WBB-FCS: Tenn-Chattanooga Mocs (8-7) at East Tennessee State Buccaneers (13-3)

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Southern Conference portion of the women’s basketball season starts this week with much intrigue, as ETSU women’s basketball hosts its most classic rival – Chattanooga – inside Brooks Gym on Thursday, Jan. 5 at 7 p.m.

The Bucs and Mocs will meet for the 92nd time on Thursday — the most frequent rivalry in ETSU’s history.

ABOUT THE BUCS

  • ETSU enters with a 13-3 overall record — the best non-conference finish in the program’s modern era.
  • The Southern Conference began sponsoring a women’s basketball championship in 1983-84. In that first season, ETSU had 11 non-conference wins, which marked the school record for non-conference wins for 39 years. ETSU broke that this season with 13.
  • Last time out, the Bucs defeated Converse College in a New Year’s Eve special inside Brooks Gym with an 82-35 victory. The 47-point win margin marked the second-largest win of the season.
  • ETSU is ranked in the College insider Women’s Mid-Major Top-25 Poll for the second straight week, moving up two spots to No. 20 yesterday. Two weeks ago, the Bucs began receiving votes before sliding into the No. 22 spot last Tuesday.
  • Prior to this season, ETSU’s last ranking in the College Insider Women’s Mid-Major Top-25 came in 2010 at No. 16. The team started 2-0 that season, including a win over Chattanooga.
  • As of this week, the Bucs are nationally-ranked in multiple categories among NCAA Division I teams, including the 10th ranked scoring defense in the country with 52.9 points allowed per game.
  • ETSU is also ranked in the national Top 50 in offensive rebounding (10th – 16.1 per game), rebounding margin (21st – +10.0), rebounds per game (29th – 42.8), field goal percentage defense (33rd – 35.5 percent) and winning percentage (43rd – 81.2 percent).
  • The Bucs lead the SoCon in overall wins, scoring defense, scoring margin, defensive field goal percentage and rebounding margin. ETSU is also the only SoCon team to win at least one neutral site game this season, winning three.
  • ETSU has lost three games this season. After all three losses, the Bucs went on to enjoy three separate streaks involving four or more wins. The most recent loss to Bowling Green brought about a five-game win streak with wins over Charleston Southern, UNC Asheville, Longwood, Mount St. Mary’s and Converse College.
  • A win tomorrow would tie the longest win streak since flipping the calendar in 2017-18 with six straight wins. That streak started Dec. 29, 2017 with a win over North Greenville and ended with five straight conference wins to start the 2018 portion of the season.
  • ETSU also ranks 19th nationally in offensive rebounding at 15.9 boards per game.
  • Graduate guard Jiselle Thomas (Norwalk, Ohio) leads the Bucs with 14.2 points per game. She scored her 1,000th career point in the season opener against No. 1 South Carolina and ranks among the top six scorers in the SoCon this season.
  • Sophomore guard Nevaeh Brown (Charlotte, N.C.) is averaging 10.3 PPG and has started the last four games. She led the team off the bench in her first 11 games.
  • ETSU’s two-headed monster on the boards has been true freshman Journee McDaniel (New Bern, N.C.) and graduate Jayla Ruffus-Milner (North Hills, Calif.). McDaniel and Ruffus-Milner are ranked among the top seven in rebounding with over seven rebounds per contest, with Ruffus-Milner leading in fourth at 7.4 RPG.
  • Ruffus-Milner scored her 400th career point against Bowling Green and grabbed her 400th career rebound against UNC Asheville. She also achieved her first double-double of the season against Mount St. Mary’s with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
  • The Blue and Gold are led by first year Coach Brenda Mock Brown, who took over in August. Notorious for her turnaround at UNC Asheville, Coach Mock has already doubled last year’s win total for ETSU with a full conference schedule still to play.
  • ETSU has a 6-1 record at home this season and is 3-0 in Thursday games.
  • The Bucs finished the month of December with a 7-1 record.
  • In all 13 wins, ETSU has led at halftime and has won the rebounding battle. ETSU has also held opponents to under 60 points and under 40 percent shooting in 12 of the 13 wins.
  • This season, ETSU will seek its first winning campaign and postseason appearance since 2018, where the team finished 20-13 overall, 11-3 in the SoCon and with an appearance in the Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT). ETSU has made three NCAA tournament appearances all-time (2008, 2009, 2010) and four WNIT appearances (1995, 2006, 2014, 2018).

ABOUT THE MOCS

  • Chattanooga enters conference play with an 8-7 overall record.
  • ETSU and Chattanooga are the only two teams in the SoCon to allow below 62.0 PPG.
  • Chattanooga is just three points per game behind ETSU offensively at 58.4 PPG.
  • Much like ETSU, Chattanooga has leaned on strong defensive play all season. Both teams have ranked atop the SoCon in points allowed per game virtually all season and currently rank in the top 15 nationally. Chattanooga has the 14th ranked defense with 53.7 PPG allowed.
  • Chattanooga leads the league in rebounding defense, allowing just 30.7 RPG, while ranking second in free throw percentage (76.6 percent) and third in scoring margin (+4.7).
  • The Mocs have dropped their last two games with losses to Marshall (60-56) and Jacksonville State (59-51) to close non-conference play.
  • Jacksonville State is one of two common opponents between the Mocs and Bucs. The other is UNC Asheville, which both teams beat by a 12-point margin. ETSU defeated Jacksonville State in a 55-54 thriller in Johnson City.
  • Chattanooga has a 4-2 record at home and a 4-5 record in road games. Two of the last three wins have come on the road with victories at North Alabama and Ohio.
  • The Mocs are led in scoring by senior guard Yazz Wazeerud-Din with 15.8 PPG — ranking fourth in the SoCon.
  • Freshman forward Raven Thompson has wasted no time impacting the Mocs from the post, ranking ninth in the league in scoring at 13.3 PPG while ranking third in rebounding at 7.9 RPG. She also ranks third in field goal percentage at 54.5 percent from the floor (66-121).
  • Both Wazeerud-Din and Thompson are among the league’s Top 10 in free throw shooting at roughly 78 percent each.
  • Senior forward Abbey Cornelius is one of two SoCon players to enter league play with over a block per game at 1.2 with 18 blocked shots in 15 games. Cornelius was Chattanooga’s lone preseason all-conference selection this year.
  • The Mocs are led by first year head coach Shawn Poppie, who came to Chattanooga after six seasons as an assistant at Virginia Tech and three years prior to that as an assistant at Furman. Poppie played collegiately at Limestone and graduated in 2007.

SERIES HISTORY

  • Chattanooga owns a 66-25 advantage in the all-time series through 91 meetings.
  • Since 1979, the in-state foes have met at least once every year except 2006 and 2014.
  • ETSU has won four of the last 10 meetings — dating back to 2018.
  • The two rivals split last year’s meetings with the road team winning each time.
  • The last meeting happened in Chattanooga, as ETSU pulled out a 65-62 victory inside McKenzie Arena in front of over 1,100 fans on Feb. 12, 2022.
  • Four current Bucs started in that 2022 win with sophomores Courtney Moore (Gainesville, Fla.) and Jakhyia Davis (Knoxville, Tenn.) combining for 30 points — 15 apiece. Fellow sophomore Sarah Thompson (Gate City, Va.) added eight points in the win.
  • Of ETSU’s 25 wins in the series, 14 have come at home in Johnson City.

WBB-FCS: Milwaukee Panthers (5-7) at Northern Kentucky Norse (8-5)

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Milwaukee picked up a pair of home wins to close out 2022 and looks to extend that streak on the road this week. The Panthers open a four-game road stretch with a trip to Northern Kentucky on Thursday at 6:00 pm CT. The game can be viewed on ESPN+ and will also have live stats and live audio with Matt Menzl on the call. All links are available on MKEPanthers.com.

SCOUTING THE NORSE
After splitting last weekend with a win over Wright State, Northern Kentucky enters this week 2-2 in Horizon League action.

The Norse are a dangerous group, however, with one of the Horizon League Player of the Year front-runners in Lindsay Duvall. The graduate student leads the league with 20.0 points per game, ranks second with 10.0 rebounds per contest, and is tied for 12th with 2.3 assists per game. She has scored in double figures all 13 games including back-to-back 25-plus point performances.

Additionally, Kailee Davis (13.4 points per game) and Ivy Turner (11.9) are averaging double digits for the team which ranks second in the league with 72.1 points per game.

NKU is one of just three Horizon League teams with a positive assist-to-turnover ratio, ranking third at 1.08. The Norse have totaled 192 assists this season with Davis’ 49 pacing the way. That number also leads the league.

LAST TIME THEY MET
Milwaukee used a 10-2 run to begin the fourth quarter and cut a double-digit deficit to three, but came up just short in a 61-53 setback on January 23. Megan Walstad finished with 18 points and eight rebounds while Emma Wittmershaus totaled 11 points and six boards.

SERIES HISTORY
NKU has had the Panthers number as of late, winning six of the last seven matchups to improve to 9-6 against MKE. The Panthers’ last win over NKU was on November 20, 2021. MKE has also struggled on the road, going 2-5 at NKU.

WHATS ON TAP?
The road trip continues on Saturday as Milwaukee faces Wright State in a 12:00 pm matchup.

LAST TIME OUT
Milwaukee dominated the paint on Saturday and shut down Oakland in a 65-49 victory at the Klotsche Center. Milwaukee held the Golden Grizzlies to 25.8 percent shooting and owned a 32-12 advantage inside.

DEFENSE ON LOCK
Milwaukee’s defense has been solid all season long but last weekend, it was on another level.

In the two wins over Detroit Mercy and Oakland, the Panthers allowed just 39.0 points per game on 22.5 percent shooting. The two teams were just 8-for-42 (19.0 percent) from long range.

Neither the Titans nor Golden Grizzlies reached 50 points, the first time MKE has held opponents to under 50 in back-to-back games since November 18-20 of last season. In those games, MKE opened league play 2-0 while holding Wright State to 47 points and Northern Kentucky to 49.

PICTURE PERFECT
In the Panthers’ win over Oakland, Megan Walstad was flawless, going 5-for-5 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the free throw line for 14 points.

It marks the first time a Panther finished perfect from the floor with at least five field goals since Miquela Santoro went 5-for-5 on February 19, 2022.

Walstad added a team-high nine rebounds and two assists in the victory.

THAT’S WHAT WE NEAD
Kendall Nead reaching double digits is becoming common and is a much-needed offensive spark for the Panthers.

The sophomore scored at least 10 points for the third straight game and fifth time in the last six contests.

Nead has upped her season averages to career-highs for points (9.4), rebounds, (3.6), and assists (1.5).

She’s proved she can score in multiple ways after going 6-for-9 from three-point range last weekend.

RECORD-SETTING WIN
Defense was the story in a win over Detroit Mercy on December 29, setting multiple program bests.

The Panthers held the Titans to 29 points, the lowest for an opponent in NCAA Division I history surpassing Valparaiso’s 31 from February 25, 2012.

Detroit also converted just 17.5 percent of its field goals, the lowest field goal percentage for an opponent since MKE held Youngstown State to 19.4 percent on March 6, 2010.

The seven made field goals for Detroit were also an opponent program-low for the Panthers, four fewer than the previous mark.

OFFENSE PICKING UP
In addition to stellar defense, the offense has picked it up the last two games, shooting 50 percent from the floor and 40 percent from long range.

Milwaukee scored at least 60 points in back-to-back games for the first time this season, resulting in two wins.

When reaching at least 60 points, the Panthers are 3-0. The other win was a 76-point outburst against Loyola Chicago.

FINDING A WAY INSIDE
Emma Wittmerhaus has been the Panthers’ most consistent presence inside this season, averaging 10.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per game.

The redshirt senior led with 15 points against Detroit Mercy and has reached double digits in six of the last seven games and nine of the last 11.

The redshirt senior is having a career-year, leading the team in points per game while ranking second in rebounds and field goal percentage (50.0).

NEED A ROAD SHOW
Milwaukee has yet to find success on the road, winless in five games. The Panthers have struggled shooting the ball away from the Klotsche Center, with a 35.9 percent field goal percentage and 21.4 three-point percentage in those five games. MKE averages 50.2 points on the road and will need to turn it around to match NKU, who is 7-2 at home.

ALL OF THE DOUBLE DIGITS
In the win over Detroit Mercy, Milwaukee had five players reach double figures. Grace Crowley led the way with 13 points while Kendall Nead (12), Anna Lutz (11), Kamy Peppler (10), and Emma Wittmershaus (10) all joined in double digits.

It marks the first time Milwaukee had at least five players with at least 10 points since February 8, 2020. That game, Jamie Reit’s 13 points led the way while Bre Cera added 12, McKaela Schmelzer and Sydney Staver each had 11, and Lizzie Odegard finished with 10 in a 65-60 win over Green Bay.

Milwaukee improved to 2-0 this year when at least four players reach double figures. The Panthers are 16-4 over the last five years when four or more players reach at least 10 points.

MAGIC NUMBER
In college basketball, there is no perfect recipe for a win but for Milwaukee, field goal percentage has been a pretty good baseline.

In the last seven seasons, Milwaukee is 87-25 (.775) when hitting at least 40 percent from the field. Bump that field goal percentage to 43 percent and the Panthers are 67-12 (.846).

When shooting under 40 percent since 2016-17, Milwaukee is just 25-61 (.294).

The Panthers have been held under 40 percent in seven games this year, going 1-6 in those contests.

A LITTLE BIT FROM EVERYONE
As it stands right now, the Panthers do not have a single player averaging at least 10 points per game but have five players with 6.0 or more per contest.

Emma Wittmershaus leads with 9.7 points per game followed by Kendall Nead at 9.0. Angie Cera is next with 8.7 points per game while   Grace Crowley is adding 6.9 per contest and Megan Walstad is averaging 6.4.

The last time Milwaukee did not have at least one player averaging double digits was 2019-20. That year, Brandi Bisping (9.3 ppg) and Lizzie Odegard (9.0 ppg) led the charge for the Panthers.

ARE YOU CERA-IOUS?
Angie Cera was on fire in the second half against Eastern Illinois on December 22, finishing with a career-high 21 points. The sophomore finished 7-for-15 from the floor and hit four three-pointers.

In the second half alone, Cera went 5-for-10 with three triples for 16 of the Panthers’ 29 points.

Cera is putting together a career-year so far with highs in points (8.7), rebounds (2.2), and assists (1.9). She’s already surpassed her previous career-best with 14 three-pointers this year.

GO GET IT, GRACE
Grace Crowley has put together an impressive year after playing limited minutes last season.

This year, Crowley is averaging 6.7 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. The redshirt sophomore is shooting 58.7 percent from the floor and is 26-for-34 (76.5 percent) from the free throw line. Additionally, Crowley has added 19 assists and 11 steals this season.

She’s done all of that off the bench in just 17.1 minutes per game, which is eighth on the team.

PRESEASON HONORS FOR WALSTAD
Megan Walstad was named to the Preseason All-Horizon League First Team following another impressive campaign in 2021-22. Walstad dominated down low, earning her second straight First Team All-League award last season. She led the team and was among the league’s leaders in points per game (14.4), rebounds per game (9.1), field goal percentage (48.8), free throw percentage (88.9), and blocks per game (1.5). Walstad was also named to the All-Defensive Team for the second straight year.

Walstad joined a group of just three others in program history to earn All-League First Team honors on more than one occasion in the Panthers’ Division I era and is just the second in MKE history to earn All-Defensive Team distinction multiple times.

Additionally, Walstad was one of 25 players to be named to the 2022 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year preseason Watch List.

MISS BASKETBALL IN THE HOUSE
Kamy Peppler was crowned 2022 Miss Basketball for Wisconsin but it’s not the first time Milwaukee has had a student-athlete with that title arrive on campus.

In fact, Megan Walstad earned that title in her home state of Minnesota after leading Eastview High School to a perfect 32-0 record as a senior.

Prior to that, just one other player in program history donned the title of Miss Basketball. Meredith Onson (2005-08) was a consensus Wisconsin Player of the year in 2002-03. Onson originally attended Boston University but transfered to Milwaukee for the 2004-05 season.

WBB-FBS: Nevada Wolfpack (4-8) at San Diego State Aztecs (11-3)

SAN DIEGO – Nevada women’s basketball begins the 2023 new year on the road at San Diego State on Thursday at 5 p.m.

Nevada is undefeated this season when it holds its opponents to under 60 points. The Pack are coming off holding San Jose State to 47 points on Dec. 29, the lowest point total by a Nevada opponent in a conference opener since the Pack joined a conference in the NCAA Era.

Lexie GivensAlyssa JimenezMegan Ormiston and Victoria Davis have contributed heavily in multiple categories recently for the Pack. Givens produced back-to-back double-doubles for points and rebounds in the 2022 Nugget Classic on Nov. 25 and 27, earning All-Tournament team honors in the process. She was the first Nevada player since Terae Briggs in 2018 to post a double-double in back-to-back games.

Davis and Jimenez came up with double digit numbers in points and rebounds against Idaho on Dec. 3, becoming the first Nevada duo to collect a double-double in the same game since 2019. Ormiston picked up her first collegiate double-double (26 points, 11 rebounds) on Dec. 11 against Santa Clara, posting career-highs in both categories. Jimenez most recently added her second career double-double on Dec. 29 against San Jose State (14 points, 10 rebounds).

Nevada has had one fourth of its 2022-23 roster register at least one career 20-point outing. Most recently, graduate student Megan Ormiston has scored over 20 points in two out of her last four outings. She registered a career-high 26 points on Dec. 11 against Santa Clara and dropped 21 points in the Pack’s next game on Dec. 17 against Oregon State. Guards Audrey Roden and Victoria Davis have also captured games with at least 20 points.

SCOUTING SAN DIEGO STATE
With an 11-3 record and undefeated mark in Mountain West play so far, San Diego State comes into Thursday’s game as one of the best teams in the conference. The Aztecs have won four out of their last five games, defeating their opponents by an average of 11.6 points.

San Diego State has three players averaging at least 11 points per game, led by Asia Avinger with an 11.9 points per game mark to go with 3.1 rebounds per game.
