Glover Teixeira Ready to Get His Championship Belt Back
When he submitted Jan Blachowicz by rear-naked choke in October 2021, Glover Teixeira became the oldest first-time winner in the UFC. Half a year later, the Brazilian grappling expert tried to defend his title for the first time, but it did not go according to his plan.

Even though Teixeira is a 2nd-degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, who used to represent Brazil at men’s submission wrestling competitions in the past, his BJJ/wrestling skills failed him in the fight against Jiri Prochazka. The Czech fighter beat him by his own weapon – he defeated Teixeira with a rear-naked choke submission.

The two were supposed to fight again last fall, but Prochazka suffered a shoulder injury which forced him to vacate the title. As a result, Teixeira got himself a new opponent in the form of Jamahal Hill. Although Hill’s not as celebrated as Prochazka in the MMA universe, the two have a lot of similarities, which is why Teixeira needs to take this fight very seriously.

Can Jamahal Hill Conquer UFC in Brazil?
Jamahal Hill is about to have the toughest fight of his life. He’s coming to Rio de Janeiro as the No. 7 in the UFC Light Heavyweight Rankings, with a pro record of 11-1-1. His record in the UFC is 5-1-1, with his most impressive wins being the ones that happened last year. In February, he defeated Johnny Walker by KO; in August, he won by TKO against Thiago Santos.

Those two wins practically put him against Teixeira in the fight for the vacant championship belt. But this fight is going to be his biggest challenge thus far. Not only is the fight taking place on Teixeira’s turf, but the Brazilian is the kind of fighter Hill doesn’t have too much experience fighting against.

Hill prefers to fight on his feet, throwing hard kicks and punches toward his opponents. His BJJ skills are there just to help him prevent his rivals from achieving too much if they take him down. But even that happens rarely – his takedown defense is 69% at the moment.

Truth be told, he still hasn’t fought against too many takedown masters such as Teixeira, who averages 2.20 takedowns per fight. Of all of Hills’ previous opponents, only Jimmy Crute and Darko Stosic have better numbers than Teixeira.

Boxing Preview: Chris Eubank Jr. (32-2-0, 23 KO’s) vs Liam Smith (32-3-1, 19 KO’s)

Chris Eubank Jr vs Liam Smith is officially on! Get ready for the ultimate New Year’s bash as two of Britain’s best boxers collide on Saturday, January 21st at the AO Arena in Manchester.

In a blockbuster start to 2023, the middleweight rivals go head-to-head in an eagerly anticipated bout live and exclusively in the UK and Republic of Ireland on Sky Sports Box Office.

Smith (32-3-1, 19 KOs) heads into this mouth-watering pay-per-view clash in the form of his life following wins over Jesse Vargas, Anthony Fowler and Roberto Garcia.

And after his winning BOXXER debut in September, Smith immediately set his sights on Eubank Jr as he plots his path to becoming a world champion for a second time.

EUBANK JR VS. SMITH START TIME
Date: Saturday, January 21
Time: 7 p.m. GMT / 8 p.m. CET / 2 p.m. ET
Main event ringwalks (approx): 10 p.m. GMT / 11 p.m. CET / 5 p.m. ET
The card will stream live on DAZN in the U.S., Canada, DACH and Japan.
The fight will take place at the AO Arena in Manchester.
The main card is set to get underway at 7 p.m. GMT / 8 p.m. CET / 2 p.m. ET with the main event ringwalks scheduled for 10 p.m. GMT / 11 p.m. CET / 5 p.m. ET.

Smith, 34, memorably went toe-to-toe with Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in 2016 and comes from a proud, illustrious bloodline of champions including brothers Paul Smith Jr, Stephen Smith and Callum Smith.

Eubank Jr (32-2-0, 23 KOs) is a man whose family name needs no introduction at all. Son of legendary former world champion Chris Eubank, the 33-year-old has successfully carved out his own reputation in the sport.

But in Smith, Eubank Jr faces one the toughest tests of his stellar career. The Brighton-based fighter was a former IBO world title holder and is entering his prime, intent on starting the new year in style.

Eager to step back inside the ropes after his proposed October bout with Conor Benn was postponed, Eubank Jr last fought in February when he comfortably outclassed Liam Williams in Cardiff with an impressive unanimous decision points victory.

Chris Eubank Jr said: “Has he been in there with some good fighters? Yes. Are they on my level? No. He’s a competent fighter, but class beats competence every day of the week. It’s a good opportunity for me to show I’m twice the fighter that he is as well as those he has faced.

“Manchester is an iconic sporting city. It has hosted many legendary fight nights and many memorable fighters have been born there. It’ll be a great performance, and the Eubank name will hopefully become a regular feature whenever the boxing history of Manchester is discussed.”

Liam Smith said: “He’s making a big mistake fighting me. Every time he has stepped up to elite level, he has failed. I am elite and he will fall again on January 21st in Manchester.

“If he was at 60% for the fight that never was against Conor Benn, then he’ll need to be at 160% to be ready to face me, a former world champion, in front of thousands of my fans in the North-West.

Wasserman’s Head of Global Boxing, Kalle Sauerland, said: “Eubank vs Smith is a fight that has been talked about for a very long time. It’s an absolute banger of a boxing bonanza to kick off a huge year for the undisputed superstar of the middleweights Chris Eubank Jr, in a year in which we expect him to take over the division.

“The journey begins in the amazing fight city of Manchester which has been host to so many historic British blockbusters, on January 21 live on Sky Box Office we will witness the next one.”

BOXXER CEO & Founder, Ben Shalom said: “What a way to start the new year. This is the fight that British boxing fans have been calling for.

“There aren’t many bigger names in the sport than Chris Eubank Jr, who many believe is coming into his prime now. This is his biggest fight in recent memory against a truly world class fighter Liam Smith. Liam is proven at world level and in the form of his life. Many will feel that he is the favorite going into this.

“It will be a huge occasion for British boxing and we’re delighted to bring this mouthwatering event to the fans in the iconic fight city of Manchester.”

0

  • 15 players are set to make their first career appearance in an NHL All-Star Game (Metropolitan: 7; Pacific: 4; Atlantic: 2; Central: 2). Five of the eight goaltenders are set to make their All-Star Game debut.
  • For the first time since 2015 and ninth time in League history, three rookies will play in the NHL All-Star Game. Kraken forward Matty Beniers and Golden Knights goaltender Logan Thompson were in the original group of 32 announced Jan. 5 and Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner was voted in by fans.
  • This will be the first NHL All-Star Game to feature multiple rookie goaltenders. A list of all rookie goaltenders to play in the All-Star Game is below.
  • 22 team leaders in points, 20 team leaders in assists and 17 team leaders in goals are represented. Eight players selected lead their club in goals, assists and points.
  • The 44 players selected represent 6,626 goals, 9,861 assists, 16,487 points and 19,705 games (including 34 assists and 1,590 games by goaltenders).
  • 18 of the 44 players selected have won at least one individual NHL Award, with the group accounting for 14 Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophies, 12 Ted Lindsay Awards, 10 Hart Trophies, 9 Art Ross Trophies, 7 Calder Trophies, 5 Conn Smythe Trophies, 4 Norris Trophies, 3 Vezina Trophies and 2 Lady Byng Trophies. Separately, nine players have won the Stanley Cup at least once, for a combined 13 total championships.
  • The 2023 showcase will be the first NHL All-Star Game to feature three head coaches representing a team with whom they are in their first season.
  • Jack Hughes (Orlando, Fla.) will become the first Florida-born player to skate in multiple NHL All-Star Games (also 2022). He and brother Quinn Hughes (2020) are the only Florida-born players ever to skate in the event. Hughes is one of 16 U.S.-born players among the 44 selections for 2023, with Arizona (3) and California (2; tied) carrying the highest representation of any state.

2016 – The last year an NHL All-Star Game featured both a rookie skater and a rookie goaltender. Forward Matty Beniers (SEA) and goaltenders Logan Thompson (VGK) and Stuart Skinner (EDM) all are set to represent the Pacific Division, which will make them the first such combination since forward Dylan Larkin (Atlantic) and goaltender John Gibson (Pacific) seven years ago. Overall, 2023 will be the 12th NHL All-Star Game – and second in the past 40 years – to feature at least one rookie skater and one rookie goaltender.

2015 – The last year an NHL All-Star Game featured at least three rookies, with forwards Johnny Gaudreau and Filip Forsberg joining defenseman Aaron Ekblad on Team Toews at the event in Columbus. This will be the ninth year the event includes at least three rookies, with 2015 (3), 1985 (3), 1980 (3), 1978 (3), 1971 (4), 1956 (5), 1954 (3) and 1949 (3) being the others.

2012 – The last year brothers played on the same team during an NHL All-Star Game, with Brady and Matthew Tkachuk (Atlantic Division) set to be the first to do so since Daniel and Henrik Sedin skated with Team Alfredsson in 2012. Overall, 10 sets of brothers have played with the same team during an NHL All-Star Game.

151 – Number of different players who have skated in an NHL All-Star Game under the 3-on-3 format, which was introduced in 2016 (123 skaters and 28 goaltenders; entering 2023).

41 – Years since an NHL All-Star Game featured both a rookie skater and rookie goaltender on the same All-Star team. Should they all suit up for the Pacific Division on Feb. 4, forward Matty Beniers and goaltenders Logan Thompson and Stuart Skinner would be the first such teammates since Dale Hawerchuk and Grant Fuhr played for the Campbell Conference All-Stars in 1982 at The Capital Centre in Landover, Md.

37 – Age of Alex Ovechkin (Metropolitan; 37 years, 140 days on Feb. 4, 2023), the oldest player among the 44 selections. In 2022, Joe Pavelski (37 years, 209 days) played for the Central Division and became the oldest to skate in an NHL All-Star Game since Jaromir Jagr in 2016 (43 years, 350 days).

25.3 – Average age of the 11-player Atlantic Division roster, the youngest of the four (Pacific: 25.6; Central: 26.0; Metropolitan: 28.1).

23 – Number of hat tricks scored during an NHL All-Star Game – 17 under the 5-on-5 format (60 GP) and six under the 3-on-3 format (18 GP, 20 minutes each).

20 – Age of Matty Beniers (Pacific; 20 years, 91 days on Feb. 4, 2023), the youngest player among the 44 selections. Beniers is set to become the youngest rookie to skate in the event since 2019 when defenseman Miro Heiskanen (19 years, 192 days) and forward Elias Pettersson (20 years, 75 days) represented the Central and Pacific Division, respectively.

16 – Most goals by both teams in an NHL All-Star Game under the 3-on-3 format, achieved by the Metropolitan (10) and Atlantic Division (6) during the second semifinal in 2017 in Los Angeles.

15 – Players among the 44 selections for 2023 who have yet to play in an NHL All-Star Game. In 2022, a total of 21 players skated in their first NHL All-Star Game – the most under the 3-on-3 format and tied for the third-most in any year, excluding the inaugural event in 1947 (25 in 1981, 22 in 2011 and 21 in 1980).

13 – Number of different players to skate in an NHL All-Star Game before their 21st birthday since the 3-on-3 format was introduced in 2016, with at least one represented each year over that span: Auston Matthews (2017 & 2018), Brock Boeser (2018), Aaron Ekblad (2016), Miro Heiskanen (2019), Jack Hughes (2022), Quinn Hughes (2020), Clayton Keller (2019), Patrik Laine (2017), Dylan Larkin (2016), Connor McDavid (2017), Elias Pettersson (2019), Brady Tkachuk (2020) and Zach Werenski (2018).

13 – Most career All-Star points under the 3-on-3 format, a mark held by Connor McDavid. Only 15 players in NHL history have 14+ career All-Star points under any format, with fellow 2023 All-Stars Alex Ovechkin (7-8—15 in 7 appearances) and Johnny Gaudreau (5-9—14 in 6 appearances) among them.

11 – Number of states represented in the 16 U.S.-born players among the 44 selections. Arizona leads with three (Tage Thompson, Matthew Tkachuk & Brady Tkachuk), followed by California (2), Massachusetts (2), Michigan (2), Colorado (1), Florida (1), Minnesota (1), Missouri (1), New Jersey (1), New York (1) and Texas (1).

10 – Most goals by one team in an NHL All-Star Game under the 3-on-3 format, which has occurred five times (most recently by the Pacific Division during the second semifinal in 2020 at Enterprise Center in St. Louis).

9 – Number of Florida-born players who have appeared in an NHL game this season (all skaters, through Jan. 19), including 2023 All-Star forward Jack Hughes (Orlando, Fla.). That is the second-highest total in League history behind the 11 who played in 2021-22 (again, all skaters).

8 – Most career 20-minute games played by any player (skater or goaltender) under the 3-on-3 All-Star format (one or two GP per year), a mark shared by Johnny Gaudreau and Connor McDavid. Both were selected to the 2023 Honda NHL All-Star Game.

7 – Most career All-Star goals under any format by a player named among the 44 selections, with Alex Ovechkin holding that mark (5 at 5-on-5, 2 at 3-on-3). Only 12 other players have as many total All-Star goals in their career, including three active players (Patrick Kane: 9; John Tavares: 8; and Claude Giroux: 8).

7 – Most career games played by a goaltender under the 3-on-3 All-Star format (one or two GP per year), a mark held by Braden Holtby and set to be tied – and maybe surpassed – by 2023 All-Star Andrei Vasilevskiy (6). To date, all goaltenders have played one of two 10-minute periods in each 20-minute game.

6 – Number of players named the 44 selections for 2023 who were either undrafted (Artemi Panarin and Logan Thompson) or picked in the fifth round or later at the NHL Draft (skaters Kirill Kaprizov and Troy Terry, along with goaltenders Connor Hellebuyck and Linus Ullmark).

6 – Most career All-Star goals under the 3-on-3 format, a mark shared by Sidney Crosby and Cam Atkinson.

5 – Most points by a player in one 20-minute game under the 3-on-3 All-Star format; Mathew Barzal and Sidney Crosby each had 2-3—5 for the Metropolitan Division during the 2019 Final at SAP Center in San Jose.

5 – Most years playing in the NHL All-Star Game under the 3-on-3 format, a mark shared by three skaters (Johnny Gaudreau, Connor McDavid & Patrick Kane) and one goaltender (Braden Holtby). McDavid and Gaudreau both are among the 44 selections for 2023.

4 – Most goals by a player in one 20-minute game under the 3-on-3 format, achieved by Tomas Hertl with the Pacific Division during the second semifinal in 2020 at Enterprise Center in St. Louis.

4 – Most assists by a player in one 20-minute game under the 3-on-3 format, first achieved by Connor McDavid with the Pacific Division during the first semifinal in 2018 at Amalie Arena in Tampa and then by Tyler Bertuzzi with the Atlantic Division during the first semifinal in 2020 at Enterprise Center in St. Louis.

3 – Players that have dressed in at least one NHL All-Star Game after playing for a Canadian university. Golden Knights rookie Logan Thompson (Pacific Division), who played for Brock University in 2018-19, is set to become the first goaltender to do so, following forwards Al MacAdam (1976 & 1977 ASG; University of Prince Edward Island), Paul MacLean (1985 ASG; Dalhousie University) and Mike Ridley (1989 ASG; University of Manitoba).

2 – Most NHL All-Star Game titles by a player under the 3-on-3 format (12 skaters & 1 goaltender). Four players among the 44 selections for 2023 are among this group: Sidney Crosby and Johnny Gaudreau of the Metropolitan Division; Connor McDavid of the Pacific Division; and Seth Jones of the Central Division.

0 – Number of NHL All-Star Games to feature multiple rookie goaltenders, with 2023 set to be the first.

Pirates sign Five-Time All-Star Andrew McCutchen to One-Year contract

0

The Pittsburgh Pirates today signed five-time All-Star, four-time Silver Slugger Award-winner and 2013 National League Most Valuable Player Andrew McCutchen to a one-year contract for the 2023 season.

The now Pittsburgh-area resident played each of his first nine seasons (2009-17) in the big leagues with the Pirates after the team selected him 11th overall in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft out of Fort Meade (FL) High School.

McCutchen returns to the Pirates after playing an instrumental role in helping the team return to the playoffs for three straight seasons from 2013-15. During that three-year period, McCutchen emerged as one of the best players in all of Major League Baseball both on and off the field after taking home MVP honors in 2013 while also being presented with the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award in 2015.

“We are thrilled to be able to reunite with Andrew. His return just feels right. It is right for our team, for Andrew and his family, for our fans and for the game of baseball,” said Pirates Chairman, Bob Nutting. “Andrew is a special player and person. It is going to be exciting to again see him take the field wearing 22 in the black and gold.”

The 36-year-old McCutchen ranks among the top 10 leaders in Pirates history in several categories, including fourth in home runs (203), seventh in extra base hits (539), 10th in total bases (2452), ninth in doubles (292) and 14th in games played (1346). McCutchen also ranks seventh all-time in Pirates history in games played (1327) among outfielders.

“Andrew means so much to the Pirates,” said Pirates General Manager Ben Cherington. “His past contribution to the Pirates and Pittsburgh speaks for itself. Most importantly for 2023, we believe Andrew’s on-field skill, work ethic, and experience are a great fit for our team.”

McCutchen played in 134 games during the 2022 season with Milwaukee where he hit .237 with 17 home runs and 69 RBI while collecting his 1000th career RBI on September 23.

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—The Kansas City Royals announced today that they have agreed to terms with 30 international free agents. The 2023 class surpasses last year’s group (28) as the largest international free agent class in franchise history.

“We’re proud of this group and excited to get them all in our system and help them achieve their dreams,” said Royals Sr. Vice President, Assistant General Manager/Major League & International Operations Rene Francisco. “We believe we have a strong mix of high-end pitching talent, athleticism that can play all over the field, and power. I know our great fans will enjoy following their progress.”

Six countries are represented by the players in this class, led by the Dominican Republic (16), Venezuela (8), México (3), Netherlands (1), Nicaragua (1) and South Korea (1). The group features 11 right-handed pitchers, seven outfielders, five catchers, three infielders, three left-handed pitchers and one catcher/infielder.

Among the group of 30 is 18-year-old catcher Hyungchan Um, whose father, Jong-soo, played one season with Atlanta’s High-A affiliate in 2001, making the Um family the first South Korean father-son duo to sign with Major League clubs, according to the Yonhap News Agency in South Korea. Additionally, 16-year-old right-handed pitcher Marwys Jorge, who was the No. 49 prospect on the international Top 50 Prospects list by MLB.com, joins the club. Per MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez, Jorge has trained with 15-year MLB veteran and 2015 World Series champion Edinson Vólquez.

Cubs agree to terms with 1B/OF/DH Trey Mancini on a two-year Major League contract

0

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today agreed to terms with first baseman/outfielder/designated hitter Trey Mancini on a two-year major league contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. To make room for Mancini on the 40-man roster, left-handed pitcher Anthony Kay has been designated for assignment.

Mancini, 30, was a 2017 American League Rookie of the Year finalist, the 2021 A.L. Comeback Player of the Year and a 2022 World Series champion during his six-year major league career with the Orioles (2016-22) and Astros (2022). The right-handed hitter has batted .265 (746-for-2,816) with 144 doubles, 11 triples, 125 home runs, 372 RBI and a .787 OPS in 752 career major league games. He has hit at least 18 home runs in all five of his full major league seasons, including 20-or-more in four (2016-19, 2021).

Mancini won his first career World Series championship in 2022 with the Astros, as he split the campaign between Baltimore and Houston. Combined between the two clubs, he batted .239 (124-for-519) with 23 doubles, one triple, 18 home runs and 63 RBI in 143 games. Mancini was traded to Houston on Aug. 2 as part of a three-team, five-player trade with Tampa Bay.

The six-foot, three-inch Mancini made his major league debut with Baltimore in 2016, becoming the ninth player in Orioles history to homer for his first major league hit and third player in major league history (since 1913) to hit a home run in each of his first three major league starts (Sept. 20-24). During his first full major league season in 2017, he was named an A.L. Rookie of the Year finalist after hitting .293 (159-for-543) with 26 doubles, four triples, 24 home runs and 78 RBI in 147 games.

In 2019, Mancini enjoyed a career year and was named the Orioles’ Most Valuable Player after led the club in doubles (38), home runs (35), RBI (97), extra-base hits (75), total bases (322), on-base percentage (.364), slugging percentage (.535) and OPS (.899). Mancini became the seventh player in Orioles franchise history to record a season of at least 35 doubles and 35 home runs, while being one of six players in the major leagues to accomplish that feat in 2017. From Sept. 16-22, he earned his first career Player of the Week award, going 12-for-26 (.462) with four doubles, two home runs and 10 RBI.

On June 28, 2020, Mancini was placed on the 60-day injured list and missed the entire 2020 season due to recovery from Stage 3 colon cancer surgery. He completed chemotherapy in November of 2020 and was declared cancer free. Prior to the 2021 season, he launched the Trey Mancini Foundation, which works to support those who are facing illness, empowers those suffering from emotional trauma and provides assistance to those experiencing hardship.

A Winter Haven, Fla. native, Mancini graduated from Winter Haven High School (Fla.) and attended the University of Notre Dame. He was selected by Baltimore in the eighth round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft.

Kay, 27, was claimed off waivers from Toronto, Dec. 23, 2022. In parts of four major league seasons with the Blue Jays, he is 4-2 with a 5.48 ERA (43 ER/70.2 IP) in 28 games (seven starts).
