MLS Preview: New England Revolution (3-1-0) at D.C. United (1-2-1)

0

The New England Revolution have won seven of their last eight games against D. C. United (L1), but D. C. United won their most recent encounter at Audi Field in April 2022 by a score of 3-2. D. C. United had only lost five of its previous 23 meetings with the New England Revolution in all competitions (W11 D7) prior to this eight-game stretch.

In its first two home games this season, D. C. United has won against Toronto FC and drawn with Columbus Crew SC. Since a five-match stretch between August and September 2021 (W4 D1), D.C. United has not lost three consecutive home games.

The New England Revolution are off to the second-best start in club history, with nine points through four games (W3 L1) The first time in the club’s history that it has shut out opponents in three of its first four games, New England has done so in each of its three victories this season.

Four of D.C. United’s six goals this season—two against New York City FC and one from a corner kick—have come from crosses. This season, only one other MLS team has scored more than two goals from crosses.

In Saturday’s 1-0 New England victory over Nashville SC, Gustavo Bou scored the only goal. Since making his New England debut in the middle of 2019, Bou has scored 41 goals—ten more than any other Revolution player under Bruce Arena—in the regular season and playoffs.

MLS Preview: Atlanta United FC (3-0-1) at Columbus Crew SC (1-2-1)

0

The Columbus Crew SC has won five of its last seven games against Atlanta United FC (D1 L1), whereas Atlanta won five of their first seven matches in all competitions (D1 L1). In all competitions, Atlanta United FC has won more than half of its visits to Columbus Crew SC (W4 D1 L2).

Since the start of the 2017 season, the Columbus Crew SC have only lost one of their 12 home games in February and March (W9 D2), making them difficult to beat at home early on. In February and March, Columbus has won six of its last six games at home, including a 2-0 victory over DC United earlier this season.

With 10 points from four games (W3, D1), Atlanta United FC has the best start in club history. Only four teams in MLS history have scored more after four games than Atlanta, whose 5-1 victory over the Portland Timbers on Saturday brought its total to 11 goals for the season, matching its best score after four games off (11 in 2017).

Jimmy Medranda and Alexandru Matan scored the Columbus Crew’s final two goals from outside the box. The Crew have had eight different players score at least once from outside the box since the start of the 2022 season, which is tied for the most in MLS during that time with the New York Red Bulls, Philadelphia Union, and Toronto FC.

In Atlanta United FC’s last two games, Caleb Wiley has scored three goals and provided two assists. After T. Almiron, E. Barco, and M. Almiron, Wiley is the fourth player for Atlanta United FC to score and assist in two consecutive games. No Atlanta player has done this in three consecutive games.

TONIGHTS STORYLINES & STATS
This is the fourth and final matchup this season between the Flames and Golden Knights. The Flames have claimed five of a possible six points against the Knights so far this season. This is a Pacific Division matchup; The Flames have an overall record of 11-5-3 against Pacific Division opponents this season and a record of 20-13-7 against Western Conference opponents.

FLAMES VERSUS THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS THIS SEASON:
The Calgary Flames and Vegas Golden Knights get set to square off for the fourth and final time this season, with the Flames holding a 2-0-1 record against their Pacific Division opponent. Their first meeting came in October with the Flames erasing an early two-goal deficit to come back and win 3-2 with goals from Elias Lindholm, Tyler Toffoli, and Blake Coleman. In their second meeting, the Flames got goals from Jakob Pelletier, Jonathan Huberdeau and Mikael Backlund. Vegas would be the team to comeback in this game however, as they rallied late with Alex Pietrangelo scoring the overtime winner. In their most recent meeting a week ago, the Flames exercised their T-Mobile Arena demons and won their first game on the road in Vegas with a 7-2 triumph. Mikael Backlund scored for the third-straight game against the Golden Knights, while Blake Coleman and Tyler Toffoli had multi-goal games with Toffoli recording four points on the night. Dillon Dube and MacKenzie Weegar also found the back of the net for the Flames.

QUICK HITS:
Tyler Toffoli recorded three assists on Tuesday in Anaheim for just the second time in his career (Oct. 26, 2014 vs. CBJ) and has now recorded points in four straight games. Andrew Mangiapane scored a slick breakaway finish for his 14th of the season. Every skater on the Flames recorded at least one shot on goal, with all five goals coming from five different skaters. All but three skaters on the Flames were a +1 on Tuesday and Mikael Backlund recorded his 301st and 302nd NHL assists.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
• Tonight’s matchup is second of three games the Kraken will play against the Predators this season and the first time the two teams are playing in Nashville this year.

• Tonight’s game is also the first of two consecutive games the Kraken will play against the Predators in Nashville. It marks the third time in franchise history that the Kraken are facing the same team in back-to-back games in the same location. They played the Kings in two-straight games in Los Angeles last season on March 26 and 28, 2022 and played the Stars in back-to-back games in Seattle on March 11 and 13.

• Tonight’s game is the second of a four-game road trip in which all four games will be played against Central Division teams. It is the 18th of 25 games the Kraken will play against Central Division teams this season, with Seattle holding an 9-3-5 record against the Central Division this year.

• A win tonight would give the Kraken four consecutive victories against the Predators. Seattle holds a 3-1-0 all-time record against Nashville.

• Vince Dunn, who has already set a career high with 57 points (13 goals, 44 assists) this season, enters tonight’s game as the Kraken’s leading scorer. He was ranked in the top 15 among all NHL defensemen in goals (tied eighth), assists (11th), points (11th), even-strength goals (13, tied second) and even-strength points (42, third) entering play Wednesday. Since Jan. 1, Dunn is leading all NHL defensemen in scoring with 38 points (nine goals, 29 assists) in 36 games played.

• Entering play Wednesday, Jared McCann (1.90) was leading the NHL in goals-per-60 at five-on-five this season among players that have played in at least 12 games this year.

• With the Kraken’s four-goal outing in their game on March 3 against Columbus, they surpassed their goal total from all of last season in 20 fewer games. Seattle has scored 245 goals in 70 games this season compared to 213 goals in 2021-22. The team’s 245 goals this season were tied for the sixth-most in the NHL entering play Wednesday.

• Jordan Eberle’s goal in the Kraken’s game on March 3 at Columbus was his 50th point of the season. It is the sixth time in his career and first time since 2017-18 that Eberle has recorded 50 or more points in a season.
