NHL Morning Skate – March 30, 2023

* The “Comeback Cats” lived up to their nickname once again as Brandon Montour assisted on the tying tally with a minute remaining in regulation and scored the overtime winner to stun the Maple Leafs.

* The Central Division-leading Wild edged the third-place Avalanche to extend their road point streak to 11 games, which is one contest shy of the longest runs in the NHL this season.

* The Bruins and Golden Knights will have another opportunity to clinch the Presidents’ Trophy and a playoff berth, respectively, during Thursday’s 11-game slate, which also features the Hurricanes-Red Wings and Ducks-Kraken on ESPN+ and Hulu.

“COMEBACK CATS” RALLY PAST MAPLE LEAFS TO KEEP PLAYOFF HOPES ALIVE
Brandon Montour assisted on the tying goal by Sam Reinhart (1-1—2) in the final minute of regulation and scored the overtime winner as the Panthers (37-31-7, 81 points) stunned the Maple Leafs to move within one point of the idle Penguins (36-28-10, 82 points), who occupy the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference.

* Montour (14-49—63 in 73 GP) reached 63 points on the season and established a new franchise record for most in a campaign by a Florida defenseman. Montour’s career-high 14 goals in 2022-23 include five game winners, which moved him past Aaron Ekblad (4 in 2017-18, 2015-16 & 2014-15) for the highest single-season total among Panthers blueliners.

WILD WITHSTAND AVALANCHE TO BUILD CENTRAL DIVISION LEAD
Frederick Gaudreau became the first player in franchise history to score multiple shorthanded goals in a game and Filip Gustavsson got 42 saves as Minnesota (44-22-9, 97 points) defeated Colorado to open a three-point lead atop the Central Division standings. The Wild extended their road point streak to 11 contests (8-0-3 dating to Feb. 23), which marks the third longest in franchise history following a 14- and 12-game run in 2016-17 (12-0-2) and 2014-15 (12-0-0), respectively.

* Gustavsson has generated a .933 save percentage this season, which marks the second highest in the NHL behind Bruins goaltender Linus Ullmark (.937 SV%). The franchise record for highest single-season save percentage is held by Devan Dubnyk (.936 SV% in 2014-15).

SOROKIN SECURING SHOOTOUT WIN TO STRETCH STREAK FEATURED IN LIVE UPDATES
Wednesday’s edition of #NHLStats: Live Updates featured more notes from the three-game slate, including Ilya Sorokin (25 saves) stymying the Capitals in the shootout as the Islanders (39-28-9, 87 points) strengthened their grip on the first Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference.Sorokin improved to 8-1-1 in 10 appearances this month (2.29 GAA, .919 SV%), including a 5-0-1 mark in his last six dating to March 15 (2.14 GAA, .921 SV%).

NBA Preview: Boston Celtics (52-24) at Milwaukee Bucks (55-21)

0

Even though the visiting Boston Celtics and the Milwaukee Bucks are the two NBA teams with the best records, Tuesday’s 130-111 loss to the undermanned Washington Wizards took away some of the excitement surrounding the game.

Many anticipated that the game on Thursday would significantly impact the selection of the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs, but with the Celtics (52-24) trailing the Bucks (55-21) by three games with six games remaining in each team’s regular season, that seems less likely to happen now.

In Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals last season, the second-seeded Celtics defeated the third-seeded Bucks 109-81 at home.

The significance of Boston’s home-court advantage was downplayed by Jayson Tatum, who returned from a one-game absence caused by a hip injury on Tuesday and scored 28 points.

By defeating the Indiana Pacers 149-136 in Indianapolis on Wednesday, Milwaukee increased its lead over Boston. Jrue Holiday scored 51 points, a career-high, for the Bucks, along with eight rebounds and eight assists.

At Indiana, Giannis Antetokounmpo had 38 points, 17 rebounds, and 12 assists for a triple-double.

In the game on Thursday, three of the NBA’s top 10 scorers will be on display: Antetokounmpo is fifth with 31.2 points per game, Tatum is sixth with 30.1, and Jaylen Brown of Boston is ninth with 26.8.

Antetokounmpo said before this week with respect to the Eastern Meeting race, “We ought to take the (No. 1) spot. Playing Game 7 at home always makes me feel good. I don’t recall ever hosting a Game 7 in my career. I’ve played three Game 7s, all of which were played on the road, if my memory serves me correctly; therefore, I believe that the ability to not only have the No. 1 seed in the East yet the best record in the NBA and have that home-court advantage against everyone … that is a nice sentiment.”

Earlier this season, the Celtics and Bucks split two games, with each team winning at home. On Christmas Day, Tatum scored 41 points to help the Celtics win 139-118 in Boston. On Valentine’s Day, Holiday added 40 points to help Milwaukee win 131-125 in overtime. In the final game, the Celtics were without starters Tatum, Brown, Marcus Smart, and Al Horford.

MLS Preview: New York City FC (2-2-1) at New England Revolution (4-1-0)

0

In all competitions, the New England Revolution and New York City FC have split their last 12 meetings evenly, with each team winning five games and drawing two. A meeting in the 2021 Conference Semifinals was one of those draws, with New York City FC defeating the Revolutions on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

The New England Revolution’s 12 points from its first five games this season rank second in club history behind the club’s 13 points from its first five games in 2005. Before winning four of their first five games in 2023, the Revolution won just four of their final 18 games (D7 L7) last season.

New York City FC has lost seven of their last 10 ordinary season street games (W2 D1), remembering gathering only one point for the street this season (D1 L2). After scoring just once in its previous 12 games played on the road, New York City FC has failed to score in four of its last six regular season games played away from home.

On Saturday, the New England Revolution defeated D. C. United 1-0, and Noel Buck notched his second goal in Major League Soccer. Buck, who is 17 years, 354 days old, is the Revolutions’ second-youngest player to score multiple MLS goals. Only Diego Fagundez, who was 16 years, 299 days old in 2011, accomplished this feat at a younger age.

The penalty kick by Amine Bassi that resulted in the lone goal scored by Houston Dynamo FC on Saturday was the fourth set-piece goal that New York City FC has conceded this season. It is tied with the Portland Timbers for the most set-piece goals allowed in MLS. During the 2022 regular season, New York City FC conceded fewer set-piece goals than only the Philadelphia Union (7).

MMA Preview: Bellator 293 – Cat Zingano (13-4) vs Leah McCourt (7-2)

0

Cat Zingano is the No.1 fighter in the Bellator MMA Women’s Featherweight Rankings, sitting three spots above Leah McCourt. That said, the chances are that the winner of the Bellator 293 co-main event will get a shot at the title, which is currently held by Cris Cyborg.

Cat Zingano Going for Her Fourth Bellator MMA Win
Cat Zingano is 13-4 in her professional career, with all four losses happening during her UFC days. Plus, all of those defeats happened to true legends of the sport.

Her first-ever loss happened to Ronda Rousey in the UFC championship fight. Rowdey beat her by submission after only 14 seconds, which does seem bad. However, keep in mind that at the time Zingano was going through a bad period of her life, with her husband committing suicide only a year earlier. Speaking of which, she did destroy Amanda Nunes by TKO just five months after her husband’s death.

Zingano suffered one more loss inside the distance – Megan Anderson beat her by TKO in round 1 in 2018, but it came after Zingano injured her eye. The remaining two losses happened by a decision – to Juliana Pena (unanimous) and Katlen Vieira (split).

The loss to Anderson was her final UFC fight. Almost two years later, she made her Bellator MMA debut. It was an easy matchup (Gabby Holloway), but she then went on to beat two tougher opponents (Olivia Parker and Pam Sorenson). Still, her toughest challenge since coming to Bellator MMA is on the program this Friday.

Leah McCourt Could be the Next Big Think in Featherweight Division
Leah McCourt is only 30 but she already has a pretty impressive MMA portfolio. She’s 7-2 since the start of her professional career back in 2017. Before that, she competed in judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, winning gold medals on the international level.

Knowing this, it should come as no surprise that she’s an expert wrestler and grappler. On top of that, she also moves very fast, not letting her opponents land too many strikes. However, the fact is that she still hasn’t fought such a good striker as Zingano. That said, there’s a big question mark on whether she can handle Zingano’s power.

MLS Preview: Seattle Sounders (3-1-1) at Los Angeles Galaxy (0-1-3)

0

The Los Angeles Galaxy have beaten the Seattle Sounders just once in their last 16 meetings, which began in July 2016 (W8 D7), and the Sounders have won nine of those matches (W5 D4). In ten straight MLS matches against the Los Angeles Galaxy, no team has ever won.

For the fourth time since the shootout, the Los Angeles Galaxy have not won any of their first four games (D3 L1) (since 2000, 2002, 2009, and 2020). Los Angeles hasn’t lost any of its last eight home matches (W4 D4, including end of the season games), its longest unbeaten disagreement Carson in all rivalries since a 10-match run in 2018.

Saturday’s 4-1 victory over Sporting Kansas City brought an end to the Seattle Sounders’ 10-match losing streak away from home (D1 L9). It was just the Seattle Sounder’s fourth success in their last 27 street games in all rivalries (D8 L15) tracing all the way back to October 2021.

This is the fewest number of goals scored by the Los Angeles Galaxy after four games in a season in the club’s history. In fact, there have only been two goals scored and four goals conceded in Galaxy games this year, one less than Jordan Morris has managed for the Seattle Sounders on his own (7).

Jordan Morris became the third player in MLS history to score at least four goals in an away match on Saturday against Sporting Kansas City. He joins Raul Diaz Arce and Clint Mathis, who scored five goals against FC Dallas in 2000. Morris has scored more goals than Landon Donovan (8 in 2007) in his team’s first five MLS games.

MLS Preview: Real Salt Lake (1-3-0) at Columbus Crew SC (2-2-1)

0

Since June 2018, Real Salt Lake has not played at Columbus Crew SC. The Crew have won five of their last seven home games against Real Salt Lake in all competitions (W5 D2). Genuine Salt Lake’s just two successes in 14 visits to Columbus (D2 L10) were a 2-1 win in 2006 and a 3-2 win in the second leg of the 2009 Meeting Elimination rounds.

In Saturday’s victory over Atlanta United FC, the Columbus Crew SC equaled a club record by scoring six goals. This was the first time the team had scored six goals in a game since 2003. Columbus has dominated three straight home matches subsequent to winning only three of their past 11 at Lower.com Field (D6 L2).

Real Salt Lake has lost three straight counterparts interestingly under Pablo Mastroeni following a 4-0 misfortune to St. Louis City SC on Saturday. Only D. C. United (4) has won more games since the beginning of July 2022 than Real Salt Lake has (D6 L10).

Christian Ramirez made his Columbus Crew SC debut against Atlanta United FC on Saturday, scoring twice. This was his first MLS game since May 2021. Ramirez is the fifth player in MLS history to score on his club debut for three different teams (R. Lassiter 4, A. Razov, K. Cooper, and K. Kamara). He has done so for Columbus Crew SC, Minnesota United FC, and Houston Dynamo FC.

Real Salt Lake has committed a normal of simply 6.3 fouls per match this season, with no other group committing less than nine for every match. Over the course of an entire season, no team has committed fewer than 8.8 fouls per match since 2010 (Toronto FC in 2018).

MLS Preview: Inter Miami FC (2-3-0) at FC Cincinnati (3-0-2)

0

In the 2022 season, FC Cincinnati defeated Inter Miami FC 3-1 at home and 4-4 in South Florida to earn four points. Each of the first four meetings between the teams had been won by Inter Miami FC, including victories in FC Cincinnati in May and September 2021.

FC Cincinnati has won all five of its games so far this season (W3 D2), including victories over both opponents at TQL Stadium. FC Cincinnati has never recorded a three-match home series of wins in the club’s MLS history.

After starting the season with back-to-back victories, Inter Miami FC has lost three straight matches. Only the Chicago Fire in 1998 (which lost in a breakaway shootout) and D. C. United in 2022 have won six points in their first four games of a season before losing the rest.

Brandon Vasquez, who scored the lone goal for FC Cincinnati against Nashville SC on Saturday, has scored five goals in six games against Inter Miami FC, including two goals in both of their meetings last season. In FC Cincinnati’s MLS history, his five goals against the Herons were the most ever scored by a player against a single opponent.

In his first four games for Inter Miami FC, Josef Martinez hasn’t scored and hasn’t hit a goal in three of those games, all starts. His streak of four games without a goal, which spanned four matches in September and October 2018, is the longest of his MLS career.

MLS Preview: New York Red Bulls (1-1-3) at Atlanta United FC (3-1-1)

0

In their 14 previous encounters with Atlanta United FC (W9 D4), the New York Red Bulls have only lost once, to the Atlanta United FC in the first leg of the 2018 Conference Final. Chicago Fire vs. Tampa Bay Rowdies (though Chicago did lose one breakaway shootout to the Mutiny) has played 12 regular season matches without ever losing for more than 90 minutes in MLS history.

In its defeat to the Columbus Crew SC on Saturday, Atlanta United FC conceded a club record six goals after allowing just three goals in its first four games of 2023. The match saw goals scored from all seven shots, including Atlanta’s one frame shot.

The New York Red Bulls have lost three of their last four games, including Saturday’s 1-1 tie against Charlotte FC (W1). From late May 2022 to the first match of the 2023 season, New York had only drawn three of its 23 regular-season games (W10 L10).

Thiago Almada still leads MLS in goal contributions with eight (4 goals, 4 assists) despite missing the match on Saturday due to international duty. Almada has four more shot involvements than any other MLS player this season, with 19 shots and 17 chances created.

The New York Red Bulls held Charlotte FC to just one goal on Saturday, and they have only had seven goals this season through five MLS games, the fewest since at least 2010.

Boxing Preview: Harlem Eubank (16-0-0, 6 KOs) vs Christian Uruzquieta (21-5-2 8 KOs)

Harlem Eubank, cousin of Chris Eubank Jr, had a special guest at his media day ahead of his clash with Christian Uruzquieta on Friday night. The unbeaten super lightweight was joined by Marnie Swindells, the founder of Bronx LDN gym and the winner of this year’s The Apprentice.

Swindells, who impressed Lord Alan Sugar with her business plan to open a chain of boxing-themed gyms, invited Eubank to train at her flagship facility in Camberwell, London. She also showed off her skills on the pads, as she helped Eubank sharpen up for his headline fight at York Hall, live and free-to-air on Channel 5 from 10pm.

Eubank, who has a perfect record of 16 wins and no losses, is aiming to make a statement against Uruzquieta, a tough Mexican who has never been stopped in 25 fights. The Brighton-born boxer, who comes from a famous boxing family, is hoping to secure a shot at the British title next year and follow in the footsteps of his uncle Chris Eubank Sr, a former two-time world champion.
