NBA Preview: Philadelphia Sixers (40-21) at Dallas Mavericks (32-31)

0

The Philadelphia 76ers are capable of winning on most nights, even if All-Star Joel Embiid is injured.

That was demonstrated by the Sixers on Wednesday in Miami, and they might have to do it again on Thursday when they play the Dallas Mavericks in the second game of a five-game road trip.

Thursday’s status for Embiid was unknown, but the Sixers are 9-4 without him this season.

Five players scored double-digit points for the 76ers, who defeated the Heat 119-96 despite Embiid’s absence due to left foot soreness.

On Wednesday, Tyrese Maxey led Philadelphia with 27 points and seven assists. Tobias Harris scored 18, and James Harden scored 23 more points.

After two consecutive home defeats to the Boston Celtics and the Heat, the 76ers put on a much better show.

Paul Reed, a deep reserve, had arguably his best game of the season, scoring 16 points, grabbing a career-high 14 rebounds, and preventing two shots. Additionally, Shake Milton contributed 12 points from the bench.

Another crucial factor was the Sixers’ depth.

Rivers has had to adjust as Embiid, Harden, and Maxey have all missed a number of games this season.

Against the Sixers, the Mavericks will attempt to end a two-game losing streak.

With Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving leading the way, Dallas will also attempt to begin winning games. In the five games Doncic and Irving have played together, the team has lost four of them.

On February 6, the Brooklyn Nets acquired Irving.

The Mavericks were defeated by the Indiana Pacers on Tuesday, 124-122, when Irving missed a three-point attempt at the final buzzer.

Irving contributed 16 points, nine assists, and five rebounds, while Doncic had 39 points, eight rebounds, and six assists.

Irving, who has played seven games for the Mavericks and has an average of 24.7 points and 6.9 assists, believes that the wins and chemistry will develop over time.

The Mavericks lost to the Pacers again one game after giving up a 27-point lead in a loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. Clearly, if they want to beat the Sixers, their defense needs to get better.

MBB-FBS: Arizona Wildcats (24-5) at USC Trojans (21-8)

On March 2 at 8:00 p.m., the USC Trojans (21-8, 13-5) will play the Arizona Wildcats (24-5, 13-5) at the Galen Center. The two teams are tied for second place in the Pac-12 standings. Dave Pasch and Bill Walton will be the game’s announcers on ESPN. In its last ten games, USC has won eight.

USC’S STELLAR STRETCH: Over the past four seasons, USC has won a school-record 94 games (22 in 2020, 25 in 2021, 26 in 2022, and 21 in 2023). The school’s record for most consecutive seasons with 20 or more wins is four, breaking the mark set by three consecutive seasons from 2016 to 2018 with 20 or more wins.

WINNING WAYS: USC’s 73 wins over the previous three seasons ranked third among Power 6 basketball programs, behind only Kansas (83 wins) and Baylor (81 wins), which won the NCAA title last year. Additionally, USC ranked 13th out of all Power 6 conference teams with 160 wins over the previous seven seasons.

Enfield has won his 200th title as head coach of the USC program. In his tenth season at USC, Andy Enfield has a record of 204-126. He won his 200th game against Washington on February 4. Enfield’s win total is fourth on USC’s all-time wins list, behind only Forrest Twogood (251 wins), Bob Boyd (216 wins), and Sam Barry (260 wins). Enfield has a record of 245-154, including his two seasons as the head coach at FGCU (2012-13).

Ahead of Arizona, the No. 8/No. The 9 Arizona Wildcats (24-5, 13-5) are coming off a difficult home loss to Arizona State on February 25, when Desmond Cambridge Jr. of the Sun Devils hit a 60-footer at the buzzer. The Wildcats lost 89-88. The Wildcats are led by Azuolas Tubelis, who averages 19.6 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. Five players from Arizona have scored double digits. On January 19, Arizona defeated USC 81-66 in Tucson, Arizona. Arizona leads USC 45-72* in the all-time series (1 win and 1 loss were later vacated due to a NCAA penalty; the original record was 46-73).

Arizona State Sun Devils (20-9, 11-7) on the deck — USC will play the Arizona State Sun Devils (20-9, 11-7) on March 4 at 8:00 p.m. at the Galen Center. Arizona State defeated Arizona 89-88 on February 25 and will play UCLA on March 2 before facing USC. The Sun Devils have won three consecutive games on the road, including four of their last five contests. With a 14.3 scoring average, guard Desmond Cambridge Jr. leads Arizona State. On January 21, USC defeated Arizona State 77-69 in Tempe, Arizona. Arizona State is Arizona State’s last opponent, but USC has won its last six games and is 60-42* ahead of Arizona State in the series history.

LET’S GET STARTED WITH THE DEFENSE: On November 30, USC held California to a 27.7 percent shooting percentage, its lowest mark since holding Stanford to a 25.4 percent shooting percentage on March 3, 2021. On February 9, USC let Oregon make 53.8% of its shots, making it the only team this season to let Oregon make more than 50% of its shots against USC. In 17 of its 29 games this season, USC has limited its opponents to under 40% shooting. This season, USC is holding its opponents to a 38.9 shooting percentage—eighth in the nation. USC’s defense has held opponents to a 2nd-place 38.8 field goal percentage over the past four seasons.

LEADERS OF THE PAC: USC has finished third among Pac-12 teams in wins during the regular season for the past six seasons (since the 2017-18 season). Through games on February 23, USC is 73-39, Arizona is 74-38, and UCLA is 76-35 in that stretch. Oregon at 68-42 and Colorado at 61-52 would be the next two teams.

ENJOYING THE HOME COOKING: USC is 14-1 this season at the Galen Center, losing to FGCU in the season opener on Nov. 7, but winning each of the next 14 games. Since the Trojans won their first 15 games at the Galen Center in the 2015-16 season, USC’s 14-game home winning streak is the longest in a single season. Additionally, it is tied for the third-longest streak of home victories in school history.

PETERSON PROVIDES A LITTLE OF EVERYTHING: Along with Penn State’s Jalen Pickett, guard Drew Peterson is one of two Power 6 conference players averaging at least 13.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game this season. In each game, Peterson is averaging 14.6 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 4.7 assists. He has scored in double figures in 24 games, including a career-high 30 points against Cal on February 16. He also has more than one steal per game on average.

JEKYLL & HYDE FROM AWAY — On Feb. 16, when USC played California, it hit 52.2% of its 3-pointers. This was the school’s highest shooting percentage from beyond the arc since it hit 53.8% when it played Washington State on Feb. 20, 2022. The following game, on Feb. 18 against Stanford, USC hit a season-high 13 3-pointers. USC has made at least 38% from three-point range in 12 games this season. USC has made 46.7 percent of its 3-point attempts in those 12 games (119-for-255), while it has averaged 23.2 percent (65-for-280) from beyond the arc in the other 17 games.

When fully loaded, USC is 8-1 in games where all of its rotational players are available. Five victories over Pac-12 teams in the top six belong to that stretch. Arizona, which is 34-2 in its last 36 home games, was USC’s only loss when the entire roster was available. USC forward Vincent Iwuchukwu missed the first 16 games of the season, while forward guard Joshua Morgan (right ankle) and left foot guard Reese Dixon-Waters missed four games before returning against Stanford on February 18. On February 2, at Washington State, both players suffered injuries.

The Johnson Jump: Kobe Johnson, a sophomore, is leading the nation with 65 steals and averaging 8.8 points and 4.9 rebounds this season. Last year Johnson arrived at the midpoint of 1.2 places and 1.0 bounce back while playing in 27 games. In addition, Johnson ranks fourth on the team in blocks (13) and third in assists (74). He did not score in double figures in his first 35 games until Dec. 4, when he scored 17 points against Oregon State. In 11 of his last 21 games, he has scored at least double digits, averaging 10.1 points per game. His 21 points in the game against Washington on February 4 are his career high. This season, he has had at least five rebounds 16 times. He missed his first seven attempts at the three-point line this season, but he has made 26 of his last 63 attempts, resulting in a 41.3 percent shooting percentage from beyond the arc.

BOOGIE DOWN, BUT NOT FOR LONG Senior guard Boogie Ellis scored nine points on Feb. 11 against Oregon State, snapping a 14-game scoring streak. He then scored 22 points against California on February 16, a career-high 33 points against Stanford on February 18, and 21 points against Colorado on February 23. In the last 18 games, he has scored 344 points on average, including a career-high 31 points against UCLA on January 26. On December 18, he started his streak with a career-high 28 points against Auburn. With a 17.2 scoring average, 71 made three-pointers and 102 made free throws, Ellis leads USC. With 42 steals, he also ranks second among Trojans. He now ranks 17th on USC’s all-time list with 127 made 3-pointers as a Trojan.

Finding their stride: Over the past ten games, USC has hit 47.5 percent of its shots (266-for-560). In that stretch, USC has also made 7.9 three-pointers per game, compared to 5.5 attempts from beyond the arc in the first 19 games.

USC has scored 82.0 points per game over its last four games (328 total) and 81.3 points per game over its last six wins (488 total).

FOUR SCORE: USC has won its last four conference opponents by a combined 79 points, defeating California (97-60) at home on February 16, Stanford (85-75) at home on February 18, Colorado (84-65) on the road on February 23, and Utah (62-49) on the road on February 25. Since beating UCLA (55-22), California (60-32), California (36-26), and UCLA (43-33) by a combined 81 points from February 15 to March 1, 1935, this is USC’s largest margin of victory over conference opponents in four consecutive games. In the 2002 season, USC won four consecutive conference games by a margin of double digits for the first time.

WBB-FCS: East Tennessee State Buccaneers (22-8) at Samford Bulldogs (13-16)

BUCS TOURNAMENT HISTORY

  • ETSU will look to win its first-ever SoCon Championship this season. The Bucs have won three tournament titles all-time — three-peating as a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference (ASUN) in 2008, 2009 and 2010.
  • ETSU has advanced to a championship final nine times — including five as a member of the SoCon in 1984, 1991, 1995, 2015 and most recently in 2018 against Mercer.
  • This will mark ETSU’s 40th appearance in a postseason conference tournament with an all-time record of 31-36 — including a 20-30 record in SoCon tournaments and an 11-6 record in ASUN tournaments.
  • When seeded third or higher, ETSU has an all-time conference tournament record of 24-13. When excluding the ASUN tournaments, ETSU’s record is 13-10.
  • As the No. 3 seed, ETSU has a 7-7 tournament record, including a 5-5 record in SoCon games.
  • When facing a No. 6 seed — regardless of round — ETSU has a 6-3 record.
  • The last time ETSU had a No. 3 seed was in 2017. The Bucs played No. 6 Samford that season and the Bulldogs won 67-64 in a heartbreaker. In that game, former Buccaneer great and Johnson City native Tianna Tarter scored a career-high 39 points.
  • The last time ETSU matched up with Samford in a tournament was in 2021, as the No. 8 Bucs stunned the top-seeded Bulldogs with a 68-61 win in the opening round. Current Buc Jakhyia Davis (Knoxville, Tenn.) had 21 points and five rebounds in that game.
  • ETSU has had 40 all-tournament team selections in its history, including Davis making the second team for the 2021 tournament. Of the group, 27 were first team selections and 13 were placed on second team.
  • Two former Bucs have been named SoCon Tournament MVP, including Nicole Hopson in 1981 and DeShawne Blocker in 1995.

ABOUT THE BUCS

  • ETSU finished the regular season with a 22-8 overall record and a 9-5 mark in league play.
  • The Bucs are tied for second place in the final standings with Chattanooga — one-game back of regular season champion Wofford at 10-4. Due to the head-to-head tiebreaker, ETSU was awarded the No. 3 seed for the postseason tournament.
  • ETSU is one win away from tying the all-time school record for single season wins, set in 2009-10 with a 23-9 record. That season is also tied with two others for the fewest losses in a season all-time (since expanding the schedule to over 15 games in 1974-75).
  • This team and the 2009-10 team are the only two in program history to achieve 22 total wins. The 2009-10 team was also the last to represent ETSU in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament.
  • The Bucs have only reached 21 wins in a single season five times. The first was the historic 1994-95 season, followed by the 2007-08 season and the record-holding 2009-10 season that brought ETSU’s last NCAA tournament appearance. Outside of this season, the other was in 2014-15.
  • Last time out, ETSU ended the regular season with a dramatic 90-84 win in double-overtime at Western Carolina. This marked ETSU’s first and only overtime game all regular season.
  • Three players were named to the SoCon all-conference teams from ETSU. Graduate guard Jiselle Thomas (Norwalk, Ohio) led the way with a first-team selection from both the coaches and media, finishing with 16.7 PPG in conference games and 15.4 PPG in the regular season to rank among the league leaders.
  • Sophomore Kendall Folley (Lebanon, Ohio) — a two-time SoCon Player of the Week — was named to the league’s second team by both the coaches and media, while also earned all-defensive team honors. Folley averaged 14.2 PPG in league play and ranked fourth in field goal percentage (48.2). Defensively, she had 39 steals in the regular season to rank fourth in the conference.
  • True freshman Journee McDaniel (New Bern, N.C.) was named to the SoCon all-freshman team by the SoCon Sports Media Association (SCSMA). McDaniel ranked second behind SoCon Freshman of the Year Raven Thompson among freshman in rebounding, while ranking second on the Bucs with 16 blocks.
  • This season, ETSU had two players earn College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District honors in sophomore guard Courtney Moore (Gainesville, Fla.) and graduate post Jayla Ruffus-Milner (North Hills, Calif.).
  • Leading the nation’s best turnaround this season, first year Buccaneer head coach Brenda Mock Brown was voted by her peers as the SoCon Coach of the Year. Coach Mock also had one of the most storied turnarounds of all-time at UNC Asheville in 2016, improving by 16 games to rank fifth all-time in NCAA D1 Women’s Basketball history. This year, the Bucs went from six wins last season to 22 already this season — a 16-win improvement to lead all of NCAA D1 Women’s Basketball.
  • ETSU has already broken the school record for best win improvement from season-to-season, going from six wins last season to 21 already this season. The 15-win improvement broke the previous school record of 12 set in the 2014-15 season.
  • Two weeks ago, ETSU nailed a school-record 16 made three-pointers in an 83-45 win over Wofford. The previous record of 15 was set back in ETSU’s last NCAA Tournament appearance in 2010 against Xavier. ETSU also netted 15 threes against North Florida in 2006. Entering that night, ETSU was averaging six made threes per game.
  • Since the start of the program in 1968, ETSU has never had a season that brought five separate four-game win streaks (or longer). ETSU enjoyed two four-game win streaks to start 8-2 overall, then had a five-game win streak to improve to 13-3. After a rocky start to SoCon play, ETSU won four in a row to improve to 17-6. The most recent win streak ended last week at four games. The last time ETSU had three win streaks of four or more games was the 2014-15 season that produced a 21-12 overall record.
  • For 10 straight weeks, ETSU either received votes or earned a ranking in the College Insider Women’s Mid-Major Top 25 Poll. That streak ended just this past week, despite the Bucs receiving 27 votes last week.
Entering Thursday night, ETSU was averaging six made threes per game.
  • The Bucs set three more new school records this season, including the fewest points allowed in a game (26) and largest margin of victory (69) against Virginia-Lynchburg. In similar fashion, the Bucs also set a new record for fewest points combined in a gritty 44-31 win over Vanderbilt inside Brooks Gym.
  • The Bucs finished non-conference play with a 13-3 record — the best non-conference finish in modern era program history. That era began when the SoCon began sponsoring a women’s basketball championship in 1983-84 — the same season ETSU finished with 11 non-conference wins.
  • ETSU finished the regular season with the 20th best scoring defense in the nation, allowing just 55.7 PPG. Offensively, ETSU averages 64.0 PPG. Nationally, ETSU is also ranked 30th in offensive rebounds per game (14.2), 32nd in fewest turnovers per game (13.3) and 37th in field goal percentage defense (36.9).
  • As a team, the Bucs lead the SoCon in scoring margin (8.3), blocks per game (3.3), field goal percentage defense and overall winning percentage (73.3).
  • As an individual, Thomas is ranked among the Top 50 players in the nation with an 85.4 free throw percentage (111-130). She is also among the Top 100 leading scorers in the nation with 461 total points.
  • This season, ETSU has secured its first winning campaign since 2018, where the team finished 20-13 overall, 11-3 in the SoCon and made an appearance in the Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT). ETSU has made three NCAA tournament appearances all-time (2008, 2009, 2010) and four WNIT appearances (1995, 2006, 2015, 2018).

ABOUT THE BULLDOGS

  • Samford enters with a 13-16 overall record and a 7-7 record in conference play.
  • The Bulldogs dropped five straight to end the regular season, starting with a 75-63 loss to ETSU in Birmingham.
  • Samford finished the regular season with an 8-5 record at home, a 5-10 record on the road and with a loss in its only neutral site game (against Rhode Island in Orlando, Fla.).
  • The Bulldogs are led by SoCon Media Player of the Year Andrea Bailey — who became a two-time league MVP this season. Bailey was also named to the all-conference first team by both the coaches and media and to the all-defensive team by the coaches. She averaged a league-best 17.7 PPG and 2.89 steals per game.
  • Three other Bulldogs earned all-conference honors, including Sussy Ngulefac on the media’s all-conference third team and both Carly Heidger and Masyn Marchbanks on the all-freshman team.
  • Samford is led by fourth year head coach Carley Kuhns, who came to Samford from her alma mater Valdosta State after three successful years as head coach. She has a career record of 124-87 and an even 58-58 record at Samford.

SERIES HISTORY

  • Samford leads the all-time series, 11-9.
  • Only two of the 20 meetings happened in the postseason — the Samford win in 2017 and the ETSU upset victory in 2021.
  • The 2021 win for ETSU was the first time it had eliminated a top seed since defeating No. 1 Chattanooga in 2005.
  • The season series was split this season with the road team winning each time.

NBA Preview: Los Angeles Clippers (33-31) at Golden State Warriors (32-30)

0

When the Los Angeles Clippers play the Golden State Warriors in San Francisco on Thursday night, two veteran-laden lineups with championship ambitions will face off in a matchup that could have serious implications for the playoffs.

As they get ready for the third game in the four-game season series, the Clippers and Warriors are virtually tied for fifth place in the Western Conference after three straight losses.

The California rivals are now less than one percentage point apart in the standings after splitting their first two meetings, both of which they won at home.

The Clippers currently hold the tiebreaker advantage in division record in the final head-to-head scheduled for March 15 in Los Angeles, should the teams draw 2-2 in the season series.

Stephen Curry has returned to the practice floor in a part-time capacity after missing the last nine games with a partially torn ligament in his lower left leg. The Warriors would like to believe that he will be back for the final matchup.

In Curry’s absence, Klay Thompson has taken Curry’s place in 3-point shooting. The veteran now holds the No. 2nd in the NBA in three-pointers, trailing only Buddy Hield, and hitting 55 shots with a 47 percent accuracy rate over those nine games.

Jordan Poole scored a game-high 29 points and Thompson had 23 in Tuesday’s 123-105 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers at home. However, Draymond Green’s return, which resulted in the victory with 12 points, nine rebounds, eight assists, two steals, and two blocks, was the night’s biggest news.

Green had injured his right knee and missed the previous two games.

Tyronn Lue, the Clippers’ head coach, wishes he could say the same. The new team, which includes Russell Westbrook, Eric Gordon, Mason Plumlee, and Bones Hyland—all of whom joined the team in February—had already suffered two crushing defeats, suffering double-overtime losses to the Sacramento Kings and Denver Nuggets, respectively, before suffering a disappointing 108-101 home defeat to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday.

The Clippers, led by Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, who have combined to score 60.6 points per game during the losing streak, arrive in San Francisco in good health. During that time, Leonard is shooting 58.3% from the field, while George is hitting 48.1 percent of the time. Together, the two have shot 51.3% from beyond the arc.

NBA Preview: Indiana Pacers (28-35) at San Antonio Spurs (15-47)

0

The Indiana Pacers have already begun the postseason, and they are playing with a sense of urgency in the remaining 19 games of the regular season.

When Indiana plays the San Antonio Spurs on Thursday, it hopes to continue its upward trajectory. With a 102-94 victory over the Utah Jazz on Tuesday, the San Antonio Spurs ended their 16-game losing streak.

On Tuesday, Indiana defeated the Dallas Mavericks convincingly by a score of 124-122 to record its second consecutive victory. The Pacers were led by Tyrese Haliburton, who had 32 points, and Myles Turner, who had 24.

Indiana is two games out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference play-in tournament and must win quickly.

Turner has been the team’s most recent leader. Since the All-Star break, the 6-foot-11 center has scored 29.3 points per game on 69.3% shooting in three games. In the victory on Tuesday, he hit 10 of 13 field goals.

Jordan Nwora, a forward who was acquired from the Milwaukee Bucks on Feb. 9, has also provided the Pacers with some life. In Saturday’s 128-108 victory over the Orlando Magic, he had eight rebounds, six assists, and scored 18 points on 8 of 12 shooting.

In the second game of the season on Oct. 21, Indiana is aiming to avenge its 137-134 defeat of San Antonio. In the game, the Spurs never trailed.

Tuesday marked San Antonio’s first road victory since mid-December when it defeated Utah. Keldon Johnson had 25 points, Jeremy Sochan had 13, and Doug McDermott had 19.

The Spurs have Johnson scoring 21.8 points per game this season. He won the game against the Jazz with four points in the final minute.

Against Utah, which shot just 35.3 percent from the field for the season, San Antonio put together one of its best defensive performances of the season. After trailing early in the fourth quarter, the Spurs went on to win for the first time this season.

Popovich has been encouraged by the growth of rookie guard Blake Wesley, who has shown why he should get more playing time by averaging 7.3 points per game on 7-of-17 shooting over his last three games.

NBA Preview: Toronto Raptors (31-32) at Washington Wizards (29-32)

0

Starting on Thursday night, the Eastern Conference play-in favorites, the Washington Wizards and the Toronto Raptors, will play two games against each other.

Going into Thursday’s matchup, the ninth-place Raptors hold a one-game advantage over the 10th-place Wizards. Saturday’s second matchup is also in Washington.

The games will be the teams’ first of the season.

Last season, Toronto defeated the Wizards in three of four games, and it has won each of the previous four series. The Raptors have beaten the Wizards six times in a row at home, with their most recent victory coming on February 1, 2018.

Both teams are coming off victories over teams in the standings that are close to them.

Bradley Beal scored 37 points, a season-high, in the Wizards’ 119-116 road victory over the eighth-place Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday.

With 20 points from Pascal Siakam, the Raptors defeated the 11th-place Chicago Bulls 104-98 on Tuesday at home.

The Raptors defeated the Bulls 2-1 in the season series, giving them a chance to tie the game if necessary. The matchup between the Raptors and Wizards will also be influenced by that.

Before winning the hard-fought game in Atlanta, the Wizards had lost two straight.

The Raptors released Juancho Hernangomez prior to Tuesday’s game and signed veteran Will Barton, who had previously been acquired by the Wizards.

Barton, 32, is in his 11th season with Washington. He started none of his 40 games and had mostly dropped out of the rotation. He made 71 starts for the Denver Nuggets last season and averaged 14.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 3.9 assists. Additionally, he has appeared in 29 playoff games.

On Tuesday, Barton played four minutes without scoring and providing one assist.
