NHL Morning Skate – March 28, 2023

0

* The idle Maple Leafs and Rangers both clinched berths into the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs, leaving just 11 spots remaining.

Leon Draisaitl became the fourth-fastest active skater to score 300 goals while Connor McDavid became the first player in more than 25 years to post a 140-point campaign.

* Twenty-one-year-old Matt Boldy scored his third career hat trick – and second this month – to help the Wild maintain their lead atop the Central Division in a contest that could be a 2023 First Round preview.

* The Bruins can clinch the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference and the Presidents’ Trophy during Tuesday’s action, while the Golden Knights will be in a position to secure their spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

MAPLE LEAFS, RANGERS CLINCH BERTHS IN 2023 STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS
The idle Maple Leafs and Rangers both clinched berths into the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs – for Toronto it was by virtue of a Panthers’ loss, while for New York it was due to Florida’s defeat in regulation paired with Buffalo’s loss of any kind. A total of five of eight Eastern Conference postseason spots have now been accounted for.

Click here for more #NHLStats about the Maple Leafs, who are headed to the postseason for a seventh straight year and 72nd time in franchise history. Their seven straight consecutive postseason berths mark their second-longest run of the NHL’s expansion era (since 1967-68) and fourth longest in franchise history.

Click here for more #NHLStats about the Rangers, who are headed to the postseason for a second straight year and 62nd time in franchise history. They have reached at least the Conference Finals four times in the past 11 postseasons, defeating the Canadiens (2014) and losing to the Lightning (2015 & 2022) and Devils (2012). New York’s four Conference Finals appearances since 2012 are the second most among all teams over that span behind Tampa Bay (6).

DRAISAITL SCORES 300TH CAREER GOAL, MCDAVID HITS 140 POINTS

With three Oilers skaters entering Monday at 299 career goals, Leon Draisaitl (1-0—1) outraced teammates Connor McDavid (0-1—1) and Evander Kane to No. 300 while McDavid collected his 80th assist and 140th point of the season to help Edmonton (42-23-9, 93 points) move within three points of Los Angeles (43-20-10, 96 points) for second place in the Pacific Division.

* McDavid (60-80—140 in 74 GP) became the 10th different player in NHL history to record 140 points in a season and first since 1995-96 when Mario Lemieux (69-92—161) and Jaromir Jagr (62-87—149) achieved the feat with the Penguins. The Oilers captain became the seventh different skater to post 60 goals and 80 assists in a campaign, with Lemieux and Jagr also being the last to do so.

BOLDY NETS NATURAL HAT TRICK

Matt Boldy (3-0—3) led the Wild with his third career three-goal game – and first natural hat trick – to help the Wild (43-22-9, 95 points) maintain their lead ahead of the Avalanche (44-23-6, 94 points) atop the Central Division. Boldy has now totaled 12 goals in March and became the third Minnesota player with as many in a calendar month, joining Kirill Kaprizov (14 in March 2022) and Eric Staal (13 in Feb. 2018).

* Boldy joinedKaprizov (Feb. 26, 2023) as the second Wild player this season to record a natural hat trick, marking the first time in franchise history that two skaters have achieved the feat in the same campaign.

* Boldy (21 years, 356 days) scored his second hat trick this month and the third of his career – only Marian Gaborik (5) recorded more with the Wild at age 21 or younger.

MACKINNON SKATES IN 700TH GAME ON #NHLSTATS: LIVE UPDATES

The most recent #NHLStats: Live Updates featured notes from each of the 12 teams who played Monday, including Nathan MacKinnon (1-1—2) who recorded his 60th and 61st points since Jan. 1 – the only player with more over that span is Connor McDavid (28-40—68).

BRUINS CAN SECURE FOURTH PRESIDENTS’ TROPHY AS PURSUIT OF RECORD CONTINUES

With an already lengthy list of achievements this season – including becoming the fastest team in NHL history to 100 points (61 GP) and 50 wins (64 GP) – the Bruins (57-11-5, 119 points) can secure the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference and the Presidents’ Trophy during a 10-game Tuesday. Boston would lock it up with both a win over Nashville and a Carolina loss in regulation.

* The Bruins have finished as the No. 1 seed in their conference seven times since they were introduced in 1974-75: four times in the Eastern Conference (2001-02, 2008-09, 2013-14 & 2019-20) and three in the Prince of Wales Conference (1982-83, 1989-90 & 1990-91).

* The Bruins have finished as the No. 1-ranked team in the NHL standings 14 times since joining the League in 1924-25 and have claimed the Presidents’ Trophy (introduced in 1985-86) three times so far. Boston is one of five clubs to win the trophy at least three times, behind Detroit (6) and alongside Colorado (3), NY Rangers (3) and Washington (3).

* Playing in their 74th game of the season Tuesday, the Bruins can tie the third-fewest outings to clinch the NHL’s No. 1 seed in an 82-game season. Boston claimed its most recent Presidents’ Trophy in 2019-20 when it led the NHL in points and points percentage at the pause. The Bruins’ other first-place finishes in the past 37 years came after 78 and 81 games in 1989-90 and 2013-14, respectively.

* The 2001-02 Red Wings are the only team to clinch the Presidents’ Trophy in 75 games or fewer and go on to win the Stanley Cup. Overall, only eight clubs have won both in the same season.

NATIONAL TELECAST PITS OILERS VS. GOLDEN KNIGHTS FOR SECOND TIME IN FOUR DAYS
After a back-and-forth showdown Saturday in Edmonton – when the Oilers scored three tying goals before an eventual Golden Knights overtime win on Hockey Night in Canada – the two clubs will meet again for a national broadcast in both the United States (ESPN+, Hulu) and Canada (TVAS, SN1).

* The Golden Knights (46-21-6, 98 points) have the opportunity to become both the first team in the Western Conference to clinch a playoff spot and to reach the 100-point mark. It would be the second time Vegas hits 100 points in a season and would match their benchmark of fewest games first achieved in their inaugural season (74 GP in 2017-18).

* Vegas has sat atop the Western Conference for 119 days this season – the most by any team in the West, ahead of Dallas (44 days). Across the League, only Boston (159 days; Eastern Conference) has held the No. 1 spot in a conference longer. Vegas has spent more time atop the Western Conference standings since entering the NHL in 2017-18 than any other team in that span (23% of that time, ahead of STL at 17%).

NBA Preview: New Orleans Pelicans (38-37) at Golden State Warriors (39-37)

0

NBA stars Zion Williamson and Stephen Curry will go a full standard season without going head to head straight on when the New Orleans Pelicans and Golden State Warriors total their four-game season series on Tuesday in San Francisco.

When the Pelicans (38-37) defeated the host Portland Trail Blazers 124-90 on Monday in the first half of a back-to-back set, they did so without Williamson, who had been out for 38 games with a strained right hamstring.

The victory brought the Pelicans within half a game of the Warriors (39-37) and the Minnesota Timberwolves (39-37) in the race for the West’s final guaranteed playoff spot. Brandon Ingram scored 29 points before retiring after just 31 minutes. By virtue of the tiebreaker based on the conference record, Minnesota currently holds the crucial sixth position.

Monday was a day off for the Warriors to recover from a costly 99-96 home loss to the Timberwolves.

When the Pelicans swept a pair of Golden State games at home in November, Williamson, who could miss the rest of the regular season, was not a big factor. He only scored 25 points and grabbed five rebounds. Golden State was tired of traveling. Curry, Draymond Green, Klay Thompson, and Andrew Wiggins were not with the Warriors in either of those games, which they lost by 54 points.

Green and Thompson were back for the Warriors’ March 3 home victory over the Pelicans, 108-99, but Curry and Wiggins were still missing. Thompson scored 27 points to lead the way.

Curry has since returned, but he hasn’t been at his best in Golden State’s last three games, going 2-for-8, 2-for-7, and 4-for-13 on 3-point attempts.

The Warriors won two of the three, remembering beating the Philadelphia 76ers for Wednesday to open a three-game homestand. Before losing to the Timberwolves on Sunday, they had won nine of their previous ten games at home.

The uplifting news for the Warriors in the misfortune was the Golden State season presentation of Gary Payton II, who was obtained from the Portland Pioneers in February while he was managing a stressed adductor. In Minnesota, he scored nine points in 15 minutes.

Guard Jose Alvarado (stress reaction in right tibia) remains out for the Pelicans, who continue to play a tough schedule that includes games against the Denver Nuggets, Los Angeles Clippers, Sacramento Kings, Memphis Grizzlies, and New York Knicks following the Warriors game.

They will then play the Timberwolves on Tuesday night to end the season, a team with whom they could tie in the standings.

Five Pelicans scored in double figures on Monday, and New Orleans has won five straight heading into the season-ending contest. Jonas Valanciunas had a season-high 10 points and 21 rebounds.

NBA Preview: Charlotte Hornets (25-51) at Oklahoma City Thunder (37-38)

0

The Oklahoma City Thunder face a crucial two-game homestand in their quest for a playoff spot in the crowded Western Conference race after splitting a four-game West Coast road trip.

Beginning with the Charlotte Hornets’ visit on Tuesday, the Thunder will play back-to-back games against the two teams in the bottom half of the Eastern Conference.

Over the last two games, the Hornets have helped the Thunder by knocking out Dallas twice and moving Oklahoma City ahead of the Dallas Mavericks for the 10th spot in the Western Conference.

Over the course of the last few seasons, as they have undergone a significant rebuilding process, the Thunder have been the outnumbered but determined underdog.

Presently, Oklahoma City winds up on the opposite side of things as it hopes to knock off certain groups that aren’t in that frame of mind for a season finisher spot down the stretch.

In Portland on Sunday, the Thunder defeated the Trail Blazers 118-112 to end a two-game losing streak and maintain their position in the Western Conference as a play-in team.

Following its meeting with Charlotte, Oklahoma City will play the Detroit Pistons, and the Thunder (37-38) would rise above.500 for the first time since early November if they win both games.

The defense of Luguentz Dort has been a major factor in Oklahoma City’s recent success, as evidenced by the Thunder’s nine victories out of their last thirteen games.

In the Thunder’s 101-100 victory over the Clippers on Tuesday, Dort prevented Kawhi Leonard from making a last-second shot. On Sunday, Dort secured the victory when he stole the ball from Portland’s Shaedon Sharpe and dunked in the final seconds.

Coach Steve Clifford of the Charlotte Hornets announced on Monday that he would use centers Mark Williams, Nick Richards, and Kai Jones in a three-way rotation for the remaining six games.

Clifford predicted that Williams would be the odd man out on Tuesday and stated that it would make more sense to divide the minutes between just two of the three players rather than all three.

Williams scored 15 points and grabbed 16 rebounds in the Mavericks’ defeat on Sunday.

The teams will play each other for the second and final time this season on Tuesday.

On December 29, the Hornets (25-51) prevailed in Charlotte with a score of 121-113. In the entire history of the series, Charlotte has won four games in a row.

Since November 23, 2018, the Thunder have not defeated the Hornets in Oklahoma City.

Kelly Oubre Jr. (shoulder) and Terry Rozier (foot) of the Hornets have both missed the last two games. Oubre is in doubt, and Rozier will not play against the Thunder.

In the victory on Sunday, Oklahoma City was without Lindy Waters III because of plantar fasciitis.

NBA Preview: Orlando Magic (32-43) at Memphis Grizzlies (47-27)

0

The Memphis Grizzlies, who take a six-game winning streak into Tuesday’s game against the Orlando Magic, have Ja Morant back in the starting lineup.

In Sunday’s 123-119 victory over the Atlanta Hawks, Morant made his first start since serving an eight-game suspension. As he builds up his fitness, the two-time All-Star played 29 minutes and scored 27 points.

In the victory over Atlanta, Desmond Bane scored 25 points, and Jaren Jackson Jr., Xavier Tillman, and Xavier Tillman each scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds. With eight games remaining, Memphis (47-27) is in second place in the Western Conference.

Since being acquired from the Los Angeles Clippers on Feb. 9, guard Luke Kennard has provided the Grizzlies with a welcome boost. Kennard scored 30 points last Friday, matching his career high, in the team’s victory over the Houston Rockets. He is quickly becoming more familiar with the offense.

The Grizzlies are playing at FedEx Forum again, where they have won 11 games in a row and have the best home record in the NBA, 32-5. Orlando (32-43) is their opponent, having won three straight.

Morant and Jackson scored 63 points each in Orlando’s 123-115 defeat of Memphis on January 5.

The Magic beat the Brooklyn Nets 119-106 on Sunday. Cole Anthony scored 21 points to lead eight Magic players in double figures as Orlando outscored Brooklyn 58-38 in the paint.

Jalen Suggs (16 points) returned to the Magic after missing the previous four games with a concussion. Suggs, who has been injured for 29 games this season, played 24 minutes against Brooklyn and shot 6-of-9 from the floor.

The Magic are 13-24 when playing on the road, compared to 19-19 when playing at the Amway Center, but Anthony has scored at least 14 points and grabbed five rebounds in eight of their last ten games.

This month, Anthony has been a major contributor to Orlando’s resurgent offense. The Magic have scored at least 110 points in 12 of their last 13 games, averaging 117.2 points per game.

NBA Preview: Miami Heat (40-35) at Toronto Raptors (37-38)

0

When they play their final game of a four-game homestand against the Miami Heat on Tuesday night, the Toronto Raptors will attempt to reach.500 for the first time since Dec. 9.

Sunday, the Toronto Raptors (37-38) defeated the Washington Wizards 114-104 for their second win in a row.

Since they were 13-13, the Raptors have attempted to reach.500 six times.

The Raptors will play a team that is above.500 for the first time on their homestand against the Heat (40-35).

On Saturday, Miami suffered a humiliating 129-100 home defeat to the Brooklyn Nets.

Miami has lost the season series 2-1 to Toronto. The last time the teams met was on Nov. 16, when O.G. Anunoby scored 32 points to lead the Raptors to a 112-104 victory at home.

On Sunday, Toronto prevailed for the fifth time in the previous seven games, led by 29 points from Anunoby, 28 from Fred VanVleet, and 19 points from Pascal Siakam in addition to 11 rebounds. Scottie Barnes had a wrist injury that forced him to miss two games. He scored 13 points.

Going into Monday, the Raptors are ninth in the Eastern Conference and in good shape to secure a play-in spot.

The Raptors are currently three games behind the Heat, who are seventh in the Eastern Conference and still have a chance of finishing sixth and staying out of the play-in tournament.

The Heat’s last four games have been split.

The Heat are attempting to address their recent defensive issues.

Adebayo feels there has been an absence of correspondence in safeguard when the group is worn out.

NBA Preview: Cleveland Cavaliers (48-28) at Atlanta Hawks (37-28)

0

While the Atlanta Hawks’ situation continues to get more complicated, the Cleveland Cavaliers are making their return to the NBA playoffs for the first time since 2018.

On Tuesday at Atlanta, Atlanta and Cleveland will conclude their three-game season series.

No. 1 are the Cavaliers (48-28). 4 in the Eastern Conference, and they beat the Houston Rockets 108-91 on Sunday to secure their playoff spot. In each of the previous four seasons, Cleveland did not reach the playoffs.

With six games remaining, the Hawks (37-38) appear to be headed for the play-in tournament for the second year in a row, where they are tied with Toronto for eighth place in the East and three games behind sixth place.

Atlanta lost to the Memphis Grizzlies 123-119 on Sunday, ending a streak of seven games in which it had won and lost. Atlanta plays four of its final seven games at home.

The first two meetings between Cleveland and Atlanta ended in a draw. On November 21, the Cavaliers defeated Cleveland 114-102, while the Hawks defeated Atlanta 136-119 on February 24. The last four meetings in Atlanta have been won by the Hawks.

Donovan Mitchell scored 22 points and Jarrett Allen scored 24 points for Cleveland on Sunday.

Mitchell wants to become the fourth player in NBA history to average 27 points, 1.5 steals, and make more than 200 three-pointers on 37% shooting. He would play alongside James Harden (2014–15), Paul George (2018–19), and Stephen Curry (2015–16). Mitchell is shooting 37.9 percent from three on 3-pointers and is averaging a career-high 27.4 points, 1.5 steals.

In a trade with Utah in September, Mitchell was acquired. He has playoff experience in addition to his offensive skills. The Jazz equipped for the end of the season games every one of Mitchell’s five seasons with the group and he has turned into a vocal chief for the Cavs.

Clint Capela and reserve Onyeka Okongwu have provided Atlanta with outstanding post-game play in recent times. Capela scored 17 points and grabbed 17 rebounds against the Indiana Pacers and 18 points and grabbed 16 rebounds against the Memphis Grizzlies in the previous two games.

Over that time, Okongwu has scored 25 points and pulled down 13 rebounds, eight of them offensively. In the last eight games, he has had at least four offensive rebounds in six of them.
