NBA Playoff Round 1 Game 3 Preview: Memphis Grizzlies (1-1) at Los Angeles Lakers (1-1)

0

The mystery of whether Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant will play Saturday night might not be resolved until close to tipoff for the second straight game.

Morant’s injured right hand is improving but the Grizzlies again see him as a game-time decision and are listing him as questionable for Game 3 of the Western Conference first-round series against the host Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday.

Morant participated in a non-contact practice on Friday, and that development shows improvement after he was ruled out of Wednesday’s Game 2 less than an hour before tip-off.

The Grizzlies plan to have Morant work out on Saturday before making the call.

Second-seeded Memphis evened the testy series at one game apiece without Morant, prevailing 103-93 at home on Wednesday.

Lakers guard Austin Reaves sees that result and said the Grizzlies have to be respected even if Morant doesn’t play.

Meanwhile, tension between Memphis’ Dillon Brooks and the Lakers’ LeBron James figures to grow thicker after the Grizzlies’ antagonist termed the NBA’s all-time leading scorer as “old” after Game 2.

Brooks is 11 years younger than the 38-year-old James. While he admits James is a legend, Brooks insisted the 19-time All-Star’s level of play has dropped.

James, a four-time league MVP, certainly was irritated by the lack of respect coming from Brooks.

He cut off his media session after five minutes Friday when all the questions were Brooks-related.

James made it clear that how well people play — as opposed to how much they talk — decides the winner of basketball games.

James scored 28 points in Game 2 for the seventh-seeded Lakers and is averaging 24.5 points in the series.

James could use some help from Anthony Davis, who struggled throughout Game 2 while recording 13 points on 4-of-14 shooting.

Davis did block five shots — all in the first half — but he was outplayed in the interior by Memphis’ Xavier Tillman, who scored a career-high 22 points on 10-of-13 shooting while collecting a season-high 13 rebounds.

The breakthrough effort came after Tillman had just two points in 22 minutes in Game 1.

NBA Playoff Round 1 Game 3 Preview: Milwaukee Bucks (1-1) at Miami Heat (1-1)

0

The Milwaukee Bucks are cautiously optimistic that star Giannis Antetokounmpo could be available for Game 3 of their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series against the host Miami Heat on Saturday.

Milwaukee evened the series at one victory apiece with a 138-122 win in Game 2 on Wednesday. Antetokounmpo missed the contest due to a lower back contusion that occurred in the Bucks’ 130-117 loss in Game 1 on Sunday.

The series heads to Miami after the Bucks turned in a dominant performance in Game 2. Brook Lopez scored 25 points, Jrue Holiday added 24, and reserve Pat Connaughton scored a playoff career-high 22 points while shooting 6 of 10 from 3-point range.

Even if Antetokounmpo is forced to miss Game 3, the Bucks have proven they can thrive without their star. Seven Milwaukee players scored in double figures on Wednesday, including Joe Ingles (17), Grayson Allen (16), and Khris Middleton (16).

Miami returns home after securing the desired road split, but coach Erik Spoelstra knows his team needs a better defensive effort after allowing Milwaukee to shoot 25 of 49 (51.0 percent) from 3-point range in Game 2.

Heat guard Duncan Robinson started in place of Tyler Herro, who is likely out for the rest of the series after breaking his right hand in Game 1. Robinson managed eight field-goal attempts and finished with 14 points.

Jimmy Butler has averaged 30.0 points in the first two games for Miami, but the team has struggled to find consistent scoring options with Herro sidelined. Miami also needs to figure out how to slow down Lopez after the 7-footer shot 12 of 17 (70.6 percent) from the field in Game 2.

Miami’s focus on Lopez allowed Milwaukee to find plenty of open shots from the perimeter in Game 2. The Bucks’ 25 3-pointers tied for the most made 3s in a game in NBA playoff history.

NBA Playoff Round 1 Game 3 Preview: Phoenix Suns (2-1) at Los Angeles Clippers (1-2)

0

The Phoenix Suns have drawn a line toward advancing out of the first round and have followed it to a series lead over the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Suns went to the free-throw line 46 times in Game 3, making 35 of the attempts, and secured a hard-fought 129-124 victory over the short-handed Clippers on Thursday. Phoenix grabbed a 2-1 lead in the Western Conference first-round series.

Game 4 will take place Saturday afternoon at Los Angeles, giving the Suns an opportunity to move one game from advancing, with a return to Phoenix ahead for Game 5.

Suns starters Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Torrey Craig combined to go 23 of 24 from the line by themselves. The Clippers went 19 of 25 from the line as a team.

Booker finished with 45 points and Durant had 28 as Phoenix finished off Los Angeles, which was without Kawhi Leonard (knee) for Game 3 and has not had Paul George (knee) all series. George is not expected back in the first round and Leonard will also miss Game 4.

Leonard’s sprained knee happened in Game 1, with the star playing through moderate discomfort in Game 2.

The Clippers trailed by as many as 13 points in the fourth quarter of Game 3 then made a late charge by using a small lineup for most of the final period that included Eric Gordon, Norman Powell, Russell Westbrook, Bones Hyland and Terance Mann.

The energy and long-distance shooting ability got the Clippers back into the game, but they couldn’t complete the comeback after pulling within three points at 119-116 with 1:44 to play.

What they gained in energy and agility, the Clippers lost on the boards as the Suns had a 14-7 rebounding advantage in the fourth quarter, with eight of those Suns rebounds on the offensive end.

Norman Powell had a playoff career-high 42 points for the Clippers, while Westbrook added 30 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds.

MLS Preview: New York Red Bulls (1-2-5) at CF Montréal Impact (1-6-0)

0

The New York Red Bulls picked up a 1-0 win at CF Montreal Impact last August, ending an 11-match winless for them in Quebec in all competitions (D2 L9). New York Red Bulls’ only previous win at CF Montreal was 2-1 victory in its first ever visit there in May 2012.

CF Montreal Impact is the sixth team in the post-shootout era (since 2000) to lose at least six of its first seven matches of a season. Only two teams since 2000, D. C. United (7) in 2010, and Toronto FC (8) in 2012, have lost at least seven of their first eight matches of a season.

The New York Red Bulls have lost only one of their last seven matches (W1 D5) despite falling behind in five of those. new York has come from behind to avoid defeat a league-high four times this season, including coring equalizers in the 89th minute or later in each of its last two matches.

All three of CF Montreal Impact’s goals this season were scored in its lone win, a 3-2 victory over the Philadelphia Union on March 18. CF Montreal is the first team in MLS history to fail to find the back of the net in six of the first seven matches of a season.

The New York Red Bulls held 65.2 percent possession and completed 410 passes in their 1-1 draw with the Houston Dynamo FC on Saturday. Both are the most in an MLS match for the New York Red Bulls since a July 2020 match against FC Cincinnati during the group stage of MLS is Back (67.7% possession, 522 successful passes).

NBA Playoff Round 1 Game 4 Preview: Philadelphia Sixers (3-0) at Brooklyn Nets (0-3)

0

Any attempts the Brooklyn Nets have made to fluster Joel Embiid have proven unsuccessful thus far in their Eastern Conference first-round series — at least in terms of wins and losses.

The Nets may not have to contend with the Philadelphia 76ers’ star center, at least for the next game. On Friday, ESPN reported that Embiid has a right knee sprain and will miss Game 4 on Saturday afternoon at Brooklyn. According to the report, there is optimism he will be ready to return early next week.

Philadelphia is seeking a sweep in a best-of-seven series for the first time since defeating the Milwaukee Bucks in the second round in 1984-85. The 76ers’ last sweep in an opening round of the playoffs occurred in 1991 against the Bucks, although it was a best-of-five set.

Philadelphia opened the series with a 121-101 victory last Saturday and then followed it up with low-scoring wins that required the club to make plays down the stretch. In Game 3 on Thursday, the 76ers struggled most of the second half until getting it done in the final minutes of a 102-97 victory.

Embiid spent most of Game 3 laboring on the floor as the Nets tried to goad him into responding to their aggressive tactics. He finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds but also made a critical block on Spencer Dinwiddie.

The block occurred after Tyrese Maxey finished off a 25-point performance by scoring 10 straight points for Philadelphia and hitting the tiebreaking 3-pointer over Dinwiddie with 44.7 seconds left. Maxey’s clutch shot occurred three days after he scored 33 points in Philadelphia’s 96-84 win and also happened without James Harden on the floor.

Harden scored 21 points but was in the locker room after being ejected in the final seconds of the third quarter for a flagrant two foul on Royce O’Neale.

Brooklyn is trying to avoid getting swept out of the first round for the third time in four seasons and send the series back to Philadelphia for Game 5 on Monday. The Nets also are attempting to halt a nine-game postseason losing streak.

After scoring 35 points in the second half Monday, the Nets took a six-point lead into the fourth quarter by outscoring the Sixers 35-18 in the third. Then they scored 15 points in the final 12 minutes by going 5-of-18 from the floor, missing six of seven 3-point tries and committing four turnovers.

Mikal Bridges led the Nets with 26 points but was 9-of-26 from the floor. He is shooting 36.5 percent (15-of-41) in the past two games.

Dinwiddie added 20 but Nic Claxton was kicked out for picking up a second technical in the fourth quarter and the Nets holding a six-point lead.

* The Islanders won their first-ever playoff game at UBS Arena to cut their series deficit to 2-1, guaranteeing for the second straight year that at least seven of eight series in the First Round will require five or more games (7 in 2022). This is the first time in 30 years that has occurred in back-to-back opening rounds.

Trevor Moore (Thousand Oaks, Calif.,) became the first California-born player to score a postseason overtime goal for a California-based team as the Kings took a 2-1 series lead over the Oilers.

* The Bruins and Wild each earned bounce-back wins in Game 3 – contests that featured Nick and Marcus Foligno both score to combine for a feat not seen in over a decade.

ISLANDERS WIN FIRST GAME AT UBS ARENA TO CUT SERIES DEFICIT

With the contest tied 1-1 late in the third period, Kyle Palmieri scored a go-ahead goal with 3:51 remaining and ignited a four-goal flurry in a span of 2:18 as New York skated to victory in the first-ever postseason game at UBS Arena. The Islanders carried their momentum from Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum and improved to 97-53 at home during the postseason – their .647 all-time home winning percentage trails only the Canadiens (257-134-3; .652 W%) for the highest in Stanley Cup Playoffs history.

* Palmieri’s game winner marked the Islanders’ third-latest go-ahead goal in a playoff game in the past 30 years, trailing only Brock Nelson (56:35; Game 3 of 2020 CF) and Shawn Bates (57:30; Game 4 of 2002 CQF).

HOMETOWN MOORE SCORES OVERTIME WINNER TO LIFT KINGS TO VICTORY
Trevor Moore, the Thousand Oaks, Calif., native who grew up 40 miles outside of Los Angeles, scored the overtime winner 3:24 into the extra frame to complete the Kings’ comeback and skate to a 2-1 series lead overConnor McDavidLeon Draisaitland the Oilers – that duo also found the score sheet Friday while skating in their 40th game, a note that can be found in the most recent #NHLStats: Live Updates. Los Angeles has now earned both of its wins in the 2023 First Round in come-from-behind fashion.

* The Kings opened the scoring with 33 seconds remaining in the opening frame, marking the third time in the 2023 First Round the club has scored in the final minute of a period. Los Angeles has recorded more such goals in a single series just once before (4 in 1982 DSF vs. EDM).

* Moore recorded his first career overtime goal (regular season or playoffs) and became the first California-born player to score a Stanley Cup Playoffs overtime winner for a California-based team. Moore grew up an avid Kings fan – he has fond memories of going to games to watch franchise mainstays like Anze Kopitar and Drew Doughty, teammates of his who were on the ice to celebrate Moore’s overtime goal.

BRUINS, WILD BOUNCE BACK FROM GAME 2 LOSSES TO TAKE 2-1 SERIES LEADS

The Bruins and Wild both took 2-1 series leads after falling in Game 2 – Boston owns an 18-7 record when leading a best-of-seven series after starting at home, while Minnesota is 1-0 when starting on the road.

* Dmitry Orlov (0-2—2) and Brad Marchand (0-1—1) both found the score sheet for the third straight game to open the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Marchand improved his career postseason totals to 51-70—121 (142 GP) and became the fourth player in Bruins playoff history to record 70 assists, joining Ray Bourque (125), David Krejci (83) and Patrice Bergeron (78).

Marcus Foligno scored one of five Minnesota goals while Filip Gustavsson turned aside 23 of 24 shots to help the Wild skate to their second series lead over the Stars. Gustavsson, who also earned the victory in Game 1, became the first goaltender in franchise history to win each of his first two playoff appearances with the club.
