NBA Preview: Orlando Magic (28-40) at San Antonio Spurs (17-50)

0

The Orlando Magic will hope to keep their transitory postseason trusts alive and clear the season series with San Antonio when they fight the Spikes on Tuesday in the Alamo City.

With 14 regular-season games remaining, the Magic are just 3 1/2 games away from qualifying for the NBA’s Eastern Conference play-in tournament. At home on Saturday, Orlando prevailed 126-114 over Miami in overtime to end a three-game losing streak that had dropped the Magic to 13th place in the East.

In the victory over Miami, Wendell Carter Jr. posted a double-double of 27 points and 11 rebounds, avenging the Heat’s overtime defeat on Feb. 11. Orlando gave up a big lead in the fourth quarter, just like they did in their previous loss to Miami, but the Magic responded on Saturday, making seven of their nine shots from the floor in overtime.

The Magic were led by Paolo Banchero, who scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Franz Wagner scored 17 points as well. Jalen Suggs and Cole Anthony each scored 16 points, Markelle Fultz scored 12 points, and Gary Harris scored 11.

The Magic have the toughness to make some noise down the stretch, despite their youthful roster. The remaining games for Orlando are all against teams fighting for a playoff spot or postseason positioning, with the exception of two.

San Antonio will play its third game on Tuesday in a six-game homestand that began with mixed results, with a win on Friday against Denver, which leads the West, and a loss on Sunday against Oklahoma City, which only had one player available.

The latter, which ended in a 102-90 defeat for the Thunder, was played with starters Keldon Johnson, Jeremy Sochan, and Tre Jones out because of illness or injury.

It is anticipated that all three will return for the Magic showdown.

In the loss on Sunday, San Antonio was led by Zach Collins, who scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Devonte’ Graham scored 20, Keita Bates-Diop scored 12, and Doug McDermott scored 11.

After falling behind by as many as 17 points in the second quarter, the Spurs rallied to tie the game in the third, but they were unable to keep the momentum up, resulting in their third defeat in their last four games.

NBA Preview: Brooklyn Nets (39-29) at Oklahoma City Thunder (33-35)

0

Since the NBA All-Star break, the Oklahoma City Thunder and Brooklyn Nets have taken similar paths.

After the break, the Thunder dropped their first five games. The first four games the Nets lost,

Since then, Brooklyn has won five of its six games. Oklahoma City as well.

When the Nets and Thunder play each other on Tuesday in Oklahoma City, something has to give.

Brooklyn and the New York Knicks are tied for fifth place in the Eastern Conference going into this game, three games behind Cleveland.

The Thunder are one of many Western Conference teams in contention for the play-in tournament.

Both teams’ surge has been centered on defense. Both the Nets (105.7 points allowed per 100 possessions) and Thunder (108.4) have a defensive rating in the top four during their most recent hot streaks.

Even though the Nets are soaring since trading away Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant in separate deals in early February, center Nic Claxton said that the team’s victory over Denver on Sunday, which they won 122-120, does not quite qualify as a statement victory.

The Nets have changed, especially in terms of their defensive identity, thanks to the acquisitions of Dorian Finney-Smith and Spencer Dinwiddie in the Irving deal and Mikal Bridges and Cameron Johnson in the Durant deal.

Although the most recent outcomes have been favorable, it has taken some time for things to come together.

The final of Brooklyn’s five road games is on Tuesday.

The Nets will play 10 of their next 13 games at home following their matchup with the Thunder.

The Thunder did not make many changes before the deadline, but Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s return has been a big part of their recent success.

Gilgeous-Alexander has returned after missing five games and is shooting 54.7 percent from the field in three games while averaging 35.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 3.0 steals.

Gilgeous-Alexander has missed the second night of two consecutive games during this stretch.

In addition, rookie Jalen Williams has played a significant role in Oklahoma City’s recent success, averaging 22.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 5.3 assists while shooting 60.7% from the floor in his last four games.

This season, the teams have met twice, the second on Tuesday.

On January 15, Brooklyn hosted the first match, which Oklahoma City won 112-102.

NBA Preview: Los Angeles Lakers (33-35) at New Orleans Pelicans (33-35)

0

The Los Angeles Lakers have no plans to slow down now after reshaping their roster, overcoming significant injuries, and giving themselves a chance at making the playoffs with one month left in the regular season.

The Los Angeles Lakers will begin a brief two-game road trip on Tuesday against the New Orleans Pelicans, acting as though the playoffs have already begun. Their sense of urgency has only been heightened by Sunday’s home loss to the New York Knicks, which they lost 112-108.

The Lakers had won seven of their previous nine games before Sunday’s game, a remarkable run even without their star player LeBron James, who missed six of those games with a tendon injury to his right foot. James won’t be back for at least two more weeks.

The Lakers have been led by fellow star Anthony Davis, but his recent scoring spree has slowed down a bit. After scoring 33.0 points per game in his previous five games, the forward has scored just 12.5 points per game over the past two games.

D’Angelo Russell scored 33 points on Sunday to continue his recent scoring surge, but the Lakers were unable to reach.500 for the first time this season. Davis did have 16 rebounds. Los Angeles started the 2022-23 season with five losses in a row.

Davis will now play his former team, the Pelicans, in a matchup that is made more interesting by the fact that the Lakers and Pelicans both have 33-35 records. In fact, a group of teams battling to make the playoffs includes four Western Conference teams with the same record.

After dropping seven of their last ten games, the Pelicans, once considered one of the best teams in the West, are now in a scramble mode. However, their recent play has been better, as they have won two of their last three games, including Sunday’s 127-110 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers.

In the Pelicans’ victory on Sunday, Trey Murphy III scored 41 points, setting a new career high with nine 3-pointers. CJ McCollum scored 22 focuses and had 11 helps as New Orleans bounced back after a 110-96 home misfortune to the Oklahoma City Roar on Saturday.

After winning by 120-117 in overtime on November 2 and by 120-102 on February 15, both games were played at home, the Lakers will attempt to win the season series against the Pelicans. Brandon Ingram, a former Laker, scored 35 points to lead the Pelicans to a 131-126 victory over New Orleans in the first meeting on February 4.

With a sprained right ankle, Ingram, who averages 22.9 points per game, has missed the last two games for New Orleans.

NBA Preview: Denver Nuggets (46-22) at Toronto Raptors (32-36)

0

When the Denver Nuggets play the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday night, they will end a three-game losing streak.

The Nuggets lost 122-120 to the Brooklyn Nets at home on Sunday, despite Nikola Jokic’s 35 points, 20 rebounds, and 11 assists. Now, the Nuggets will play five games, starting in Toronto.

After their third loss in a row, the Raptors are entering a phase that will determine whether they are in the playoffs or a play-in situation, despite the fact that the Nuggets are still five games ahead of the Western Conference.

The Raptors are coming off a 122-112 defeat to the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday, ending a four-game road trip that included three defeats in a row.

The trip included a March 6 defeat at Denver, 118-113.

The Raptors held the second-to-last play-in spot in a competitive race when they entered Monday’s game ninth in the Eastern Conference.

The Raptors’ O.G. Anunoby scored 31 points. Since February 6, 2012, Toronto had not lost a game in which two players scored 30 or more points.

After Denver trailed by 15 points in the fourth quarter, Jokic missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer that would have won the game on Sunday.

Denver’s Jamal Murray had 16 points, but he didn’t play in the fourth quarter because his left knee hurt. He is listed as doubtful for the game on Tuesday.

Denver’s Michael Porter Jr. scored another 23 points. Christian Braun, who did not play until the fourth quarter, scored seven points, grabbed three rebounds, provided one assist, and blocked one shot to help start the rally.

After the Nuggets were outscored 37-18 in the third quarter, he played 11:39 of the fourth quarter to help Denver outpace Brooklyn 33-24.
