NBA Preview: Memphis Grizzlies (31-13) at Los Angeles Lakers (20-25)

0

Carrying a franchise-record-tying 11 consecutive victories, the Memphis Grizzlies head to the West Coast on Friday, when they face the Los Angeles Lakers to start a five-game road trip.

The Grizzlies beat the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday, completing a stretch in which they played five of six games at home and are playing some of the best basketball in the NBA. Steven Adams tipped in a Ja Morant miss with 16 seconds remaining for the go-ahead points in the 115-114 decision.

Cleveland could manage only a long 3-point attempt by Darius Garland, which Dillon Brooks blocked with 1 second remaining. Memphis’ Jaren Jackson Jr. also rejected Garland with 27 seconds on the clock before Adams’ tip-in.

Desmond Bane scored 25 points for the Grizzlies, while Morant added 24. Adams had 10 rebounds to go along with his 13 points.

The Grizzlies have scored at least 115 points in every game of the winning streak. They first won 11 games last season from Dec. 26, 2021-Jan. 13, 2022. The current streak started Dec. 29.

The Lakers look like they are in desperate need of a recovery day. They built a five-game winning streak into the start of the new year, then lost three in a row before ending that skid with a 140-132 victory against the Houston Rockets on Monday when LeBron James scored 48 points.

But Wednesday, Los Angeles appeared to run out of gas in a game against the Sacramento Kings that was tied at 108 with 1:10 remaining. The Lakers were outscored 8-3 after that and lost 116-111 despite 32 points from James, who was just 1-for-7 in the fourth quarter.

The 38-year-old has averaged 40.0 points over his last eight games. He now has 38,104 career points, 283 behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the all-time NBA scoring lead.

Yet despite James’ clear effort to dig deep with fellow star Anthony Davis still sidelined with a stress injury to his right foot, the Lakers have lost four of five. The last three defeats have come by a combined 10 points.

In addition to Davis, Lonnie Walker IV has missed 10 games with left knee tendonitis and Austin Reaves has missed seven games with a left hamstring strain.

Friday’s game is the first meeting of the season between the Grizzlies and Lakers, with a game in Memphis set for Feb. 28 and another in Los Angeles on March 7.

NBA Preview: Miami Heat (25-21) at Dallas Mavericks (24-22)

0

The Dallas Mavericks, who have lost five of their past six games, will try to get back on track Friday night when they host the Miami Heat.

Dallas has lost three in a row, including a 130-122 defeat to the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday that left Mavericks coach Jason Kidd upset.

While Dallas has been sinking, Miami has been rising, winning four of its past five games, including a 124-98 road victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday.

One of the keys for the Heat is the play of Jimmy Butler, who has made getting to the foul line an artform.

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said Butler’s ability to draw fouls is especially important on the road, which is where they will be on Friday.

Butler, who uses a lot of pump fakes, leads Miami with 7.9 free throws per game, and he makes 85.0 percent of his foul shots. In a 121-113 loss in Atlanta on Monday, he went 11-for-11 from the line in scoring a game-high 34 points.

Butler often takes a pounding drawing those fouls, and Spoelstra said the proof of that is the ice bags that his star player uses following a typical game.

For the season, Butler leads Miami in points (22.0) and steals (2.0). He ranks second in rebounds (6.3) and assists (5.2).

Miami’s two other keys are center Bam Adebayo (averaging 21.5 points and a team-high 10.1 rebounds) and guard Tyler Herro (20.8 points).

The Heat got starting point guard Kyle Lowry back Wednesday after he had missed four games due to a sore left knee. He had seven points, eight rebounds and four assists in 22 minutes.

The Mavericks are led by forward Luka Doncic, the Western Conference’s Player of the Month for December. In 15 December games, Doncic averaged 35.1 points, 9.3 assists and 8.5 rebounds.

That stands as the highest-scoring month in Mavericks history.

But the Mavericks — who went 11-4 in December — have gone cold in January, winning just three of nine games.

Shooting guard Tim Hardaway Jr. went down on Jan. 14 with an ankle injury and the Mavs lost that game and the two since then. And reserve power forward Maxi Kleber has been out since mid-December with a hamstring injury.

Fortunately for the Mavericks, Dorian Finney-Smith and Josh Green returned Wednesday.

Finney-Smith, who missed 14 games due to a leg injury, had nine points and nine rebounds in 35 minutes. Green, who missed 20 games with an elbow injury, scored nine points in 20 minutes.

NBA Preview: New York Knicks (25-21) at Atlanta Hawks (23-22)

0

During their four-game winning streak, the Atlanta Hawks are beginning to show the expected results from the offseason when they created a powerful backcourt by acquiring Dejounte Murray and pairing him with Trae Young.

The guards appear to be hitting their stride and will test their newfound compatibility Friday when the Hawks host the New York Knicks.

The Knicks, who have lost two straight, are tied for sixth in the Eastern Conference and the Hawks are 1 1/2 games behind them in eighth place.

This will be the third meeting between the teams after they split the first two in New York, with the Knicks winning the most recent contest, 113-89 on Dec. 7 at Madison Square Garden. The final meeting will be Feb. 15 in Atlanta.

The Hawks won their season-long fourth straight game Wednesday, beating the Dallas Mavericks 130-122 on the road. Murray scored 30 points and Young had 18 points and 12 assists.

Murray is averaging 28.3 points over the past three games and 20.6 points for the season. He has led the team in scoring 10 times. Young, who averages 27.1 and has led the team in scoring 27 times, said he’s less interested in padding his statistics and more interested in winning.

Young took a season-low 11 shots against Dallas while his 12 assists were his most since Jan. 2.

New York is coming off a 116-105 loss to Washington on Wednesday, when coach Tom Thibodeau bemoaned the lack of offense.

The Knicks are led by Julius Randle, who averages 24.2 points and 10.7 rebounds. Randle needs 23 points to catch Mark Jackson (5,544) for No. 24 on the Knicks’ all-time scoring list.

New York will be without Mitchell Robinson (7.2 points, 8.9 rebounds), who played only nine minutes against the Wizards before leaving with a fractured thumb. Robinson underwent surgery Thursday and will miss at least three weeks.

His absence would mean a larger role for Isaiah Hartenstein (5.1 points, 6.1 rebounds) and Jericho Sims (3.5 points, 4.2 rebounds).

NBA Preview: New Orleans Pelicans (26-19) at Orlando Magic (16-28)

0

The Orlando Magic will play their first home game in more than two weeks Friday night when they host the New Orleans Pelicans.

The Magic lost to the Denver Nuggets 119-116 on Sunday, leaving them 2-3 on their recent cross-country trip. They hope to fare better in their first game back home than the Pelicans did upon returning from a recent five-game trip.

New Orleans endured its worst defeat of the season Wednesday night, a 124-98 shellacking at the hands of the Miami Heat.

The Pelicans have been mostly competitive in the absence of injured starters Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram and Herbert Jones Jr., but that wasn’t the case against the Heat, who built a 20-point lead in the first quarter and coasted to their biggest margin of victory this season.

New Orleans had no answer for Bam Adebayo, whose 26 points led seven Miami scorers in double figures.

The Magic will be well rested after a five-day break between games. On Sunday, Denver’s Nikola Jokic made a tie-breaking 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds remaining to edge Orlando, but the Magic saw positives in the way they fought back from a 15-point deficit.

On the road trip, Orlando previously won at Golden State, lost in Sacramento, won in Portland and lost to the Jazz in Salt Lake City.

FLUSHING, N.Y., – The New York Mets today announced the club has signed catcher Tomás Nido to a two-year contract.

Nido, 28, was a finalist for the Gold Glove Award after catching a career-high 96 games in 2022, including 86 starts. He recorded five Catcher Framing Runs last season, tied for eighth in the majors and tied for third in the NL.

Originally drafted by the Mets in the eighth round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft, Nido has played six seasons in the majors. The 28-year-old has appeared in 252 games, posting a .220/.257/.323 slashline with 70 runs, 44 extra-base hits and 73 RBI.

Miami Marlins sign two-time All-Star and 2015 World Series champion right-handed pitcher Johnny Cueto

0

MIAMI – The Miami Marlins today signed right-handed pitcher Johnny Cueto to a one-year contract, with a club option for 2024. Cueto is a two-time All-Star, in 2014 with Cincinnati and 2016 with San Francisco, and won a World Series championship with Kansas City in 2015. He finished second in the NL Cy Young Award voting in 2014.

Cueto, 36, made 25 appearances (24 starts) with the Chicago White Sox in 2022, going 8-10 with a 3.35 ERA (158.1 IP/59 ER). The 15-year veteran tossed at least 6.0 innings in 19 of his 24 starts, including four starts of 8.0 innings or more and tossed a complete game on Aug. 4 at Texas – his first since 2016. He posted a 3.5 WAR (wins above replacement) for the Sox.

Cueto has pitched to a 3.44 ERA and a 143-107 record in 355 career appearances (353 starts) across the big leagues with the Cincinnati Reds (2008-15), Kansas City Royals (2015), San Francisco Giants (2016-21), and the Chicago White Sox (2022). He stands as the last pitcher to throw a complete game in the World Series, doing so for the 2015 Kansas City Royals in Game 2 of their championship season.

Born in San Pedro de Marcoris, Dominican Republic, Cueto has posted the third-lowest ERA for a Dominican pitcher (min. 300 starts), behind only Juan Marichal (2.89) and Pedro Martinez (2.93). He led the Majors in strikeouts (243) and innings pitched (243.2) during the 2014 season. Among all active pitchers, he ranks sixth in innings pitched (2,192.2), seventh in wins (143), and 10th in strikeouts (1,812).

As a corresponding move, Miami has designated for assignment LHP Daniel Castano.

The Marlins begin the 2023 regular season on Thursday, March 30, facing the New York Mets at 4:10 p.m. on Opening Day at loanDepot park. Fans can secure their seats now to catch Marlins Baseball this season at Marlins.com/Tickets.
