NBA Preview: Denver Nuggets (47-23) at New York Knicks (41-30)

0

With their victory over Detroit on Thursday night, the Denver Nuggets clinched a spot in the playoffs and ended a four-game losing streak.

After the recent losing streak, securing the top seed in the Western Conference, which had previously appeared to be almost certain, is the next task on the list. Denver has 12 games remaining to finish atop the conference for the first time in the NBA franchise’s history, beating the Sacramento Kings by 4 1/2 games.

Saturday’s matinee game against the New York Knicks will be the next step in the quest.

In the second half of their victory over the Pistons, the Nuggets (47-23) appeared to find their defense. After allowing Toronto to score 49 points in the first quarter, Denver held them to 36 points in the second half.

On defense, it has been a struggle; During the losing streak, the Nuggets gave up 123 points per game but held Detroit to 100, becoming the first team to win a division and the second team to get into the playoffs.

Denver’s goal from the beginning of the season was to win the NBA title, which will require a few road victories in the postseason. The Nuggets are 30-6 at Ball Arena and 17-17 away from home. On Nov. 16, New York was one of those six losses.

The Knicks’ (41-30) road record is better than their home record, but they have won five of their last six games at Madison Square Garden. They also have a slight advantage for Saturday’s game because they haven’t played since Tuesday night, when they won at Portland to end a four-game road trip.

Since the beginning of February, New York has been one of the NBA’s hotter teams outside of Milwaukee, going 13-4 to get in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff race. The Cleveland Cavaliers, ranked fourth, are not far behind the fifth-seeded Knicks.

They have gone 11-3 since acquiring Josh Hart from Portland, despite not making a lot of noise at the deadline for trades. Hart is confident in his new team’s ability to win the postseason and has contributed to the resuscitation of New York.

Two of the NBA’s best big men will compete in Saturday’s game. Denver’s Nikola Jokic is averaging a triple-twofold (24.7 focuses, 11.9 bounce back and 10 helps) and is poised to win his third consecutive MVP while Julius Randle leads New York in focuses (25.2) and bounce back (10.3).

Jalen Brunson, the Knicks’ guard, could be out for the fourth consecutive game. Brunson, who leads the team with 23.7 points per game, injured his foot in the loss to Sacramento on March 9 and hasn’t played since.

NFL: 2022 Performance-Based Pay Distributions Announced

0

NFL players will receive $336 million in Performance-Based Pay for their performance during the 2022 season, the NFL announced today. The Performance-Based Pay program is a collectively bargained benefit that compensates all players based upon their playing time and salary levels.

Safety MARCUS EPPS, who played for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2022, earned the top amount among all NFL players for the 2022 League Year Performance-Based Pay program – $880,384 – nearly doubling his 2022 salary. Epps, a 2019 sixth-round round draft choice out of Wyoming, started all 17 games for the Eagles, playing in all but 10 of their defensive plays, as well as nearly 38 percent of the club’s special teams plays. Originally drafted by Minnesota in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Epps was claimed on waivers by the Eagles mid-season of his rookie year. In 62 career games, he has recorded 192 tackles, 15 passes defensed and three interceptions. Earlier this week, Epps signed with the Las Vegas Raiders as an unrestricted free agent.

Players have been paid nearly $2 billion cumulatively since the inception of the Performance-Based Pay program, which was implemented as part of the NFL’s 2002 Collective Bargaining Agreement with the NFL Players Association, and has carried forward in the three subsequent Collective Bargaining Agreements.

HOW PERFORMANCE-BASED PAY WORKS

Under the Performance-Based Pay program, a fund is created and used as a supplemental form of player compensation based on a comparison of playing time to salary. Players become eligible to receive a bonus distribution in any regular season in which they play at least one official down. In general, players with higher playtime percentages and lower salaries benefit most from the pool.

Performance-Based Pay is computed by using a player index (“Index”). To produce the Index, a player’s “PBP Playtime” (defined as the player’s regular season total plays played on offense, defense and special teams, divided by the number of plays of the player with the most total combined plays on that team) is divided by his “PBP Compensation” (defined as regular season full salary, prorated portion of signing bonus, earned incentives). Each player’s Index is then compared to those of the other players on his team to determine the amount of his Performance-Based Pay. If a player’s base salary is less than the Minimum Salary of a player with seven or more Credited Seasons, then player’s base salary will be imputed to be equal to the Minimum Salary of a player with seven or more Credited Seasons (i.e., $1.120M for the 2022 season). By imputing a minimum salary of $1.120 million, a slightly higher percentage of the pool is directed to high-performing veteran players whose salaries exceed $1.120 million, but are not among the highest in the league, as contemplated by the formula. This imputation of salary is solely for the purpose of calculating distributions from the pool and does not affect the actual salary paid to the player under his contract.

ILLUSTRATION OF PERFORMANCE-BASED PAY SYSTEM

Each player on the same team competes for his own share of his club’s Performance-Based Pay pool. The hypothetical example in the table below illustrates how the Player Index works, using a simplified four-player team and a club bonus pool of $1,000,000. Each player receives his share of the pool depending on how his Index compares to those of his teammates.
