Club Designates right-handed pitcher Ryan Brasier for Assignment

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today reinstated left-handed pitcher Joely Rodriguez from the 15-Day Injured List. To make room for Rodriguez on the active roster, the club designated right-handed pitcher Ryan Brasier for assignment. The Red Sox’ 40-man roster is now at 39.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Rodriguez, 31, was placed on the 15-Day Injured List on March 30 (retroactive to March 27) with a right oblique strain. He made five rehab appearances with Triple-A Worcester and Double-A Portland, allowing one run in 5.1 innings with nine strikeouts and one walk. The left-hander has posted a 4.59 ERA (74 ER/146.0 IP) in 157 career relief appearances with the Philadelphia Phillies (2016-17), Texas Rangers (2020-21), New York Yankees (2021), and New York Mets (2022). From 2018-19, he pitched for the Chunichi Dragons of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball. Rodriguez was signed by Boston as a free agent on November 23, 2022.

Brasier, 35, appeared in last night’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals and allowed three runs over 2.1 innings. The right-hander has posted a 7.29 ERA (17 ER/21.0 IP) in 20 outings this season. Signed by the Red Sox as a free agent prior to the 2018 season, Brasier owns a 4.55 ERA (106 ER/209.2 IP) over 222 games (one start) for Boston (2018-23). His 221 relief appearances for the Red Sox rank 19th in franchise history.

A’s reinstate RHP Martínez from injured list; option RHP Neal to Las Vegas

0

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s reinstated right-handed pitcher Adrián Martínez from the 15-day injured list and optioned right-handed pitcher Zach Neal to Triple-A Las Vegas, the club announced today.

Martínez was on the A’s Opening Day roster and was 0-0 with a 6.75 ERA in six relief appearances when he was placed on the 15-day injured list April 24 retroactive to April 23 with a strained right elbow.  He made two rehab appearances with Las Vegas on May 9 and 12, including one start, and was 0-2 with a 10.80 ERA.  Martinez allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks in 3.1 innings with the Aviators.

Neal was recalled from Las Vegas on May 11 and allowed three runs on four hits in 3.1 innings over two relief appearances with the A’s.  He is 0-0 with a 5.56 ERA and .182 opponents batting average in three games, two starts, with Las Vegas.

Cubs make selective roster moves

HOUSTON – The Chicago Cubs today recalled right-handed pitcher Jeremiah Estrada from Triple-A Iowa and placed right-handed pitcher Brad Boxberger on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to May 14) with a right forearm strain. Additionally, the club selected right-handed pitcher Nick Burdi from Iowa, optioned right-handed pitcher Hayden Wesneski to Iowa and transferred right-handed pitcher Adrian Sampson to the 60-day injured list.

Estrada, 24, is in his second stint with the Cubs this season, after tossing 4.0 scoreless innings in three relief appearances from April 21-May 3. The righthander has posted a 0.96 ERA (1 ER/9.1 IP) in eight appearances out of the bullpen for Iowa this year, with six hits, four walks and 12 strikeouts. With the I-Cubs, he has limited opponents to a .176 batting average (6-for-34) and posted a 1.07 WHIP.

Since his major league debut August 30, 2022, Estrada has pitched to a 1.86 ERA (2 ER/9.2 IP) with 14 strikeouts in eight career major league relief appearances. Last year between High-A South Bend, Double-A Tennessee and Iowa, he went 3-2 with a 1.30 ERA (7 ER/48.1 IP), nine saves and five holds in 34 games out of the bullpen. Estrada struck out 78 of 193 batters faced, compared to 20 walks, for an average of 14.5 strikeouts per nine innings pitched.

A native of Coachella, Calif., Estrada was selected in the sixth round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft out of Palm Desert (Calif.) High School. In all or part of five minor league seasons, he is 4-4 with nine saves and a 1.84 ERA (20 ER/97.2 IP) in 60 games, all but three as a reliever. He has walked 42 and struck out 149, good for an average of 13.5 strikeouts per 9.0 innings.

Burdi, 30, in 11 relief outings for Iowa in 2023 has pitched to a 3.38 ERA (4 ER/10.2 IP) with four saves and 19 strikeouts, good for an average of 16.0 strikeouts per 9.0 IP. He has held opponents scoreless in nine of his 11 games this season and recorded two-plus strikeouts in seven of those outings. The right-handed pitcher was a non-roster invitee to Chicago’s major league Spring Training after being selected by the Cubs from San Diego in the minor league portion of the 2022 Rule 5 Draft.

A second round selection in the 2014 draft by Minnesota, the six-foot four-inch Burdi has appeared in 16 career major league games, all in relief with the Pirates from 2018-20, pitching to a 9.49 ERA (13 ER/12.1 IP) with one save. The righthander owns a 10-8 record with a 3.44 ERA (48 ER/125.2 IP) and 14 saves in 101 career minor league games in the Minnesota (2014-17), Pittsburgh (2018-20) and Cubs (2023) organizations. Burdi missed the 2021 and 2022 seasons after recovering from Tommy John surgery and a subsequent right elbow sprain.

Boxberger, 34, is 0-1 with a 5.52 ERA (9 ER/14.2 IP) in 17 games out of the bullpen for Chicago this season. The righthander signed a one-year contract with the Cubs in December 2022.

Wesneski, 25, is 2-2 with a 5.03 ERA (22 ER/39.1 IP) in eight starts for the Cubs this season, having walked nine with 28 strikeouts and 10 home runs allowed.

Sampson, 31, has posted an 8.64 ERA (8 ER/8.1 IP) in two starts with Iowa this season. He was recalled and placed on the 15-day injured list with a right meniscus injury May 4.

0

PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES NOTES:

GAME #40 RECAP: The Phillies were shut out by the Colorado Rockies, 4-0, on a getaway day at Coors Field … Starter Aaron Nola (L, 3-3) went 7.0 innings and allowed 4 runs on 6 hits with 1 walk and 4 strikeouts … The Phillies went 0-for-14 with runners in scoring position and left 10 on base, yet out hit the Rockies, 7- 6 … Rob Thomson was ejected for the first time as manager and Bryce Harper was later ejected along with Rockies reliever, Jake Bird.

BEST WISHES, KENNY: Today marks Kenny Ayres’ final day with the Phillies Baseball Communications department following an eight-year run that began on January 12, 2015 … His time in Baseball Communications (1,234 regular season games and 17 postseason games) culminated with last year’s run to the World Series and memories that will be sure to last a lifetime … On behalf of everyone in the Phils’ Baseball Communications department, thank you Kenny, and best wishes to you, Jenna, and the boys.

REMEMBER THE FIGHTINS: The Phillies have won five of their last six games (since 5/7) during which Philadelphia’s pitching has combined for a 2.33 ERA (14 ER, 54.0 IP) with 54 strikeouts to only seven walks (7.71 SO/BB ratio) … Yesterday’s loss snapped a season-best five-game winning streak (5/7-13) … The Phillies have won each of their last two series (2-0 vs TOR, 2-1 at COL) and are 6-2-1 in their last nine series played (since 4/13 at CIN) – Philadelphia’s only two series losses in the past month have come against the Dodgers in LA (0-3) and Red Sox at CBP (1-2).

GOT THAT DOG IN HIM: In his first game back from Tommy John Surgery (160 days from the procedure), Bryce Harper went 0-for-4 with 3 strikeouts on 5/2 at Dodger Stadium … Since then, he is 13-for-35 at the plate with 11 runs scored, 3 doubles, 2 home runs, 5 RBI and 5 walks to 9 strikeouts … He is slashing .371/.450/.629 with a 1.079 OPS in 40 plate appearances in that span (since 5/3) … Saturday night, Harper hit a 2-run 9th inning home run to put the Phils up 7-4 (110.2 MPH/439 feet) … In “Close & Late” situations (7th inning or later with the batting team ahead by one run, tied, or with the tying run on base, at bat or on deck), Harper is 5-for-10 with a 1.400 OPS this season … Since the start of last season (regular and postseason combined), Harper has come to the plate 77 times in close and late situations – he is 21-for-65 with 6 doubles, 6 home runs, 21 RBI and 10 walks to 16 strikeouts (.323/.416/.692) … His 1.108 OPS ranks 1st among 215 players in MLB with at least 75 PA in close and late situations since 2022 (regular and postseason combined).

GLOVELY: Second baseman Bryson Stott has a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in 148 total chances at second base this year … Stott leads the Phillies this season with 6 Defensive Runs Saved (DRS) and ranks T-3rd among all MLB second basemen, trailing only SD’s Ha-seong Kim (8 DRS) & TEX’s Marcus Semien (7 DRS) … Stott has played 84 career games at second base (78 GS) and has not made an error in 317 total chances to begin his career … Per Elias, Stott has the longest errorless streak at second base to begin a Phillies career – he eclipsed Tomas Perez’s previous streak of 57 games, April 2, 2001-August 2, 2002 … The last major league second baseman to start his career at second base with 82 consecutive errorless games was Christian Arroyo who went 108 straight games from May 16, 2017-Sept. 28, 2022.

ANGEL IN THE OUTFIELD: Center fielder Brandon Marsh has more than doubled his walk rate from 6.1% last season to 15.7% entering play tonight … His 9.6% jump in walk rate from last year is the largest spike of any player in baseball from 2022 to 2033 and his 15.7% walk rate ranks 6th in the National League and 10th in MLB … Marsh has multiple walks in three of his last five games (since 5/9) … He reached 21 walks for the season yesterday in his 133rd plate appearance … Last season, Marsh reached 21 walks on July 29th in his 315th plate appearance (182 plate appearances faster in 2023) … Marsh is slashing .295/.410/.545 with a .955 OPS this year – his 161.1 OPS+ ranks 3rd in the National League, trailing only ATL’s Ronald Acuna Jr. (175.8) and ATL’s Sean Murphy (164.2) … Per Statcast rankings, Marsh ranks in the 95th percentile in walk rate, 90th percentile in sprint speed (28.7 ft/sc) & outs above average (2), 89th percentile in average exit velocity (92.4 MPH), 88th percentile in hard hit rate (50.0%) and 82nd percentile in arm strength (89.3 MPH).

CASTY’S BACK, TELL A FRIEND: Phils right fielder Nick Castellanos has gotten ahead 1-0 in 55 plate appearances this season – after taking ball one, Castellanos is slashing .449/.509/.755 with a 1.264 OPS that ranks 5th out of 215 MLB players with at least 40 plate appearances that start 1-0 … He has nine extra-base hits (6 2B, 3 HR) after getting ahead 1-0 … Last season, Castellanos got ahead 1-0 in 174 plate appearances and totaled only 10 extra-base hits as he slashed .197/.276/.299 with a .575 OPS that ranked 201st out of 203 qualified hitters.

BULLISH ON THE PEN: Since April 16, the Phillies bullpen has combined to post a 2.64 ERA (24 ER, 81.2 IP) in 25 games with 99 strikeouts (10.91 SO/9.0 IP) … The bullpen is 10-for-12 in save opportunities in that span … This stretch includes three games at Dodger Stadium from May 1-3 – in those three games, the bullpen allowed 18 ER in 11.1 IP (14.29 ERA) with a blown save … If you subtract those three games from the bullpen’s totals, since April 16, they have a 0.77 ERA (6 ER, 70.1 IP) in 22 games.

ON THE DOORSTEP OF HISTORY: Right-hander Craig Kimbrel has 1,122 career strikeouts which currently ranks 12th all-time among MLB relievers – Kenley Jansen ranks 11th at 1,124 and Hall-of-Famer Trevor Hoffman ranks 10th at 1,133 … Over his last 11 appearances (since 4/16) Kimbrel has struck out 20 of the 39 batters he has faced (51.3%) while walking only three (7.7%) … Kimbrel is two saves away from 400 for his career as he looks to become only the 8th pitcher in MLB history to reach 400.

SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS NOTES:

HOME SWEET HOME: The Giants return home for a six-game homestand after a quick four-game road trip in Arizona…SF has been much better at home with a 10-10 record at Oracle Park this season compared to a 7-13 record as the visiting team…that’s due in most part to the Giants winning eight of their last 12 contests on the Shores of McCovey Cove.

FIELD OF DREAMS AND NIGHTMARES: SF has dominated the Phillies at Oracle Park in recent years…Stats, LLC notes that since 2014, SF’s 20-6 record at home vs. Philadelphia is tied for the sixth-best mark in MLB against a single opponent (min. 15 games)…the Giants have won or split their last eight home series against PHI (Stats, LLC).

WE LOVE WATCHING IT FLY: SF has set a franchise record for most home runs through the team’s first 40 games with 62 this season (Stats, LLC)…the MLB record is 85 set by the Cardinals in 2000…SF’s 62 homers in 2023 rank fourth in MLB behind Tampa Bay (81), Los Angeles-NL (68) and Atlanta (64).

THAT’S A LOT OF TONY BENNETT: The Giants, the winningest club in MLB history, can become the first franchise to reach 11,500 wins (including playoffs) with a victory tonight over Philadelphia (Stathead)…the Giants have won their most regular season games against the Dodgers franchise (1,193)… rounding out the top-3 are the Reds with 1,143 victories and tonight’s opponent, the Phillies, with 1,139.

JUST A SCHMITTY BOY: SF IF Casey Schmitt, the Giants’ No. 4 prospect on MLB.com, closed out his first road trip with his first career hitless day…even with the 0-for-4 yesterday, Schmitt is 11-for-24 (.458) with five runs, three doubles, two home runs, five RBI and a 1.291 OPS in six games…his 11 hits over his first six games are fourth-most in Giants history (since 1901), trailing only Jim Davenport, Al Gallagher and Willie McCovey.

HE GETS ON BASE: Even with his career-best 19-game on-base streak being snapped yesterday, IF LaMonte Wade Jr. is hitting .306 (22-for-72) with 13 runs scored, six homers, 11 RBI, .419 OBP and a 1.044 OPS since April 20…overall this season, Wade’s 27 walks are tied for fifth-most in MLB, his .936 OPS ranks ninth, he ranks third with an 18.6% walk rate and his .427 on-base percentage is fourth.

FEELING CONFORT-ABLE: SF OF Michael Conforto has been on a tear since getting the day off on May 9…he has reached base in each of his last five games, homering in three of them, with four RBI, five runs, two walks and one strikeout in 20 plate appearances…his six home runs in day games trails only the eight hit by New York-NL IF Pete Alonso (Stats, LLC)… Conforto has 22 career home runs and 69 RBI against the Phillies, both ranking second-most by any player since 2015 and trailing only Freddie Freeman (25 & 87).

BY THE NUMBERS: Giants pitchers lead MLB with a 50.4% ground ball rate, over 2.0% better than the next closest team (Tampa Bay with 48.1%)…Philadelphia hits a lot of ground balls, ranking eighth with a 44.3% offensive ground ball rate…three Phillies rank inside MLB’s top-25 in ground ball percentage in OF Nick Castellanos (50.0%), IF Bryson Stott (50.4%) and IF Alec Bohm (50.4%)…while the Giants have been good at keeping it on the ground, they’ve been punished when the ball is put in the air, with an MLB-worst 15.9% HR/FB.

WOOD YOU LOOK AT THAT: Today’s starter, LHP Alex Wood, rarely falls behind on the first pitch of an at-bat as shown in the chart below…also making the list is Philadelphia’s RHP Aaron Nola, who ranks second. Active MLB, 1st-Pitch Strike Percentage, min. 150 starts (Stats, LLC)

Kyle Hendricks 65.6%
Aaron Nola 65.5%
Clayton Kershaw 65.2%

Jose Quintana 64.9%
Jacob deGrom 64.9%
Alex Wood 64.6%

STREAKY: A loss tonight would give SF its third losing streak this season of at least four games…the only other team to have three losing streaks of four or more is Oakland, with four.

TODAY’S STARTER – ALEX WOOD LHP #57
2023 RECORD: 0-0, 2.45 ERA

WITH THE GIANTS: Is in his third season with the Giants…signed a two-year Major League contract with San Francisco on December 1, 2021 after spending the 2021 season in a Giants uniform… tonight will mark his 245th game and 194th start in his career.

LAST START: Wood last pitched out of the bullpen on Friday vs. the D-backs, working 1.0 inning while allowing three hits, one earned run and a walk…it was his first appearance out of the bullpen since 2020…he has not started a game this year since he faced the Marlins on April 18 and had to leave the game after suffering a hamstring injury attempting to field a sacrifice bunt from Jean Segura… Wood did not factor into that decision as he only tossed 2.1 innings before exiting, allowing a hit, an earned run, and a walk while striking out three.

VS. PHILLIES: Has faced the Phillies 15 times in his career (10 starts) and has a 3-3 record with a 3.79 ERA (25er, 59.1ip), allowing 67 hits, 52 strikeouts and 16 walks…did not face them last season.

GET ‘EM BITING: Wood’s first pitch strike percentage is 51.9% after four games this season…batters are swinging at that first pitch 40.5% of the time and have an overall swing and miss rate of 23.5%…last year Wood threw a first pitch strike 63.5% with batters swinging at the first pitch 48.1% of the time…opposing batters had a swing and miss rate of 25.0% overall last season vs. Wood.

FLY AWAY: Since joining SF in 2021, Wood is 8-9 with a 4.85 ERA (69er, 128.0ip) in 27 road starts…SF is 14-13 in those games…if you look at his last 10 starts away from home, Wood is 3-4 with a 6.48 ERA (30er, 41.2ip) with a batting average against of .267 (44- for-165)…SF is 4-6 in those nine games.

LEFTOVERS: Wood dominated left-handed batters last season, holding them to a .193 average (23-for-119) with five walks and 36 strikeouts…he allowed just three extra-base hits against lefties (one HR and two doubles) all year and posted a .464 OPS overall… right-handers hit .283 (109-for-385) with a .800 OPS.

MY SALES PITCH: His go-to pitch last season was the sinker, as he used the pitch 45.5% of the time…he recorded 68 of his 131 strikeouts last year with his sinker…that was in contrast to his first season with SF in 2021 where he still used the sinker about the same percentage of the time (46.4%) but his main strikeout pitch was the slider as he recorded 91 of his 152 strikeouts (59.8%) that year.

ORDER UP…: In 2022, Wood limited opposing hitters to a .645 OPS and a .241 average the first time through the order…the second time through those numbers went up to a .706 OPS and a .256 average…the third time through opponents had a .941 OPS and a .326 average off Wood…after three starts this season opposing hitters have a .546 OPS and a .143 batting average and a .701 OPS and .313 batting average second time around.

PACING: Averaged 15.1 seconds between pitches when the bases were empty during the 2022 season, 25th-quickest in the Majors last year (league average is 18.1 seconds)…with runners on however, Wood slows it down a bit, averaging 21.3 seconds between pitches…that rate was still well under league average (23.3 seconds).

MLB Preview: Minnesota Twins (23-18) at Los Angeles Dodgers (26-15)

0

MINNESOTA TWINS NOTES:

THE TWINS: The Twins completed their six-game homestand with a record of 4-2, going 2-1 vs. San Diego last week, then 2-1 against Chicago-NL over the weekend…tonight, the Twins will begin a six-game, seven-day road-trip with three against the Dodgers through Wednesday, followed by an off-day Thursday, then play three against the Angels in Anaheim from Friday-Sunday…the Twins have gone 14-8 at Target Field and 9-10 on the road.

TWINS CLEAN IT UP FOR ALL THE MOMS: The Twins celebrated Mother’s Day by beating the Cubs yesterday afternoon at Target Field by a score of 16-3, their largest margin of victory this season…Louie Varland (1-0) was the starter and winner, allowing three runs on four hits in 6.1 innings pitched…the offense recorded season highs in runs and hits (18)…each player in the starting lineup had a hit as seven Twins had multiple hits…additionally, seven different Twins had at least two RBI as Trevor Larnach drove in four…Larnach (4), Joey Gallo (9) and Michael A. BRAD KELLER will make his 9th start of the season—and 114th start of his career— tonight vs. the Padres, which will mark his 1st career start (3rd appearance) against them…he’s in his sixth Major League season after being acquired by Kansas City in a trade with Cincinnati, who selected him from Arizona in the 2017 Rule 5 Draft.

CONSISTENCY IS KEY: Brad earned his team-leading 3rd win of the season after recording his 4th start (out of 8) of at least 5.0 innings pitched and only 1 run allowed in his outing last Wednesday vs. the White Sox, a 9-1 Royals victory…he pitched around a pair of walks to lead off the 1st inning—with the help of a 5-4-3 double play—but his leadoff walk in the 2nd came around to score two batters later on an RBI single from Hanser Alberto…following that RBI hit, he retired 10 of his next 13 batters through the 5th inning, including erasing a leadoff single in the 5th on a 1-4-3 double play, and exited after the frame in a 7-1 lead, giving way to the Kansas City bullpen which shut down Chicago’s offense over the final 4.0 frames.

Marked his 3rd start of 2023 in which he allowed more walks (4) than hits (3).

He’s allowed only 3 hits in 4 of his 8 starts this season, which is tied for the 5th-most such games in the Majors, trailing only Shohei Ohtani (6), Dustin May (6), Drew Rasmussen (5) and Chris Bassitt (5).

WILD THING: Keller has issued 32 walks over 8 starts this season—including 24 over his last 5 outings since April 18—and he leads the Majors in walks allowed this season, ahead of Miami’s Edward Cabrera (30)…these numbers are slightly skewed due to some bad luck, as Keller has thrown 14 pitches inside the strike zone this year that were called balls, which is tied for the 17th most such calls for any American League pitcher (according to Baseball Savant)…of those 14 such pitches, 9 have been thrown over his last 4 starts since April 24—a stretch in which he’s issued 19 walks—and 4 of those 12 plate appearances resulted in a walk.

He’s the first Royal with at least 24 walks in any 5-start span within a single season in 23 years, since Dan Reichert walked 24 from July 16-Aug. 6, 2000.

NO TROUBLE WITH THE CURVE: Over his first 6 starts of the season, Keller relied on his new curveball 23.6% of the time and the pitch yielded a 30.1% whiff rate, which according to Baseball Savant was the 9th-best mark in the American League off the pitch (min. 25 PA)…over his last 2 starts since the calendar flipped to May, he’s only utilized his curveball 7.1% of the time, a dramatic dip in his use of the pitch, and he hasn’t recorded any swings and misses off it…he still ranks 10th in the AL this season with 22 swings and misses off his curveball, trailing leader Domingo Germán (52).

SEASONED VETERAN: Keller is pitching in his sixth Major League season, and since his debut in 2018, he leads all Royals in wins (38), starts (113), innings pitched (673.1) and strikeouts (504)…his 673.1 innings also rank 7th in the American League since the start of 2018, trailing only Gerrit Cole (924.1), José Berríos (865.2), Lucas Giolito (816.1), Marco Gonzales (802.1), Lance Lynn (772.0) and Shane Bieber (754.2).

Among all pitchers who have made their Majors debut since 2018, Keller’s 113 starts rank 2nd, behind Bieber (119)…his 673.1 innings also rank 2nd among that group of pitchers—trailing Bieber—and his 38 wins are tied for the 8th most, as Bieber is leading the way with 57 wins since his 2018 debut.

Brad recorded his 500th career strikeout in his start on May 5 against the Athletics, becoming the 18th different pitcher in Royals history to eclipse that milestone…he’s now just 4 strikeouts shy of matching Bud Black and Ian Kennedy (508) for 16th on the franchise’s all-time strikeout list.

DECISIONS, DECISIONS: Keller did not earn a decision in his 2 starts from April 24-29, snapping his streak of starts with a decision at 19 dating back to last May 21, a stretch in which he went 7-12 with a 5.42 ERA (60 ER in 99.2 IP) and 7 quality starts…he had the longest run of starts with a decision by a Royal since Tim Belcher earned a decision in 21 consecutive starts from Sept. 2, 1996-June 20, 1997…it was the longest streak in the Majors since Jacob deGrom had 20 straight starts with a decision for the Mets from May 19-Sept. 5, 2017, and the longest in the American League since Hisashi Iwakuma had 23 straight starts from May 20-Sept. 20, 2016 with Seattle.

Royals Hall of Famer Dennis Leonard holds the club record of 26 straight starts with a decision (Aug. 26, 1997-June 23, 1978), in which he went 14-12.

FROM THE GROUND UP: Keller has a career 52.8% groundball rate, which ranks tied with Max Fried for 3rd in the Majors since the start of his
2018 debut season (min. 600.0 IP), trailing only Dallas Keuchel (55.2%) and Marcus Stroman (54.8%)…likewise, his lifetime HR/9 rate of 0.83
(62 HR in 673.1 IP) ranks 4th in the Majors since 2018 (min. 600.0 IP), behind Jacob deGrom (0.71), Zack Wheeler (0.73) and Fried (0.78).

His 58.3% groundball rate ranks 4th in the Majors in 2023 (min. 35.0 IP), behind Alex Cobb (64.8%), Framber Valdez (64.0%) & Logan Webb (59.9%).

He’s induced 10 double plays in 8 starts this season and has an AL-leading 86 since the start of 2018, 6 more than Seattle’s Marco Gonzales (80).

NEW IN TOWN: Tonight will mark Brad’s 1st career start vs. the Padres (3rd appearance), and Petco Park will become the 26th different ballpark in which he’s appeared in a Major League game, leaving only Citi Field, LoanDepot Park, Dodger Stadium, Citizens Bank Park and Coors Field as active stadiums he has yet to pitch in…he faced San Diego in a pair of relief outings last August at Kauffman Stadium and pitched only 1.0 combined inning.

In 27 career Interleague games (22 starts), he’s 10-8 with a 3.93 ERA (57 ER in 130.2 IP), including a win in his start on April 7 in San Francisco, where he pitched 5.2 innings of 1-run ball…he’s one of seven Royals with at least 75.0 innings pitched vs. National League teams, and his 3.93 ERA trails only Danny Duffy (3.49) in that group…his 97 career Interleague strikeouts rank 3rd in club history, behind Duffy (140) and Zack Greinke (133).

ON THE ROAD AGAIN: He’s pitched into the 6th inning in 10 of his last 12 starts on the road since last April 28, including in 3 of his 4 road starts this year in San Francisco, Texas and Minnesota, where he covered a combined 17.2 innings with only 3 runs allowed (1.53 ERA)…he’s won 5 of his last 7 starts away from home since June 18, 2022, with the only exceptions being last Aug. 2 at the White Sox (L), April 24 at Arizona (ND) and April 29 at Minnesota (ND).
