49ERS RB CHRISTIAN MCCAFFREY, EAGLES LB HAASON REDDICK & FALCONS K YOUNGHOE KOO NAMED NFC PLAYERS OF THE MONTH  FOR DECEMBER/JANUARY

Running back CHRISTIAN MCCAFFREY of the San Francisco 49ers, linebacker HAASON REDDICK of the Philadelphia Eagles and kicker YOUNGHOE KOO of the Atlanta Falcons are the NFC Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Month for the month of December/January (Weeks 13-18).

OFFENSE: RB CHRISTIAN MCCAFFREY, SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS

  • McCaffrey totaled 27 receptions with a league-high 767 scrimmage yards (505 rushing, 262 receiving) and seven touchdowns (four rushing, three receiving), the most among NFC players, during the final six weeks of the season. He had four games with at least 135 scrimmage yards and recorded a touchdown in each of the six games from Weeks 13-18.
  • This is the second Offensive Player of the Month award for McCaffrey, also having won with Carolina in September of the 2019 season. He becomes the first San Francisco running back to earn the honor.
  • He is one of three former Stanford Cardinal players to win Offensive Player of the Month, along with Andrew Luck (two-time winner) and Pro Football Hall of Famer John Elway (two-time winner).

DEFENSE: LB HAASON REDDICK, PHILADELPHIA EAGLES

  • Reddick led all players with eight sacks and added five tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery from Weeks 13-18. He was the only player with multiple sacks in three games over the final six weeks of the season.
  • This is the first-career Defensive Player of the Month award for Reddick. He becomes the fourth Eagles linebacker ever to earn the honors, joining Connor Barwin (November, 2014), Mark Simoneau (October, 2003) and Jeremiah Trotter (December, 2000).
  • Reddick becomes the second player from Temple to win a Player of the Month award, joining kicker Brandon McManus, who was named the Special Teams Player of the Month in October of the 2015.

SPECIAL TEAMS: K YOUNGHOE KOO, ATLANTA FALCONS

  • Koo converted all 12 of his field goal attempts, including all four of his attempts of 40-or-more yards, and each of his seven point after attempts for a total of 43 points during the final six weeks of the season. He was the only player from Weeks 13-18 to kick at least 12 field goals and make 100 percent of his kicks.
  • This is the second Special Teams Player of the Month award for Koo, after having won the award in November of the 2020. He becomes the third Falcons kicker to earn the honor multiple times, joining Pro Football Hall of Famer Morten Andersen (September and December, 1995) and Matt Bryant (November, 2014 and October, 2016).
  • He is the second former Georgia Southern kicker to be named Special Teams Player of the Month this season, joining Buffalo’s Tyler Bass, who earned the award in November.

CHIEFS RB JERICK MCKINNON, RAVENS LB ROQUAN SMITH & CHARGERS K CAMERON DICKER NAMED AFC PLAYERS OF THE MONTH FOR DECEMBER/JANUARY

Running back JERICK MCKINNON of the Kansas City Chiefs, linebacker ROQUAN SMITH of the Baltimore Ravens and kicker CAMERON DICKER of the Los Angeles Chargers are the AFC Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Month for the months of December and January (Weeks 13-18).

OFFENSE: RB JERICK MCKINNON, KANSAS CITY CHIEFS

McKinnon led the NFL with nine touchdowns (eight receiving, one rushing) over the final six weeks of the season and recorded a touchdown reception in each game. He is the first running back since 1970 with a touchdown reception in at least five consecutive games.

His nine touchdown receptions this season are tied with Pro Football Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk (nine touchdown receptions in 2001), Chuck Foreman (nine in 1975) and Leroy Hoard (nine in 1971) for the most by a running back in a single season in the Super Bowl era.

This is the first-career Offensive Player of the Month award for McKinnon and he becomes the sixth Chiefs running back to earn the honor, joining Priest Holmes (two-time winner), Kareem Hunt, Larry Johnson (two-time winner), Christian Okoye and Barry Word.

McKinnon is the first player from Georgia Southern to ever win an Offensive Player of the Month award.
DEFENSE: LB ROQUAN SMITH, BALTIMORE RAVENS

Smith ranked fifth in the NFL with 66 tackles over the season’s final six weeks and ranked tied for fifth with six tackles for loss. He also added an interception and a sack and was the only player in the league with at least 60 tackles, an interception and a sack since Week 13.

This is the first Defensive Player of the Month award for Smith and he joins Pro Football Hall of Famer Ray Lewis (November, 2003), Bart Scott (September, 2006) and Terrell Suggs (two-time winner) as the only Ravens linebackers to ever earn the honor.

He is the sixth former Georgia Bulldog to win Defensive Player of the Month and the first since linebacker Thomas Davis (November, 2013).
SPECIAL TEAMS: K CAMERON DICKER, LOS ANGELES CHARGERS

Dicker totaled 47 points over the season’s final six weeks, connecting on all 14 of his point-after attempts and 11 of his 12 field goal attempts, including a game-winning 43-yarder in Week 15.

This is the first Special Teams Player of the Month award for Dicker and is the third Chargers kicker to ever earn the honor, joining John Carney (three-time winner) and Greg Davis (October, 1997).

Dicker becomes the 10th rookie kicker to win Special Teams Player of the Month and the first since Evan McPherson (December, 2021).

Blue Bombers extend contract of offensive tackle Jermarcus Hardrick

0

WINNIPEG, MB., –   The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today announce the club has signed American offensive tackle Jermarcus Hardrick to a one-year contract extension. He was scheduled to become a free agent next month.

Hardrick (6-5, 319, University of Nebraska; born: May 30, 1990, in Batesville, MS) returns to the Blue Bombers for a seventh season in 2023. Hardrick started 17 regular season games at right tackle for the Blue Bombers in 2022 and was part of an offence that finished second in offensive points (28.2), first in touchdowns (58), second in rushing yards (113.5) while yielding the second-fewest sacks (29).

Hardrick and the Blue Bombers offensive line played pivotal roles in quarterback Zach Collaros being named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player for a second consecutive season and the first 1,000-yard rushing campaign in Brady Oliveira’s career.

A consistent presence at right tackle for the Blue Bombers since 2016, Hardrick was a CFL All-Star in 2021 and was named to the CFL Players’ Association All-Star squad in 2022.

He has now appeared in 115 regular season CFL games, including 95 as a member of the Blue Bombers, 12 with the B.C. Lions in 2014 and eight with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2015 and was a member of Winnipeg’s back-to-back Grey Cup teams in 2019 and 2021.

Hardrick began his college days at Fort Scott Community College before transferring to Nebraska. He had tryouts with Tampa Bay and New Orleans before coming north to the CFL.

WBB-D2: Northwestern Oklahoma State Rangers (7-3) at Henderson State Reddies (6-6)

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Henderson State returns to the Duke Wells Center on Thursday to host GAC foe Northwestern Oklahoma State at 5:30 p.m.

REDDIES REPORT
Last time out, HSU(6-6, 3-3) fell to Southern Nazarene 63-47 inside the Sawyer Center. Little separated the two sides through the first two periods, with SNU leading 27-23 heading into halftime. After the break, a big second half by the Crimson Storm saw them pull away to a victory. Henderson finished the game shooting 26.8 percent from the floor, while Southern Nazarene shot 44.8 percent.

Sonni Martin led the team with a season-high 18 points against the Crimson Storm. The redshirt junior was 4-7 from deep, including a half-court shot made as the clock expired in the first period. JJ Eddens and Abbie Jiles each recorded a team-high six rebounds while scoring four and nine points, respectively.

Jill Thomas‘s team will face the number one scoring defense in the GAC against Northwestern Oklahoma State. This season the Reddies are averaging 67.2 points a game compared to NWOSU, who is only giving up 55.9 points per game. When Henderson has scored 70 or more points this season, the team is 4-0, including three conference victories, but when held to less, HSU is 2-6.

Through 12 games, the Reddies are shooting 36.5 percent from the field and 32.3 percent from the three-point line. Henderson is one of the more aggressive three-point shooting teams in the GAC, having attempted the third most shots from deep in the conference. When the Reddies have found success, they have hit big from deep, averaging 8.6 triples a game in their six wins.

In Thursday’s matchup, Henderson and Northwestern Oklahoma State will take the court for the 19th time. The Reddies have won seven straight home games over the Lady Rangers and lead the all-time series 11-7. The only loss HSU has to NWOSU inside the Duke Wells Center was a 99-97 defeat in the 2013-14 season. In the previous contest, HSU came away with an 87-78 victory over the Lady Rangers.

SCOUTING NORTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA STATE
The Lady Rangers faced Southern Arkansas and Arkansas-Monticello in their last round of matches. Northwestern Oklahoma State fell to the Muleriders 68-62 but returned to winning ways against the Blossoms, 59-52. After the two games, NWOSU sits 3-3 in GAC action with a 7-3 overall record.

Camille Thomas led the way for the Lady Rangers in the two games, scoring 25 points against SAU and 26 versus UAM. Thomas is shooting 61 percent from the floor this season on 82 attempts, which is second-best in the league. Northwestern Oklahoma State’s top shooter Faith Simpson is averaging 17.6 points a game and is one of four players averaging double-digit points.

NWOSU’s Carly Craig has picked out the open shooters all season for Lady Rangers, as the sophomore is averaging a league-high six assists per game. Along with providing the assists, Craig is third on the team in scoring (10.8) and second in steals (2.6).

MBB-D2: Northwestern Oklahoma State Rangers (5-5) at Henderson State Reddies (7-5)

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – After spending four days in Oklahoma, the Henderson State men’s basketball team returns to the confines of the Duke Wells Center for the season’s first meeting with Northwestern Oklahoma State Thursday, Jan. 12 at 7:30 p.m.

REDDIES REPORT
Henderson picked up its biggest win of the season during its most recent trip to the Sooner State, defeating Oklahoma Baptist, 75-72. The Reddies trailed by 11 points in the second half before mounting a comeback, thanks in part to Franck Kamgain scoring all 17 of his points in the final 20 minutes of game action. Tomislav Miholjcic recorded his second double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

After scoring 10 points against Southern Nazarene two days later, Kamgain became just the sixth HSU player in the Great American Conference era to have scored 10 or more points in 10 consecutive games. Kamgain, who leads the team with 13.7 points per game this season, is one point shy of having scored in double figures in all 12 games after putting up nine points against Minnesota St. in the second game of the season.

Henderson’s 48-point output against Southern Nazarene snapped a three-game scoring streak of 75 points or more for the Reddie offense. On defense, HSU continues to present one of the premier units in the league, holding teams to 67.1 points per game, which is fourth in the conference and 63rd out of 290 Division II teams.

Sitting at 4-2 in GAC play and fourth in the conference standings, Henderson has a chance to go on a bit of a run with five of their next seven opponents currently below .500 in the league. Those five teams have a combined GAC record of 8-22. Since the beginning of the 2021-22 season, HSU is 9-2 against those five programs, including winners of three of the last four against NWOSU.

The Reddies have enjoyed success over the Rangers since Jimmy Elgas took over head coaching duties in 2015. Under Elgas, HSU has never lost to Northwestern in Arkadelphia and has an 8-4 record against them in his seven full seasons. Thursday will be the nineteenth all-time meeting between the two programs with Henderson leading the series, 10-8.

SCOUTING NORTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA ST.
The Rangers come to Arkadelphia off its first conference win of the season after defeating Arkansas-Monticello, 82-74. That victory came at a much-needed time as NWOSU had lost five of their last six games prior to meeting the Boll Weevils. Thursday will be Northwestern’s third road GAC game of the season after dropping the first two away from Alva.

Northwestern does lay claim to Chaminade transfer Malik Parsons, the conference’s leading scorer. Through 10 games, Parson is averaging 22.6 points per game and has scored in double figures in each outing. The 6’3″ guard is shooting 54.2 percent from the floor and 41.9 percent from long range. Graduate student guard Brian Free backs up Parsons with 14.9 points as the only other Ranger to average over 10 points.

With the help of Parsons and Free, Northwestern is averaging 76.8 points per game, which is third in the GAC. Where both NWOSU and HSU excel is on the offensive glass with the Rangers averaging 11.9 offensive boards per game to the Reddies’ 11.6 for third and fourth in the conference, respectively. The difference may come down to defensive rebounding, which Henderson holds the per-game edge, 25.4 to 23.9.

CALGARY FLAMES NOTES:

FLAMES LAST GAME RECAP
JANUARY 10, 2023 – CALGARY FLAMES [3] vs. ST. LOUIS BLUES 4
The Calgary Flames continued a five-game Central Division road trip on Tuesday night for their first of back-to-back games against the Blues. St. Louis opened the scoring under four minutes in after a Pavel Buchnevich pass deflected off Chris Tanev’s stick and an unfortunate bounce would put the Flames down early. But Calgary responded after Nazem Kadri feathered a perfect back door pass to a streaking Milan Lucic who tapped home his fourth of the season to draw the Flames level. Shortly after, a Nikita Zadorov shot was redirected by Mikael Backlund past Jordan Binnington to give the Flames their first lead of the night and things would stay that way heading into the intermission. In the second, the Flames would make it three unanswered goals as Andrew Mangiapane took a pass from skate to stick and ripped home his eighth of the season, making it 3-1 Calgary through 40. In the third, the Blues would battle back to tie the game thanks to goals from Nikita Alexandrov and Jordan Kyrou to send the game to overtime. In the extra frame, the Blues would score just 28 seconds in to win 4-3.
