NBA Preview: Milwaukee Bucks (27-15) at Miami Heat (23-20)

After falling in a close game without their superstar on Thursday night, the Milwaukee Bucks remain in Miami to take on the Heat for the second consecutive game Saturday afternoon.

Despite trailing by 15 early, the Heat were able to pull away for a 108-102 win over the Bucks on Thursday night as Gabe Vincent led the way with a career-high 28 points. Bam Adebayo had 24 points and 12 rebounds while Jimmy Butler had 17 points and 11 rebounds.

The Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo did not play on the second night of a back-to-back after Milwaukee earned a 114-105 victory at Atlanta on Wednesday.

Jrue Holiday led the way for Milwaukee with 24 points and 11 assists. Jevon Carter stepped up off the bench with 18 points and Jordan Nwora had a solid showing, scoring 16 points.

Antetokounmpo is scoring 31.0 points per game, tied for third best in the NBA heading into league play Friday, while also ranking third in the league in rebounds a game with 11.9. Holiday leads the team with 7.2 assists and Brook Lopez is second in the league in blocks with 2.5.

Adebayo has stepped up for the Heat with 21.5 points, 10.0 rebounds and 0.8 blocks per game. Butler scores a team-leading 21.9 points per game, while Kyle Lowry leads the team with 5.6 assists and 1.1 steals.

A number of players on both teams were mere observers Thursday as the Heat was without Lowry (knee), Duncan Robinson (finger) and Tyler Herro (Achilles). Caleb Martin was also unable to go on Thursday with a quad injury in addition to Nikola Jovic (back) and Omer Yurtseven (ankle).

In addition to Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee also was without Grayson Allen and Joe Ingles while playing a second game in two nights. Those absences were in addition to Khris Middleton who remains out with a knee injury. The Bucks’ Serge Ibaka is out for personal reasons and did not travel with the team for this four-game road trip.

Middleton was assigned to the G-league, signaling his return could be close. Middleton has played just seven games this season for the Bucks.

Saturday will be the second of four games between the teams this season. It’s been a back-and-forth series the last few years as the teams split the four-game set last season after the Bucks swept the Heat in the first round of the playoffs in the 2020-21 season.

Sindani receives two-game ban for a first violation

TORONTO – Under the Canadian Football League (CFL) and the CFL Players’ Association’s joint drug policy, Calgary Stampeders wide receiver Richie Sindani has been suspended for two games after testing positive for the banned substances Methandienone and Stanozolol.

Players who test positive or fail to provide a sample face a two-game suspension for a first violation, a nine-game suspension for a second violation, a one-year suspension for a third violation, and a lifetime ban for a fourth violation.

Under the policy, suspended players cannot participate in regular season or post-season games. It is at the Club’s discretion whether to allow players to participate in other team activities, such as training camp, pre-season games, practices and meetings.

All players are subject to mandatory drug testing following a positive result and are required to participate in an assessment and clinical evaluation to determine if additional counseling is needed.The policy mandates a total number of tests equal to the number of players in the CFL. Testing is ongoing and is conducted year-round.

NEW YORK – Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Mikhail Sergachev has been fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for roughing Vancouver Canucks forward Conor Garland during NHL Game No. 667 in Tampa on Thursday, Jan. 12, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

The incident occurred at 19:19 of the third period.

The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

NEW YORK – Arizona Coyotes forward Clayton Keller has been fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for cross-checking Ottawa Senators defenseman Erik Brannstrom during NHL Game No. 672 in Tempe on Thursday, Jan. 12, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

The incident occurred at 11:19 of the first period. Keller was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct for cross-checking.

The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

Mets acquire OF Luis De La Cruz

FLUSHING, N.Y., – The New York Mets announced today that the club has acquired OF Luis De La Cruz from the Baltimore Orioles. De La Cruz is the player to be named later to complete the December 21, 2022 trade involving James McCann.

The 6-2, 190-pounder has appeared in 60 career games with the DSL Orioles and has hit .252 (39-155) with 23 runs, seven doubles, one home run, 19 RBI, three steals with a .405 OBP. The Dominican Republic native was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Orioles in July of 2019.

A’s Agree to Terms with RHP Shintaro Fujinami on One-Year Contract

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Shintaro Fujinami on a one-year contract for the 2023 season, the club announced today.  To clear space on the 40-man roster, the A’s designated right-handed pitcher Tyler Cyr for assignment.

Fujinami was 3-5 with a 3.38 ERA and .240 opponents batting average in 16 games, including 10 starts, for Hanshin in the Japanese Central League last season.  He walked just 21 batters in 66.2 innings for an average of 2.8 walks per nine innings, which was the lowest mark of his career, and struck out 65 for a career best strikeout-to-walk ratio of 3.10.  The 28-year-old right-handed pitcher played 10 seasons for the Tigers and was 57-54 with a 3.41 ERA in 189 career appearances, including 154 starts.  He struck out 1,011 batters in 994.1 innings, an average of 9.15 per nine innings, but walked 459 for a mark of 4.15 per nine innings.

Fujinami was selected by four teams as the first pick of the 2012 NPB draft out of Osaka Toin High School and Hanshin won the rights to sign him.  He made his debut in 2013 at the age of 19 and went 10-6 with a 2.75 ERA in 24 games, including 23 starts.  Fujinami was an All-Star in each of his first four seasons, including 2015 when he went 14-7 with a 2.40 ERA in 28 starts.  He led the Central League in strikeouts (221), complete games (7) and shutouts (4) that year and tied for second in wins.  The hard-throwing native of Osaka combined for a 35-21 record, a 2.86 ERA and 519 strikeouts in 77 games, 76 starts, in his first three seasons but is 22-33 with a 3.97 ERA and 492 strikeouts in 112 games in seven seasons since then.  Fujinami made all but one of his appearances over his first seven seasons as a starter but has 27 starts and 34 relief appearances over the last three years.

Cyr made his Major League debut in 2022, appearing in one game with Philadelphia and 11 with Oakland.  He combined to go 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA and .697 opponents OPS in 12 relief appearances.  The 29-year-old right-hander also pitched in 35 games with Triple-A Lehigh Valley and four with Triple-A Las Vegas and was 2-3 with six saves, a 2.85 ERA and .619 OPS in 39 relief appearances in the minors.

TURNAROUND TEAMS

  • Seven teams qualified for the postseason in 2022 after missing the playoff last season: BALTIMORE, JACKSONVILLE, the LOS ANGELES CHARGERS, MIAMI, MINNESOTA, the NEW YORK GIANTS and SEATTLE.

    Since 1990 – a streak of 33 consecutive seasons – at least four teams have qualified for the playoffs in every season that were not in the postseason the year before. 
  • Two teams won division titles – Jacksonville (AFC South) and Minnesota (NFC North) – after missing the playoffs last season.

    At least two teams have won their divisions the season after missing the playoffs in 19 of the past 20 years. 
  • Jacksonville completed the “worst-to-first” turnaround this season, winning the AFC South after finishing in last place in 2021. 

    At least one team has won its division the season after finishing in or tied for last place in 18 of the past 20 seasons.

NFL and FedEx Announce Candidates for the 20th-Annual FedEx Air and Ground® NFL Players of the Year

A monetary donation in the name of the fan-determined winners will be given as part of the commitment by FedEx to provide more than $100,000 to Historically Black Colleges and Universities throughout the 2022-23 Season

The National Football League and FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) announced today quarterbacks Josh Allen (Buffalo Bills), Joe Burrow (Cincinnati Bengals) and Patrick Mahomes (Kansas City Chiefs) are the finalists for the 2022 FedEx Air NFL Player of the Year honors, while running backs Nick Chubb (Cleveland Browns), Derrick Henry (Tennessee Titans) and Josh Jacobs (Las Vegas Raiders) are the finalists for the 2022 FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Year. 

In the weeks leading up to Super Bowl LVII, fans have the chance to cast their vote for the one quarterback and one running back they feel had the season’s best Air & Ground performances. Today through February 9 at 12:00 a.m. ET, fans can cast their vote for each category at nfl.com/fedex, via a Twitter poll on the @NFL official handle, or the NFL Mobile App.

For 20 years, FedEx has recognized the NFL quarterbacks and running backs voted by fans each week to be delivering the best performances for their fans and teammates each season. You can help celebrate these standout performances by voting for the FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Year.

During the 2022-23 NFL regular season, FedEx worked with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF), the largest organization exclusively representing the Black College community, to identify Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) across the country to receive donations to support needs-based scholarships through the 2023-24 school year. Each week of the regular season, a $2,000 donation was made in the name of the winning quarterback and running back (for a total of $4,000). This season, the six (6) nominees for the FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Year Awards have already raised a combined $16,000.

To celebrate the FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Year, FedEx will donate $20,000 each to the HBCU choice of the winning quarterback and running back. Similar to the regular season donations, the $40,000 donation will help support needs-based scholarships. For the year, more than $100,000 will be granted among select HBCUs to support student scholarships.

FedEx will announce the 2022 FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Year winners at NFL Honors presented by Invisalign, a two-hour primetime awards special to air nationally on Thursday, February 9 from 9-11 p.m. ET (7-9 p.m. MT) on NBC from Symphony Hall in Phoenix, AZ.

A closer look at the FedEx Air NFL Player of the Year finalists: 

  • Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen finished the season tied for second in touchdown passes (35) while recording 4,283 passing yards. Allen had three games with at least four touchdown passes, tied for most in the league, and six games with 300 passing yards, second-most in the NFL this year. He became the sixth player with NFL history with three seasons with at least 4,000 passing yards and 35 touchdown passes.
       
  • Cincinnati quarterback Joe Burrow ranked second in the NFL in completion percentage (68.3), tied for second with a franchise-record 35 touchdown passes and fifth with 4,475 passing yards. He recorded four games with at least 300 passing yards and three touchdown passes, tied for second-most in the league this season. Burrow, who has 11,774 career passing yards and 82 touchdown passes, ranks fourth all-time in passing yards and fifth in touchdown passes among players in their first three seasons.
  • Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes led the NFL in passing yards (a career-high 5,250) and touchdown passes (41) while ranking second in rating with 105.2. He had 10 games with at least 300 yards, the most by a player in a single season since 2020. This marks his second-career season with at least 5,000 passing yards and 40 touchdown passes (2018), joining Drew Brees (2011-12) as the only players ever with two seasons of 5,000 passing yards and 40 touchdown passes.

A closer look at the FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Year finalists: 

  • Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb finished the season ranked third in the league in rushing yards (1,525) and tied for fifth in rushing touchdowns (12). He recorded seven games with at least 100 rushing yards, second-most such games this year. Chubb, who has at least 1,000 rushing yards in each of the past four seasons, became the third player all-time to record at least 950 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns in each of his first five seasons.
  • Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry ranked second in the NFL with 1,538 rushing yards and tied for the second-most rushing touchdowns with 13. His nine games with at least 100 rushing yards were a league-best this season. Henry, who ran for 219 rushing yards in Week 8, now has six career games with at least 200 rushing yards – tied for most such games in NFL history.
  •  Las Vegas Raiders running back Josh Jacobs led the league with a career-high 1,653 rushing yards and tied for fifth with 12 rushing touchdowns. His 229 rushing yards in Week 12 were a single-game league-high during the 2022 season – including the 86-yard touchdown run in overtime, the second-longest overtime rushing touchdown since 1974. Jacobs had five games of at least 125 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown, most in the NFL.
