 2023, starting with the 2023 Discover NHL Winter Classic.

2022-23 NHL season opens in Prague: The Predators and Sharks opened the campaign by contesting an NHL Global Series back-to-back at O2 Arena in Prague, Czechia, the League’s first regular-season games played overseas since 2019. Colorado and Columbus also clashed in a doubleheader at Nokia Arena in Tampere, Finland, less than a month later.

A milestone year: 14 players skated in their 1,000-game milestone in 2022 – the last calendar year to feature more players celebrate this achievement was 2009 (16 players). Of note, Sam Gagner (WPG) & Alexander Edler (LAK) are both five games shy of the mark.

Keepin’ it 1,000: Three players reached 1,000 career points in 2022, all of whom happened to do so with one franchise: Nicklas BackstromPatrice Bergeron and Steven Stamkos.

Multiple record book changes under NHL “Ironman”: After 36 years of Doug Jarvis holding the record for the NHL’s “Ironman”, 2022 saw two players take sole possession of the most consecutive games played with Keith Yandle taking over the record on Jan. 25 and passing it to Phil Kessel on Oct. 25. Kessel also became the first player in NHL history to skate in 1,000 consecutive games.

Atop The Teams: Over 44% of teams (14/32) have been led in scoring by a player aged 25 or younger in 2022, with none of these players celebrating their birthday by Dec. 31: Anaheim (Troy Terry: 25), Arizona (Clayton Keller: 24), Buffalo (Tage Thompson: 25), Carolina (Andrei Svechnikov: 22), Columbus (Patrik Laine: 24), Dallas (Jason Robertson: 23), Edmonton (Connor McDavid: 25), Minnesota (Kirill Kaprizov: 25), Montreal (Nick Suzuki: 23), New Jersey (Jack Hughes: 21), Ottawa (Brady Tkachuk: 23), Philadelphia (Travis Konecny: 25), St. Louis (Robert Thomas: 23), Toronto (Mitchell Marner: 25) and Vancouver (Elias Pettersson: 24).

Parity is the name of the game in the NHL: A total of 29 of 32 teams have held a playoff spot in 2022 (min. 10 GP). As of games played through Dec. 18, 22 of 32 teams (68.75%) are above .500-point percentage.

Save it for Igor: Call it a breakout year for Igor Shesterkin, who became the third Rangers goaltender to win the Vezina Trophy and concluded the calendar year with the most regular-season wins among all goaltenders, tied for second in shutouts behind Darcy Kuemper and with the highest save percentage (min. 10 GP).

Red hot finish: On Jan 1, 2022, three months into the 2021-22 season, the Devils had 29 points to rank seventh in the Metropolitan Division and 25th in the League. Fast forward nearly 12 months and New Jersey has 44 points so far in 2022-23 to sit atop its division and third in the NHL. The club was propelled by a 13-game winning streak, which tied the longest run-in franchise history; their longest win streak in 2021-22 was three straight victories.

News on Hughes: Jack Hughes is on pace to lead all Devils players in goals and points through 2022. Hughes became the fourth player in NHL history to lead their team in points during a winning streak of at least 10 games at age 21 or younger. The others:  Stephane RicherTyler Seguin and Aleksander Barkov.

Unprecedented Year for Women in the Game: 2022 was a monumental year of change to the landscape of hockey, one that saw multiple teams name their first female assistant general manager, scouts and player development roles be filled, along with a full-time member of the coaching staff. Prior to 2022, no woman had held the role of assistant general manager, now there are six: Emilie Castonguay (VAN), Cammi Granato (VAN), Meghan Hunter (CHI), Dr. Hayley Wickenheiser (TOR), Kate Madigan (NJD) and Alexandra Mandrycky (SEA). Full details of a year that features more women in hockey operations than ever before can be found here.

Jacksonville Jaguars (6-8) at New York Jets (7-7)

Week 16 of the 2022 NFL season gets underway on Thursday, December 22 (8:15 PM ET, Prime Video) as the Jacksonville Jaguars (6-8) visit the New York Jets (7-7) in a pivotal late-season meeting between playoff hopefuls. Each team enters the matchup only one game out of the AFC playoff picture. The Jaguars hold the all-time regular-season series advantage, 8-7, but the Jets earned the victory in the most recent meeting, a 26-21 win in Week 16 of the 2021 season. New York quarterback ZACH WILSON (91 rushing yards) and running back MICHAEL CARTER (118) each set career high rushing totals in rushing in that game, including a 52-yard touchdown run by Wilson.

The Jaguars enter Week 16 with back-to-back wins and sit only a game back of Tennessee for first place in the AFC South. Jacksonville is looking to qualify for the postseason for the first time since 2017. Last week, the Jaguars overcame a 17-point deficit in the third quarter to defeat Dallas, 40-34, in overtime. Quarterback TREVOR LAWRENCE led a seven-play drive with just over a minute remaining in the fourth quarter to set up the game-tying 48-yard field goal by RILEY PATTERSON as time expired. In overtime, safety RAYSHAWN JENKINS recorded the game-winning 52-yard interception-return touchdown – his second interception of the game – to mark the seventh-longest game-winning interception return for a touchdown in overtime since regular-season overtime was instituted in 1974. Jenkins also led the team with a career-high 18 tackles, the most tackles in a game by a player with multiple interceptions since 1991.

Lawrence totaled 318 passing yards and a career-high four touchdown passes in the victory, his second consecutive game with at least 300 passing yards and three touchdown passes. Over his past six games, the second-year quarterback has 15 touchdowns (14 passing, one rushing) against one interception with a 111.2 passer rating, the highest passer rating among qualified passers in the NFL since Week 9. Running back TRAVIS ETIENNE led the team with 127 scrimmage yards (103 rushing, 24 receiving) last week and needs 83 rushing yards on Thursday to become the fifth player in franchise history to record 1,000 rushing yards in a season. Wide receiver CHRISTIAN KIRK aims for his fourth in a row with at least five catches and has over 90 receiving yards in two of his past three games. He needs 34 receiving yards for his first-career 1,000-yard season. Wide receiver ZAY JONES had six catches for 109 yards and a career-high three touchdowns in Week 15 and has a touchdown reception in each of his past two games. Linebacker FOYESADE OLUOKUN enters Thursday with at least 14 tackles in each of his past four games and can become the first player since 2000 with at least 14 tackles in five straight games. He leads the NFL with 156 tackles this season.

The Jets enter Thursday one game back of an AFC Wild Card spot, as the franchise is aiming for its first postseason berth since 2010. Last week, Wilson made his eighth start of the season and totaled 317 passing yards and two touchdown passes, his second-career game with at least 300 passing yards. Running back ZONOVAN KNIGHT has at least 75 scrimmage yards in three of his four career games and is one of three undrafted rookies with over 300 scrimmage yards (321) this season. Wide receiver GARRETT WILSON totaled 98 receiving yards in Week 15, his fourth-consecutive game with at least 75 receiving yards, the longest active streak in the league. Wilson leads all rookies with 67 catches and 966 receiving yards this season, both the most ever by a Jets rookie. Tight end C.J. UZOMAH recorded his third-career game with two touchdown receptions last week. In his last game against Jacksonville (Sept. 30, 2021, with Cincinnati), Uzomah recorded five catches for 95 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensive lineman QUINNEN WILLIAMS leads the team with 11 sacks this season and is the first Jet with at least 11 sacks in a season since 2015 (MUHAMMAD WILKERSON). Linebacker QUINCY WILLIAMS aims for his sixth in a row at home with a tackle for loss. Linebacker C.J. MOSLEY is one of 10 players in the NFL with at least five tackles in 14 games this season. In the teams’ 2021 meeting, Mosley recorded 10 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble. Rookie cornerback SAUCE GARDNER leads the NFL with 16 passes defensed in 2022, while cornerback D.J. REED tied a career high with three passes defensed last week.

Prime Video will stream 15 Thursday Night Football games this season (Weeks 2-17, excluding Thanksgiving). The game will feature Al Michaels, Kirk Herbstreit and Kaylee Hartung on the call.

WHEN THE DANCE IS THROUGH, IT’S ME AND YOU

  • Pavelski leads the NHL in plus-minus (+21) and has finished with a plus or even rating in 29 of 32 games this season.
  • Only once in his 17-year NHL career has he finished a season with a minus rating (-4 in 2018-19 with San Jose; 75 GP).
  • Pavelski (0-3—3) assisted on three of Dallas’ four third-period goals on Dec. 4 vs. Minnesota to match the franchise record for most in a single period – a feat last achieved by Tyler Seguin on April 2, 2022 (0-3—3 in the first period).
  • Pavelski (38 years, 146 days) also became the third player in franchise history (1967-present) to register three points in a period at age 38 or older, joining Dean Prentice (40 years, 65 days) on Dec. 9, 1972 and Sergei Gonchar (39 years, 245 days) on Dec. 14, 2013.
  • He passed Chris Chelios (948) for 12th all-time in points among American skaters with an assist against the Ducks on Dec. 1.

  • Pavelski has eight multi-point games on the season and 44 since joining the Stars in 2019-20.
  • Only two Stars have notched more multi-point games for the franchise than Pavelski over that span: Jason Robertson (51) and Roope Hintz (49).

  • Only six U.S.-born goaltenders in NHL history have recorded more wins prior to their 100th game: Frank Brimsek (66), Ryan Miller (58), Jimmy Howard (57), Brent Johnson (57), Cory Schneider (55) and Jonathan Quick (55).
  • His 45-save performance against Washington on Dec. 15 was one shy of tying his career mark for saves in a regular-season game (46) set Feb. 15 at Colorado (4-1 W).

• Scoring his team-leading 22nd goal on Dec. 17 vs WPG, Bo Horvat is the fourth skater in Canucks history to score at least as many goals in the team’s first 30 games of the season, joining Tony Tanti (22 in ’83-’84), Pavel Bure (25 in ’92-93) and Alexander Mogilny (22 in ’95-’96).
• Horvat is one of eight players to have reached the 20-goal mark so far this season.
• Earlier this season, Horvat became the first player in franchise history to have five multi-goal games in the first 13 games.

MARTY MART AND THE WINNING BUNCH
Collecting his ninth victory of the season on Dec. 14 at CGY, Spencer Martin ranks third in Canucks history for most wins through the first 15 appearances behind Ryan Miller (12 in 2014.15) and Kirk McLean (10 in 1991.92).

BELIEVING IN BRUCE
With the team’s 7-6 OT victory on Dec. 5 vs MTL, the Canucks overcame a 4-0 deficit for only the third time in franchise history to secure a 4-goal comeback win (Jan. 16/73 vs TOR 6-4 W & Oct. 15/71 vs CAL 9-6 W). Coincidentally, Bruce Boudreau also earned his third career win in a game where his team trailed by four-plus goals (Dec. 23/08 w/ WSH & Mar. 31/14 w/ ANA).
• With the team’s 4-3 (SO) victory on Dec. 14 at CGY, Bruce Boudreau surpassed Hal Laycoe for sole possession of 12th place on the Canucks all-time coaches wins list at 45.

It also marked Pettersson’s 20th career 3+ point game, tying him with Stan Smyl (1978-1983) for fifth-most 3+ point games in a player’s first five NHL seasons in franchise history.
• Dec. 7 at San Jose was Pettersson’s team-leading 11th multi-point game (1-1-2) this season and 66th of his career.

PUTTING THE ‘SUDDEN’ IN SUDDEN DEATH
Elias Pettersson’s game-winning overtime goal on Dec. 5 vs MTL came just 13 seconds into OT, making it the fastest goal to start a regular season overtime period in Canucks history. The previous record was held by Dixon Ward who scored 15 seconds into OT on Nov. 29/93.

PRODUCTION LINE

• The Sabres are 3-4-2 in their last 9 games against the Golden Knights; 0-3-1 on the road.

• This is the 10th game all-time between Buffalo and Vegas; Buffalo has a 3-4-2 series record.

• The Sabres are 0-3-1 on the road against the Golden Knights all-time.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW

• A win would also mark the first time Buffalo has earned a victory against Vegas on the road.

• Tage Thompson has recorded 46 points (24+22) in his last 24 games, including 23 (12+11) in his last 10.

• A goal in tonight’s game would give Thompson a four-game goal streak, the longest of his career.

• If Thompson records multiple points in tonight’s game, he will become the 11th NHL skater, and the second Sabres skater (Dylan Cozens, Nov. 30 to Dec. 7), to record multiple points in four or more consecutive games in 2022-23.

• Dylan Cozens has tallied 23 points (7+16) in his last 18 games.

• Rasmus Dahlin has recorded 20 points (3+17) in his last 16 games, including multi-point efforts in each of his last two games.

• In his last 10 games, Jeff Skinner owns 21 points (10+11).

• Tyson Jost is riding a three-game point streak and has tallied three points (1+2) in that span.

• A point in tonight’s game would give Jost the longest point streak of his career.

LINE OF SUCCESSION
• Jeff Skinner (10 multi-point games), Tage Thompson (13 multi-point games) and Alex Tuch (eight multi-point games) have all recorded multiple points in at least eight games in 2022-23.

ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS TAGE

• This season, Thompson tied the mark for the third-most goals scored (24) by a Sabres skater in their first 30 games of a season.

• Alexander Mogilny (30 in 1992-93), Pat LaFontaine (29 in 1991-92) and Thomas Vanek (24 in 2008-09) are the only Sabres skaters who have scored as many or more goals than Thompson in their first 30 games of a season with the Sabres.

• Thompson is one of nine skaters in NHL history who have recorded multiple games of three or more goals and six or more points in a single season.

• Thompson is the second skater in Sabres history to record multiple six-point games in a single season (Pat LaFontaine, 1991-92). He is the only Sabres skater to accomplish the feat within the team’s first 26 games of a season.

• Through Buffalo’s first 31 games, Thompson is on pace for 130 points and would become just the second Sabres skater to record 130 or more points in a single season (Pat LaFontaine, 148 points in 1992-93).

• Thompson is also on pace to score 66 goals in 2022-23, which would make him the second skater in franchise history to score 66 or more goals in a single season.

JINGLE RAS, JINGLE RAS
• Buffalo is 10-1-0 in games in which Rasmus Dahlin records multiple points in 2022-23.

• Dahlin is on pace for 100 points this season, which would shatter Phil Housley’s single-season franchise points record by a Sabres defenseman (81).

• Dahlin would become the first defenseman since Brian Leetch (102 points) in 1991-92 to record 100 or more points in a single season.

• Among NHL defensemen, Dahlin ranked second in points per game (1.23), tied for second in goals (10), second in points (37), first in power-play points (20), tied for second in power-play goals (4), tied for third in assists (27), and third in time on ice per game (26:06).

December 17 – Vegas Golden Knights 2, New York Islanders
The Vegas Golden Knights (22-10-1) were defeated by the New York Islanders (18-13-1) during their return to Vegas on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena. With just one minute remaining in the first period, Anders Lee opened the scoring for the Islanders. Reilly Smith then tied things up at 1-1 with a power play goal one minute into the middle frame. Hudson Fasching responded a few minutes later, putting the Islanders ahead 2-1. Just before the end of the period, Simon Holmstrom extended the Islanders’ lead to 3-1. In the third period, Smith notched his second power-play goal of the game to bring the Golden Knights within one. Brcok Nelson and Zach Parise scored empty-net goals to give the Islanders the 5-2 win.

LAST GAME BY THE NUMBERS

  • Smith’s multi-goal performance was his fourth of the season and second in back-to-back games for the second time this season
  • Vegas drops to 22-10-1 on the season and 8-8-0 at home

Smith on Top
Reilly Smith netted two power play goals on Saturday night against the New York Islanders to take the lead in goals scored by a Vegas player. Smith now owns 16 goals this season and he became the sixth Golden Knight to have two power play goals in a game.

Easy Steph-y
Chandler Stephenson broke his 16-game goal drought after scoring in Vegas’ win over Chicago on Thursday. Stephenson has seven points in the last three games (1-6—7) including his four assists in Winnipeg last Tuesday to tie his career high and the road record for VGK (last Stone 2/23/20). Stephenson leads the club in helpers with 22 on the season (T-10th for NHL forwards) and he is tied for first in overall points on the team with 29 through 33 games. Stephenson’s 62.2 faceoff win percentage ranks second in the NHL among all qualified skaters.

The Shorty King
Reilly Smith netted his fourth shorthanded goal of the season at Chicago on Thursday night, which leads the league. Vegas has the second most shorthanded goals by a team with five this season. Smith’s 12 shorthanded goals since joining Vegas in 2017-18 are the most in franchise history.

Aye-Aye Captain
Mark Stone reached the 500 point milestone last Tuesday when he tallied two goals in Winnipeg. It took Stone 572 games to reach the feat with 191 goals and 309 assists to total the 500 mark. The captain added to his 500 points when he had the primary assist on Stephenson’s goal against Chicago on Thursday. Stone’s multi-goal performance against the Jets was his second of the season and he has eight points in his last 11 games (4-4—4). Stone’s 12 goals are just two off the team lead of 14, and he ranks fourth in scoring for Vegas on the season (12-13—25).
Vegas Golden Knights: Media Notes

Heating Up
Jonathan Marchessault scored back-to-back power play goals against the Jets on Tuesday to give Vegas the third period lead. Marchessault’s power play goals mark the fifth time a VGK player has scored two in a game; he is the only player to have done it twice with the club (last 2/13/20). Both of Marchessault’s goals came in the third period, making him the second Golden Knight to have two man-up tallies in the same period (Paul Stastny 10/13/19). The forward now has six goals in six games, coming off a four game goal streak (Dec. 3-9) that ended on Sunday in a 3-1 decision to Boston. This was the first time of his career that Marchessault had a four-game goal streak.

Martinez Block Party
Golden Knights defenseman Alec Martinez leads the NHL with 123 blocked shots in 33 games and is the first player in the league to reach the century mark this season. Martinez has led the team in blocked shots in 21 of 33 games.

Spreading the Wealth
Eight Golden Knights have recorded 20 or more points this season, which is the most of any team in the league. Jack Eichel and Chandler Stephenson lead the club with 29 points, followed by, Jonathan Marchessault with 26 points and Mark Stone with 25 points.

TEAM NOTES
VISITING THE AVALANCHE
Tonight, the Islanders make their lone visit to Ball Arena this season for their second and final matchup with the Colorado Avalanche. The last time these teams met was October 29, 2022, at UBS Arena. Noah Dobson, Zach Parise, Scott Mayfield, Anthony Beauvillier and Brock Nelson scored five straight goals to help the Islanders mount a three-goal deficit and earn a 5-4 comeback win, their first three-goal comeback win since November 16, 2019. The Islanders’ last visit to Ball Arena was March 1 of last season, a 5-3 decision in Colorado’s favor. Jean-Gabriel Pageau, Ryan Pulock and Kyle Palmieri each scored, while Zach Parise tallied two assists. Parise enters tonight’s game with 46 career points (19 goals, 27 assists) against the Avalanche, leading active Islanders and seventh-most of any active NHLer against Colorado. The 38-year-old scored his third goal of the season the last time these teams met. The Minneapolis, MN native tallied his fourth multi-point game of the season (one goal, one assist) on Saturday to help the Islanders defeat the Vegas Golden Knights.

FIRSTS
Saturday night against Vegas, Islanders forward Simon Holmstrom scored his first career NHL goal in his 11th career game. He became the first Islander since Cole Bardreau (Nov. 5, 2019) to tally the eventual game-winner with his first NHL goal. Holmstrom is the 389th Islander in club history to record a goal, and he is the Islanders’ lone NHL debutante so far this season.

FASCHING
Hudson Fasching scored his second goal in his last four games Saturday night, and the third of his NHL career. Fasching scored his first of the season on December 6 vs. St Louis, ending a 38-game drought. Fasching had not scored since his first NHL goal in his first NHL game, March 26, 2016 vs. the Winnipeg Jets.

200
Islanders forward Brock Nelson became the 20th Islander in club history to record 200 assists in an Islanders sweater on Saturday night. He is the 16th member of his 2010 NHL Draft class to reach the milestone. Nelson, 31, leads the Islanders in goals (15) and points (33), and is second on the team in assists (18). Nelson scored the game-winner the last time the Islanders and Avalanche met, an empty-netter with 1:21 remaining in the third frame. Nelson leads the Islanders in game-winners (5) and is tied with Kyle Connor, Sidney Crosby, Brayden Point and Taylor Hall for second-most GWGs in the league. Five GWGs matches Nelson’s single-season career-high, which he first recorded during the 2019-20 season, and again in 2021-22. A native of Warroad, MN, Nelson is one of only seven NHLers who have not been held scoreless for consecutive games yet this season and the only skater in the Metropolitan Division. In Saturday night’s victory against the Golden Knights, Nelson recorded his eighth multi-point game of the season, including his 15th goal of the season and an assist.

ON THE ROAD
Tonight’s matchup is the fourth in a five-game road trip for the Islanders, the longest in their schedule this season. They are 1-1-1 on the trip so far. Following tonight’s game, they will travel back east to play their division rival New York Rangers on the 22nd on the front end of a back-to-back. Friday, the 23rd, the Islanders return home to host the Florida Panthers before the three day Christmas break. The Islanders enter tonight’s matchup with a 9-7-1 record on the road, and look to earn their tenth road win of the season. Last year, the Islanders did not earn their ninth road win until February 22nd (at Seattle), and they did not earn their tenth road win until February 27th (at Anaheim).

OPENING THE SCORE
The Islanders have opened the score in seven of their last eight victories, dating back to November 14 in Ottawa. This season, they are 12-3-0 when scoring the first goal. Eight of the Islanders’ nine road victories so far this season have seen them score first. Saturday night in Las Vegas, Islanders captain Anders Lee opened the score, with 1:02 remaining in the first frame.

24

Saturday night in Vegas, Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield registered a plus-4 rating, the highest he has recorded in a single contest since October 18, 2018. He is the second Islander to record a plus-4 rating this season, matching Robin Salo’s single-game season-high, set on Oct. 15, 2022 against Anaheim. Scott Mayfield has been the Islanders’ time-on-ice leader in the last ten games (since November 26), logging an average of 21:38 TOI /game.

25

Islanders defenseman Sebastian Aho has recorded a point in each of his last three games, including his career-high third goal of the season on Friday in Arizona. It is the second time in his career he has recorded a point streak of at least three games. A native of Umea, SWE, Aho also has a +6 rating through eight games this month, leading Islanders in that span.

18

Islanders forward Anthony Beauvillier scored his sixth goal of the season Friday night against the Arizona Coyotes. Beauvillier is one goal shy of his career 100th. He would become the 11th player from his 2015 NHL Draft class to reach the milestone. The last time the Islanders and Avalanche met, Beauvillier recorded the go-ahead goal to help the Islanders mount a three-goal deficit in a 5-4 win at UBS Arena. It was the Sorel-Tracy, QC native’s first career goal against Colorado.

DOBSON

Noah Dobson, who leads Islanders defensemen in goals (10) and points (21) has found the back of the net three times in his last six games. Friday night against Arizona, Dobson scored his tenth goal of the season, tying Rasmus Dahlin for second-most amongst all NHL defensemen. Dobson enters tonight’s game seven points shy of his career 100th. Dobson is tied with Anders Lee and Zach Parise for second-most goals on the Islanders, behind Brock Nelson’s 15 tallies. Dobson is also one of just two Islander defensemen in franchise history to record 27 goals before their 23rd birthday (joining Denis Potvin). Dobson is three goals shy of his career-best, 13, set last season.

SEVEN
