NBA Playoff Round 1 Game 2 Preview: New York Knicks (1-0) at Cleveland Cavaliers (0-1)

0

Josh Hart, a swingman for the New York Knicks, arrived at his press conference following Saturday’s game wearing a T-shirt designed by Jalen Brunson.

However, perhaps Brunson and the remainder of the Knicks ought to have been donning Hart Shirts.

Now that Hart’s condition is uncertain due to a sprained ankle, the Knicks will play the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 2 of the best-of-seven series on Tuesday night in an effort to extend their lead in the Eastern Conference first round.

In the fourth quarter of Saturday night’s game, when the Knicks lost all of their 10-point lead but recovered to defeat the Cavaliers 101-97, Hart and Brunson each had big games.

Together, they scored 16 of the Knicks’ 23 points in the fourth quarter. They were especially effective in the last two minutes, when they scored the first seven points of the Knicks’ 9-4 run that won the game.

Jarrett Allen’s tip-in with 2:12 remaining gave the Cavaliers a 93-92 lead, which they maintained with nine straight points. When Donovan Mitchell missed a potential go-ahead three-pointer with 1:32 remaining after a timeout, Hart made a long 3-pointer and got the rebound.

After that, Brunson made a stepback jumper from the foul line to make it 97-93 in favor of the Knicks. Mitchell depleted a couple of free tosses, and Hart missed a long 2-pointer before Brunson changed over a floater.

Brunson procured the Shirt treatment by scoring 21 focuses in the last part in the wake of being restricted to nine minutes in light of foul difficulty in the main half. However, Hart’s rare bench double-double set the tone for New York, which outscored the Cavaliers’ reserves 37-14.

Hart had 17 focuses and 10 bounce back, the main Knicks save with a twofold in a season finisher game since J.R. Smith had 15 focuses and 10 bounce back against the Indiana Pacers on May 18, 2013.

However, Hart also suffered a left ankle sprain during the game and was limited in Monday’s practice. The Knicks recorded him as far fetched for Game 2 and Knicks mentor Tom Thibodeau said Hart’s status will rely heavily on how he feels Tuesday morning.

While primarily relying on Mitchell and Allen, the Cavaliers, who are in the playoffs without LeBron James for the first time since spring 1998, nearly won. Allen recorded a double-double in 43 minutes with 14 points and 14 rebounds, while Mitchell scored 38 points in 43:38 of play.

However, the Cavaliers were reminded by the complete nature of the Knicks’ victory and the urgency with which New York played the final minutes that they will likely need to put in a more balanced effort in order to win their first playoff series since James’ final season in charge in the spring of 2018.

Darius Garland of the Cavaliers, who played 43 minutes, joined Mitchell and Allen in playing at least 40 minutes on Saturday. Only Hart, Julius Randle, RJ Barrett, and Hart of the Knicks played more than 30 minutes. Forward Cedi Osman drove Cavaliers saves with nine places.

Penn Entertainment Downgraded

Shares of Penn Entertainment (NASDAQ: PENN) traded lower Monday after an analyst downgraded the stock, noting it’s fairly valued at current levels.

In a note to clients on Monday, JMP Securities analyst Jordan Bender downgraded shares of the regional casino operator to “market perform” from “market outperform,” pointing out the stock is “fairly valued” following a lengthy run of lagging its peer group. Penn stock is down 4.33% year to date and lost a quarter of its value over the past 12 months.

The analyst added the “risk-reward is more favorable in other companies” in his coverage universe.

Penn Entertainment Pluses, Minuses

In February, Penn unveiled 2023 guidance of revenue of $6.15 billion to $6.58 billion and adjusted EBITDAR of $1.875 billion to $2.0 billion.

“The integration of the in-house technology stack in the US will be a positive step for its online business, but will not be enough to offset the market share decline and valuation re-rate moving forward,” Bender observed. “While we acknowledge the underperformance in the last year vs. the SP500, we find more attractive risk-reward in other areas of the gaming sector with growth projects, online exposure, and capital return programs.”

Penn Entertainment reports first-quarter earnings on May 4. That report could include updates on Barstool Sportsbook performance, among other tidbits that analysts and investors widely follow.

Preference for Churchill Downs

As noted above, Bender sees better risk/reward opportunities in his coverage space than Penn Entertainment. One of those ideas is Churchill Downs (NASDAQ: CHDN).

Just weeks before the Kentucky Derby, Bender bumped his price target on that gaming stock to $298 from $278 while reiterating an “outperform” rating on the shares. The new price forecast implies upside of 16.4% from the April 14 close.

Bender noted the first quarter was a positive stretch for land-based gaming in North America. He sees sports betting in the region growing at a compound annual rate of 20% over the next five years, with iGaming posting a compound annual growth rate of 19% over the same period. Those are potential positives for shares of Churchill Downs.

That stock is up 20.35% year to date and resides just 3.66% off its 52-week high.

DraftKings Aims for Market Share Crown in Massachusetts, Its Home State

Online sports betting recently debuted in Massachusetts. Not surprisingly, DraftKings (NASDAQ: DKNG) is aiming for the top market share in its home state.

Founded 11 years ago in Boston, DraftKings is the largest publicly traded gaming company based in New England and the only one that calls Massachusetts home. Whether there’s a material home field advantage for the operator in its home state remains to be seen, but internet search data indicate locals are perusing DraftKings more than rival FanDuel.

The “different” the research firm is referencing is the point that in nearly every state in which it offers online sports wagering, FanDuel is the market share king. FanDuel controls more of the US mobile sports betting market than rivals DraftKings and BetMGM combined.

DraftKings Spending Big in Massachusetts

While DraftKings is focusing on costs and profitability — moves that paved the way for a first-quarter rebound in the stock — it’s spending mightily to attract new customers in its home state.

“That’s no surprise. We expect DraftKings to go hard after the number one spot in its home state,” added the research firm.

DraftKings employs more than 2,000 people in Boston though that number could drift lower following a February announcement in which the company said it is trimming its headcount by as much as 3.5%. The company’s second-largest US office will be located in Las Vegas where it currently doesn’t book bets.

Home Field Advantage Doesn’t Always Materialize

Other Massachusetts sportsbook operators may have home field advantages, too. Penn Entertainment’s Barstool Sportsbook was born out of the operator’s relationship and subsequent acquisition of Barstool Sports, which like DraftKings, was started in Boston.

Likewise Wynn Resorts runs Encore Boston Harbor and its WynnBET unit is operational in Massachusetts. So is BetMGM, which is half-owned by MGM Resorts International — the operator of MGM Springfield.

Casino operators with digital units are realizing benefits from those businesses, including luring active players to land-based casinos. Additionally, it’s possible that BetMGM and WynnBET can leverage ties to brick-and-mortar gaming venues in Massachusetts for increased online client rolls.

However, there are no direct correlations between operating casinos and online sports betting market share. FanDuel and DraftKings are tops in this segment and neither runs a land-based gaming venue.

Boyd Gaming Revenue Could Pop on Regional Casino Strength

Boyd Gaming (NYSE: BYD) stock is on a tear this year, soaring 20.92%, but there could be upside to that performance due to strength in regional casinos.

In a note to clients Monday, JPMorgan analyst Joseph Greff reiterated an “overweight” rating on the Orleans operator with a $75 price target. That implies upside of 13.65 from today’s close. As is the case with so many casino equities, Boyd’s share price could be driven more by the broader economy than its own strong fundamentals.

The JPMorgan analyst also applauded Boyd for its strong balance sheet and commitment to shareholder rewards, including share buybacks. At the end of last year, the operator had $283.5 million cash on hand. In February, it announced an almost 7% increase to its quarterly dividend.

Regional, Las Vegas Duopoly Benefits

Boyd runs 10 gaming venues in its home market, including Aliante, California, Cannery, Fremont, Gold Coast, Jokers Wild, Main Street Station, Sam’s Town, Suncoast, and The Orleans.

The major difference between the two, however, is Boyd has operations in several states outside of Nevada — a trait not sported by Red Rock. That’s to the benefit of the former because Greff expects Boyd will post first-quarter revenue of $440 million from its Midwest, South and West operations, up from a prior forecast of $414 million.

The analyst also modeled $14 million in sales from Boyd’s digital unit and $15 million in management fees tied to the company’s management agreement with a tribal casino in Northern California.

Other Boyd Benefits

The Suncoast operator continues sporting healthy operating margins and robust free cash flow-generating capabilities, which are being directed to investors in the form of buybacks and dividends. Last year, Boyd allocated $600 million to shareholder rewards, buying back $107 million of its stock in the fourth quarter alone. The company said it has $239 million remaining on previously announced repurchase programs.

As for the operator’s Las Vegas locals and downtown casinos, that group is proving steady though not necessarily overwhelming at the moment.

That segment is “undemanding … nor have we changed our 2Q23-through-2024 estimates and still see a relatively healthy and stable gaming consumer, with the only legitimate nit being the state of the low-end consumer,” concluded Greff.

NWSL Challenge Cup Preview: OL Reign vs. Angel City FC

BMO Stadium | Los Angeles, California – Wednesday, April 19 at 10:00 PM ET

Players to watch:

Angel City midfielder Savannah McCaskill was one of her side’s standout performers in the 2022 Challenge Cup, scoring one of her two all-time Challenge Cup goals against the Wave. In two Challenge Cup campaigns—one with Angel City, one with Chicago—McCaskill has also added two assists to her two goal tally. In three regular season games, McCaskill has scored one goal and is joined by teammates Katie Johnson (2), Claire Emslie (1), and Alyssa Thompson (1) on the scoresheet.

OL Reign forward Bethany Balcer and midfielders Jess Fishlock and Olivia Van der Jagt are the Reign’s three goalscorers in three regular season games, with Fishlock and Balcer scoring in the club’s 2-0 win over Gotham and Van der Jagt scoring in the 96th minute against San Diego last weekend helping them earn their second regular season win. Though she has only appeared once in 2023, the Reign’s Veronica Latsko has played the most games of any player in Challenge Cup history, having seen the field in 18 different games. In addition to being the most by any player, it is also more than any single team has played in Challenge Cup history (six teams with 17).

Match facts: Angel City returns to BMO Stadium on Wednesday night as the club welcomes the OL Reign to Los Angeles in the final game of the evening’s action. The hosts enter after a win and draw in their last two games, while the visiting Reign have won both of their last two regular season games, one of which was on the road.

Angel City has won one, drawn one, and lost one to start the regular season, losing 2-1 in its season opener against Gotham FC before defeating Orlando, 2-1, on the road and drawing 2-2 with Racing Louisville at home last weekend. In last year’s competition, all four points that Angel City collected (W1 D1 L1) came at home as they managed to score a goal in each of the three home matches. The only visiting team to win at Angel City during last year’s Challenge Cup, though, was the Reign.

OL Reign come in with momentum on their side after collecting back-to-back shutout wins over Gotham FC on the road and against San Diego in the club’s home opener. Those wins come after being shutout, 1-0, in Washington against the Spirit in the season opener. One of the more efficient sides in Challenge Cup history, the Reign have lost just two of their 16 all-time matches in the competitions (W7 D7, including their elimination on penalties in last year’s semifinals). The two losses are tied for the fewest of any active team in the competition’s history with North Carolina (17 games played).

OL Reign has won all four of their meetings with Angel City FC, with two wins apiece in regular season and Challenge Cup action. The Reign are the only club that Angel City has never earned a result against in all NWSL competitions.

NWSL Challenge Cup Preview: Portland Thorns FC vs. San Diego Wave FC

Snapdragon Stadium | San Diego, California – Wednesday, April 19 at 10:00 PM ET

Players to watch:

San Diego forward Alex Morgan’s four career Challenge Cup goals came last season with the Wave. While none of those goals came against Portland, Morgan did have an assist against the Thorns in last year’s Challenge Cup meeting at Providence Park. Morgan already has three regular season goals in three games as well, with teammates Jaedyn Shaw (2) and Amirah Ali (1) the only other players to have scored this season.

Portland forward Sophia Smith has already lit up the scoresheet in 2023, scoring four goals in three regular season games to leap to an early lead in the regular season Golden Boot race. Smith also has two assists, one of which came in one of attacker Crystal Dunn’s two regular season goals making her the only other Thorns player to have scored more than one goal (Sugita, Vasconcelos, Weaver – 1) so far this season. Attacker Morgan Weaver has scored one goal in all three editions of the Challenge Cup as well. Weaver, whose first professional goal came in the 2020 Challenge Cup, is one of six players to have scored in each Challenge Cup.

Match facts: San Diego Wave FC kicks off its second-ever Challenge Cup against Portland Thorns FC on Wednesday night, with both sides looking to maintain good starts to their 2023 seasons. San Diego won its first two opening games before dropping their most recent match, 1-0, against OL Reign, while Portland also won its two opening games before drawing 1-1 with the Houston Dash in their third match.

The Wave started out by scoring three goals each game in back-to-back wins over Chicago and North Carolina. In that stretch were the goals from Morgan, Shaw, and Ali, though the side was unable to find a goal against OL Reign last weekend. In their debut in the Challenge Cup last season, San Diego scored nine goals in its six games. The team’s goals per game average in the competition of 1.5 is the second highest of any club in Challenge Cup history (North Carolina – 1.9).

On the other side, Portland enters still unbeaten through their three regular season games, scoring four goals per game in their first two games before their 1-1 draw against the Dash last weekend. The club’s five goal-scorers are the most of any team in the league. Now, Portland embarks on a quest to win its second Challenge Cup in three years after winning 2021. Last year, Portland allowed just five goals in the group stage but didn’t advance due to two losses and a draw (W3). The five goals allowed were tied for the fewest conceded in last year’s group stage with the Reign.

The Thorns and Wave met five times in 2022 with Portland scoring three victories (D1 L1), which included a Challenge Cup sweep and a 2-1 win in the NWSL Playoffs. The Thorns earned a regular season draw and a Challenge Cup win in two visits to San Diego last season with Sophia Smith scoring in both games.

NWSL Challenge Cup Preview: Kansas City Current vs. Houston Dash

Shell Energy Stadium | Houston, Texas – Wednesday, April 19 at 7:30 PM ET

Players to watch:

Houston attacker María Sánchez has scored two goals in three regular season games already, with both goals coming in each of the Dash’s last two games. Teammate Diana Ordóñez is the only other player to have netted once, scoring in the club’s victory over Chicago. In addition, defender Katie Lund has started 17 different Challenge Cup matches, all for the Dash, which is the most of any player in the history of the cup. Lind is also the only player to have played at least 1500 minutes in the competition (1511).

Kansas City has seen three different players score in the regular season for them in three games, with midfielder Debinha and forwards Cece Kizer and Mimmi Larsson all finding the back of the net. Debinha, who switched over from North Carolina in the offseason, has been named Challenge Cup MVP in each of the last two competitions, leading the Courage to a championship win last season. Her nine all-time goals in the competition are two more than any other player.

Match facts: The Houston Dash host the Kansas City Current in the third game of Wednesday night’s Challenge Cup opening evening. The Dash are entering in three games unbeaten in the regular season, with draws against Racing Louisville and Portland sandwiched by a win over Chicago. The Current, however, have lost all three of their regular season matches, dropping results against North Carolina, Portland, and Chicago.

Houston won the inaugural Challenge Cup in 2020 but struggled in the 2022 edition, losing four of six matches (W2). Dating back to 2021, Houston has conceded at least once in eight straight games in the competition, the longest such streak in Challenge Cup history. However, their regular season games to date have seen them gain an impressive five points, earning a shutout against Racing Louisville, defeating Chicago on the road, and earning a point on the road against Portland.

Kansas City, meanwhile, has lost both of its regular season road games in the form of a 1-0 loss against North Carolina and a 4-2 loss against Chicago. Losing all three regular season games with a 4-1 home loss against Portland also against their record, the Current will relish an opportunity to prove their early results a fluke with a result in the Challenge Cup. In last year’s competition, Kansas City won four of its six group stage games (D1 L1) to secure a spot in the knockout rounds before falling to North Carolina in the semifinals. Eight of the Current’s 11 goals in last season’s cup were scored in the second half of matches.

The Current and Dash are meeting for the first time since Kansas City eliminated Houston from the 2022 NWSL playoffs with a 2-1 win. In all NWSL competitions, Kansas City has won five of its last six meetings with the Dash (L1), outscoring Houston by a 12-5 margin in that stretch.

NWSL Challenge Cup Preview: Washington Spirit vs. NJ/NY Gotham FC

Red Bull Arena | Harrison, New Jersey – Wednesday, April 19 at 7:30 PM ET

Players to watch:

Gotham forward Midge Purce is her side’s all-time leading scorer in the Challenge Cup with three goals scored. Purce also notched the only brace in Gotham’s Challenge Cup history with a two-goal performance against the Courage in 2021. In the regular season’s three games played, Purce’s two goals have her tied atop her team’s scoring charts alongside teammate and newcomer Lynn Williams, though Purce registered the assist on both of those goals.

No player has scored more goals in a single Challenge Cup than Washington forward Ashley Hatch, who scored six in the 2022 edition. Hatch has 26 career shots on target in Challenge Cup play, the most of any player in the competition’s history. Already through three regular season games, Hatch has three goals on seven shots with teammate Trinity Rodman (2) the only other player to have scored a goal this season.

Match facts: Gotham FC hosts the Washington Spirit on Wednesday night at Red Bull Arena looking to avenge a 3-1 loss in the same place 367 days prior in the 2022 Challenge Cup, which saw Washington end up reaching the final. Now, Gotham enter having won two of their first three regular season games, while the Spirit are off to their best start in club history remaining unbeaten through their first three games in a stretch that also includes two wins.

Gotham won just one game in the 2022 Challenge Cup group stage, a 1-0 win against Orlando in which Midge Purce secured the points with an 83rd minute winner. That was the peak of its Challenge Cup performances, though, as they finished third in their group with six points from six games. In addition, the club scored just five goals in the competition, the second fewest of any team (Orlando – 4). However, so far this year, Gotham have shown what they are capable of in the regular season with wins over Angel City and Orlando and a lone loss against OL Reign against their record. Most recently, both Purce and Williams scored late for Gotham to secure a 2-0 win against Orlando, their first shutout of the year.

Meanwhile, Washington has collected wins against OL Reign and the North Carolina Courage with their only other game of the year coming in the form of an entertaining 2-2 draw against Racing Louisville FC. Ashley Hatch and Trinity Rodman are the only players to have scored for the Spirit thus far, with Hatch contributing three in addition to Rodman’s two to help their form so far. The Spirit have scored 20 all-time goals in Challenge Cup play, which is the second most of any team in the competition’s history (North Carolina – 32). Last season, Washington notched 12 goals in the group stage, tied with the Courage for the most of any team.

Since the beginning of the 2018 season, Washington has shut out Gotham FC in nine of their 16 meetings in all NWSL competitions. The Spirit have seven wins in that time (D6 L3) including victories in both the last league and Challenge Cup match in the fixture.

NWSL Challenge Cup Preview: North Carolina Courage vs Orlando Pride

Exploria Stadium | Orlando, Florida – Wednesday, April 19 at 7:00 PM ET

Players to watch:

Of the seven goals scored in the Challenge Cup in team history, zero came from player that are currently on the Pride roster. Forward Ally Watt, though, did score for the OL Reign in their 1-1 draw with the Wave in their final game of last year’s group stage, which secured a spot for the team in the knockout rounds of the competition. The Pride have also scored just one goal in three games in the regular season thus far, though attacker Messiah Bright, who scored that goal, has looked more and more likely to continue finding the back of the net.

Courage forward Kerolin scored the opening goal in North Carolina’s 2-1 victory over Washington in the 2022 Challenge Cup Championship. The 10th-minute goal from the Brazilian international is the only goal ever scored in a Challenge Cup final by a player outside North America. Kerolin currently has two goals in three regular season games to kick off her 2023 campaign, with teammate Mille Gejl the only other goalscorer so far this year.

Match facts: The Orlando Pride welcome the North Carolina Courage to Exploria Stadium on Wednesday night in the opening match of the 2023 NWSL Challenge Cup. The Pride, who have lost all three of their regular season games thus far will meet a Courage side that has lost two of their first three games, their only win coming against the Kansas City Current in the season opener.

Orlando has not had a desirable start to the year, conceding eight goals and scoring just one in three losses against Portland, Angel City, and Gotham FC. Their lone goal came against Angel City as forward Messiah Bright equalizer for her side in the 51st minute, though the latest regular season goal in NWSL history by forward Katie Johnson swiped Orlando’s chance at a point off the table as Angel City won, 2-1. In Challenge Cup form, no team earned fewer points in the 2022 Challenge Cup than the Pride, who bookended four losses with a pair of draws. Orlando’s four total goals scored were the fewest in the competition last season, while its goal differential of minus-7 was tied for the lowest in the group stage (with Angel City).

Meanwhile, after a big 1-0 win over Kansas City to start the season, the North Carolina Courage enter Wednesday’s match after back-to-back losses against San Diego and Washington. A silver lining, forward Kerolin managed to score in both of those losses and was her side’s lone goalscorer (3-1 v. San Diego; 2-1 v. Washington). The Courage now look to defend their Challenge Cup crown from last season and are currently riding a 10-game unbeaten streak (W6 D4) in the competition dating back to 2021. That is the longest undefeated streak by any team in Challenge Cup history.

North Carolina has 11 wins in 19 matches (D4 L4) against the Pride all-time in NWSL competitions (league, Challenge Cup, Fall Series). The Courage have also won six of their last eight visits to Orlando (D1 L1) in all competitions, including going unbeaten in its last seven visits (W6 D1).
