ShoBox: The New Generation to feature six undefeated fighters in tripleheader event on January 20

Legendary Trainers Buddy McGirt and Ronnie Shields Will Guide Young Undefeated Prospects Sean Hemphill and David Stevens in Main Event of the Popular Prospect Series from Bethlehem, Pa.

NEW YORK –  Two former Trainers of the Year will lead their young and undefeated fighters into the first SHOBOX: The New Generation card of 2023 as James “Buddy” McGirt’s promising super middleweight prospect Sean Hemphill faces off against Ronnie Shields-trained prodigy David Stevens in a tripleheader set for Friday, January 20 at 9 p.m. ET/PT live on SHOWTIME from Wind Creek Casino in Bethlehem, Pa.

The three undefeated matchups include fighters with a combined record of 61-0-1 and 43 knockouts. This marks the second consecutive year SHOBOX® will open the new year featuring a tripleheader in which all six fighters enter fight night without a loss.

Four of the six fighters hail from the state of Pennsylvania with Hemphill (14-0, 8 KOs) of New Orleans, La., set to make his highly anticipated SHOBOX debut when he faces nearby Reading native, Stevens (11-0, 8 KOs), in an eight-round super middleweight bout. In the co-main event, Atif Oberlton (7-0, 6 KOs) of Philadelphia takes on Artem Brusov (12-0, 11 KOs) of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in an eight-round light heavyweight bout. The telecast opener pits two up-and-coming Pennsylvania fighters as Reading’s Julian Gonzalez (8-0-1, 8 KOs) and Rosalindo Morales (9-0, 2 KOs), from Ellwood City, put their unbeaten streaks to the test in an eight-round super featherweight bout.

In 2002, McGirt – who worked the corner for such greats as Arturo Gatti, Antonio Tarver, Hasim Rahman and Sergey Kovalev – was named the Boxing Writers Association of America Trainer of the Year. A year later, in 2003, Shields – who has previously worked with such greats as Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield – was named Trainer of the Year by the World Boxing Hall of Fame.

The 27-year-old Hemphill was all set to make his SHOBOX debut last February against Joe George before suffering an injury in training forcing the cancelation of the fight. In October, the Hemphill-Stevens fight was called off as well during fight week because of injury.

The three-fight telecast is promoted by Marshall Kauffman’s Kings Promotions.

“We enter our 22nd year of SHOBOX with a card that features six undefeated boxers who all had solid amateur backgrounds,” said Gordon Hall, executive producer for SHOBOX: The New Generation. “To have two young American standouts in our main event with Sean Hemphill and David Stevens facing each other this young in their careers just shows their yearning to take that step up. It’s the goal and desire of all these young fighters to turn from prospect to contender and we give them that chance and set the stage on SHOBOX.”

Here is more on each of the three bouts:

Hemphill vs. Stevens – Eight-Round Super Middleweight Main Event

Hemphill made his pro debut in 2019 and has already reeled off 14 consecutive wins after a standout amateur career. In his last bout nearly a year ago in January, Hemphill scored an eight-round unanimous decision over Jeyson Minda in front of his hometown New Orleans fans. The 27-year-old known as “Silky” fought three times in 2021, four times in 2020 and six times in 2019. Stevens will be the first undefeated opponent of Hemphill’s career with multiple wins. Hemphill is managed by Adam Glenn, son of the late Jimmy Glenn, who owned the beloved Jimmy’s Corner bar in Midtown Manhattan and was a well-known, iconic figure in boxing circles. Hemphill was a member of Team USA during a stellar amateur career (55-12) that saw him rise to become one of the top light heavyweights in the country. His nickname “Silky” is an amalgamation of his dad’s nickname from his kickboxing days (“Spyder”) and his smooth fighting style – spiders produce silk.

“I am excited for the opportunity to fight on a big platform like SHOWTIME,” Hemphill said. “I have envisioned this for a long time, and it’s unfortunate I wasn’t able to make my SHOBOX debut in 2022. I have been hungrier than ever to display my skills and talent. I don’t know much about Stevens, but I am focused on what I have to do and handling business. A win will elevate me in every way possible. It is going to open people’s eyes and open the door for bigger fights and opportunities.”

Stevens fought three times in 2022. His busy schedule includes a second-round stoppage of Loris Barberio on July 23 and a first-round TKO of veteran Colby Courter on May 28. The 22-year-old Stevens of Reading, Pa., has stopped four of his last five opponents, relying on a polished skillset and aggressive, hard-punching style. He started boxing when he was 11 and went 60-8 in the amateurs. Among his amateur highlights, he is a two-time Junior Olympic gold medalist, a Silver Gloves champion, Ringside champion, USA Boxing Youth national champion and a Youth World Championships qualifier.

“I am excited and anxious and ready to fight and show my talent to the world. When the fight was cancelled, I was disappointed because we could not get another opponent on short notice. I think Hemphill is decent. He is not better than me. A win will elevate me and open more doors for other opportunities. Fighting on SHOBOX is very motivating and it makes me push harder in camp.”

Oberlton vs. Brusov – Eight-Round Light Heavyweight Bout

The 24-year-old Oberlton has picked up three wins in 2022, most recently a second-round TKO over Christian Thomas. An active amateur, Oberlton competed in approximately 100 amateur fights where he won many tournaments, including the U.S. National Junior Olympics and was a two-time National Golden Gloves champion. Oberlton placed second at the United States Olympic Trials and was a favorite to be part of the Olympic team in 2020 before deciding to turn pro instead.

“This is a great opportunity that I’ve been waiting for,” Oberlton said. “I am just ready to go in there and prove myself. This is more about what I do rather than what he can do. This will be my official launch to ascend into the light heavyweight division.”

The 31-year-old Brusov is a native of Russia currently training in South Florida. He made his United States debut in late 2021 making fast work of Courtney McCleave with a first-round TKO in Myrtle Beach, S.C. He had a 101-22 amateur record and received bronze, silver and gold medals in national and international competitions.

“I am excited, and this is a good fight and opportunity for me,” Brusov said. “I don’t know too much about my opponent. I know he is a tall southpaw, and I am ready to fight to show everyone what I can do in the ring. I know he was a good amateur, but so was I. I will win this fight. SHOBOX is a famous series, and this is a good chance for me to show people who I am.”

Gonzalez vs. Morales – Eight-Round Super Featherweight Bout

Gonzalez, from Reading, Pa., just over 40 miles from Bethlehem, will feel right at home on January 20. The 21-year-old has fought twice at Wind Creek Events Center, scoring first and second-round stoppages. All eight of the power-punching Gonzalez’s wins have come by way of knockout, and each stoppage has come inside of two rounds. Gonzalez fought five times in 2021, the year he turned pro, and most recently scored a second-round TKO over Eric Manriquez on December 10. The lone blemish on Gonzalez’s record is a six-round draw against Cuban prospect Ivan Jimenez. Going by the ring moniker “Gifted”, Gonzalez has sparred with Philadelphia’s unified 122-pound world champion Stephen Fulton Jr.

“This will be my first fight on national television, and I am thankful for this opportunity to showcase my skills to the world and show what I am all about,” Gonzalez said. “Morales is a tough fighter. He is a southpaw, awkward. I don’t think he is anything too special, but he is tough. A win will take me to the next level as people will see the type of skills that I have.”

The 29-year-old Morales was born in San Antonio but currently resides in Ellwood City, just outside of Pittsburgh, Pa. A crafty southpaw, Morales has relied mostly on his boxing ability to build his perfect 9-0 record but has shown off his power with recent back-to-back first-round KOs in March and June of this year. Morales stepped up to eight rounds for the first time in his most recent fight in October, a unanimous decision over 30-fight veteran Jesus Ramon Perez. Morales has two unanimous decision wins over previously undefeated fighters and will look to take another opponent’s ‘0’ on January 20. Morales, a former Marine, won the Pennsylvania Golden Gloves at 141 pounds in 2016 and turned pro the following year.

“This fight has been a long time coming,” said Morales. “I have worked very hard for this, and I look forward to showing off my complete skillset on January 20th. I don’t know much about Gonzalez, but I do know that I plan on taking it to him and getting this win. I have been working hard my whole life for an opportunity like this and getting a win on this platform would mean everything to me.”

International Boxing Hall of Famer Barry Tompkins calls all the blow-by-blow action for SHOBOX with fellow Hall of Famer Steve Farhood joining the team remotely as the unofficial scorer. Former world champion Raul Marquez and veteran combat sports reporter Brian Campbell will serve as ringside expert analysts. The executive producer of SHOBOX: The New Generation is Hall with Richard Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing.

Imperial Boxing Signs Featherweight Emanuel “El Trompo” Moreno to a Multi Year Managerial Deal

Wichita Falls, Texas – Imperial Boxing has signed Wichita Falls native, featherweight Emanuel “El Trompo” Moreno to a multi year managerial deal.

The 18-year-old Emanuel Moreno is a six-ttime National Champion, with an amateur record of 141 wins and only 15 losses.

Moreno started boxing at age six with Coach Mike Zapata. The duo won multiple national titles before Moreno made the jump to the paid ranks in November. In his professional debut, Moreno won a unanimous decision against tough veteran Christian Alejandro Silva in Oklahoma City.

Trifon Petrov of Imperial Boxing is very happy to be able to add Emanuel Moreno to his team.

“Manny is a special talent. He is the full package, from amateur pedigree, to charisma, to fighting style. When Manny Moreno steps in the ring, he keeps you captivated. He has all the tools to become not just a world champion, but one of the best fighters in his generation,” said Petrov.

Moreno was a very sought after fighter, but ultimately he chose to sign with Petrov.

“I had a lot of interest from a lot of other managers, but ultimately Trifon Petrov made a lot of sense for me. The work he’s done with his other fighters speaks enough. I’m very grateful for his belief in me, and with his guidance I am sure that I will reach my dreams in this sport. Being a professional is an exciting challenge for me. I have been perfecting my craft since I was six years old, and it’s time to show the world what I can do. We’ve put in countless hours in the gym, and on the road fighting and being ranked among the top amateur’s in the country. I am now looking forward to the future, competing on the professional level and working my way up to the top of this sport. I have ambitious dreams, and I feel I can achieve them all with Gods favor and in Gods Time. I’m very thankful for my family. My team. My friends and fans who have supported me on this journey. This is only the beginning,” said Moreno.

Emanuel Moreno is expected to be back in action in February.

SUNRISE-BOUND PLAYERS LEAVE THEIR MARK ON GAMES THURSDAY

Several players headed to the 2023 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend at FLA Live Arena in Sunrise, Fla., shone Thursday.

Alex Ovechkin (29-19—48 in 41 GP) scored to move within one marker of tying longtime Capitals forward Mike Gartner (17) for the most 30-goal seasons in NHL history and help Washington extend its road winning streak to a franchise-record seven games. The 32 players named to an All-Star team roster have a combined 4,833 career regular-season goals, with Ovechkin accounting for nearly one-fifth of them.

* Connor McDavid (272-500—772 in 527 GP) tallied two helpers to reach the 500-assist milestone after being named to his sixth career NHL All-Star Game – the same night teammate Leon Draisaitl (276-400—676 in 596 GP) celebrated 400 career helpers. McDavid improved his League-leading point totals to 33-42—75 (40 GP) and became the fourth player in the past 30 years to record 75-plus points through 40 games in season, joining Mario Lemieux (42-62—104 in 1995-96 & 39-65—104 in 1992-93), Jaromir Jagr (35-47—82 in 1995-96) and Pat LaFontaine (26-49—75 in 1992-93).

Sidney Crosby (20-25—45 in 38 GP) found the back of the net in Vegas and became just the second active player to record 15 or more 20-goal seasons, joining Ovechkin(18). Crosby, who is one of six NHL players to capture the All-Star Game MVP, Hart Trophy and Conn Smythe Trophy in his career (also Jean BeliveauBobby OrrWayne GretzkyJoe Sakic &Lemieux), is on pace for his third season with 40-plus goals and seventh with 90 or more points.

Jack Hughes (24-22—46 in 39 GP) had two goals in the Devils’ loss to the Blues to boost his team-leading total to 24 this season. Hughes, one of 14 team leaders in goals named to an All-Star roster (outright or tied), recorded his 41st career multi-point game and tied Brendan Shanahan for the second most by a Devils/Rockies/Scouts skater before age 22 (only Kirk Muller has more w/ 63).

Kevin Hayes (1-2—3) was one of three Flyers players with three or more points (also Morgan Frost & Travis Konecny) as Philadelphia posted a season-high six goals, including five in the middle frame. Hayes (10-25—35 in 38 GP) is one of 16 team leaders in assists named to an All-Star roster (outright or tied).

Matty Beniers buried one of Seattle’s five goals as the Kraken snapped the Maple Leafs’ home point streak at 11 games (8-0-3 dating to Nov. 12, 2022). Beniers was one of two rookies named to an All-Star team roster, with the other one being Golden Knights goaltender Logan Thompson.

Juuse Saros stopped 64 of the Hurricanes’ 67 shots on goal to establish a new single-game franchise record for saves by a Predators goaltender. Saros, who is set to appear in an NHL All-Star Game for the second time in as many years, helped Nashville snap Carolina’s home winning streak at eight contests.

NBA Preview: Atlanta Hawks (18-20) at Los Angeles Lakers (17-21)

0

The Los Angeles Lakers hope to have LeBron James back in the lineup as they seek a second win over the Atlanta Hawks in eight days when the clubs meet in in Southern California on Friday night.

James celebrated his 38th birthday on Dec. 30 in Atlanta with a season-high 47 points in a 130-121 Lakers win.

Not satisfied, the 18-time All-Star had his second-biggest scoring night of the year, a 43-pointer, in a 121-115 win at Charlotte three nights later.

In the process, he became the first 38-year-old since Michael Jordan to score 40 or more in consecutive games.

James’ bid for a 40-plus hat trick was put on hold by what Lakers coach Darvin Ham labeled a “common cold” Wednesday, but that didn’t prevent Los Angeles from tying a season high with its third straight win, 112-109 over the visiting Miami Heat.

Dennis Schroder came up big in James’ absence, putting up 32 points. Supporting-cast members Thomas Bryant, Austin Reaves and Wenyen Gabriel combined for 42 points, prompting Ham to suggest afterward that sometimes having to go without James and Anthony Davis can be beneficial.

Bryant also had a big night in the win at Atlanta when he was the game’s leading rebounder with 17 to complement 19 points in James’ shadow.

The Hawks countered with a balanced attack that featured six players in double figures, led by Trae Young with 29.

Atlanta has since gone on the road, and easily could be 2-0 on a Western swing if not for a game-tying 3-pointer by Klay Thompson — which the NBA later said should have been waved off for traveling — at the end of the first extra session of Golden State’s 143-141 double-overtime win Monday. Again, six Hawks reached double figures in points, all with at least 16.

Five went for 17 or more two nights later when the Hawks finally pulled out a close one, winning 120-117 at Sacramento. John Collins had his second consecutive double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds following a 25-point, 13-point night in San Francisco.

Dejounte Murray, whose late steal secured the win at Sacramento to end a four-game losing streak, insisted afterward that the Hawks are “going in the right direction.”

The Hawks have done exactly that each of the last two seasons against the Lakers, losing the first game against Los Angeles before winning the second matchup.

Atlanta remains without starting center Clint Capela, out with a calf injury. Onyeka Okongwu has played admirably in his place, averaging 14.8 points and 10 rebounds in his last four starts.

NBA Preview: Miami Heat (20-19) at Phoenix Suns (20-19)

0

The Phoenix Suns are sinking fast without Devin Booker and look to stop a four-game skid when they host the Miami Heat on Friday night.

Phoenix is 2-8 without Booker this season, and he will be sidelined about three more weeks after aggravating a groin injury on Dec. 25. He had just returned from a three-game absence due to the initial injury when he left four minutes into the Christmas Day contest.

Booker has missed the last five games for the Suns, who have lost 12 of their past 16 games.

Phoenix has already lost more games (19) this season than it did all last season while recording an NBA-best 64-18 record.

The Suns are back home after a 1-5 road trip that ended with a 90-88 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday. Two nights earlier, Phoenix registered a season-worst point total in a 102-83 loss to the New York Knicks.

The loss to the Cavaliers came when Evan Mobley hit a tiebreaking 14-footer with four seconds left for Cleveland. Mikal Bridges missed a last-second shot for Phoenix.

Phoenix reached the NBA Finals two seasons ago and the Western Conference finals last season. But with the midway point of the season just two games away, the Suns are tied for eighth in the West and looking lost without Booker.

The three-time All-Star guard is averaging a career-best 27.1 points per game and has knocked down 67 3-pointers.

Williams said the squad has to remain positive while pursuing a turnaround.

Miami has the same 20-19 record as the Suns and is also looking to find a groove. The Heat rattled off four straight wins in mid-December and have since split their past eight contests.

The Heat reached the Eastern Conference finals last season but haven’t resembled a championship contender so far this season. Miami sits eighth in the East after Wednesday’s 112-109 loss to a Los Angeles Lakers’ team missing LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

The Heat are 2-2 entering the final of a five-game road trip and center Bam Adebayo has thrived on the excursion.

Adebayo is averaging 28.8 points and has scored 30 or more points in each of the past three games. He had 32 against the Utah Jazz on Saturday, 31 versus the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday and 30 against the Lakers.

Jimmy Butler scored 27 points against the Lakers after having a season-low nine two nights earlier in the win over the Clippers.

The Heat notched a 113-112 victory over the visiting Suns on Nov. 14. Adebayo contributed 30 points and 10 rebounds for Miami, while Booker scored 25 points for Phoenix.

NBA Preview: Cleveland Cavaliers (25-14) at Denver Nuggets (25-13)

0

Donovan Mitchell knows the Denver Nuggets well, engaging in numerous battles with them in his five seasons with the Utah Jazz — most notably an epic seven-game series in the Orlando Bubble in 2020.

Now playing in the Eastern Conference with Cleveland, Mitchell won’t see the Nuggets nearly as often. But the two sides will renew acquaintances Friday night when the Cavaliers travel to Colorado.

Cleveland has won three in a row, and Mitchell made headlines with his 71-point performance in an overtime win against the Chicago Bulls on Monday night. Mitchell scored 13 points in overtime and set the franchise record for points in a game.

Mitchell had a relatively quiet night against Phoenix on Wednesday night, scoring just 20 points. More importantly, however, the Cavaliers got that third straight win. Unlike the shootout against Chicago, the Cavaliers clamped down on defense to squeak out a 90-88 win.

While offense gains most of the news, Cleveland more often wins games the way it did against the Suns — with its defense. The Cavaliers held Phoenix to 39.5 percent shooting and 45 points in the second half to overcome a 10-point deficit.

Cleveland may have a small advantage despite playing at altitude in Denver. The Nuggets played Thursday night and in a late start — albeit at home. Denver was able to rest its regulars a good amount of the game, a 31-point rout of the Los Angeles Clippers.

The only Nuggets starter to play more than 25 minutes was Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who logged 28:59, while Nikola Jokic (24:11), Michael Porter Jr. (22:11) Jamal Murray (21:21) and Aaron Gordon (21:09) conserved their energy.

None of the starters played in the fourth quarter as Denver improved to 15-3 at home.

Denver got another glimpse of what Murray can do when fully healthy. After being held scoreless in the first half at Minnesota before scoring 14 in the second half on Monday, he looked like his 2020 version against Los Angeles.

He scored 13 points in a row in the first quarter to help the Nuggets pull away from the Clippers early. He finished with a game-high 18 points.

Murray has been sitting one game when Denver plays on back-to-back nights, but the blowout win over the Clippers — and no travel — will allow him to play in both games.

As encouraging as Murray’s flurry was Thursday night, it was Porter’s play on defense that made coach Michael Malone most happy. Malone picks a defensive player of the game each night, and he awarded it to Porter on Thursday.

NBA Preview: Los Angeles Clippers (21-19) at Minnesota Timberwolves (18-21)

The Minnesota Timberwolves have an opportunity extend the recent woes of the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday in Minneapolis.

Los Angeles dropped its fourth straight game in the first leg of a back-to-back on Thursday, falling 122-91 to the host Denver Nuggets. The 31-point margin of defeat was the Clippers’ worst of the season.

An 11-of-41 shooting performance (26.8 percent) in the first half doomed Los Angeles against the Nuggets. The Clippers trailed by 38 points before intermission and by as many 43 points in the second half.

If Los Angeles had a positive to take from the blowout loss, it was that the early deficit allowed coach Tyronn Lue to play the starters limited minutes. None exceeded 18:17, and stars Kawhi Leonard and Paul George both sat out the entire second half.

Leonard has been limited since returning to the lineup on Dec. 5 after recovering from an ankle injury. He has yet to play both games of a back-to-back set.

Leonard sat out the Clippers’ Monday loss to the visiting Miami Heat before returning to action in Denver.

The ongoing skid matches Los Angeles’ longest of the season. Prior to the current swoon, the Clippers won 7 of 9, a run that included a 99-88 home victory over Minnesota on Dec. 14. The Timberwolves posted their lowest point total of the season in that contest.

Minnesota comes into the Friday matchup having won two in a row immediately after a six-game losing streak. The Timberwolves downed the visiting Nuggets 124-111 on Monday, then produced another home victory on Wednesday, 113-106 over the Portland Trail Blazers.

Anthony Edwards went for 32 points vs. Portland, his 10th consecutive game scoring at least 23 points and his fifth of at least 30 in that stretch. He has posted at least 29 points in each of his last four games.

Edwards, a third-year player, is averaging career bests across the board with 24.2 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.7 steals per game.

Minnesota needs all the production it can get from its statistical leader with another of the players central to last year’s postseason run, Karl-Anthony Towns, still sidelined due to a calf injury.

Towns hasn’t played since Nov. 28, and the timeline for his return is uncertain.

His absence is part of a roster that Timberwolves coach Chris Finch told reporters last weekend that he planned to “shuffle it up totally.”

That included playing Taurean Prince — out of the lineup since late November due to a shoulder injury — for 21 minutes on Wednesday. Prince responded with 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor.
