Boxing Preview: Heather “The Heat” Hardy (23-2-0, 4 KO’s) at Taynna Cardoso (5-1-0, 1 KO)

Former world champion Heather “The Heat” Hardy will battle former Brazilian champion Taynna Cardoso in a eight-round super featherweight bout in the main event at Sony Hall, in the heart of Times Square, mid-town Manhattan, on Thursday, February 23.

In the co-feature, Brooklyn’s Frederic “French Revolution” Julan will clash with South Jersey’s Decarlo “3medno” Perez in an eight-round light heavyweight bout. Elon “El Leon” de Jesus will fight in a six-round super bantamweight contest and three additional fights will soon be added.

The February 23 event is being promoted by Boxing Insider is association with DiBella Entertainment.

“Very grateful to DiBella Entertainment and Boxing Insider for going out of their way to ensure me a slot on this show that will be honoring my late trainer, mentor, and papa, Hector Roca,” said Hardy. “The day before he died, we sat in his hospital room, me on the corner of the bed. He put his hand over mine and said ‘baby, they all think you past your prime, but you didn’t hit it yet. This is going to be your year’. I’m ready and exited to start 2023 off right, here in front of all my NYC fans for papa.”

“This is on paper one of the best local New York cards in years,“ said Boxing Insider’s Larry Goldberg.

Heather Hardy (23-2, 4 KO’s), Brooklyn born and raised and former World Boxing Organization Featherweight Champion, will bring “The Heat” once again after headlining Boxing Insider’s promotional debut on October 13. Heather is a graduate of John Jay College in Brooklyn, began boxing in the gym at age twenty-four and made her professional debut in 2012 at the tender age of twenty-eight. In 2014 she won the vacant WBC International super bantamweight title and in 2016 won the WBC International featherweight title. On October 27, 2018, Heather became world champion, winning the WBO featherweight title with a unanimous decision win over Shelly Vincent at Madison Square Garden. Heather lost the title the following September in a unified title fight to WBC World Champion Amanda Serrano in a clash of women boxing stars. Most recently, Heather won a unanimous decision against Calista Silgado on October 22. Taynnaa Cardoso (5-1, 1KO) from Jundiai, Sao Paulo, Brazil made her pro debut in 2017 and won the Brazilian featherweight title in just her second fight.

Frederic “French Revolution” Julan (12-2, 10 KOs) was born in Paris and now resides in Brooklyn. He made his pro debut in 2016 and won his first ten bouts. Julan is looking to rebound from two tough decision losses, most recently at Madison Square Garden. Decarlo “3medno” Perez (19-7, 6 KOs), from Atlantic City, is a former USA New Jersey State Super Middleweight Champion and a Jersey Shore fan favorite. His last fight was a tough, majority decision loss to Nadim Salloum at Sony Hall in December.

Elon “El Leon” de Jesus (4-1, 3 KOs) from Dunkirk, NY, made his professional debut on December 18, 2020. Elon will fight in a six-round bantamweight bout against Jesus Arturo “Chucho” Guzman (8-10, 5 KOs).

Three-Time World Champion Guillermo Rigondeaux Takes on Jesus Martinez in Main Event

Hialeah, FL – Former three-time world champion Guillermo Rigondeaux, with a professional record of 20-3-1 (13 KOs), will return to the ring for the first time in almost one year when he takes on veteran Jesus Martinez in the 10-round bantamweight main event at Hialeah Park on Friday, February 24, 2023.

Rigondeaux, whose last bout was a unanimous decision defeat at the hands of Vincent Astrolabio on February 26, 2022 in Dubai, has been sidelined since suffering severe facial burns and eye injuries in a freak kitchen accident at his home in Miami nine months ago.

Now 42 years of age, the former WBO/WBA Super Bantamweight and WBA Bantamweight world champion will attempt to tap the fountain of youth in his 25th professional fight as he looks to win for the first time since defeating Liborio Solis in February of 2020.

Martinez of Miami via Colombia, has a record of 33-17-1 with 16 knockouts. Martinez has defeated Jonathan Burgos (9-2-1), Miguel Martinez (20-2), Angel Berrio (14-2). Martinez has also shared the ring with former world champions Luis Nery and TJ Doheny as well as top prospects Gary Antonio Russell, Dominique Crowder and Antonio Vargas. Martinez is on a two-fight winning streak.

In 2021, Nashville SC avoided defeat by winning and drawing their previous MLS matches against New York City FC. Hany Mukhtar scored two of Nashville’s three goals in a 3-1 victory at home, despite the match ending scoreless in New York.

Nashville SC lost five of its final twelve home games last season (W4 D3), including a 2-1 defeat to Houston in its final game. The fourth-longest streak in MLS history, Nashville had been unbeaten in all competitions for 25 consecutive home games (W13 D12).

New York City FC had the longest active scoring streak in Major League Soccer when they scored 55 points during the 2022 regular season. This was the club’s sixth full season with at least 50 points for a row. There are only two teams in league history with longer streaks: the New York Red Bulls and the Los Angeles Galaxy, who played seven straight games from 2010 to 2016 and seven straight games from 2012 to 2018.

In the previous regular season, Hany Mukhtar, the 2022 MLS MVP, scored at least one goal in 22 games (23 goals, 11 assists). Only three players have more goals scored in a single season: Only Tayvon Gray, Maxime Chanot, and Alfredo Morales, three of the 11 starters from New York City FC’s MLS Cup-winning team in 2021, remain on the team following the departures of Season Johnson, Alexander Callens, Maxi Moralez, and Santiago Rodriguez in the offseason. Carlos Vela (age 25 in 2019), Josef Martinez (age 23 in 2018), and Chris Wondolowski (age 23 in 2012).

HOUSTON – The Houston Dash announced today that forward Diana Ordóez has signed a new three-year contract with the team through the 2025 season.

Alex Singer, the general manager of Dash, stated, “Diana is a key piece in our style of play and adds another dimension to our attack.” She is committed to perfecting her craft and possesses all the tools necessary to be one of the world’s best strikers. We are looking forward to collaborating with her and have been impressed by her commitment to the club and desire to improve. The company is delighted that she will stay on.

In a trade with North Carolina earlier this year, Houston obtained Ordóez just before the 2023 NWSL Draft began. In exchange for the Texas native, Houston offered $100,000 in allocation funds, a first-round pick in the 2024 draft, and a spot on the International team in 2023. The contract Houston received from NCC as part of the trade is now obsolete thanks to the new agreement between Ordóez and the Dash.

Having been the No. Ordóez, who was selected sixth overall in the 2022 NWSL Draft, spent her rookie season in North Carolina, making 19 appearances and 17 starts. She set a rookie record for the most goals scored in a rookie season with 11 goals, which placed her fourth in the league.

According to Ordóez, “I’m feeling so blessed and excited to make this commitment to the club and the city.” With some of the best coaches, teammates, and support staff in the league, I can’t wait to build on the great year the team had last year.

Ordóez played club soccer for the FC Dallas Youth Academy while growing up in Prosper, Texas. The forward went on to play Division I soccer at the University of Virginia, where she was named to the All-ACC team three times and to the ACC Championship All-Tournament Team three times. Ordóez won the MAC Hermann Trophy in 2021 and was named an All-American by the United Soccer Coaches in her final year at UVA.

Ordóez, who plays for Mexico on the international stage, made her El Tri debut against Anguilla on April 9, 2022. She was a member of the USYNT but ultimately decided to play for Mexico at the senior level. She made her international debut against Anguilla with a brace after coming on as a substitute in the second half.

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL – The Minnesota Lynx have re-signed guard Rachel Banham, the team announced today in Paul. The terms of the deal were not made public, as is team policy.

Banham, a native of Lakeville, Minnesota, finished her third season with the Lynx, ranking seventh in the WNBA. She was one of three players in 2022 to play in all 36 games (five starts), joining Bridget Carleton and Jessica Shepard. While shooting 43.0% from the field and 38.3% (57-for-149) from three-point range, Banham averaged 7.9 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game. On July 12 against Phoenix, the 5-10 guard scored 25 points (6-of-9 from three) and had seven assists, both of which were season highs.

After a distinguished career at the University of Minnesota, where she finished as the Big Ten’s all-time leading scorer (men or women) with 3,093 points, Banham was selected by Connecticut in the first round (fourth overall) of the WNBA Draft in 2016. Banham, the 2016 Big Ten Player of the Year, made a school record 354 three-pointers in her career and finished second in the nation in scoring as a senior (28.6 points per game), highlighted by a 60-point performance against Northwestern on Feb. 7 that tied an NCAA record. She was a finalist for the John R. Wooden Award and was named to the Associated Press and U.S. Basketball Writers Association’s First Team All-American teams.

In 190 games over seven seasons, Banham averaged 5.2 points, 1.1 rebounds, and 1.5 assists.

In her professional career, Banham participated in 11 games across five trips to the WNBA Playoffs, including the 2019 WNBA Finals. She averages 3.8 points in the postseason in 10.4 minutes per game.

Defender inked to two-year deal with the Pride

Orlando, FL – It was announced today that the Orlando Pride have signed defender Kerry Abello to a new two-year contract. Abello will stay in Orlando through the 2024 season of the National Women’s Soccer League, with an option to extend his stay for an additional year.

“We are delighted that Kerry has agreed to remain in Orlando for the foreseeable future. Haley Carter, VP of Soccer Operations and General Manager of the Orlando Pride, stated, “We saw her grow tremendously in her first season in the league, and she proved herself to be an extremely versatile player for us.” We can’t be happier that Kerry will be here as a Pride member and that she will continue to advance in her career.”

Abello, 23, was chosen as the No. At the 2021 NWSL Draft, the Pride selected 24th overall. The Penn State alum made 24 appearances across all competitions in 2022, including all but one of the Pride’s regular-season games, and recorded an assist for the year.

Abello was called up to the U.S. Women’s U-23 National Team for the Women’s U-23 Three-Nations Tournament one year ago. She scored in that tournament to help the Stars and Stripes defeat Sweden 3-0. She had previously been called up to numerous U.S. youth national teams throughout her career.

Abello had a successful five-year college career at Penn State. The Elmhurst, Ill. native was named to the All-Big Ten team three times, helped the Nittany Lions win three Big Ten titles, and twice was named to the All-North region team during her career.

The Pride play their first game of the 2023 NWSL season on Sunday, March 26 at Providence Park against the Portland Thorns at 5 p.m. ET. On Sunday, April 2, they play host to Angel City FC at Exploria Stadium.

Tonight, February 23, the club will host a free preseason match against the Kansas City Current. For the start at 6:30 p.m., fans can sign up.

FORT MYERS, FL – The Minnesota Twins have signed infielder Donovan Solano to a one-year contract for the 2023 season, the team announced today.

35-year-old Solano batted.284 (79-for-278) in 80 games last season for the Cincinnati Reds. He also had 16 doubles, four home runs, 24 RBI, 22 runs scored, 19 walks, a.339 on-base percentage, and a.724 OPS. He started 26 games as the designated hitter, played 16 games at third base, 7 games at second base, and 26 games at first base.

The winner of the 2020 Louisville Slugger Silver Slugger Award has played for the Miami Marlins, New York Yankees, San Francisco Giants, and Reds for a portion of nine major league seasons. During those seasons, he hit.278 (572-for-2058), had 101 doubles, eight triples, 27 home runs, 206 RBI, 205 runs scored, 129 walks, and had an on-base percentage of.327 in 686 games. The Barranquilla, Colombia native plans to play for Colombia in the 2023 World Baseball Classic after also being on the team in 2017 and currently ranks third all-time among players born in Colombia in terms of hits (572) and games played (686).

The Twins have placed right-handed pitcher Chris Paddack on the 60-day Injured List to make room on the 40-man roster. As he recovers from Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, Paddack is likely to miss the majority of the 2023 season.
