NBA Preview: Philadelphia Sixers (29-16) at Sacramento Kings (26-18)

0

The Sacramento Kings are one of the NBA’s top surprises and are making a solid run at ending a 16-season playoff drought.

The Kings get another chance to prove they are for real on Saturday night when they host the powerful Philadelphia 76ers.

Sacramento will be attempting to match its season-best winning streak of seven games.

The Kings also will be aiming to snap an eight-game skid against the 76ers. Sacramento’s last win in the series was a 115-108 home decision on Feb. 2, 2019. De’Aaron Fox is the only current Kings’ player to participate in that game.

Philadelphia is equally hot, having won six of its past seven games, including all four heading into the finale of a five-game road trip.

While the 76ers were off Friday night, Sacramento was continuing its hot streak with a 118-113 home victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder.

All-Star candidates Fox (25 points) and Domantas Sabonis (fifth triple-double of the season) were key contributors as usual, but rookie Keegan Murray was the main man for the Kings.

Murray established season bests of 29 points and 14 rebounds while shooting 10 of 12, including 5 of 7 from 3-point range.

“Every shot I took was shots I’m good at,” said Murray, the No. 4 overall pick of the 2022 draft. “I didn’t try to rush anything. I let everything come to me, and that showed with good shot selection and me making shots.”

Sabonis, who returned from a one-game absence caused by an illness, was impressed with Murray’s arsenal.

“I told him to be aggressive,” Sabonis said. “He made a couple (shots) and they started pressuring him and he showed he has more to his game. He can dribble, he can penetrate, he can dunk on someone, he can find open guys. The more comfy he gets at playing this game, he’s going to be big for us.”

Sabonis recorded 18 points, 14 assists and 14 rebounds while stretching his franchise record to 21 consecutive double-doubles.

Meanwhile, Philadelphia star big man Joel Embiid ranks second in the NBA with a 33.6 scoring average and has scored 30 or more in each of his past seven games and 11 of his past 12 appearances.

Embiid had 32 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots on Thursday when the 76ers notched a 105-95 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers.

Philadelphia’s James Harden added 16 points, 14 assists and 10 rebounds for his fourth triple-double of this season and 73rd of his career.

Harden aggravated a foot injury during the contest and is listed as questionable for Saturday’s game.

Embiid and Harden have been teammates for 11-plus months, and Embiid is more than pleased with their partnership.

“I think from the beginning it was easy. When you’ve got two guys with high basketball IQs, you can figure out everything easy,” Embiid said of mixing well with Harden. “So it’s all about just playing off of each other. We’ve been doing a wonderful job of doing that.”

Philadelphia never trailed against Portland and led 57-34 at halftime. The 76ers were up by as many as 26 points before the Trail Blazers narrowed the gap late in the contest.

The 76ers are 8-2 in January, a strong follow-up to December, when they recorded a season-best, eight-game winning streak.

“I think we’re good, and I think we can be really, really good,” Philadelphia coach Doc Rivers said. “But we have work to do.”

Embiid poured in 31 points and Harden added 21 points, 15 assists and five steals as the 76ers rolled to a 123-103 home victory over the Kings on Dec. 13.

NBA Preview: Indiana Pacers (23-24) at Phoenix Suns (22-24)

0

The Phoenix Suns plan to put Cameron Johnson’s ramp-up to full participation on hold Saturday night, as they will rest the forward on the front end of a back-to-back with the Indiana Pacers in town.

Johnson was limited to 22 minutes in a 117-112 home win over the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday night in his first action since undergoing right knee surgery in November. He missed 37 games.

Phoenix made the most of Johnson’s return, using his 19 points, six rebounds and two blocks to help make up for the continued absences of Chris Paul (sore right hip) and Devin Booker (strained left groin). Johnson figures to return to the court on Sunday when the Suns play host to the Memphis Grizzlies.

The Nets likely weren’t surprised to see Johnson, but they were blindsided by a pair of unheralded Lees in the Thursday matchup, with Damion going for 16 points in a rare start and Saben chipping in with 15 points and six assists on the ninth day of a 10-day contract.

Among Saben Lee’s biggest fans was Johnson.

The Suns are expected to sign Saben Lee, a Phoenix-area high school product, to a second 10-day deal before the Saturday contest.

The Suns had lost three in a row — all on the road — before Johnson’s return against the Nets.

Next up, Phoenix gets to face an Indiana team that will be completing a back-to-back set.

The Pacers were once again without Tyrese Haliburton (sprained left knee and elbow) as they fell 134-111 at Denver on Friday night. The standout guard, who last played on Jan. 11, remains sidelined indefinitely.

The loss was the sixth straight for the Pacers, the third in a row to start a four-game trip that ends in Phoenix.

Indiana reserves Bennedict Mathurin and Chris Duarte had 19 and 18 points, respectively, against the Nuggets. The Pacers benefitted from the one-sided nature of the game in that it allowed coach Rick Carlisle to limit his starters to 25 or fewer minutes.

On a night when the Indiana backups outscored the team’s starters 67-44, the Pacers got scoring from seven different reserves, including Trevelin Queen, who connected on one of the team’s eight 3-pointers.

Queen, who is playing on a two-way contract, had a season-high 13 points in the previous game, on Wednesday at Oklahoma City. The 25-year-old credits Haliburton, three years his minor, with being a positive influence.

The Pacers and Suns will be meeting for the first time this season. The rematch is slated for Feb. 10 in Indianapolis.

Phoenix swept last year’s two-game season series, winning 113-103 at home in January in a game in which Paul and Booker combined for 29 points. Johnson chipped in with eight off the bench as a backup to Jae Crowder, whose holdout this season opened a starting spot for the fourth-year player.

NBA Preview: Houston Rockets (10-35) at Minnesota Timberwolves (23-24)

0

The injury report was long and the recent schedule unforgiving, yet for a team that disappointed over the first half of the schedule, the Minnesota Timberwolves finally displayed some impressive mettle Thursday.

Despite being down a pair of starters in Karl-Anthony Towns (calf) and Rudy Gobert (groin) plus reserve guards Austin Rivers and Jordan McLaughlin, the Timberwolves rallied from a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit and improved to 6-1 at home this month with a 128-126 victory over the Toronto Raptors. Minnesota has won seven of its last 10 contests.

The Timberwolves will host the Houston Rockets on Saturday in the first of back-to-back games between the teams, with the home-and-home series concluding on Monday in Houston.

After blowing a late lead against the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday, the Timberwolves mustered the gumption to overcome Toronto. They did so with a collective effort led by D’Angelo Russell, who scored 16 of his 25 points in the fourth, Anthony Edwards (23 points, seven assists, three steals) and Kyle Anderson, who posted a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double.

While Minnesota shot well throughout, with 50.6/42.5/91.3 shooting splits, it was the late-game defense that saved the day against the Raptors.

That the Timberwolves proved able to limit Toronto to seven points over the final 9:45 without Gobert protecting the rim was a testament to their commitment, starting with the on-ball effort provided by Edwards down the stretch.

Anderson is averaging 15.3 points, 10.7 rebounds, 8.0 assists and 2.3 steals over his last three games for Minnesota.

The Rockets dropped their 12th consecutive game on Wednesday despite two of their second-year building blocks, guard Jalen Green and center Alperen Sengun, playing exceptionally.

Houston suffered a 122-117 defeat to the Charlotte Hornets that extended its home-court skid to 10 games. Green matched his career high of 41 points while grabbing five rebounds and dishing out seven assists. Sengun added 24 points, 12 rebounds and six assists to continue a seven-game tear during which he is averaging 19.1 points, 10.4 rebounds and 5.7 assists.

Unsurprisingly, turnovers offset the production from Green and Sengun. The Rockets are last in the NBA in turnover rate at 16.7 percent, and their 20 turnovers against Charlotte yielded 29 points and fueled the Hornets’ 26 fast-break points.

NBA Preview: Milwaukee Bucks (29-16) at Cleveland Cavaliers (28-19)

0

Following one of their most embarrassing losses of the season, the Cleveland Cavaliers will look to regroup in time for a matchup against the visiting Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday.

Cleveland fell 120-114 at home on Friday to a Golden State Warriors squad that rested star Stephen Curry along with fellow starters Draymond Green, Klay Thompson and Andrew Wiggins.

The Warriors shot 23 of 43 (53.5 percent) from 3-point range and led by as many as 20 in the third quarter.

The Cavaliers played without star guard Donovan Mitchell, who missed his second straight game due to a strained groin. Mitchell could return to face Milwaukee.

Cleveland, which has lost three of its past four, should have reserve guard Ricky Rubio available after the veteran sat out Friday’s contest to rest his surgically repaired left knee.

One bright spot in the loss to Golden State was the play of point guard Darius Garland, who had 31 points and nine assists in 40 minutes.

The Cavaliers have also received a spark this month from third-year pro Isaac Okoro. The 6-foot-5 forward is shooting 57.7 percent (15 of 26) from beyond the arc over his past 10 games.

Cleveland is aiming for a series split against Milwaukee after dropping two of the first three meetings. The Cavaliers won the latest matchup 114-106 on Dec. 21 despite 45 points and 14 rebounds from Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Milwaukee is aiming for its third straight win but could be without Antetokounmpo, who has missed the past four games due to left knee soreness.

With Antetokounmpo sidelined, Milwaukee has leaned on point guard Jrue Holiday, who is averaging 27 points, 8.8 assists and 4.6 rebounds over his past five games while shooting 56.7 percent from the field and 45.9 percent from 3-point range.

Holiday has also helped the Bucks overcome the absence of forward Khris Middleton, who will miss his 18th straight game on Saturday with right knee soreness.

Milwaukee enters Saturday’s contest on one of its best shooting streaks of the season. The Bucks averaged 131 points while shooting 53.1 percent from the field and 49.4 percent from 3-point range in back-to-back wins over the Indiana Pacers and Toronto Raptors earlier this week.

NBA Preview: Charlotte Hornets (12-34) at Atlanta Hawks (24-22)

0

The Atlanta Hawks will put their season-long five-game winning streak on the line Saturday when they host the struggling Charlotte Hornets.

Atlanta beat the New York Knicks 139-124 on Friday night. Charlotte snapped a five-game losing streak by beating Houston on Wednesday, but has lost eight of its last 10.

The Hawks have pulled within a half-game of Miami and New York for the No. 6 spot in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

The two clubs have split the first two meetings, each losing on their home court. The Hawks won the last contest 125-106 on Dec. 16, with Trae Young scoring 31 points. The final game will be Feb. 13 in Charlotte. The Hawks and Hornets split four games last year, and the Hawks have won six of the last 11 in the series.

It was the third time in four games that Dejounte Murray and Young have each scored 20-plus points. Murray scored 29 against the Knicks, going 14-for-25 from the field, and adding 12 assists to record his sixth double-double of the season. Young scored 27 points with six assists.

Over the five-game winning streak, Murray is averaging 26.4 points, seven assists, 6.6 rebounds and 1.8 steals. Onyeka Okongwu has blocked at least one shot in a career-best 12 straight games.

Charlotte’s task will be more difficult if LaMelo Ball is unable to play. He stepped on teammate P.J. Washington’s foot while going for a rebound in Wednesday’s game and exited with a left ankle injury. Ball is also dealing with left wrist soreness and is listed as doubtful for the Atlanta game.

Ball averages 23.5 points, 5.2 rebounds and 8.2 assists. He has made 78 3-pointers since returning from an ankle injury on Dec. 14, the most in the league during that span. This is the third time he has injured the same ankle, which caused him to miss the first 13 games of the regular season. He stepped on a fan’s foot on Nov. 16 and missed 11 games.

Terry Rozier averages 21 points. Washington averages 15.2 points and had three steals, three blocks and two 3-pointers against the Rockets, becoming only the fifth player this season to meet those thresholds in a game.

NBA Preview: Orlando Magic (17-28) at Washington Wizards (19-26)

0

The Orlando Magic look for consecutive wins for the first time in almost a month, playing the second leg of a back-to-back on Saturday when they visit the Washington Wizards.

Orlando topped New Orleans 123-110 on Friday behind 30 points from Franz Wagner and 22 points off the bench for Cole Anthony.

The duo combined to pace a big fourth quarter for the Magic, each knocking down a late-game 3-pointer.

Anthony missed 16 games early in the season, but since coming back on Nov. 30, the Magic are 9-1 when he scores at least 13 points. Wagner’s big game came in spite of sustaining a minor ankle injury earlier in the week.

Orlando has no time for rest heading into Washington, seeking consecutive wins for the first time since beating Houston on Dec. 21 and San Antonio on Dec. 23.

Washington scored a 116-105 victory at New York on Wednesday, just the Wizards’ second win in their last seven outings. Kyle Kuzma and Kristaps Porzingis both recorded double-doubles with 27 points and 13 rebounds, and 22 points with 11 boards.

Wednesday also marked the return of Bradley Beal to the lineup, who missed the previous five straight and eight of the Wizards’ last nine due to a hamstring injury. The one game he played during that stretch, Jan. 3 at Milwaukee, he logged just 13:18 of playing time.

Beal scored 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor against the Knicks, grabbed four rebounds and dished four assists.

Beal has played in 25 of Washington’s 45 games. The Wizards are 11-12 when he has played more than 20 minutes, and just 8-14 when Beal has either been sidelined or limited to fewer than 20 minutes.

Washington also got a boost from Rui Hachimura’s return to the lineup. In 13 games since rejoining the rotation on Dec. 22, the Wizards are 7-6, and Hachimura has averaged 13.5 points per game in those contests despite going scoreless on Wednesday.

Hachimura’s presence gives depth to a Washington frontcourt with Porzingis and Kuzma averaging 22.2 and 21.7 points with 8.8 and 7.6 rebounds per game.

NBA Preview: Boston Celtics (34-12) at Toronto Raptors (20-26)

0

After losing two in a row on the road, the Toronto Raptors know they must improve defensively when they return home Saturday to play the surging Boston Celtics.

The Raptors completed a three-game trip Thursday with a 128-126 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves after leading by as many as 18 points.

Minnesota’s D’Angelo Russell made two free throws with 9.9 seconds to play, and Toronto’s OG Anunoby missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer in the final seconds.

The Raptors still led by 14 with 9:46 left in the game.

Scottie Barnes scored a season-best 29 points and added eight rebounds, five assists and two steals for Toronto.

The Raptors, who won the opener of their trip in overtime against the New York Knicks on Monday, lost to the Milwaukee Bucks 130-122 on Tuesday.

The Celtics won their eighth in a row Thursday when they overcame a nine-point, fourth-quarter deficit to defeat the visiting Golden State Warriors 121-118 in overtime.

The Warriors defeated the Celtics in the NBA Finals last season and on Dec. 10 this season in San Francisco.

The Celtics did not play their best on Thursday and made some turnovers down the stretch before Jaylen Brown tied the score on a 3-pointer with 18.6 seconds left in the fourth quarter, forcing overtime.

Boston shot 39.8 percent (43 for 108) from the field for the game.

Boston’s Al Horford, who had 20 points and 10 rebounds and made some big plays late in the game, said the team showed maturity.

The Celtics defeated the Raptors 116-110 on Dec. 5 at Toronto. Tatum had 31 points for Boston and Pascal Siakam scored 29 for Toronto.

ANAHEIM DUCKS NOTES:

LAST ANAHEIM DUCKS GAME
JAN. 19, 2023 – ANAHEIM 5 @ COLUMBUS 3
The Ducks overcame a 3-0 deficit in the first period to earn a 5-3 comeback win Thursday night over the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena. The win marked Anaheim’s fifth multi-goal comeback victory of the season, now tied for the league lead (also CHI, NJD and VAN). It marks the fourth time in club history the Ducks have rallied from down three goals (or more) to win on the road (second regulation). The only other such road win in regulation came Dec. 2, 2018 @ Washington (trailed 5-1, won 6-5). John Gibson recorded the win in relief, making all 18 saves in 40:00 to earn his 174th career victory, passing Guy Hebert (173) for second on the Ducks all-time list. Cam Fowler (1-1=2), Adam Henrique (1-1=2, +2), Trevor Zegras (1-1=2, +2), Troy Terry (0-2=2) and Isac Lundestrom (0-2=2) each tallied multi-point efforts. Henrique scored for the fourth straight game (4-2=6), his first four-game goal streak since a career best of six games with New Jersey Feb. 27-Mar. 8, 2014 (9-2=11). His assist also marked the 100th of his Ducks career, the 21st player to reach the milestone. Zegras scored the GWG at 5:07 of the third period to cap off the comeback, extending his point streak to a career-tying four games (3-3=6). Fowler netted his fifth goal and 16th assist, his fifth multi-point effort and first since November. Terry matched Zegras with his 11th multi-point effort, sixth multi-assist, extending his assist total to five the last four games (0-5=5) and his team lead in scoring (12-26=38) and assists. Lundestrom recorded his first multi-point outing of the season (0-2=2) in his return to the lineup after missing 21 games due to a broken finger. Simon Benoit scored his second goal of the season and second the last five games, and Max Jones netted his third goal to round out the scoring. Max Comtois, Jaycob Megna and Ryan Strome also earned assists, with Strome pushing his point/assist streak to three games (0-3=3, +2). Anthony Stolarz made 12 saves in the first period.

Former World Champion Guillermo Rigondeaux Comes To Career Crossroads; Now 42 Years Old, Rigo Finds Himself In A “Must Win Big” Situation

Hialeah, FL – Former two-time world boxing champion Guillermo Rigondeaux arrives at the ultimate career crossroads when he returns to action for the first time in a year on Friday, February 24, 2023 at Hialeah Park.

With a professional record of 20-3-1 (13 KOs), the now 42-year-old Rigondeaux faces battle-tested super bantamweight Jesús Martinez, who will bring a mark of 33-17-1 (16 KOs) into the Hialeah Park headliner.

Rigondeaux, who dropped decisions to Vincent Astrolabio in February of 2022 and John Real Casimero in August of 2021, has been sidelined since suffering severe facial burns and eye injuries in a freak kitchen accident at his home in Miami over ten months ago.

“After the way he lost his last two fights and because of his time away from boxing, winning is just not good enough, Rigo must entertain,” said Alberto “Beto” Ferreiro, Sports Journalist and host of Café Deportivos con Beto. “Rigondeaux is obligated to win big and to put on a good show for his fans if he expects another title shot.”

Rigondeaux, the former WBO/WBA Super Bantamweight and WBA Bantamweight world champion will attempt to tap the fountain of youth in his 25th professional fight as he looks to win for the first time since defeating Liborio Solis in February of 2020.

“Rigo must attack and knock Jesús Martinez out,” added Ferreiro. “That’ll be his only option if he wants to continue boxing at a higher level. Anything less than that will likely mean the end of Rigondeaux’s long professional career.”
