Pirates officially announce signing of No. 10 internationally ranked-prospect Jun-Seok Shim

0

The Pittsburgh Pirates today officially announced the signing of right-handed pitcher Jun-Seok Shim (pronounced Joon-seuk) as a non-drafted free agent.

The 18-year-old Shim was ranked as the No. 2 pitcher (10th overall) by MLB Pipeline among players in this year’s international draft class. The Pirates have now signed two of the top 26 prospects from this year’s international draft class after the team also inked 17-year-old outfielder Raymond Mola from Peravia, Dominican Republic, to a contract on January 17.

“We are excited to add Jun-Seok to our organization and start him on his road to Pittsburgh,” said Pirates Director of International Scouting, Junior Vizcaino. “The ability for the Pirates to add a prospect like Shim speaks to our commitment to seek out and acquire the best talent worldwide.”

Shim joins the Pirates organization after an impressive prep career at Duksoo High School in Seoul, South Korea. Prior to having his 2022 season end prematurely due to an injury to his big toe, Shim posted a 1.42 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 19.0 innings in 2020. One year later, Shim did not allow an earned run in 14.1 innings before being sidelined with an elbow injury.

“As our relationship grew with Jun-Seok and his family, it became very evident on the caliber of person and competitor we are bringing into the organization,” said Pirates Director, Player Personnel Max Kwan. “He is a very confident young man that loves to compete and wants to be challenged. We are impressed with his frame, how well he moves, and his innate ability to spin the ball. We believe he is just scratching the surface. We are excited to support Jun-Seok as he embraces the transition on and off the field entering affiliated baseball.”

The Pirates will host a press conference with Shim, Vizcaino and Kwan today at PNC Park at 11 a.m. General Manager Ben Cherington will also be in attendance. Members of the media can enter PNC Park at the press entrance beginning at 10:15. Pirates scout Jong Hoon Na, who signed Shim, will serve as a translator.

Orioles acquire Cole Irvin and Kyle Virbitsky from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for Darell Hernaiz

0

The Orioles today announced that they have acquired left-handed pitcher COLE IRVIN and minor league right-handed pitcher KYLE VIRBITSKY from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for minor league infielder DARELL HERNAIZ.

Irvin, 28, made 30 starts for the A’s in 2022, pitching to a 9-13 record with a career-best 3.98 ERA (80 ER/181.0 IP). He set career highs in innings pitched and strikeouts (128) and tied his career high with 15 quality starts. The southpaw led Oakland in strikeouts, innings pitched, starts, quality starts, and wins, and ranked second among A’s pitchers in fWAR (1.4). His 14.4 pitches per inning were the second fewest in the American League, while his 1.79 BB/9 ratio ranked sixth best among qualified AL hurlers.

A native of Anaheim, Calif., Irvin was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the fifth round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Oregon. In 81 career Major League games (65 starts), he has gone 21-30 with a 4.40 ERA (198 ER/404.2 IP) and 288 strikeouts against 92 walks. He made his MLB debut on May 12, 2019 at Kansas City (W, 7.0 IP, 5 H, ER, BB, 5 K).

Virbitsky, 24, made 23 appearances (22 starts) between High-A Lansing and Low-A Stockton in his first full professional season in 2022, going 7-7 with a 4.63 ERA (65 ER/126.1 IP). He issued just 30 walks and struck out 140 batters, the most among A’s minor leaguers. Baseball America recently ranked him as having the best control in Oakland’s system. The right-hander was originally selected by the Athletics in the 17th round of the 2021 First-Year Player Draft out of Penn State University.

Hernaiz, 21, played at three levels in the Orioles organization last year, slashing .273/.341/.438 (111-for-406) with 21 doubles, five triples, 12 home runs, 72 runs scored, 62 RBI, and 32 stolen bases in 105 games between Double-A Bowie, High-A Aberdeen, and Low-A Delmarva. He played 58 games at shortstop, 24 at second base, and 21 at third base between the three teams. The infielder was originally selected by the Orioles in the fifth round of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft out of Americas (TX) High School.

Additionally, left-handed pitcher DARWINZON HERNANDEZ has been designated for assignment. The Orioles’ 40-man roster currently has 40 players.

FLAMES LAST GAME RECAP
JANUARY 23, 2023 – CALGARY FLAMES [4] vs. COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS [3]
It was an emotionally charged night at the Scotiabank Saddledome as the Flames welcomed Johnny Gaudreau and the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday. Calgary came out of the gates firing on all cylinders, and despite a solid opening frame from Jackets netminder Jonas Korpisalo, the Flames were able to find the back of the net with Walker Duehr scoring his first home goal in the NHL to give the Flames a 1-0 lead through 20. In the second, Nazem Kadri extended the Flames lead with his team-leading 19th goal of the season. Later in the period, the Jackets would score a pair of quick goals from Kriill Marchenko and Patrik Laine to even the score at two’s. Andrew Mangiapane would respond for Calgary, netting his 10th and restoring the Flames lead through 40. In the third, Columbus captain Boone Jenner would once again tie the game and despite 13 third period shots from the Flames, the game headed to overtime. In the extra frame, Andrew Mangiapane found himself on a two-on-one with Dillon Dube who took the feed from Mangiapane to rifle home his second-straight game-winning goal and the Flames prevailed 4-3 in overtime.
