NBA Preview: Milwaukee Bucks (53-21) at Detroit Pistons (16-58)

0

On Saturday, the leaders of the conference battled and the Milwaukee Bucks lost. Against a struggling team that they have dominated in recent years, they will attempt to rebound.

The Bucks play Detroit in the third game of a four-game road trip after losing to Denver 129-106. Milwaukee (53-21) has won 16 of the last 17 meetings with its Central Division rival, and if they win, they can win the season series.

Detroit (16-58) has lost 16 of its last 17 games and its last five games.

Although the Bucks defeated Utah by 28 points on Friday night, they were unable to maintain that level of energy and output in the Mile High City. After taking a 66-63 halftime lead, the Bucks were outscored 34-19 and 32-21 in the third and fourth quarters, respectively.

Denver made 15 3-pointers and shot 52.8% from the field. Milwaukee was held to 44.3 percent shooting and associated on only 25% of its 3-point endeavors.

Nikola Jokic scored 31 points, had 11 assists, and pulled down six rebounds for the Nuggets in the competition for the Most Valuable Player award. Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Bucks also had 31 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and four steals.

Over the course of the past month, the Pistons have played with lineups that are down, and the results have been predictable. In their last five games, they’ve lost by at least nine points.

The Raptors defeated them 118-97 in their last game on Friday. Toronto led 72-52 at halftime after scoring 38 points in the first quarter.

Jaden Ivey, a rookie guard, scored 20 points and had eight assists for the Pistons, but he also turned the ball over nine times, resulting in 23 Raptors points.

On Wednesday, the Bucks finish their road trip against Indiana. On Wednesday, the Pistons play Oklahoma City in the first of three road games.

NBA Preview: Minnesota Timberwolves (37-37) at Golden State Warriors (39-36)

0

The Minnesota Timberwolves and Golden State Warriors will each endeavor to limit any association with the NBA’s play-in competition when the Western Meeting season finisher hopefuls duel Sunday night in San Francisco.

When the teams meet for the fourth and final time this season, playoff position, the outcome of the season series, and postseason tiebreakers all come into play. Golden State has won two of the first three meetings.

Golden State is sixth in the West and Minnesota is seventh, so the Warriors (39-36) and Timberwolves (37-37) started the weekend on opposite sides of the play-in line.

A Warriors win Sunday would go far toward guaranteeing they will complete in front of the Timberwolves in the last standings. With just six games remaining, it would not only create a gap of 2 1/2 games but also give Golden State the season-series tiebreaker.

On the other hand, with both teams starting play on Sunday at 25-20, a Timberwolves victory would reduce their deficit to half a game, even the series, and give Minnesota a leg up on the second playoff tiebreaker, conference record.

The Timberwolves have won two consecutive games, and perhaps no other game this season has been as crucial as Wednesday’s 125-124 home thriller against the Atlanta Hawks.

The Timberwolves not only avoided their 38th defeat, which would have dropped them at least two spots in the Western standings, but they also welcomed back Karl-Anthony Towns after he missed 51 games with a strained right calf.

In 26 minutes, Towns scored 22 points, saving his best two for a pair of decisive foul shots with 3.6 seconds remaining.

Chris Finch, the Timberwolves’ coach, has said that Towns will have to play fewer minutes in upcoming games. This means that it’s possible that he won’t play both ends of a back-to-back that ends on Monday in Sacramento.

There is no indication of which game Towns might miss, but due to their proximity in the standings, the Timberwolves’ matchup with Golden State is significantly more significant.

Due to a sprained right ankle, Minnesota was without Anthony Edwards for the third game in a row on Wednesday. He was given permission to return to practice on Friday, but he was ill and missed that session, making him also questionable for the Golden State matchup.

In contrast, the Warriors are still without Andrew Wiggins for personal reasons, but Gary Payton II, who was acquired from Portland in February, may make his Warriors debut. Payton was suffering from an adductor injury, but he is likely to play against Minnesota.

Payton said he was ready to play for the first time since a Trail Blazers-Warriors game on Feb. 8 during a Warriors workout on Saturday.

Steve Kerr, the Warriors’ coach, said that he is very excited about the addition.

With three wins in a row over the course of five days, including Friday’s 120-112 home victory over the Philadelphia 76ers, the Warriors have moved into first place in the Western Conference standings.

NBA Preview: Washington Wizards (33-41) at Toronto Raptors (36-38)

0

When the Washington Wizards visit the Toronto Raptors on Sunday, the season series will be at stake.

On March 2-4, the teams split two games in Washington.

In each of the previous four seasons, the Raptors (36-38) have defeated the Wizards (33-41) to win the series.

Both teams have won at home recently. With a 118-97 victory on Friday, the Toronto Raptors completed their four-game season sweep of the Detroit Pistons.

Corey Kispert led the Washington Wizards to a 136-124 victory over the San Antonio Spurs with a career-high 26 points.

The Wizards will try to keep their slim hopes of getting into the play-in game alive.

They are two and a half games behind the Chicago Bulls, who are in 10th place and hold the final Eastern Conference play-in spot. Toronto, in ninth place, is three games behind Washington. In the standings, a tie is decided by the teams’ season series.

Bradley Beal (knee) and Kyle Kuzma (ankle) were both out of the Wizards’ game on Friday, making it the team’s second game in a row without them. In total, Kuzma has missed three.

Kispert responded with six 3-pointers, five rebounds, two assists, and one blocked shot on 9-of-14 shooting.

Delon Wright, the backup point guard, scored 24 points, seven rebounds, and three assists, which was a season high. Kristaps Porzingis had nine rebounds and 23 points.

Unseld praised Kispert and Deni Avdija’s aggressive play in the past two games despite the injuries to two key players. On Friday, Avdija had 21 points and 11 rebounds.

For the second consecutive game on Friday, the Raptors were without Scottie Barnes (wrist), Gary Trent Jr. (elbow), and Precious Achiuwa (hamstring). For the game on Sunday, all three are questionable.

Chris Boucher scored 19 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, and blocked two shots off the bench, and Pascal Siakam had 32 points to lead the scoring.

Will Barton started for Toronto for the second game in a row despite the injuries and scored nine points.

Malachi Flynn and Jeff Dowtin Jr. are also options. Flynn scored five points and Dowtin scored nine on Friday.

NBA Preview: Houston Rockets (18-56) at Cleveland Cavaliers (47-28)

0

The Cleveland Cavaliers’ late-season focus is on aligning their key components for what they hope will be a prolonged postseason run, so the playoffs are merely a formality at this point.

The Cavaliers (47-28) showed what makes them so potent in their road win over the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday, which they won by a score of 116-114. Donovan Mitchell, who was acquired in the offseason and changed the direction the team was heading, scored a team-high 31 points to keep his explosive season going.

Caris LeVert and Isaac Okoro collaborated on the game-winning three-pointer after Mitchell missed a last-second free throw that would have tied the score. Cleveland, which plays the Houston Rockets on Sunday and has won nine of their last 12 games, put in a team effort.

Evan Mobley’s performance, a second-year forward who had 26 points, 16 rebounds, three assists, four blocks, and a steal, was crucial to the victory. The ascendant Cavaliers continue to feel his influence on both sides of the court.

On Friday, the Rockets (18-56) were once more undermined by uneven play. The Rockets were blown out of the court in the rematch, falling 151-114 to equal their largest margin of defeat of the season after losing to the Memphis Grizzlies by five points on Wednesday. On February 15, Houston also had to deal with a 37-point road loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Memphis shot just 61.3 percent from the field and made a franchise-record 25 3-pointers thanks to the Rockets’ lack of defense. Underscoring Memphis’ impressive shooting performance was reserve Luke Kennard of the Grizzlies, who made ten 3-pointers to set an individual franchise record.

The Rockets’ fourth defeat in a row did not reflect their performance of late. Houston dominated five of eight matches before this most recent pallet and was regularly serious in each challenge. However, the Rockets’ lack of fight against the Grizzlies was unexpected at this late stage of the season.

NBA Preview: Chicago Bulls (35-38) at Los Angeles Lakers (37-37)

0

By defeating Oklahoma City on Friday, the Los Angeles Lakers reached the.500 mark for the first time in 14 months.

If they beat the visiting Chicago Bulls on Sunday, they would improve their position in the race for the Western Conference playoffs and boost morale during a crucial time when star player LeBron James was injured.

With eight games remaining in the regular season, Los Angeles (37-37) was the eighth seed in the West going into Saturday. The team’s optimism is growing.

Even though Chicago (35-38) hasn’t been above.500 since Nov. 2, when they were 5-4, the Bulls are now in a good position to participate in the Eastern Conference play-in tournament.

Friday, Chicago won 124-96 over Portland to kick off a three-game road trip and claim its sixth victory in eight games. The Bulls held a 2 1/2-game lead over the final play-in spot and were in control of 10th place in the East going into Saturday.

On Friday, Nikola Vucevic had a double-double of 23 points and 15 rebounds, while Zach LaVine led the Bulls with 33 points and eight assists. DeMar DeRozan, Chicago’s leading scorer, was out with a strained right quadriceps, but the Bulls had plenty of other options against a Portland team that was without four starters because of injuries.

Set for the finale of a five-game homestand, the Lakers have won three straight, with the beyond two coming against individual Western Meeting season finisher competitors.

Anthony Davis scored 37 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in Friday’s victory over the Thunder, two days after beating the Phoenix Suns. Lonnie Walker IV had 20 points and Schroder scored 13 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter.

Walker, who had been healthy for three games prior to Friday, welcomed the opportunity to play more minutes as the Lakers dealt with injuries to James (foot) and D’Angelo Russell (hip). Since James left, Los Angeles has gone 8-5.

The Bulls and Lakers will meet again on Wednesday in Chicago to conclude their season series. Last season, the Bulls defeated the Lakers in both games, ending the Lakers’ three-game winning streak in the series.

Last season, DeRozan scored 38.0 points per game on the Lakers. Vucevic has posted a twofold in four of the beyond five gatherings.

NBA Preview: Dallas Mavericks (36-38) at Charlotte Hornets (24-51)

0

The Dallas Mavericks need to sort what is happening out as soon as possible, and the second an open door in three days against the Charlotte Hornets comes Sunday evening at Charlotte, N.C.

The Mavericks (36-38) are returning off to-back home misfortunes, including a significant botched open door Friday against the modest Hornets.

Despite playing without guards Terry Rozier (foot) and Kelly Oubre Jr. (shoulder strain), Charlotte (24-51) prevailed 117-109 against Dallas on Friday night.

However, the Hornets’ outcome was not unexpected.

At halftime, the Mavericks trailed the Hornets by 69-55, demonstrating their lack of urgency. In the first half, Dallas shot just 18.8% from three-point range on three of 16 attempts.

At the start of NBA play on Saturday, the Mavericks were in 11th place in the Western Conference, leaving them out of the play-in tournament.

Home fans booed the Mavericks on Friday and Kidd didn’t protest the disappointment.

Kyrie Irving, a guard for Dallas who had a sore foot earlier in the week, scored 18 points on Friday. Before being traded to the Mavericks, Irving played for the Brooklyn Nets and scored 28 and 33 points in games against Charlotte earlier this season.

The Hornets got a joined 53 focuses from P.J. Washington and Gordon Hayward on Friday. While the team used a improvised roster, they helped set the tone.

With 13 points and nine assists, Hornets guard Dennis Smith Jr. made significant contributions against his former team.

With 8:30 remaining, the Hornets extended their lead to 97-96, but a Smith 3-pointer with 5:56 remaining capped a 10-0 run that saw them win.

With yet another Sunday, it was just another chance for the Hornets to evaluate their player development.

NWSL Preview: Angel City FC (0-0-0) vs NJ/NY Gotham FC (0-0-0)

BMO Stadium | Los Angeles, California – Sunday, March 26 at 9:00 PM ET

Players to watch:

As it begins its 2023 campaign, Angel City has a plethora of attacking options to choose from, including Sydney Leroux and Simone Charley, the return of Christen Press from injury, and the selection of 18-year-old Alyssa Thompson as the No. 1 player. 1st overall pick in the NWSL Draft for 2023. The team will be pleased to welcome back defender Sarah Gorden, who tore her ACL in preseason and missed the entire season last year, as well as goalkeeper DiDi Haracic, who contributed in significant ways multiple times last season. In the team’s 3-0 preseason win, Gorden put on a dominant performance, and he will try to lead this Angel City team from defense to offense this year.

NJ/NY Gotham FC are already exciting because of the plethora of new players brought in during the offseason. Kelley O’Hara, a veteran defender who joined the team after playing for the Washington Spirit for several years, and the addition of attackers Yazmeen Ryan (Portland) and Lynn Williams (Kansas City) already provide Gotham with more firepower this season. Club commander Ali Krieger will lead the back line alongside O’Hara, and the marking of promising Brazilian fullback Bruninha gives fans one more name to look as the season becomes older.

Match Facts: The regular season opener between Angel City FC and Gotham FC is set for Sunday at BMO Stadium. The two teams split the 2023 series, with Gotham winning 1-0 in May and Angel City winning 3-1 in August.

With 12 goals scored and 12 conceded, Angel City was the only team to finish the season with equal home goals scored and conceded. Even though the team’s five home victories were one shy of being tied for the most in the league, their 12 home goals were the third fewest of any NWSL team (Gotham–8, Louisville–11). Another highlight of the club’s first NWSL season was the play of attacker Jun Endo. Endo had 41 chances in 2022, 25 of which came at home, which was the third most in the league. Endo gave a teammate at least one chance in each of Angel City’s 11 home games last season.

Gotham FC, who came to the game on Sunday, finished 2022 with a 13-game winless streak (D1 L12), which was tied for the fifth-longest winless streak in NWSL history. However, they have everything in place to have a much more competitive season this year. The team conceded at least one goal in each of their last 17 games, the most in the NWSL since Sky Blue did so from May 2018 to September 19, when they conceded 41 goals in 17 games. Stars like Ryan, Williams, and even midfielders like Kristie Mewis should be able to move more freely now that the defense has improved.
