NBA Preview: New York Knicks (25-21) at Atlanta Hawks (23-22)

0

During their four-game winning streak, the Atlanta Hawks are beginning to show the expected results from the offseason when they created a powerful backcourt by acquiring Dejounte Murray and pairing him with Trae Young.

The guards appear to be hitting their stride and will test their newfound compatibility Friday when the Hawks host the New York Knicks.

The Knicks, who have lost two straight, are tied for sixth in the Eastern Conference and the Hawks are 1 1/2 games behind them in eighth place.

This will be the third meeting between the teams after they split the first two in New York, with the Knicks winning the most recent contest, 113-89 on Dec. 7 at Madison Square Garden. The final meeting will be Feb. 15 in Atlanta.

The Hawks won their season-long fourth straight game Wednesday, beating the Dallas Mavericks 130-122 on the road. Murray scored 30 points and Young had 18 points and 12 assists.

Murray is averaging 28.3 points over the past three games and 20.6 points for the season. He has led the team in scoring 10 times. Young, who averages 27.1 and has led the team in scoring 27 times, said he’s less interested in padding his statistics and more interested in winning.

Young took a season-low 11 shots against Dallas while his 12 assists were his most since Jan. 2.

New York is coming off a 116-105 loss to Washington on Wednesday, when coach Tom Thibodeau bemoaned the lack of offense.

The Knicks are led by Julius Randle, who averages 24.2 points and 10.7 rebounds. Randle needs 23 points to catch Mark Jackson (5,544) for No. 24 on the Knicks’ all-time scoring list.

New York will be without Mitchell Robinson (7.2 points, 8.9 rebounds), who played only nine minutes against the Wizards before leaving with a fractured thumb. Robinson underwent surgery Thursday and will miss at least three weeks.

His absence would mean a larger role for Isaiah Hartenstein (5.1 points, 6.1 rebounds) and Jericho Sims (3.5 points, 4.2 rebounds).

NBA Preview: New Orleans Pelicans (26-19) at Orlando Magic (16-28)

0

The Orlando Magic will play their first home game in more than two weeks Friday night when they host the New Orleans Pelicans.

The Magic lost to the Denver Nuggets 119-116 on Sunday, leaving them 2-3 on their recent cross-country trip. They hope to fare better in their first game back home than the Pelicans did upon returning from a recent five-game trip.

New Orleans endured its worst defeat of the season Wednesday night, a 124-98 shellacking at the hands of the Miami Heat.

The Pelicans have been mostly competitive in the absence of injured starters Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram and Herbert Jones Jr., but that wasn’t the case against the Heat, who built a 20-point lead in the first quarter and coasted to their biggest margin of victory this season.

New Orleans had no answer for Bam Adebayo, whose 26 points led seven Miami scorers in double figures.

The Magic will be well rested after a five-day break between games. On Sunday, Denver’s Nikola Jokic made a tie-breaking 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds remaining to edge Orlando, but the Magic saw positives in the way they fought back from a 15-point deficit.

On the road trip, Orlando previously won at Golden State, lost in Sacramento, won in Portland and lost to the Jazz in Salt Lake City.

Miami Marlins sign two-time All-Star and 2015 World Series champion right-handed pitcher Johnny Cueto

0

MIAMI – The Miami Marlins today signed right-handed pitcher Johnny Cueto to a one-year contract, with a club option for 2024. Cueto is a two-time All-Star, in 2014 with Cincinnati and 2016 with San Francisco, and won a World Series championship with Kansas City in 2015. He finished second in the NL Cy Young Award voting in 2014.

Cueto, 36, made 25 appearances (24 starts) with the Chicago White Sox in 2022, going 8-10 with a 3.35 ERA (158.1 IP/59 ER). The 15-year veteran tossed at least 6.0 innings in 19 of his 24 starts, including four starts of 8.0 innings or more and tossed a complete game on Aug. 4 at Texas – his first since 2016. He posted a 3.5 WAR (wins above replacement) for the Sox.

Cueto has pitched to a 3.44 ERA and a 143-107 record in 355 career appearances (353 starts) across the big leagues with the Cincinnati Reds (2008-15), Kansas City Royals (2015), San Francisco Giants (2016-21), and the Chicago White Sox (2022). He stands as the last pitcher to throw a complete game in the World Series, doing so for the 2015 Kansas City Royals in Game 2 of their championship season.

Born in San Pedro de Marcoris, Dominican Republic, Cueto has posted the third-lowest ERA for a Dominican pitcher (min. 300 starts), behind only Juan Marichal (2.89) and Pedro Martinez (2.93). He led the Majors in strikeouts (243) and innings pitched (243.2) during the 2014 season. Among all active pitchers, he ranks sixth in innings pitched (2,192.2), seventh in wins (143), and 10th in strikeouts (1,812).

As a corresponding move, Miami has designated for assignment LHP Daniel Castano.

The Marlins begin the 2023 regular season on Thursday, March 30, facing the New York Mets at 4:10 p.m. on Opening Day at loanDepot park. Fans can secure their seats now to catch Marlins Baseball this season at Marlins.com/Tickets.

The Devils are set to conclude a season-long five game road trip and extend their winning streak to six games. The five-game winning streak is the team’s second longest stretch this season, while the team tied a franchise record 13-game winning streak from Oct. 25, 2022, to Nov. 21.
Per NHL Pr, the Devils aim to win all five games on a five game road trip for the second time in franchise history. The last time Jersey earned the feat was from March 10, 2001, to March 19. Keep in mind that the Devils also won five games during a 2008-09 road trip of six games (Jan. 10-19, 2009).

Jersey’s season-long five-game road trip:
1/10 at CAR, 5-3, W
1/13 at ANA, 6-2, W
1/14 at LAK, 5-2, W
1/16 at SJS, 4-3, Wso
1/19 at SEA

Jersey’s team is fresh off its 14th comeback victory, after also logging the team’s first shootout win for the 2022-23 campaign in a 4-3 win at San Jose. The Devils enter Monday’s contest with a 18-2-1 record on the road, and Jersey’s team is riding a seven-game winning streak on the road that dates to Dec. 21, at Florida. The 18 road victories rank first in the NHL while Seattle ranks second with 16 road wins this season. Keep in mind that New Jersey’s longest road winning streak in franchise history is 11 games, which was earned earlier this season via Oct. 20, 2022, to Dec. 3, 2022. The most road wins in a single season overall for franchise history is 28, which was earned in 1998-99 (28-10-3).

Per NHL Pr, the last time time that the Devils swept a California road trip was in the 2000-01 campaign from Nov. 22, 2000, to Nov. 25:
at ANA, 5-2, W
at LAK, 6-1, W
at SJS, 3-2, W

The recent trip to California marked the second time in franchise history that the Devils swept a full three-game California road trip.

Per NHL Pr, The Devils are the first team in NHL history who swept an Eastern and Western Canadian road trip, in addition to a California road trip. The guidelines for this matter are below:
• A “road trip” as being consecutive games played on the road
• The team must have played at least two of the teams mentioned sequentially
• Eastern Canada (TOR, OTT, MTL), Western Canada (WPG, EDM, CGY, VAN), California (ANA, LAK, SJS)
The Devils swept VAN, EDM & CGY via Nov. 1, 2022, to Nov. 5.
Jersey swept MTL, TML & OTT via Nov. 15, 2022, to Nov. 19.
The Devils swept ANA, LAK & SJS via Jan. 13, 2023, to Jan. 16.
The Devils are 21-0-1 when leading after the second period this season, which ranks second in the NHL behind Boston (23).
The Devils surpassed their win total from last season, which was 27 and in 39 games less played.
The team’s 29 wins after 44 games played from the start of a season are the second most in franchise history.
32 wins: 2009-10
29 wins: 2022-23
28 wins: 1997-98
The Devils are 9-1-1 when outshot by an opponent this season and 19-11-2 when outshooting teams. The Devils are 1-0- 0 when shots are even vs an opponent for 2022-23.
The Devils are now 13-2-1 vs the Western Conference and 10-0-0 vs the Pacific Division for 2022-23 campaign.
The 10 wins vs the Pacific Division tied a franchise record earned in 1996-97 for the most wins vs the Pacific Division.

GOLDEN KNIGHTS LAST GAME RECAP
January 16 – Vegas Golden Knights 0, Dallas Stars 4
The Vegas Golden Knights (28-15-2) were shut out by the Dallas Stars (26-12-7) in a 4-0 loss on Monday afternoon at T-Mobile Arena. Jamie Benn opened the scoring at 5:45 of the first period and the Stars took that lead into the intermission. In the middle frame, Joel Kiviranta extended the Dallas lead to 2-0. In the third, Ryan Suter and Tyler Seguin scored in the third to seal the 4-0 victory in Pete DeBoer’s return to Las Vegas.

LAST GAME BY THE NUMBERS

  • Monday was was the first time this season that the Golden Knights have been shut out
  • Reilly Smith matched his career high of hits in a game with 7 (last Nov. 7, 2015)

Killing It
The Vegas Golden Knights have been shorthanded 31 times in their last nine games and have allowed just three goals. Vegas’ penalty kill is at an all-time high, with a 89.7% kill percentage in the last seven games (4th in NHL).

Fourth Line Magic
The fourth line of Nicolas Roy, Keegan Kolesar, and William Carrier have accumulated a combined 12 points in six games (5-7—12) to be the highest offensive producing line for Vegas during the streak. Roy recently saw a four-game point streak come to an end on Saturday against Edmonton (3-2—5), and Kolesar and Carrier both had points in back-to-back games. All three were the key to Vegas’ comeback win over the Panthers on Jan. 12 after Roy’s goal put the Golden Knights on the board with a feed from Kolesar, and it was then Carrier who tallied his team-leading fifth game-winning goal of the season.

The Shorty King
Reilly Smith netted his fourth shorthanded goal of the season on Dec. 15 in Chicago, which leads the league. Smith’s 12 shorthanded goals since joining Vegas in 2017-18 are the most in franchise history. The Golden Knights lead the NHL with the most shorthanded goals by a team with seven on the season (tied with PHI).

Spreading the Wealth
Eight Golden Knights have recorded 20 or more points this season, and 13 have 10 or more. Chandler Stephenson leads the club with 40 points, followed by Mark Stone with 38 points, and Jack Eichel with 33 points.

Golden Knights Point Leaders

  1. Chandler Stephenson – 40 (11G, 29A)
  2. Mark Stone – 38 (17G, 21A)
  3. Jack Eichel – 33 (15G, 18A)
  4. William Karlsson – 30 (9G, 21A)
  5. Reilly Smith – 29 (18G, 11A)

Against the Red Wings
Vegas’ contest with Detroit on Thursday is the last of two meetings this season. The Golden Knights own a 4-3-1 record against the Red Wings, and went 1-1-0 in their series in 2021-22. In their previous meeting, Vegas came away with a dominant 4-1 win at Little Caesar’s Arena. Jack Eichel, Jonathan Marchessault, Phil Kessel, and Reilly Smith all scored to put the Golden Knights on top and Adin Hill made 24 saves good for a .96 save percentage. Vegas has the opportunity to sweep another regular season series with a win over Detroit (Chicago, Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg).
