NBA Preview: Dallas Mavericks (28-25) at Golden State Warriors (26-26)

0

The Dallas Mavericks will tip off a five-game trip without Luka Doncic when they visit the Golden State Warriors on Saturday night in San Francisco.

Doncic suffered a bruised right heel in Thursday’s 111-106 home win over the New Orleans Pelicans, having already contributed 31 points to the victory in his 23 minutes.

The Mavericks, who have won two in a row, hope to get their All-Star starter back during their eight-day trip. And if so, he likely will be joined by Christian Wood, who is pointing toward Monday at Utah or Wednesday against the Los Angeles Clippers for his return from a fractured left thumb.

Dallas has yet to win this season in six games without Doncic in the lineup, losing by an average of 12.5 points.

The Mavericks nearly let Thursday’s game slip away as well after Doncic left the game for good with the home team up 84-57 near the midpoint of the third quarter. Dallas was outscored 49-27 the rest of the way.

Josh Green helped save the day for the Mavericks, saving seven of his 15 points for the final period while finishing off a 30-minute night off the bench.

Afterward, Mavericks coach Jason Kidd indicated opponents can expect to see more of Green in the future.

The Mavericks will be playing in San Francisco for the first time since seeing their 2022 season end there in a 120-110 defeat in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals last May. Doncic had 28 points and Spencer Dinwiddie 26 in the defeat.

Dallas got a small measure of revenge in a 116-113 home win over the Warriors in November. Doncic (41 points) and Tim Hardaway Jr. (22) led the way in that one.

The loss was just one of 20 Golden State has suffered on the road in 27 outings this season. The Warriors have been a completely different animal at home, however, going 19-6, including victories over the Memphis Grizzlies and Toronto Raptors in their most recent San Francisco dates.

Golden State went without veterans Draymond Green (calf) and Klay Thompson (illness) on the second night of a back-to-back in Denver on Thursday and suffered a 134-117 defeat. Both players are listed as questionable for Saturday’s game.

The Warriors have lost two straight, including a 119-114 overtime affair Wednesday at Minnesota.

One highlight for the Warriors from the Denver loss was the play of James Wiseman, who hadn’t left the bench in his previous four games since being cleared to play following an 11-game absence due to a sprained left ankle. The young big man had nine points, two rebounds and a steal in 17 minutes against the Nuggets.

The Warriors expect Green and Thompson back for the opener of a two-game homestand that also will see the Oklahoma City Thunder come to town on Monday. Stephen Curry (leg) is probable.

Dinwiddie (knee) is questionable for Dallas.

NBA Preview: Miami Heat (29-24) at Milwaukee Bucks (35-17)

0

The Milwaukee Bucks will shoot for their seventh consecutive win, and first on the season against Miami, when the Heat visit on Saturday.

Milwaukee scored its sixth straight victory Thursday when it held the Los Angeles Clippers to 18 fourth-quarter points and recorded the game’s final seven points — all by Giannis Antetokounmpo — to pull out a 106-105 win. Antetokounmpo scored the Bucks’ final 12 points to give him 54 for the night.

It was the two-time Most Valuable Player’s third 50-plus-point effort of the season and second in five days.

Antetokounmpo has shown that confidence of late. He has scored at least 33 points in five consecutive games, including a 50-point performance Jan. 29 against the New Orleans Pelicans.

He sits third in the NBA in scoring for the season at 32.3 points per game, and leads the league in rebounding at 12.3 a contest following his 19-board outing against the Clippers.

Thursday also was a big day for the Bucks’ Khris Middleton in his return from a lengthy absence due to a knee injury. Middleton logged his most time since rejoining the Milwaukee rotation Jan. 23, coming off the bench to score 16 points and grab seven rebounds in 20 minutes.

Neither the three-time All-Star Middleton nor Antetokounmpo played in Milwaukee’s back-to-back losses at Miami on Jan. 12 and 14. The Heat held the Bucks to two of their 10 lowest-scoring performances of the season while winning 108-102 and 111-95.

Miami comes into Saturday’s third pairing between the squads on the final leg of a four-game road swing. The Heat absorbed their second loss of the trip Thursday when they fell 106-104 at New York.

Bam Adebayo scored 32 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the loss, but Jimmy Butler was held to his second-lowest scoring effort of the season with 10 points on 5-of-13 shooting from the floor.

Prior to opening the current road swing with a 117-112 loss at floundering Charlotte on Sunday, Miami won seven of nine. Butler produced games of 35 and 29 points over that stretch, both Heat wins.

Butler and Adebayo are neck-and-neck leading Miami in scoring at 21.7 and 21.6 points per game, respectively. Adebayo is averaging 22.1 points over the Heat’s last 11 contests.

Points should prove particularly precious Saturday with Miami and Milwaukee boasting top-five scoring defenses. The Bucks are holding opponents to 111.8 points per game, fifth-best in the NBA through games played Thursday. The Heat are giving up the second-lowest yield at 108.1 points a contest.

NBA Preview: Los Angeles Clippers (29-26) at New York Knicks (28-25)

0

The New York Knicks and Los Angeles Clippers each have about a third of the season left to play. But they each got reminders Thursday night how narrow the margins already are in the race for playoff seeding.

The Knicks and Clippers will be looking to get a chance to polish their finishing skills Saturday night, when New York is slated to host Los Angeles in the first game of the season between the teams.

Both teams were off Friday after playing eventful games with nearly identical final scores Thursday night.

The Knicks frittered away most of an 11-point, fourth-quarter lead and nearly blew a five-point edge in the final seconds before escaping with a 106-104 win over the visiting Miami Heat. The Clippers led by 21 points in the third quarter before the host Milwaukee Bucks stormed back behind a dominant fourth quarter by Giannis Antetokounmpo and earned a 106-105 victory.

The reverberations from Thursday night’s chaotic endings could be felt when the playoffs — or the play-in tournament — begin in April.

The Knicks both led by 14 and trailed by three in the third quarter before mounting an 15-9 run to open the fourth and take an 11-point lead with seven minutes left. New York then allowed the Heat to get within a possession six times before taking a seemingly insurmountable 106-101 lead on a dunk by Julius Randle with 5.2 seconds left.

After a timeout by the Heat, Max Strus hit a 3-pointer to pull Miami within two. Bam Adebayo was called for a foul, but Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra successfully challenged and overturned the call, which resulted in a turnover on Randle. Following another timeout, Tyler Herro missed a 3-pointer from the corner.

The win pulled the Knicks within a game of the Heat for the sixth and final guaranteed playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Entering Friday’s play, New York is also four games clear of the 11th-place Indiana Pacers, who fell to the Los Angeles Lakers 112-111 on Thursday.

Despite not playing a conference foe Thursday, the Clippers could still be haunted by their loss down the stretch of the regular season. Los Angeles mounted a 48-23 run spanning almost 12 minutes to take a 76-55 lead with 7:26 remaining in the third and carried an 87-78 lead into the fourth before Antetokounmpo scored 20 points in the final 12 minutes.

Antetokounmpo, who finished with 54 points and 19 rebounds, scored the game’s final points by hitting a pair of free throws with 1:47 left. He ended the evening by missing his final three shots and turning the ball over once, but the Clippers couldn’t take advantage as they went 0-for-4 from the field. Kawhi Leonard missed three shots in the stretch, including an 18-footer just before the buzzer.

The loss, coupled with the Dallas Mavericks’ 111-106 win over the New Orleans Pelicans, dropped the Clippers into a virtual tie for fourth place in the Western Conference with the Mavericks. The fourth- through 13th-place in the West entered Friday separated by just three games.

Knicks guard Jalen Brunson is questionable due to a non-COVID illness. He sat out Thursday’s game.

NBA Preview: Los Angeles Lakers (25-28) at New Orleans Pelicans (26-27)

0

LeBron James is not likely to break Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s NBA career scoring record when he and the Los Angeles Lakers visit the New Orleans Pelicans on Saturday.

But he can help the Lakers finish their five-game road trip with a winning record and tie the fading Pelicans in the tightly bunched Western Conference standings.

James needs 63 points to break Abdul-Jabbar’s record of 38,387 points. His career single-game best is 61 points vs. Charlotte in 2014, when he played for Miami.

James is most likely to break the record next week. The Lakers return home after Saturday’s game to host Oklahoma City on Tuesday and Milwaukee on Thursday.

James moved 26 points closer to the record as he led a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback in a 112-111 victory at Indiana on Thursday. He added seven rebounds and seven assists.

Los Angeles trailed for most of the game and faced a 14-point deficit early in the fourth quarter.

But it was James’ 3-pointer that gave the Lakers their first lead of the game with 2:35 remaining. He added two free throws and Anthony Davis, who finished with 31 points and 14 rebounds, made a winning jumper with 35.1 seconds left.

The Pelicans lost their 10th consecutive game when they finished a 0-3 road trip with a 111-106 loss at Dallas on Thursday. They trailed by as many as 31 points before Mavericks star Luke Doncic left the game for good midway through the third quarter because of a bruised right heel.

New Orleans outscored Dallas 52-30 after Doncic’s departure, but never pulled even.

Pelicans star Brandon Ingram had by far his best game among the four he has played since returning from a 29-game absence due to a bruised toe. He scored a team-high 26 points and made 10 of 21 field-goal attempts.

New Orleans, which hasn’t won since Jan. 13, is beginning a four-game homestand.

The Lakers won their first meeting this season with the Pelicans, taking a 120-117 decision in overtime Nov. 2 at Los Angeles. The teams will meet twice more after Saturday — Feb. 15 at Los Angeles and March 14 at New Orleans.

Tampa’s highly talked about Marques Valle is looking to set the ground running in 2023, as he looks to establish himself as a contender in the super welterweight division.

Valle has been dominant in his 7 professional outings, with all of the wins coming within the scheduled distance. Now the all-action puncher turns his attention to making an impact in the super welterweight division.

Valle opened up on his plans in 2023, “I’m working hard as always in the gym to improve technically and grow into the weight. I started my pro career at 147 but I think I’m going to continue to grow, so it’s the right thing for me to fight at 54.

“I’ve had a great start to my career on ProBox TV, the whole team from Garry Jonas to coaches Marc Farrait and Asa Beard along with my management team at Split-T have worked really well to bring me on the right way, I feel like I have a dream team and that’s really all a fighter can ask for.”

‘The Machine’ competes as a professional alongside his younger brother Dominic Valle, who also holds an undefeated record, and the bigger brother discussed his relationship with his brother and hopes for 2023 for the pair.

He said, “I’m really happy with how me and my brother have progressed, and I love how we always get featured on ProBox TV. Dominic has been guided properly and I think we’re going to be ready for a regional title in 2023.

“There’s a lot of great fighters on television, fighters like Erickson Lubin who are in fights that we are aiming to be in one day, but for now I think we will want to push ourselves into a position where we are ready to break into the world top 15 and go from there.

“I’m from a Puerto Rican family, I grew up watching Felix Trinidad and Miguel Cotto, it was a family party every time there was a big Puerto Rican fight on, and boxing is a family business with me. Hopefully one day we can have these types of parties when my brother and I fight.”
