2023 NFL Annual Meeting: A Year of Confronting Challenges and Raising the Bar

The NFL will come together in Phoenix this week for its annual meeting. Fresh off one of the most competitive and compelling seasons in history, the league will focus on raising the bar in 2023. From innovation to player health and safety, fan engagement to diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, membership will engage in critical discussions to continue building a game that is competitive, accessible, and growing.

The following is a summary of progress since last year’s annual meeting:
o State of the Game:
▪ 2022 average final score margin of 9.70 was the lowest for a full season since 1932 (9.13).
▪ Comeback single-season records:
• Games in which deficit of 10 or more overcome to win or tie: 52.
▪ Competitive Balance: Since 1990—a streak of 33 consecutive seasons — at least four teams have qualified for the playoffs in every season that were not in the postseason the year before.
• 50 percent new playoff teams in 2022.
• 50 percent new division winners in 2022.
▪ Young Quarterbacks: The final 4 quarterbacks were all 27 or younger (Mahomes-27, Burrow-26, Hurts-24, Purdy-23).

o Player Health and Safety: The NFL continues to lead on health and safety and lean on medical advancements and data-driven injury reduction strategies.
▪ Overall injuries declined 5.4% in the regular season.
• Concussions: Across the past five seasons, there has been an average sustained 25% reduction in concussions due to improved protective equipment rules changes, and adjustments to playing style and technique.
• Diagnosed concussions rose 14% during the full 2022 season (regular and post) with a per game rate roughly the same as it was a couple of years ago.
• Guided by medical experts, enhanced protocols led to even more conservative evaluation and diagnosis of concussions. Doctors conducted 3-4 evaluations for every one concussion diagnosis.
• Emergency Action Plans: Every NFL club is required to create, rehearse and update annually a comprehensive Emergency Action Plan (EAP) for all NFL practice and playing facilities. It was this plan that guided the response to Damar Hamlin’s cardiac arrest.

o Diversity, Equity and Inclusion:
▪ Front Office Diversity:
• 7 team presidents are people of color—most ever.
o 4 were hired in the past year—Kevin Warren (CHI), Damani Leech (DEN), Sashi Brown (BAL), Sandra Douglass Morgan (LV).
• 9 general managers are people of color—most ever.
▪ Ownership Diversity: 15 clubs have female ownership or close involvement on a daily basis.
▪ Coaching Diversity: People of color represented 43 percent of all coaches, up from 35% in 2020.
• 15 women in team coaching roles, up 25 percent from 2021, and the most ever in any professional male league in the world.
▪ 2023 Hiring Cycle: Every club with open head coach/primary football executive positions exceeded the Rooney Rule requirement of interviewing at least two external diverse candidates.
• HEAD COACH (five open positions): 12 diverse candidates out of 28 total interviewed: 43%.
• PRIMARY FOOTBALL EXECUTIVE (two open positions): 7 diverse candidates out of 11 total interviewed: 64%.
▪ Coaching and Front Office Accelerator Program: The Accelerator is creating networking opportunities for diverse candidates and team owners.
• Ran Carthon, an Accelerator participant, hired as general manager of the Tennessee Titans.
▪ Inspire Change: The NFL provided more than $250 million to 40+ national social justice grant partners and more than 650 grassroots organizations across the country. A 5-year, $15 million extension with the players Coalition was reached.

o Innovation:
▪ New for 2023 season:
• A groundbreaking NFL Sunday Ticket agreement with YouTube.
• Flexible scheduling for Monday Night Football, allowing fans to watch more meaningful games in primetime.
• The first Black Friday game on Amazon Prime (available to all fans, not just subscribers).
▪ 2022 Advancements:
• Debut of Thursday Night Football on Amazon Prime.

o Median viewer age of 47 is eight years younger than the median on traditional linear networks and the youngest for an NFL broadcast package since 2013.
• NFL Films formed a partnership with Skydance, an award-winning media company to produce sports documentaries and feature films.
• NFL+ was launched to expand the league’s direct-to-consumer efforts.
• The NFL joined forces with NOBULL, making them the “Official Combine Training Partner of the NFL” and in the process reimagining the athlete experience at the NFL Scouting Combine.
• The NFL innovated with Gatorade by launching Fast Twitch, a new sports performance energy drink that will help fuel player performance on the field and elevate the fan experience through a differentiated product offering.

o Fan Engagement:
▪ Super Bowl Viewership: According to Nielsen, Super Bowl LVII reached approximately 200 million viewers.
▪ The Biggest Day of the Year on the Internet:
• NFL social video views were up 42% from last year.
• The most engaging day ever on NFL Social (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok).

o Regular Season Viewership: More than 185M fans watched NFL games during the 2022 regular season.
▪ During the 2022 regular season, NFL games ranked as the top 25 and as 47 of the top 50 telecasts (non-NFL were CFP semifinals and Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade).
▪ Despite representing only 12% of the games across the four major leagues, the NFL represents 71% of total content consumption.

o Globalizing the game:
▪ 2022 international games broke all records (attendance, viewership, merchandise).
• First-ever regular season game in Germany.

o Was NFL Network’s most-watched international game on ecord in the United States with more than 5.8 million viewers.
▪ NFL is all in on flag football, one of the world’s fastest growing and most inclusive sports.
• Flag featured in International Games, Pro Bowl Games, and Super Bowl.
• The NFL is supporting bid for flag inclusion at the LA 2028 Olympics.

o Ticket Sales: Attendance at NFL games was up 6% vs. 2021 and exceeded pre-pandemic metrics from 2019.
o Social Media: Social media video views on social content up 21 percent—fully distributed across every major platform.

Red Sox reassign three players to Minor League Camp

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today reassigned three players to minor league camp: first baseman/outfielder Daniel Palka and catchers Caleb Hamilton and Ronaldo Hernández.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

With today’s roster moves, the Red Sox have 38 players remaining in Major League Spring Training camp, including four non-roster invitees.

Hurricanes Clinch Playoff Spot for Fifth Straight Season

NHLStats about the Carolina Hurricanes, who are headed to the postseason for a fifth straight season, 10th time since relocating to Carolina in 1997-98 and 18th time in franchise history. Carolina became the second team to clinch a berth in the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs by virtue of the Panthers’ regulation loss Thursday.

Carolina’s five consecutive berths into the Stanley Cup Playoffs stands as the second-longest run in franchise history behind a seven-year stretch achieved more than 30 years ago as the Hartford Whalers. The Hurricanes have 24 playoff wins during their current stretch of appearances (48 GP) – a streak that began with a run to the 2019 Conference Finals – relative to an 18-28 mark by the Whalers during their seven-year run (46 GP).

Already the franchise leader in career playoff points, Sebastian Aho (18-28—46 in 48 GP) needs one playoff goal to surpass Rod Brind’Amour (18 in 72 GP) and tie Eric Staal (19 in 43 GP) for the club record. Teuvo Teravainen (16 in 48 GP) ranks fifth on the goals list, behind those three and Kevin Dineen (17 in 44 GP).

Sebastian Aho has four multi-goal playoff performances, tied with Kevin Dineen for the most in franchise history. Aho already owns the Hurricanes/Whalers record for most multi-point playoff games (12), while Jaccob Slavin has the most multi-assist playoff outings in franchise history (6).

Jordan Staal (2009 PIT) can become the fifth player in NHL history – and second in as many seasons – to go 14+ years between Stanley Cup wins. He would join Chris Chelios (16 years; 1986 MTL & 2002 DET), Mark Recchi (15 years; 1991 PIT & 2006 CAR), Bill Guerin (14 years; 1995 NJD & 2009 PIT) and Darren Helm (14; 2008 DET & 2022 COL). Staal made his Final debut with Pittsburgh in 2008, at age 19, before winning in 2009.

In Game 1 of the 2020 Stanley Cup Qualifiers, Martin Necas became the third player in franchise history to score the game-winning goal during his first career postseason contest (after Erik Cole and Sylvain Turgeon). Selected 12th overall in the 2017 NHL Draft, Necas will aim to become the seventh player from his draft class to play in the Stanley Cup Final – Robert Thomas (2019), Miro Heiskanen (2020), Jake Oettinger (2020), Alexander Volkov (2020), Nick Suzuki (2021) and Cale Makar (2022) all have done so.

Brent Burns, 38, can become the oldest defenseman in Hurricanes/Whalers history to record a postseason point – a mark currently held by Paul Coffey (37 years, 327 days) when he recorded an assist in Game 2 of the 1999 Conference Quarterfinals vs. Boston. The oldest blueliner to score a playoff goal for the club is Bret Hedican, who tallied in Game 4 and Game 6 of the 2006 Conference Finals at age 35. Jaccob Slavin (4-23—27) is the franchise playoff leader in career assists and points among defensemen and trails Dave Babych (7) and former teammate Dougie Hamilton (6) for playoff goals among Hurricanes/Whalers blueliners. Slavin holds the club record for most assists by a defenseman in one series (9 in 2019 R1 vs. WSH).

Frederik Andersen is 27-23 in his playoff career (53 GP, 2.55 GAA, .916 SV%, 3 SO) as he seeks his first such appearance with the Hurricanes. Six goaltenders have won their playoff debut with the franchise, including teammates Antti Raanta and Pyotr Kochetkov who did so two days apart to begin the 2022 First Round.

Paul Stastny is set for his first trip to the Stanley Cup Playoffs as a member of the Hurricanes following postseason appearances with the Avalanche, Blues, Jets and Golden Knights. Only six active players have played in the playoffs with at least five different teams: Derick Brassard (6), Ian Cole (6), Alex Chiasson (5), Erik Haula (5), Nick Bonino (5) and Pat Maroon (5). Others also can join this list in 2023.

Carolina has qualified for the playoffs in each season with Rod Brind’Amour as head coach (5), including a Conference Finals appearance in his Stanley Cup Playoffs debut in 2019. Brind’Amour is the third active head coach to lead a team to the playoffs in each of his first 5+ career seasons as an NHL head coach, joining Darryl Sutter (8 from 1993-2002 w/ CHI & SJS) and Todd McLellan (6 from 2009-2014 w/ SJS).

Bruins’ Greer Suspended One Game for Cross-Checking

NEW YORK – Boston Bruins forward A.J. Greer has been suspended for one game, without pay, for cross-checking Montreal Canadiens forward Mike Hoffman during NHL Game No. 1137 in Boston on Thursday, March 23, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

The incident occurred at 17:08 of the first period. Greer was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct for cross-checking.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and, based on his average annual salary, Greer will forfeit $4,121.62. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

NEW YORK – The National Hockey League today issued the following statement regarding Arizona Coyotes’ minority owner Andrew Barroway:

“The National Hockey League is aware of the arrest of Arizona Coyotes’ minority owner Andrew Barroway. Pending further information, he has been suspended indefinitely.”

According to a report from the Aspen Daily News, minority owner Andrew Barroway of the Arizona Coyotes was arrested on Thursday in Aspen and charged with felony strangulation and misdemeanor second-degree assault.

At 9:35 a.m. on Thursday, Barroway, 57, was taken into custody by police at the Limelight Hotel on Monarch Street. Barroway was transported to the Pitkin County Jail, where he remained until Friday morning, when he posted a $2,500 bond.

Jimmy Butler had one of his lowest scoring games of the season last month, and the Brooklyn Nets’ Mikal Bridges scored a career-high 45 points against the Miami Heat.

Butler is encouraging the Heat to victories with his recent scoring outburst, and his hot streak is occurring at a time when the new-look Nets are floundering.

The Heat are now No. 1 thanks to Butler’s hot streak. 6 in the Eastern Conference going into Friday’s game, and when the teams meet for their third and final time on Saturday in Miami, he wants to put on another strong performance to push the Nets even further down the standings.

The Heat (40-34) are gaining ground on the fifth-place New York Knicks and were half a game ahead of the seventh-place Nets (39-34), who have lost five of their last six games.

Brooklyn’s visit on January 8 marked a pivotal moment for the team’s direction and gives it a 2-0 lead in the series.

Kevin Durant sustained a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee when he collided with Butler in the third quarter of a 102-100 victory. Durant was traded to the Phoenix Suns on February 9, three days after the Dallas Mavericks traded Kyrie Irving, making it his final game with the Nets.

The Nets were in their third game with Bridges when the teams met on February 15, and the best game of his career helped Brooklyn win 116-105. In the second half, Bridges scored 15 straight points, and he did it while Butler was held to 13.

Butler has averaged 26.3 points on 60.5 percent shooting, including 52.6 percent from three-point range, since that game, the sixth time he has been held under 15 points. The Heat are 8-5 since the All-Star break, having lost their first two games. Butler has scored at least 23 points 11 times.

Steward delivered his fourth 30-point round of the month Wednesday when his 35 assisted the Intensity with pulling ceaselessly down the stretch in a 127-120 triumph over the meeting New York Knicks.

During this week’s two-game series against the Cavaliers, the Nets suffered losses in two distinct ways.

On Tuesday, the Nets fell behind by as much as 24 points before coming back to win 115-109. On Thursday, Brooklyn had an eight-point lead with 2:13 to go, but Cleveland’s Isaac Okoro hit an open 3-pointer in the last second to win the game 116-114.

Thursday’s loss came after Brooklyn couldn’t get a guarded bounce back on a missed free toss by Donovan Mitchell with 10 seconds remaining.

Thursday, Bridges scored 32 points, but the Nets scored 23 in the fourth quarter and committed five of their 16 turnovers, including an errant pass by Dorian Finney-Smith with 13.3 seconds left that set up the final sequences. Two of those points came in the fourth quarter.

Two-time NL All-Star pitcher signed thru 2025; Redbirds tab Mikolas for his 2nd career Opening Day start

JUPITER, Fla., – The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have agreed to a two-year (2024-25) contract extension with All-Star pitcher Miles Mikolas that will keep him in a Redbirds uniform through at least the 2025 season.

“We are extremely pleased to announce that Miles Mikolas will remain a Cardinal for the foreseeable future,” said Cardinals’ President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak.  “Miles stands among the top pitchers in the game today, and has continued to provide a steady presence for us both in the rotation and inside the clubhouse. The team is also looking forward to Miles taking the ball for us on Opening Day next week at Busch Stadium.”

The team also announced today that Mikolas is set to make his 2nd career Opening Day start when the Cardinals begin their 2023 regular season campaign next Thursday in St. Louis.  Mikolas was also tabbed as the club’s Opening Day starter in 2019 at Milwaukee.

“The Cardinals have long emphasized the importance of retaining our core players,” said Cardinals Chairman Bill DeWitt, Jr. “Since Miles first joined us in 2018, he has proven to be both a strong leader and performer, and we are pleased that he will remain a Cardinal for the next several years.”

Mikolas, 34, first joined the Cardinals as a free-agent in 2018 and went on to tie for the National League lead in wins with a career-high 18.  Since coming to St. Louis, Miles has gone 41-34 with a 3.46 ERA in 106 career games pitched for the Redbirds and was selected to the N.L. All-Star team in both 2018 and 2022.   He signed a four-year (2020-23) contract extension with the Cardinals in February of 2019.

A Jupiter, Fla. native, Mikolas has excelled when performing in front of the St. Louis fans, posting a 2.60 career ERA at Busch Stadium III, the third best among qualifying pitchers. 

Miles is ranked among the majors’ top pitchers in walk pct. (4.3 pct., 2nd) and first pitch strike pct. (66.8 pct., T2nd) since joining the Cardinals in 2018, and the Redbirds are 64-42 (.604 win pct.) in his 106 career games pitched for the organization.

Mikolas (12-13, 3.29 ERA) ranked among National League leaders in a number of categories last season, pacing the team in innings pitched (202.1), starts (32) and quality starts (22) – all ranking 3rd in the senior circuit. His 202.1 innings pitched were a single-season career best and it marked the second 200-inning campaign (also 2018) of his career.

Mikolas was a member of the Team USA pitching staff in this year’s World Baseball Classic, working 6.0 IP over two relief appearances, including 4.0 innings in the American’s semi-final win over Cuba.

The 6-4, 230-pound righty owns a career mark of 45-40 with a 3.70 ERA in 143 games (115 starts) with San Diego (2012-13), Texas (2014) and St. Louis (2018-22).   He pitched three seasons (2015-17) with the Yomiuri Giants in the Japanese Central League where he was 31-13 with a 2.18 ERA in 62 games, all starts.

Mikolas was voted by his teammates the recipient of the Darryl Kile Award in 2018, and he was named co-recipient of the J.G. Taylor Spink Baseball Man of the Year in 2018 by the St. Louis Chapter of the BBWAA.  He was selected as the St. Louis Chapter’s Bob Bauman Physical Comeback Award recipient for 2022.
