NBA Preview: Boston Celtics (26-10) at Denver Nuggets (23-12)

0

The Boston Celtics will attempt to extend a four-game winning streak when they visit the Denver Nuggets on Sunday night in the first game on the 2023 calendar for each team.

Boston ended 2022 with a seven-game homestand in which it dropped the first three games — two to Orlando and one to Indiana — and then won the next four. Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla missed the last two games with corneal abrasions. Damon Stoudamire filled in during Mazzulla’s absence.

Despite committing 20 turnovers, Denver rallied to defeat the Miami Heat 124-119 at home Friday night.

The Nuggets were down by five entering the fourth quarter and trailed 117-115 with two minutes to play. Denver’s Nikola Jokic recorded his eighth triple-double of the season in the victory.

Jokic finished the game with 19 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists. He shot 8 of 15 from the floor and has shot 50 percent or better from the field in his last 26 games.

Denver made 17 of its 28 3-point attempts, a stellar 60.7 percent.

Boston guard Marcus Smart said one of the keys for the Celtics during their four-game winning streak has been remaining focused when things weren’t going their way.

Sunday’s game will be the second meeting between the Celtics and Nuggets this season. Jayson Tatum had 34 points, eight rebounds and five assists when Boston beat Denver 131-112 on Nov. 11. Boston made 16 3-pointers and shot 55.6 percent from the field in that game. Boston’s Jaylen Brown finished with 25 points, eight rebounds and eight assists.

Jokic had 29 points and eight rebounds to lead the Nuggets, which received 17 points and seven rebounds from Aaron Gordon.

NBA Preview: Washington Wizards (16-21) at Milwaukee Bucks (23-12)

0

After a tough road trip, the Milwaukee Bucks are back home and back to winning ways as they welcome the Washington Wizards on Sunday night.

After winning just one of the five games on their season-long road trip, the Bucks returned home and were able to end a four-game losing streak, defeating the nearby Minnesota Timberwolves 123-114 on Friday night.

Giannis Antetokounmpo shined once again, scoring a game-high 43 points on 60.9-percent shooting from the floor along with a whopping 20 rebounds and five assists. Antetokounmpo is just the third player in NBA history to have consecutive games accumulating at least 40 points, 20 rebounds and five assists.

Bobby Portis also stepped up in the absence of Jrue Holiday and Khris Middleton, scoring 22 points and grabbing 14 boards off the bench while new addition Joe Ingles scored 14 points and dished out 10 assists.

Washington ended the 2022 calendar year on a good note, winning their last four games coming into Sunday. They took down the depleted Orlando Magic on the road on Friday night 119-100.

Kristaps Porzingis led the way with 30 points on 9-for-13 shooting as well as 13 rebounds while Kyle Kuzma added 23 points. Seven Wizards players scored in double figures.

On the season Antetokounmpo ranks third in the NBA in points per game at 32.1 while also leading Milwaukee with 11.8 rebounds per game, which ranks fourth in the league. Holiday tops the team with 7.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game and Brook Lopez is atop the NBA in blocks per game with 2.6.

For Washington, Porzingis is averaging 22.2 points, plus a team-best 9.1 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game. Monte Morris leads with 5.4 assists per game and Jordan Goodwin leads with 1.1 steals per contest.

On the injury front, Middleton remains out for Milwaukee with right knee soreness, missing his seventh game in a row on Friday. Holiday as well as George HIll are dealing with non-Covid illnesses. Each player’s status for Sunday night is to be determined.

For Washington, Taj Gibson (groin) and Bradley Beal (hamstring) were not able to play against Orlando. Their status for Sunday is also currently unknown.

These teams have played three-game season series the past three seasons and Milwaukee has won all but one of those nine games. The Bucks lead the all-time series 127-94 and Sunday will be the start of a back-to-back between these Eastern Conference opponents, with both games being played in Milwaukee.

NBA Preview: Sacramento Kings (19-15) at Memphis Grizzlies (22-13)

Double-double czar Domantas Sabonis, Kings visit Grizzlies

One game was agonizing enough for Domantas Sabonis to sit out with a right thumb injury, and his past two performances contributed to two electrifying wins for the Sacramento Kings, who describe the forward as a walking double-double.

Sabonis and the Kings look to usher in 2023 with a third straight win when the surprising Pacific Division leaders visit the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday night.

At 19-15, the Kings are six percentage points ahead of the Los Angeles Clippers for the division lead after getting one-point home wins over the Denver Nuggets and Utah Jazz. Sabonis sat out Tuesday’s 113-106 loss to Denver with an avulsion fracture of his ulnar collateral ligament after being hurt in the fourth quarter against the Washington Wizards on Dec. 23.

In Sacramento’s past two wins, Sabonis continued to rack up double-doubles. On Friday, he totaled 28 points and 11 rebounds for his 12th straight double-double and 25th overall.

Sabonis joined DeMarcus Cousins and LaSalle Thompson as the only players in franchise history with double-doubles in 12 straight games or more.

With his 12-for-12 performance from the floor on Friday, Sabonis joined Wilt Chamberlain and Karl Malone as the third player to not miss a shot while tallying at least 12 attempts on multiple occasions. He had previously finished 12-for-12 on Oct. 31, 2018, in a game against the New York Knicks when he was with the Indiana Pacers.

The latest double-double occurred on a night where Kevin Huerter scored a career-high 30 points and hit the game-winning 3-pointer with 9.2 seconds left.

The Kings are 9-6 since a three-game losing streak Nov. 23-28. Before Sabonis notched his latest double-doubles, they had dropped three of four in their six-game homestand.

Since a seven-game winning streak Dec. 2-15, the Grizzlies are 3-4. Memphis posted its second straight double-digit win when it pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 116-101 win over the visiting New Orleans Pelicans on Saturday night.

Memphis is looking to make at least 50 percent of its shots from the field in a third straight game after following up its 50.5 percent showing Thursday in Toronto by making 51.1 percent Saturday. The Grizzlies also held the Pelicans to 35.2 percent and forced CJ McCollum into a 4-of-16 shooting outing after he made 11 3-pointers to beat Philadelphia on Friday night.

Ja Morant scored 32 points Saturday, marking the third time in four games he surpassed at least 30 points. Desmond Bane added 18 points in his fifth game back after missing 17 because of a toe injury and Jaren Jackson Jr. scored 11 of his 17 points in Memphis’ 33-point fourth quarter.

Bane’s minutes are gradually increasing, and he could sit out Sunday while Jackson is expected to play. Morant took a hard fall in the first half Saturday and is expected to play Sunday.

* The Bruins extended their season-opening home point streak to 21 games and will look to continue their run when they host the Penguins for the 2023 Discover NHL Winter Classic on Monday.

* The highest-scoring year in NHL history (regular season, including shootout-deciding goals) was capped off by Alex Ovechkin and Filip Forsberg both netting the final hat tricks of 2022.

* The “Year of the Comeback” had a fitting close, with eight teams earning come-from-behind wins on the final day of 2022.

BRUINS MATCH FRANCHISE RECORD IN FINAL GAME BEFORE WINTER CLASSIC

Next stop: Fenway Park. The Bruins and Penguins officially have their sights set solely on the 2023 Discover NHL Winter Classic after the hosts contested their final game before heading to the “Cathedral of Boston” for the 36th regular-season outdoor game in League history.

* As the home team Monday at Fenway Park, Boston will have a chance to extend its season-opening home point streak. The list below details all season-opening home point streaks of 21-plus games and can include neutral site contests if applicable. However, it should be noted that home/road streaks on Records.NHL.com exclude neutral site games.

REMINDER: An updated version of the #NHLStats Pack for the 2023 Discover NHL Winter Classic is available, as is an Interactive Information Guide.

* As a legacy to the 2023 Discover NHL Winter Classic, the Bruins and the Bruins Foundation, the Red Sox and the Red Sox Foundation, and the NHL will contribute to the Martin Richard Foundation and Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester’s fundraising efforts to build a new, fully-inclusive and accessible Fieldhouse for the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston. Click here for more from NHL.com’s Shawn Roarke.

2023 HERITAGE CLASSIC TO MARK 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF FIRST OUTDOOR GAME

As we count down the hours to the 2023 Discover NHL Winter Classic, more outdoor action is sure to follow in 2023-24 as the NHL announced New Year’s Eve that the Oilers will host the Flames in the 2023 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic at Commonwealth Stadium on Oct. 29. It will be the third regular-season outdoor game for both Edmonton and Calgary.

* The first-ever outdoor “Battle of Alberta” will be staged at the same stadium that hosted the League’s first-ever regular-season outdoor game. The Oilers-Flames showdown in October will come approximately one month before the 20th anniversary of the League’s inaugural regular-season venture outside – the Oilers hosted the Canadiens in -18ºC (0ºF) temperatures at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton on Nov. 22, 2003 for the first Heritage Classic.

THE NHL WAS FEELING 2022

As another year draws to a close, a look back at some of the most impressive #NHLStats from 2022 (plus, stay tuned on New Year’s Day for an updated version of the Year in Review).

Connor McDavid had a 2022 to remember, recording 57-86—143 in 87 games en route to becoming just the fifth player in NHL history to post 140-plus points in a calendar year multiple times after tallying 52-105—157 in 2021. McDavid joined Wayne Gretzky (11x), Phil Esposito (3x), Mario Lemieux (3x) and Jaromir Jagr (2x).

* 2022 was a monumental year in terms of production from U.S.-born players as Matthew Tkachuk (46-75—121), Johnny Gaudreau (38-81—119) and Auston Matthews (58-57—115) all finished among the top four for regular-season points in a calendar year by skaters born south of the 49th parallel, trailing only Pat LaFontaine in 1992 (61-79—140). Gaudreau finished one back of the most assists in a calendar year by a U.S.-born player, a mark set by Craig Janney (82) in 1992.

Alex Ovechkin (3-0—3) and Filip Forsberg (3-0—3) scored the final hat tricks of the calendar year, boosting 2022’s goals-per-game rate to 6.4 – the highest in a single calendar year in 28 years (6.4 G/GP in 1994). Ovechkin recorded his 30th career hat trick and became just the sixth player in NHL history to do so, joining Wayne Gretzky (50), Mario Lemieux (40), Mike Bossy (39), Brett Hull (33) and Phil Esposito (32).

* Eight players scored 50-plus regular-season goals in 2022 (Auston MatthewsConnor McDavidDavid Pastrnak, Jason Robertson, Kirill KaprizovTage Thompson, Leon Draisaitl Alex Ovechkin) – tied for the second most in a calendar year (also 8 in 1989 & 1985). More players have reached the mark in a calendar year just three times: 1993 (9), 1992 (9) and 1983 (9).

* Connor McDavid (86), Johnny Gaudreau (81), Nikita Kucherov (81) and Artemi Panarin (80) each posted 80-plus regular-season assists in 2022, marking just the second calendar year in NHL history to feature four players with at least that many. The other year was 1982, when Wayne Gretzky (127), Denis Savard (91), Peter Stastny (82) and Mike Bossy (81) accomplished the feat.

Roman Josi (21-74—95 in 85 GP), who collected an assist Saturday, became the sixth different defenseman in NHL history and the first in the past 31 years to post 95 or more regular-season points in a calendar year – the last blueliner to do so was Boston’s Ray Bourque (28-75—103 in 78 GP).

Jake Oettinger earned his 40th regular-season victory of 2022 – the most among all goaltenders – and became the fifth netminder in NHL history to record as many wins in a calendar year before age 25, joining Terry Sawchuk (44 in 1951 w/ DET), Jonathan Quick (40 in 2009 w/ LAK), Mike Liut (40 in 1980 w/ STL) and Roger Crozier (40 in 1965 w/ DET).

* The NHL continued its trend of competitive balance, with 2022 featuring 799 games – including nine on Saturday – decided by a margin of one goal or two-plus with an empty netter (regular season & playoffs). That number trails only 2021 (807) and 2013 (805) for the most such contests in a single calendar year.

* It truly was the “Year of the Comeback” as a total of 648 games ended as comeback wins (611 regular-season, 37 playoffs) – the most in a calendar year in League history. That total includes 178 multi-goal rallies, 254 third-period comebacks and 63 wins in which a team trailed by multiple goals in the third period (all the highest such totals in League history).

* The Blackhawks are set to contest their 50th game on Jan. 1, which will make them the second franchise in League history to play as many games on New Year’s Day. The Bruins, who are set to host the League’s 36th regular-season outdoor game on Jan. 2, top that list – which has the Original Six clubs holding each of the top six spots (BOS: 51 GP; CHI: 50 GP; TOR: 45 GP; MTL: 35 GP; NYR: 33 GP; DET: 30 GP; all inclusive of Jan. 1, 2023).

* Seven of the teams in action on New Year’s Day 2023 also played exactly one year ago, but for the Devils and Sharks it has been a dozen years since they skated on Jan. 1. The Hurricanes’ victory a year ago saw the club rally from a 4-0 deficit to win, marking the second comeback victory in franchise history from a deficit of four-plus goals (also Jan. 19, 1989 as the Whalers).
