Cambridge, Mass. native and 2022 UnitedHealthcare Academy Player of the Year becomes the club’s 10th Homegrown Player signing

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution have signed 18-year-old midfielder Jack Panayotou to a Homegrown Player contract through the 2026 MLS season with an additional one-year club option for 2027. A native of Cambridge, Mass., Panayotou becomes the 10th Homegrown Player signing to join the Revolution’s MLS roster after being named the 2022 UnitedHealthcare Revolution Academy Player of the Year.

Panayotou earned the Academy’s top individual honor after playing a pivotal role in the Under-19s’ run to the 2022 MLS NEXT Cup national championship. The 18-year-old scored a tournament-high six goals, including the game winner in the final on July 3. Panayotou capped off his final Revolution Academy season with a selection to the inaugural 2022 MLS NEXT All-Star Game, in which he recorded the game-winning assist in the 89th minute (Watch Here).

“Jack has made tremendous strides in his development over the last two years and has emerged as one of the top midfielders in his age bracket in the country. His leadership and exceptional play on the field was crucial in helping our Under-19s win the MLS NEXT Cup championship, and he has only continued to grow while at Georgetown,” said Revolution Technical Director Curt Onalfo. “Jack is deserving of this opportunity to take the next step in his journey, and we are excited to continue working with Jack here in New England.”

To date, Panayotou has earned three call-ups to the U.S. Under-19 Men’s Youth National Team, most recently in September where he helped the American squad win the Slovenia Nations Cup. Panayotou returns to New England after playing one NCAA season at Georgetown University. In his freshman season in 2022, Panayotou tied for the team lead with seven goals across 19 appearances.

Panayotou made his professional debut with New England Revolution II on April 3, 2022, and went on to make nine appearances in MLS NEXT Pro. He recorded the fourth brace in team history on April 17 in the team’s 3-2 comeback victory vs. FC Cincinnati 2.

“I’m incredibly honored to sign a Homegrown Player contract with the New England Revolution,” Panayotou said. “Having been with the club since I was at the Under-13 level, this is truly a dream come true. I am thankful to Bruce Arena, Curt Onalfo, and the entire organization for this opportunity, as well as to my Georgetown University family for their support. I am excited to begin my career with my hometown club, continue to develop as a player, and earn my place on this team.”

New York, N.Y., – New York City Football Club (NYCFC) today announced that it has claimed forward Gabriel Segal off waivers.

The Bethesda, Maryland native arrives in New York from FC Köln in Germany after joining from Stanford University. Due to the fact that Segal played at the collegiate level in the U.S., the forward had to be acquired off waivers in order to play for a Major League Soccer (MLS) club.

Sporting Director David Lee said: “We would like to welcome Gabe to New York City Football Club. He is a young, talented, domestic attacker who had an excellent collegiate career at Stanford alongside playing for the United States Youth National Team. We are excited to have the opportunity to continue his development.

“The addition of NYCFC II to our player development pathway allows us to take advantage of these opportunities with the ability to play regular minutes in MLS NEXT Pro competition.”

While in Germany, Segal appeared in 12 matches and provided an assist for FC Köln II. During Segal’s collegiate career with the Cardinals, the forward played in 54 games, scoring 14 goals and five assists, winning a Pac-12 Championship and earning an All-Pac-12 selection during the 20/21 season.

On the international level, Segal has represented the U.S. across the U-18, U-17, U-16 and U-14 levels since January 2015.

23-year-old joins Serbia for international friendlies against the United States

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Revolution goalkeeper Djordje Petrović has been called into the Serbia National Team, his third senior international call-up. Petrović and The Eagles will take on the United States at Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles on Wed., Jan. 25 (10:00 p.m. ET).

Petrović has been capped once by the Serbia National Team, earning his debut in a friendly against the Dominican Republic on Jan. 25, 2021. Petrović started and played 90 minutes in his first international action, registering a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw. Petrović was also named as a substitute for a friendly against Panama on Jan. 29, 2021, and was an unused reserve for Serbia’s UEFA Nations League B clash with Russia on Nov. 18, 2020. Petrović also received call-ups to the Serbia Under-21 side for UEFA U-21 European Championship Qualifying, starting once on Oct. 9, 2020, in a 1-0 win over the Poland U-21s.

Acquired by New England from Serbian side FK Čukarički in April 2022, Petrović excelled in his first season with the Revolution, making 21 starts with seven clean sheets and a 1.29 goals against average. A finalist for both the 2022 Allstate MLS Goalkeeper of the Year and 2022 MLS Newcomer of the Year, Petrović was named Revolution Team MVP and was also voted Revolution Players’ Player of the Year by his teammates. He backstopped New England to four consecutive clean sheets and a 402-minute shutout streak, the second longest in club history and the third best in MLS this season. According to American Soccer Analysis’ advanced metrics, Petrović recorded -10.66 goals prevented (G-xG) and +11.83 goals added (G+) last season, both the highest single-season totals in MLS since the statistics were first tracked in 2013.

Midfielder Justin Haak Re-signs with New York City Football Club

0

New York, N.Y., – Today New York City Football announced that it has re-signed Midfielder Justin Haak to a contract through 2025 with an option for 2026.

The Brooklyn native signed his first professional contract in 2019 as the Club’s third-ever Homegrown player and the first-ever signing from the five boroughs. Since then, the midfielder has made 27 appearances, playing 1,083 minutes for the ‘Boys in Blue,’ across all competitions.

Justin Haak said: “I call New York home and for me to be able to represent this City is truly an honor. It’s always been a goal of mine to continue my development here with the Club that has given me everything. I want to thank Dave and everyone for believing in me. I am proud to continue the rich heritage we are creating here.

“Seeing the success that previous Homegrowns have had here, I believe this is the best place to continue my development. There have been so many leaders in the locker room that have given me advice and have helped me grow. I will continue to work hard to achieve our goals and hope to have more success in the coming years.”

Last season, Haak made a breakthrough into the First Team after a strong performance against FC Dallas and went on to feature in 15 matches in Major League Soccer (MLS), including an appearance in the 2022 Campeones Cup victory. In addition, Haak also suited up for MLS NEXT Pro affiliate, NYCFC II, playing in six matches and scoring a goal for the side.

“I would like to thank all the support our fans have given me since day one. From the Academy all the way through to the First Team they have always had my back, I would like to repay them by bringing them happiness with my performances,” said Haak. “There is a lot of talent in New York City, it’s just about believing in your ability, I am just another example that hard work and sacrifice pays off at this Club.”

Haak was part of the Club’s first-ever Academy team, the U14s in 2015, progressing through the entire pathway, helping the Club claim the Generation adidas Cup and the USDA Championship in 2017 and 2018, respectively.

Sporting Director David Lee said: “Justin is the perfect example of the local talent we have here in the five boroughs. As a Club, we are committed to continuing to identify young talent and giving them all the tools necessary to develop. With Justin being the third Homegrown to sign a new contract, it shows our ability to continually nurture and produce First Team talent from the Tri-state area.

“Justin’s has taken full advantage of his opportunity with his work ethic and performances. We look forward to helping Justin achieve his full potential while contributing to the success of our Club.”

In exchange for INF Miguel Rojas, Marlins receive Dodgers’ No. 15 ranked prospect, who was named a 2022 Organizational All-Star by MiLB.com

MIAMI – The Miami Marlins today acquired Minor League prospect INF Jacob Amaya from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for INF Miguel Rojas. Amaya is listed as the No. 15 prospect in the Dodgers system by MLB Pipeline.

Amaya, 24, was named an MiLB.com Organizational All-Star for the Dodgers in 2022, combining for 17 home runs and 71 RBI in 133 games played between Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Oklahoma City. The native of El Monte, California, owns a .256 batting average and .362 on-base percentage in 463 games played across five professional seasons. Amaya has spent a majority of time at shortstop (327 games), while also appearing at second base (62 games) and third base (six games).

Amaya was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 11th round of the 2017 MLB Draft out of South Hills High School (CA). He was named a Pioneer League Mid-Season All-Star in 2018, his first full Minor League season.

With the addition of Amaya, the Marlins 40-man roster now consists of 40 players.

Red Sox agree to one-year contract with two-time Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today signed right-handed pitcher Corey Kluber to a one-year contract for the 2023 season, with a club option for 2024. To make room for Kluber on the 40-man roster, Boston designated right-handed pitcher Connor Seabold for assignment.

Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Kluber, who resides in Winchester, MA, finished in the top 10 in American League Cy Young Award voting in five consecutive seasons from 2014-18, winning the award in 2014 and 2017 and finishing third in 2016 and 2018. In that five-year span, the right-hander went 83-45 (.648) with a 2.85 ERA (345 ER/1,091.1 IP), a 1.02 WHIP, and 10.13 strikeouts per 9.0 innings, leading the AL in wins, innings pitched, and ERA (min. 500.0 IP). Kluber, 36, was named an All-Star in 2016, 2017, and 2018, earning the win for the AL in 2016.

In a team-leading 31 starts for the Tampa Bay Rays last season, Kluber went 10-10 with a 4.34 ERA (79 ER/164.0 IP), 139 strikeouts, and 21 walks. He threw at least 6.0 innings in 17 of his starts, including 13 in which he allowed two runs or fewer. Among qualified pitchers, Kluber led the majors in fewest walks per 9.0 innings (1.2) and lowest walk rate (3.0%)—both the best marks of his career—while ranking third in strikeout-to-walk ratio (6.62). He issued one or zero walks in each of his final 16 starts (beginning July 6), totaling 72 strikeouts against only eight walks in that time. On July 13, he reached 10 years of Major League service time.

Selected by the San Diego Padres in the fourth round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, Kluber was acquired by Cleveland in July 2010. He spent his first nine Major League seasons with Cleveland, making five consecutive Opening Day starts for the club from 2015-19. In 2019, he was limited to seven starts after being hit with a line drive and suffering a broken right forearm on May 1 at Marlins Park. Acquired by the Texas Rangers in December 2019, Kluber made only one appearance in 2020 due to a right shoulder injury. In 16 starts for the New York Yankees in 2021, he went 5-3 with a 3.83 ERA (34 ER/80.0 IP), including a no-hitter on May 19 against the Rangers.

In 256 career Major League outings (251 starts), Kluber is 113-71 with a 3.31 ERA (584 ER/1,586.2 IP), 1,683 strikeouts, 18 complete games, and eight shutouts. In 10 career Postseason appearances (nine starts), he is 4-4 with a 4.02 ERA (21 ER/47.0 IP). During Cleveland’s 2016 Postseason, he made six starts and went 4-1 with a 1.83 ERA (7 ER/34.1 IP). Three of those six outings were scoreless starts of at least 6.0 innings, including a 7.0-inning performance against the Red Sox in Game 2 of the Division Series.

A native of Birmingham, AL, Kluber graduated in 2004 from Coppell High School in Texas before attending Stetson University in DeLand, FL. He and his wife, Amanda, have two daughters, Kendall and Kennedy, and one son, Camden.
