NBA Preview: Phoenix Suns (21-22) at Minnesota Timberwolves (20-22)

0

The Minnesota Timberwolves hope to locate their defense on Friday when they open a three-game homestand against the injury-riddled Phoenix Suns in Minneapolis.

The Timberwolves saw a four-game winning streak go by the boards against another short-handed team in the Detroit Pistons. The Pistons had their way with Minnesota on the offensive end Wednesday, much to the chagrin of Timberwolves coach Chris Finch.

The Suns also gave the scoreboard operator a bit of a workout in the first two games of the season series. Phoenix posted a 116-107 win over Minnesota on Nov. 1 and a 129-117 victory eight days later.

Timberwolves star Rudy Gobert collected 25 points and 11 rebounds in the game on Nov. 9. Although he had 16 and 14, respectively, on Wednesday, Gobert was left searching for answers.

Minnesota may have another thing to figure out, and that’s the health of Anthony Edwards. The former top overall pick initially was ruled out for the game in the third quarter with hip soreness before he returned in the fourth.

Phoenix is struggling to figure things out after the club fell for the 10th time in 12 outings following a 126-97 setback against the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday.

Torrey Craig scored 16 points and Josh Okogie added 14 off the bench for the Suns, who played without Deandre Ayton (left ankle sprain), Landry Shamet (right hip soreness), Chris Paul (sore right hip), Cameron Payne (right foot sprain), Devin Booker (left groin strain) and Cam Johnson (torn right meniscus).

Despite the injuries, Phoenix coach Monty Williams said he feels confident that the team can record positive results on its four-game road trip. The Suns opened the trek with a 125-113 victory over the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday before falling flat against Denver.

NBA Preview: Golden State Warriors (20-21) at San Antonio Spurs (13-29)

0

The San Antonio Spurs and Golden State Warriors will participate in a history-making game on Friday in the Alamo City.

The game will be played in the Alamodome in a game expected to break the NBA regular-season attendance record. As of Wednesday, the Spurs had sold more than 63,000 tickets, which eclipses the standing record of 62,046 that watched the Bulls and Hawks play in 1998 in the Georgia Dome.

The stated capacity for the Alamodome for Friday’s game is 68,000, which would include standing room tickets. The previous record for an NBA game at the stadium, which was the home of the Spurs from 1993-2002, is 39,554 for San Antonio’s Game 2 win against the Knicks in the 1999 NBA Finals.

The largest crowd in NBA history was established in 2010 when 108,713 fans saw the All-Star Game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

While the excitement of playing in front of such a large crowd is palpable, winning the contest would be even sweeter, especially for the Spurs. The team is celebrating its 50th anniversary in the 2022-23 season, the first half of which has been, at best, a struggle.

The Spurs have dropped three straight games and six of their last seven, while short-handed Golden State has also lost three consecutive games, all at home.

San Antonio heads home after a 135-129 defeat in Memphis on Wednesday that followed a 121-113 loss to the Grizzlies on Monday. Keldon Johnson returned after missing three games with a hamstring injury and led the Spurs with 24 points in Wednesday’s loss.

Tre Jones added 22 points, Jakob Poeltl racked up 17 points and 12 rebounds, Doug McDermott scored 15 points, Zach Collins amassed 14 points and 12 rebounds, Josh Richardson scored 12 and Jeremy Sochan hit for 11 for San Antonio.

The Spurs trailed for the majority of the game but cut Memphis’s lead to three points on Richardson’s jumper with 2:41 to play. But San Antonio could not get over the hump.

The Warriors travel to San Antonio after a 125-113 loss to Phoenix on Tuesday that spoiled the return of Stephen Curry to the Golden State lineup. Curry missed the previous 11 games with a separated shoulder and hit for 24 points to augment the game-high 29 by Klay Thompson and Jordan Poole’s 27 points off the bench.

The Warriors couldn’t beat a Phoenix team that was without six of its regular rotation players, epitomizing Golden State’s ragged performance over the season’s first 41 games in defense of its title.

The North Texas native plays internationally for the Mexican Women’s National Team

HOUSTON – The Houston Dash acquired forward Diana Ordóñez and the No. 30 overall pick in 2023 from the North Carolina Courage in a pre-draft trade, both teams announced today.

“We are incredibly excited to welcome Diana to Houston. She will add tremendous horsepower to our attack,” Dash general manager Alex Singer said. “The record breaking 11 goals scored during her rookie season are just a glimpse of what she will bring to the team. “Since her professional debut, Diana has shown that she is a skilled finisher in the box,” Dash head coach Sam Laity said. “She was a player that I dreaded going against last season, and I am happy she will be on our side next season. Diana is the kind of player we want on our front line – fast, creative, and deadly in attack. I am excited to have her join us in Houston.”

Ordóñez played collegiately at the University of Virginia, where she finished with 59 starts, 62 appearances and scored 45 career goals, the third most in Virginia history.

The Prosper, Texas native was a three-time All-ACC selection and three-time ACC Championship All-Tournament Team selection. She was named a 2021 MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist in her senior season and named a 2021 All-American by the United Soccer Coaches.

At an international level, Ordóñez represents Mexico with fellow Dash teammate forward María Sánchez. The forward burst onto the international scene with a brace after coming in as a second half substitute.

Orlando Pride Adds a Pair of Defenders, Three Forwards in 2023 NWSL Draft

Pride select Florida State-product Emily Madril third overall

ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando Pride selected defender Emily Madril with the third overall pick at the 2023 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Draft out of Florida State University. In addition, the Pride opted to select Messiah Bright at No. 21 overall out of Texas Christian University followed by Tori Hansen three picks later out of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Entering the day with both the No. 29 and No. 34 overall pick, the Pride traded both selections to the Washington Spirit for $75,000 in Allocation Money. With two picks in the fourth round, the side selected forward Summer Yates at No. 39 overall out of the University of Washington before wrapping up the evening by taking forward and Orlando native Kristen Scott out of the University of Central Florida with the No. 41 overall selection.

“We’re really pleased. Obviously we got some very exciting players, players that cover a lot of positions of need as well. Overall, we’re really excited and really pleased with the picks that we have,” Head Coach Seb Hines said following the draft. “[We gained] variety. We highlighted key players in key positions and you look at the picks that we got, they can come in and make an immediate impact to the team. I spoke about having a competitive environment in our training and I think we have that in our draft picks.”

A two-time NCAA National Champion, Madril joins the Pride following a decorated collegiate career in Tallahassee, finishing her time at Florida State with 62 appearances, 61 starts, six goals and seven assists. Named the 2021 ACC Defensive Player of the Year, Madril led the Seminoles with 2,306 minutes, anchoring a defense that allowed just 13 goals in 25 games, securing 14 clean sheets on the season en route to the program’s third national title. That same year, she earned United Soccer Coaches All-American honors, while also being named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Atlantic Region First Team, TopDrawer Soccer Best XI First Team, College Cup All-Tournament Team, ACC All-Tournament Team and All-ACC First Team.

The year prior marked the Navarre, Fla. native’s return to the pitch following back-to-back ACL tears that sidelined her for the 2018 and 2019 seasons, playing all but 10 minutes in 16 matches for the Seminoles in 2020. Her return to the pitch saw her earn United Soccer Coaches Second Team All-American honors, while also being named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Atlantic Region First Team, TopDrawerSoccer Best XI First Team, College Cup All-Tournament team and the All-ACC Second Team.

In 2022, Madril elected to forgo her final season at Florida State, signing a contract directly with the NWSL, which now sees her signed with the Pride through the 2025 season. The contract allowed the defender to then be loaned to Swedish side BK Häcken FF before returning for the 2023 NWSL Draft.

While in Sweden, Madril made four appearances on the backline, netting one goal during her short-term stint, scoring on her first touch of the game in an Oct. 31 win over AIK.

A two-time United Soccer Coaches All-American, Bright comes to Orlando following five years at TCU, finishing her collegiate career with 102 games played for the Horned Frogs, all of which were starts, scoring 50 goals and notching 17 assists to become the program’s all-time leader in goals and points (118). She earned both United Soccer Coaches All-Midwest and All-Big 12 honors in each of her five years in Fort Worth, highlighted by a 17-finish campaign to set the program record for goals in a single-season in 2021.

In 2022, Bright posted double-digit goals for the third time in her NCAA career, netting 10 for the Horned Frogs as they made a run to their third-consecutive Sweet 16 appearance. At the international level, she earned a call-up to the U-23 U.S. Women’s National Team the same year.

A finalist for the 2023 Honda Sport Award, Hansen comes to the Pride following a senior season that saw her log 2,271 minutes for the Tar Heels while leading all Power Five defenders with eight goals scored as the side finished as runner-ups in the 2022 NCAA College Cup. The Raleigh, North Carolina native anchored a defense that posted an ACC-best 14 shutouts in 2022, earning United Soccer Coaches All-America Second Team honors, as well as All-Atlantic Region First Team and First Team All-ACC. Through four years in Chapel Hill, Hansen appeared 65 times, starting 28 matches while netting nine goals and tallying four assists.

A four-time All-Pac-12 selection, Yates finishes a five-year career at Washington with 93 appearances, 86 starts, scoring 27 goals and adding 23 assists. In 2022, she led the Huskies with seven goals, six assists and 20 points, starting all 19 matches for the side. As a junior, Yates earned United Soccer Coaches All-American Second Team honors while landing on the All-Pacific Region Team for the second-consecutive year. On the international stage, Yates has appeared for the U.S. U-20 Women’s National Team, lifting a Concacaf Championship in 2020 for the Stars & Stripes.

The American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year, Scott joins her hometown club after finishing her time at UCF with 72 appearances, 68 starts, netting 33 goals and notching 11 assists. In 2022, Scott earned American Athletic First-Team honors for the second-consecutive year, matching her career high in points with 23 behind nine goals and five assists. The year prior she netted a career-high 10 goals to lead the Knights, starting in all 16 matches for the side. As a rookie in 2019, Scott was named to the American Athletic Conference All-Rookie Team, starting all 18 matches as a freshman.

The Orlando Pride will open the 2023 NWSL season the weekend of March 25. Season tickets for the upcoming campaign are available now, with more information here.

NBA Preview: New York Knicks (23-19) at Washington Wizards (18-24)

0

The New York Knicks continue to ride the roller coaster, relieved to be on the way up again with five victories in six games after a late-December swoon.

The Knicks will look to continue in a positive direction Friday night, when they visit the Washington Wizards in the first game of the season between the longtime Eastern Conference rivals.

Both teams were off Thursday after fending off late comebacks to earn wins at home Wednesday night.

Jalen Brunson scored seven of his game-high 34 points in the final three minutes as the Knicks beat the Indiana Pacers, 119-113. Kyle Kuzma drained the tiebreaking 3-pointer with 5.7 seconds left for the Wizards, who edged the Chicago Bulls 100-97.

New York outlasted the Pacers two nights after its four-game winning streak ended with a 111-107 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks. Prior to this week, the Knicks hadn’t alternated a loss with a win since Nov. 27-29, when they fell to the Memphis Grizzlies before routing the Detroit Pistons 140-110.

The Knicks lost to the Bucks on Nov. 30 to begin a two-game losing streak, which was followed by an eight-game winning streak from Dec. 4-20. That was followed by the five-game losing streak before New York beat the Houston Rockets on Dec. 31 to start the latest surge.

The Knicks never trailed Wednesday and appeared well on their way to a win when they led by 25 points shortly before the midway point of the third quarter.

But the Pacers stormed back and got within 105-103 on Buddy Hield’s 3-pointer with 3:10 left in the game. Brunson responded with five straight points for New York, which iced the victory when Quentin Grimes sank a 3-pointer with 25 seconds left to extend the lead to 115-109.

The Wizards displayed some inconsistency but also some resolve in snapping a three-game losing streak.

Washington, playing without its top two leading scorers — Bradley Beal and Kristaps Porzingis — due to injuries, trailed 59-46 at the half before outscoring the Bulls 41-21 in the third.

The teams combined for just 30 points in a grinding fourth quarter, when the Bulls got within three points four times before Zach LaVine drained a game-tying 3-pointer with 30 seconds remaining. But after a timeout, Kuzma sank his 3-pointer — the only 3 made in seven fourth-quarter attempts by the Wizards.

LaVine then missed a 16-footer and Deni Avdija grabbed the rebound for the Wizards, who out-rebounded the Bulls 15-10 in the fourth. The Wizards allowed just five second-chance points in the final period, including LaVine’s game-tying 3-pointer, which he hit after Chicago called timeout following an offensive rebound by Patrick Williams.

NBA Preview: Atlanta Hawks (19-22) at Indiana Pacers (23-19)

0

Two teams going in different directions will take the court Friday when the Indiana Pacers host the Atlanta Hawks for the second of three meetings this season.

The Pacers, despite their 119-113 loss to the New York Knicks on Wednesday, have won six of their last eight games. The Hawks, coming off a 114-105 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks, have lost six of their last eight.

The Pacers won the first game between the teams, 129-114 on Dec. 27 thanks to a 28-point, nine-rebound performance from Buddy Hield. The teams finish their season series on March 25 in Atlanta.

Hield was nearly the hero again against the Knicks. His four-point play with 1:22 left cut the margin to three points, but he missed a shot on the ensuing possession that would have tied the game. He scored 31 points on 11-of-20 shooting, including seven 3-pointers, and had eight rebounds. Hield is averaging 18.3 points.

The Pacers will be without leading scorer and NBA assists leader Tyrese Haliburton, who hurt his left elbow and left knee against the Knicks and left the arena on crutches.

Haliburton underwent an MRI exam on Thursday and the Pacers said he was diagnosed with a left elbow sprain and mild left knee bone contusion. The team said it is awaiting further information from the scans and that Haliburton would be re-evaluated in approximately two weeks.

Haliburton was injured in the third quarter when he landed awkwardly on a contested layup, losing his shoe on the play. Haliburton is averaging 20.2 points, 10.2 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 1.8 steals.

The Hawks played without All-Star guard Trae Young on Wednesday against the Bucks. Young, who averages 27.5 points and 9.8 assists, was out with a non-COVID related illness. He is expected to play Friday.

Atlanta could have used Young when it erased a 24-point second-half deficit against the Bucks and took a one-point lead late in the fourth quarter but then could not hold on.

Veteran Bogdan Bogdanovic came off the bench to lead the Hawks with 22 points. But Atlanta struggled without Young and center Clint Capela, who has missed eight straight games with a nagging right calf strain. Capela will sit again Friday.

The Hawks may be ready to use veteran Derrick Favors to help inside. Atlanta signed Favors to a 10-day contract, even though he has not played all season. He could alleviate some of the pressure on Onyeka Okongwu, who has started in Capela’s absence.

Favors averaged 5.3 points and 4.7 rebounds last season with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Hawks veteran Frank Kaminsky got extended minutes on Wednesday and produced a season-high 13 points.

Pacers center Myles Turner (back spasms) is listed as questionable.

NBA Preview: New Orleans Pelicans (25-17) at Detroit Pistons (12-33)

0

The New Orleans Pelicans go from one extreme to the other in their current five-game road trip.

The Boston Celtics notched their NBA-best 30th victory with a 125-114 win over the Pelicans on Wednesday. New Orleans now visits Detroit on Friday — the Pistons lead the league in losses with 33.

The Pelicans have the Western Conference’s third-best record but have lost five of their last seven games. They’re trying to survive without two of their top players, as Zion Williamson (hamstring) and Brandon Ingram (toe contusion) remain out indefinitely.

New Orleans stuck close most of the way in Boston behind CJ McCollum, who poured in 38 points.

That’s reflected in the monthly statistics. McCollum has appeared in five games this month, averaging 30.8 points and 4.6 assists.

The Pistons have been dealing with a number of frontcourt injuries this week, which could help Jonas Valanciunas bounce back from an off night in Boston. After posting 27 points and 12 rebounds in 28 minutes during a victory over Washington on Monday, Valanciunas was limited to 13 points and four rebounds in 23 minutes against the Celtics.

New Orleans collected a 104-98 home win over the Pistons last month as Williamson racked up 29 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.

Despite frontcourt starters Jalen Duren (ankle) and Isaiah Stewart (shoulder) being sidelined, the Pistons snapped a three-game losing streak by defeating Minnesota 135-118 on Wednesday.

Third-string center Nerlens Noel has been thrust into the starting lineup the last two games. He led Detroit’s defense on Wednesday by making four blocks and three steals.

The Pistons bounced back from a woeful performance the previous night, when they allowed a season-high 147 points to the Philadelphia 76ers.

Detroit got a big boost from Bojan Bogdanovic, who missed the Sixers game with left calf soreness. He had 27 points, six rebounds and four assists. Saddiq Bey scored a season-high 31 points.

New York, N.Y., – New York City Football Club (NYCFC) today announced that it has claimed forward Gabriel Segal off waivers.

The Bethesda, Maryland native arrives in New York from FC Köln in Germany after joining from Stanford University. Due to the fact that Segal played at the collegiate level in the U.S., the forward had to be acquired off waivers in order to play for a Major League Soccer (MLS) club.

Sporting Director David Lee said: “We would like to welcome Gabe to New York City Football Club. He is a young, talented, domestic attacker who had an excellent collegiate career at Stanford alongside playing for the United States Youth National Team. We are excited to have the opportunity to continue his development.

“The addition of NYCFC II to our player development pathway allows us to take advantage of these opportunities with the ability to play regular minutes in MLS NEXT Pro competition.”

While in Germany, Segal appeared in 12 matches and provided an assist for FC Köln II. During Segal’s collegiate career with the Cardinals, the forward played in 54 games, scoring 14 goals and five assists, winning a Pac-12 Championship and earning an All-Pac-12 selection during the 20/21 season.
