Orlando Pride Signs Goalkeeper Carly Nelson

Former Kansas City netminder joins the Pride on two-year deal

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Orlando Pride has signed goalkeeper Carly Nelson to a two-year contract through 2024, with an option for an additional year, it was announced today.

“We are excited to add Carly to our group for the coming season,” Orlando Pride Head Coach Seb Hines said of the signing. “She’s a very talented goalkeeper with a few years of professional experience already under her belt, who will add even more competition amongst a very talented goalkeeper group. We’re happy to welcome her here to Orlando and look forward to having her as a member of the Pride.”

Nelson, 24, joins the Pride after spending the last two seasons at FC Nordsjælland of the Danish top-flight. Since heading overseas in 2021, originally on loan from the Kansas City Current, Nelson has appeared 32 times in all competitions, posting nine clean sheets in that span.

The Lindon, Utah native joined the NWSL in 2020, signing with OL Reign, but did not make her NWSL debut until the following year as a member of the Current, posting a shutout in her professional debut on July 23, 2021 in a scoreless draw against the North Carolina Courage in what would serve as her lone match of the season.

A graduate of the University of Utah, Nelson finished her collegiate career with 62 appearances for the Utes, tallying 273 saves and 23 shutouts in the span. As a senior in 2019 she earned All Pac-12 honors, leading the conference in shutouts (10), saves (105) and minutes played (1985).

NBA Preview: Atlanta Hawks (25-25) at Portland Trail Blazers (23-26)

0

A favorable 11-game stretch concludes Monday night for the Portland Trail Blazers, and the club didn’t take advantage of the good fortune.

The Trail Blazers host the Atlanta Hawks to conclude a span in which 10 of 11 games were at home over a 21-day stretch. Portland is just 4-6 during a time when a Jan. 17 game at the Denver Nuggets marks the only occasion it had to leave town.

The Trail Blazers received another break for Saturday’s clash with the Toronto Raptors. Portland was well-rested after not playing since Wednesday and the Raptors were playing the second night of a road back-to-back, having lost 129-117 to the Golden State Warriors on Friday night in San Francisco.

But it was Toronto that looked refreshed while bolting to a 30-7 lead and posting an easy 123-105 victory over the Trail Blazers.

Lillard scored 30 points against Toronto three nights after putting up a season-best 60 in a 134-124 home win over the Utah Jazz.

He made a 3-pointer to pull Portland within 94-90 with 8:41 remaining but the Raptors rattled off 14 straight points to seal it.

Portland was outrebounded 45-27 while playing without Jusuf Nurkic (calf) and Josh Hart (hamstring). Both are listed as day-to-day.

The Hawks have lost three of their past four games as they open a five-game road trip.

Atlanta fell 120-113 to the visiting Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday when it had no answer on how to stop Kawhi Leonard, who made five 3-pointers while scoring 32 points. The Clippers were 19 of 39 from 3-point range.

Star guard Trae Young said Paul George (23 points) joined Leonard in being a big problem for Atlanta.

Young recorded 31 points and 10 assists but didn’t make a 3-pointer for the fourth time in six games. He missed both attempts against the Clippers and is 4 of 25 during the stretch.

Young does have four straight double-doubles and five overall during the span.

Monday’s meeting is the first of two between the teams this season. The clubs split six meetings over the previous three campaigns.

NBA Preview: Toronto Raptors (23-28) at Phoenix Suns (26-25)

0

The recently resurgent Phoenix Suns seek their sixth win in the last seven outings on Monday when they host a Toronto Raptors squad aiming for their fourth win in the last five.

Monday’s contest is the fourth in a seven-game Western Conference road swing for Toronto, which improved to 2-1 on this stretch with a 123-105 rout of Portland on Saturday.

Precious Achiuwa continued his recent strong play with 27 points and 13 rebounds against the Trail Blazers, marking seven straight games scoring at least 11 points and his fourth double-double in five contests.

Achiuwa missed 24 games from Nov. 11 through Dec. 30 due to an ankle injury. He saw a steady uptick in minutes played since rejoining the lineup on Jan. 2 before entering the starting lineup on Jan. 21.

Achiuwa has started three of the past five games and played more than 28 minutes in each of those five contests.

Toronto looks to continue its recent improved play against a Phoenix side that has done an about-face in recent contests.

The Suns endured a stretch of 12 losses in 14 games from Dec. 20 through Jan. 16. The team’s leading scorer — Devin Booker at 27.1 points per game — missed each of those games, save a Christmas Day loss to Denver in which he played fewer than five minutes.

Booker remains sidelined with a groin injury that the 2021-22 All-NBA honoree told reporters last week would be re-evaluated in the coming week. However, Phoenix has effectively adjusted and battled its way back to above .500 with its recent run of performances.

Saturday’s 128-118 overtime win in San Antonio saw Chris Paul lead the way with 31 points and 10 assists, while Mikal Bridges and Deandre Ayton added 25 and 23 points, respectively.

Six different Suns have scored at least 20 points over Phoenix’s past five wins. Josh Okogie came off the bench to score 24 points against Indiana, Torrey Craig notched 20 points in a defeat of Memphis and Cameron Johnson had a team-high 24 in a win over Charlotte.

Phoenix has had to use patchwork lineups at times. In addition to Booker’s absence, key role players Landry Shamet and Cameron Payne have been sidelined for most of the past month or more.

Ayton missed three games last week due to a non-COVID illness, and Paul returned to the rotation from a seven-game absence on Jan. 22.

NBA Preview: Detroit Pistons (13-38) at Dallas Mavericks (26-25)

0

The absence of its two leading scorers would greatly impact any NBA team. It’s especially noticeable when one of those players is named Luka Doncic.

Doncic sustained a left ankle sprain Thursday three minutes into the Dallas Mavericks’ game against Phoenix. The Mavs were able to pull out a four-point win over the Suns but then struggled without him Saturday in a 108-100 loss to Utah.

The Mavericks host the downtrodden Detroit Pistons on Monday with Doncic likely to sit out. They’re also operating without big man Christian Wood, who is recovering from thumb surgery.

Dallas is 0-6 without Doncic in the starting lineup.

Dinwiddie has taken over the role of primary offensive threat with Doncic and Wood sidelined. He’s averaged 35.5 points and 8.5 assists in the last two games.

That wasn’t enough against the Jazz, who led by 18 points at halftime. Dallas outscored Utah 28-18 in the third quarter but couldn’t complete the rally.

The Mavericks managed just 43.8-percent shooting and were outscored 48-28 in the paint. They also couldn’t get to the foul line often, as Dinwiddie attempted 10 of their 17 free throws.

Detroit won the first meeting between the teams on Dec. 1, pulling out a 131-125 overtime victory. Doncic and Wood combined for 60 points but the Pistons had six players in double figures. Bojan Bogdanovic led the way with 30 points and Killian Hayes contributed 22 points and eight assists.

Yet Detroit has now dropped eight of its past 10, including a 117-114 home decision Saturday night to the Western Conference’s worst team, Houston.

Coming off a victory in Brooklyn, the Pistons led by three in the final minute but were outscored 8-2 in the last 35 seconds, partly due to giving up a putback after a missed Rockets free throw.

Detroit led by 10 after the first quarter on Saturday but gave away the lead by halftime, leaving Casey disappointed the Pistons couldn’t build on the win over the Nets.

NBA Preview: Golden State Warriors (25-24) at Oklahoma City Thunder (24-25)

0

More than halfway through the season, the Golden State Warriors are still looking for some traction.

Golden State heads into Monday’s game against the host Oklahoma City Thunder having won consecutive games for the first time in nearly a month.

A victory over the Thunder would put the Warriors two games above .500, matching their high point of the season.

For Golden State to find consistency, Curry figures to play a major role.

Curry is coming off his most complete game since returning in early January from missing 11 games with a partially dislocated left shoulder.

In Friday’s win over Toronto, he had 35 points with 11 assists while attempting just eight 3-pointers. It was the first time since 2019 that Curry had 35 or more points with eight or fewer 3-point attempts.

Facing Curry, Oklahoma City could be without its top defender. Luguentz Dort missed Friday’s win over Cleveland with a hamstring injury.

Monday’s game is the first of four between the teams this season. Golden State has won the last six meetings, sweeping the series each of the previous two seasons.

The Thunder head into the game having won eight of their last 11.

Like much of Oklahoma City’s success this season, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been at the center of the Thunder’s recent hot run. Over those 11 games, Gilgeous-Alexander is averaging 30.9 points with 5.4 assists and 1.8 turnovers.

In Friday’s win, Gilgeous-Alexander was a plus-14 in 35 minutes as he piled up 35 points and eight assists.

Gilgeous-Alexander was 10-of-11 from the free-throw line, the 21st time this season he’s made at least 10 free throws. In his first four seasons, he had just 17 such games.

The Thunder is still trying to work rookie Ousmane Dieng into the rotation. Dieng returned two games ago after missing seven weeks with a wrist injury. He has played about 10 minutes in each of his two games back, scoring five total points.

NBA Preview: Washington Wizards (23-26) at San Antonio Spurs (14-36)

0

The Washington Wizards and the San Antonio Spurs will square off Monday in the Alamo City in a battle of teams heading in opposite directions on the NBA escalator.

The Wizards head to San Antonio after a 113-103 win in New Orleans on Saturday, their fifth consecutive victory. Daniel Gafford led Washington with a season-high 21 points, with Bradley Beal adding 16 points — nine of which came in the fourth quarter.

Beal battled his way to a three-point play and then sank a 3-pointer to garner a 103-94 lead with 2:47 left, and the Wizards held on. They outrebounded the Pelicans 53-42 and grabbed 13 offensive rebounds and converted them into 25 points.

The Wizards played without Kristaps Porzingis, who missed his third consecutive game with a sprained left ankle.

The Spurs hope their homecourt advantage will aid in snapping a five-game losing streak that has dropped them just two games ahead of the Houston Rockets in last place in the Western Conference.

The latest setback – that’s 10 of their past 11 – came Saturday in the form of a 128-118 overtime loss at home against the Phoenix Suns.

San Antonio trailed by 11 points entering the fourth quarter but rallied to force the extra period on Keldon Johnson’s three-point play with 47.8 seconds to left in regulation that tied the game at 110. Phoenix quickly took the lead in overtime and the Spurs ran out of gas.

Johnson poured in 34 points to lead San Antonio and Jeremy Sochan scored a career-high 30, with 14 of those coming in the third quarter. Keita Bates-Diop had 14 points and Doug McDermott scored 10, while Jakob Poeltl grabbed 13 rebounds and Stanley Johnson took 12 boards for the Spurs, who were missing key reserve guards Josh Richardson and Romeo Langford because of injury.

San Antonio has won just twice in their 14 January games.

NBA Preview: Los Angeles Lakers (23-27) at Brooklyn Nets (30-19)

0

The Los Angeles Lakers left Boston frustrated by a loss on Saturday.

The Brooklyn Nets, on the other hand, are holding their own with Kyrie Irving leading the way as Kevin Durant remains out with an MCL sprain.

The two will meet Monday night at Brooklyn, when the Lakers will play without two of their own stars — LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

The Lakers said Sunday that James will be sidelined by left ankle soreness and Davis by a right foot stress injury.

Austin Reaves also is out with a left hamstring strain. Lonnie Walker IV is probable with left knee tendinitis.

The Lakers are 4-6 in their past 10 since winning five straight Dec. 30-Jan. 7. Four of those defeats were by five or fewer points, including Saturday’s 125-121 overtime loss to the Celtics that left the Lakers encouraged by their showing and also peeved.

James scored 41 points, but his fifth game this season with at least 40 points — all coming since Dec. 30 — was marred by what did not happen. With one second left, James missed a potential game-winning layup and was annoyed at official Eric Lewis when a foul was not called on Boston.

James’ annoyance occurred as Irving scored 21 of his 32 points in the fourth quarter of a 122-115 win against the New York Knicks.

Irving scored at least 30 points for a career-high sixth straight game and set the record for the longest streak in team history. Since missing a game in San Antonio Jan. 17 due to a calf injury, Irving is averaging 36.3 points and shooting 51.7 percent (76 of 147), including 47.4 percent from 3-point range (28 of 59).

It was the third time in the past six games that Irving scored at least 20 points in a fourth quarter, and he helped the Nets fend off a comeback attempt by the Knicks. In his past six fourth quarters, Irving is averaging 16 points and shooting 57.6 percent (34 of 59).

Irving’s performance occurred when the Nets hit a season-high 22 3-pointers.

Brooklyn played Saturday’s game without Ben Simmons (sore left knee) and T.J. Warren (left shin contusion). Both could be out again Monday and the Nets could deploy 10 players again after all five starters reached double figures, including Nic Claxton, who has double-doubles in seven of his past eight contests.

NBA Preview: Sacramento Kings (27-21) at Minnesota Timberwolves (27-25)

0

Two teams that have positioned themselves to make rare playoff appearances hope to continue to rise at the other’s expense when the Sacramento Kings visit the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday night in Minneapolis.

It has been 17 years since the Kings last experienced the NBA postseason (2006), while the Timberwolves have reached the playoffs just twice since 2004. But both reside among the winning clubs in the Western Conference as the calendar prepares to turn to February.

Minnesota got the better of Sacramento on Saturday 117-110 in the opener of a three-day, same-site sequence. It was the first of four meetings between the teams this season.

Two players looking to pick up votes from the coaches when All-Star Game reserves are announced Thursday put their impressive forms on display in the series opener.

The Timberwolves’ Anthony Edwards was the game’s leading scorer with 34 points to go with 10 rebounds and six assists. He shot 14-for-21 on a night when the hosts buried 52.5 percent of their shots.

A third-year player who has never been in an NBA All-Star Game, Edwards has raised his scoring to a career-best 24.7 points by averaging 34.2 while shooting at a 54.0 percent clip the past five games.

The Timberwolves have won three in a row and five of the last six. They handled the Memphis Grizzlies and Kings, two of the top teams in the West, to open a six-game homestand during which the reigning NBA champs (Golden State) and current No. 1 team in the West (Denver) also will be visiting.

The Kings, whose current .563 winning percentage is nearly 200 points higher than last year’s .366, have stumbled lately, losing three of four. Saturday’s loss to the Timberwolves was the opener of their longest trip of the season — a seven-game excursion that will take them to San Antonio, Indian, New Orleans and two in Houston. Sacramento had won its previous three road outings before arriving in Minneapolis.

Like Edwards, Domantas Sabonis continued a season worthy of All-Star consideration on Saturday, posting 23 points, 10 rebounds and five assists against the Timberwolves. Sabonis leads the NBA with 37 double-doubles.

The Kings shot reasonably well in defeat (45.1 percent), but that’s not where the game was lost, coach Mike Brown insisted.

After being acquired from the Indiana Pacers last February, Sabonis made his Sacramento debut in a home game against the Timberwolves on Feb. 9. He contributed 22 points and 14 rebounds to a 132-119 win.

NBA Preview: Orlando Magic (19-31) at Philadelphia Sixers (32-16)

0

Joel Embiid repeatedly has said that he believes he was snubbed when he didn’t win the Most Valuable Player award each of the past two seasons when Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets did.

Then just this week, Embiid said he was surprised that he wasn’t named as a starter in the upcoming NBA All-Star Game despite leading the league in scoring.

Embiid used these situations as motivation in a stirring 47-point, 18-rebound performance in a 126-119 win over the Nuggets on Saturday.

He’ll have another chance to build his case for redemption when the Sixers look for their eighth consecutive victory as they host the Orlando Magic on Monday.

Since starting the season 12-12, the Sixers have gone 20-4 to surge into second place in the Eastern Conference.

The Sixers’ success is largely connected to Embiid, who produced his 33rd career game with at least 40 points and 10 rebounds, according to ESPN Stats and Information. Since the 1976-77 season, Embiid has the second-most 40-10 performances, trailing only Shaquille O’Neal with 43.

Embiid also sparked a second-half comeback after the Sixers looked a bit flat and trailed 73-58 at the half.

James Harden also was impressive with 17 points, 13 assists and no turnovers.

The Magic will look to avoid a third straight loss when they battle the Sixers.

Orlando fell 128-109 to the Chicago Bulls on Saturday, though it whittled a 25-point deficit down to six with 5:08 remaining.

Moritz Wagner paced the Magic with 27 points, but the poor start was too much to overcome.

Cole Anthony added 21 points, six rebounds and six assists and provided a spark down the stretch.

But the Magic’s furious comeback landed short.

Orlando’s Markelle Fultz will return to Philadelphia to play the team that made him the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. Fultz struggled with criticism from poor shooting and a shoulder injury with the Sixers.

In 29 games (all starts) this season, Fultz is averaging 12.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 5.6 assists.

NBA Preview: New Orleans Pelicans (26-24) at Milwaukee Bucks (32-17)

0

The Milwaukee Bucks are rolling on offense as they begin a four-game homestand with a game against the struggling New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday night.

The Bucks have averaged 132.7 points during their three-game winning streak. They have five wins in their past six games, and they put up at least 130 points in four of the five victories.

Milwaukee’s most recent victory was a 141-131 triumph against the Indiana Pacers on Friday in Indianapolis.

The Bucks opened a 33-point lead late in the first half before finishing with a season-high first-half total while taking an 85-56 halftime lead.

Milwaukee is seeking a sweep of the two-game season series with the Pelicans after Antetokounmpo had 42 points and 10 rebounds during a 128-119 victory in New Orleans on Dec. 19.

At the time, that was New Orleans’ season-worst fourth consecutive loss. However, the Pelicans are in the midst of an even worse stretch, having dropped seven straight after a 113-103 loss to the visiting Washington Wizards on Saturday night.

The Pelicans will be without All-Star forward Zion Williamson (hamstring) for at least another two weeks. They have lost both games since second-leading scorer Brandon Ingram returned from a 29-game absence caused by an injured toe. Ingram has averaged 17.5 points but made just 12 of 40 shots (30 percent) since returning.

New Orleans has lost 10 of its last 12 games.
