NBA Preview: Memphis Grizzlies (23-13) at Charlotte Hornets (10-28)

0

The Memphis Grizzlies like to go fast, and they have backcourt personnel fully capable of doing so.

That might be a good trait for the Grizzlies in any situation and perhaps even better going into Wednesday night’s road game against the Charlotte Hornets.

The Hornets can’t seem to slow down anybody.

Memphis will arrive with the guard combination of Ja Morant and Tyus Jones, a duo that seems to be growing together as they tear through opponents.

Across the past dozen games, the Hornets are toward the bottom of the NBA in fastbreak points allowed.

The Grizzlies have won three games in a row, capped with Sunday’s 118-108 home victory against the Sacramento Kings. Morant racked up 35 points for his fifth game of 30 or more points in the last seven outings.

The Hornets have lost seven of their last eight home games, with numerous snags to sort out. Many of the issues are rooted on defense.

Charlotte won’t have an easy time making defensive improvements and will be further hindered by the loss of Kelly Oubre Jr. and his 20.2 points per game. Oubre is expected to miss at least a month after surgery on his left hand.

Memphis has plenty of muscle in the middle with enter Steven Adams, who has 44 combined rebounds over the past two games.

In the last nine wins for Memphis, the Grizzlies haven’t allowed more than 108 points.

Memphis owns a 130-99 romp past visiting Charlotte on Nov. 4. The Hornets didn’t have point guard LaMelo Ball for that game, so the rematch is expected to include two of the league’s exciting young guards.

Morant had 12 points and 11 assists in the first game against the Hornets, as Charlotte largely was hindered by Memphis’ 60-41 rebounding edge. Adams had 19 rebounds that night.

In the Hornets’ home loss Monday to the Los Angeles Lakers, amid LeBron James’ 43-point outburst, a notable achievement was largely overlooked. Charlotte center Mason Plumlee recorded his 100th career double-double.

Charlotte could be without swingman Gordon Hayward, who left Monday’s game with hamstring soreness.

Wednesday night’s game marks one of only three road outings for the Grizzlies across the first 19 days of January. The team played only six road games in December.

Astros acquire OF Bligh Madris from Tigers

0

HOUSTON, TX – The Houston Astros have acquired outfielder Bligh Madris from the Detroit Tigers today in exchange for cash considerations. Madris will be placed on the Astros 40-man roster, which is now at 39.

Madris, 26, made his Major League debut with the Pirates in 2022, but spent most of the season in the minor leagues. In 71 games at Triple A Indianapolis, he hit .294 (75×255) with 19 doubles, four triples, seven home runs and 34 RBI with a .366 on-base percentage and a .482 slugging percentage (.848 OPS).

On June 20, he was called up to the Major Leagues for the first of what would be two stints with the Pirates big club. Madris would have a memorable Major League debut that day, tallying three hits and two RBI in a 12-1 victory over the Cubs. Overall in his two Major League stints with the Pirates, he hit .177 (20×113) in 39 games with a home run and seven RBI.

On Sept. 16, Madris was claimed off waivers by the Tampa Bay Rays and assigned to Triple A Durham where he was productive, hitting  .317 (13×41) in 10 games with four home runs and 15 RBI (.683 SLG, 1.053 OPS). Madris would later be claimed off waivers by the Tigers on Nov. 18.

Madris has appeared in right field in 323 of his 486 career minor league games. He was originally selected by the Pirates in the ninth round of the 2017 June Draft.

White Sox agree to terms on five-year, $75-million contract with outfielder Andrew Benintendi

0

CHICAGO – The Chicago White Sox have agreed to terms on a five-year, $75-million contract with free agent All-Star outfielder Andrew Benintendi. Under terms of the deal, Benintendi, 28, will receive a $3-million signing bonus, $8.0 million in 2023, $16.5 million each season from 2024-26 and $14.5 million in 2027.

Benintendi, who bats and throws left-handed, combined to hit a career-high .304/.373/.399 (140-461) with 23 doubles, five home runs, 51 RBI and 54 runs scored in 126 games with Kansas City and New York-AL in 2022 and was named to his first career American League All-Star Team. He batted .318/.388/.428 (104-327) vs. right-handed pitching between the two stops.

Benintendi, who will wear uniform No. 23, began the season with the Royals, hitting .320/.387/.398 (111-347) in 93 games before being traded to the Yankees on July 27 as part of a four-player deal. Benintendi suffered a broken hook of the hamate bone in his right hand on September 2 at Tampa Bay and missed the remainder of the season, including the postseason.

Benintendi is a career .279/.351/.431 (778-2,791) hitter with 169 doubles, 18 triples, 73 home runs, 384 RBI, 396 runs scored and 69 stolen bases in 745 games over seven major-league seasons with Boston (2016-20), Kansas City (2021-22) and the Yankees (2022). He was a Gold Glove Award winner with the Royals in 2021 and hit 40-plus doubles in back-to-back seasons with the Red Sox in 2018-19.

Benintendi owns a career .286/.358/.451 (587-2,055) slash line vs. right-handed pitching, .324/.408/.492 (211-652) with runners in scoring position and .319/.392/.505 (241-756) vs. AL Central teams. Since 2017, he leads all MLB left fielders with 31 defensive runs saved (source: Fangraphs).

Benintendi has 21 career games of postseason experience, hitting .272/.322/.407 (22-81) with five doubles, two homers, nine RBI and 18 runs scored. He was a member of Boston’s 2018 World Series championship club.

During Benintendi’s two seasons in Kansas City, new White Sox manager Pedro Grifol served as Royals bench coach, new third base coach Eddie Rodriguez was the minor-league field coordinator, and major-league field coordinator Mike Tosar was a special assignment hitting coach in the organization

Benintendi originally was selected by the Red Sox in the first round (seventh overall) of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Arkansas.

The White Sox 40-man roster increases to 39.

• The team’s 4.00 goals-per-game played on the road led the NHL entering play Monday.
