MMA Preview: UFC 223 – Edmen Shahbazyan (12-2-1) vs Anthony Hernandez (10-2-0)

Edmen Shahbazyan is a fantastic striker with a knockout-to-win ratio of 83.33%. His opponent in the UFC Fight Night 223 co-main event is Anthony Hernandez, an expert grappler who’s got a submission-to-win ratio of 70%.

Edmen Shahbazyan vs Anthony Hernandez Odds

MoneylineOdds
Edmen Shahbazyan+200
Anthony Hernandez-260

Odds taken from Sports Odds Direct on Thursday, May 18, 2023.

Now a 25-year-old, Edmen Shahbazyan started his MMA career in 2017 in CXF. After going 6-0, he took part in Dana White’s Contender Series, where he beat his opponent by TKO. Next came an appearance in The Ultimate Fighter, where he won by a split decision. It wasn’t a vintage performance by Shahbazyan, but it did bring him a UFC contract.

He then went on to win his first three UFC fights before hitting a rough patch, losing three fights in a row. Those three defeats are probably why oddsmakers see him as the underdog in Saturday’s co-main event.

However, one should keep in mind that he’s already put an end to his losing streak. In his most recent fight, Shahbazyan defeated Dalcha Lungiambula by TKO, for which the UFC awarded him the Performance of the Night bonus.

The impressive win has certainly given him a morale boost, which is why he’s coming to Vegas with his head held high. Still, beating Anthony Hernandez won’t be easy, especially not if the two end up on the floor.

Anthony Hernandez is a fantastic wrestler/grappler who also does well striking-wise. He’s 12-2-1 overall, with just one win by KO/TKO. However, the one fight that got declared a no-contest was originally a KO win for Hernandez – it was later overturned after he tested positive for marijuana.

What needs to worry Hernandez ahead of Saturday’s fight is that his rival has fists of concrete. The trouble is that he’s not great when it comes to strike defense, getting hit 53% of the time by the opponents.

He got knocked out only once in his professional career, which happened against Kevin Holland who’s a great boxer. Still, Shahbazyan isn’t much behind him striking-wise.

Boxing Preview: Katie Taylor (22-0-0, 6 KOs) vs Chantelle Cameron (17-0-0, 8 KOs)

Katie Taylor has the chance to become a two-weight undisputed World Champion when she takes on undisputed Super-Lightweight World Champion Chantelle Cameron in a historic homecoming fight at the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland on Saturday May 20, shown live worldwide on DAZN.

Irish legend Taylor (22-0, 6 KOs) fights in Ireland for the first time in her professional career as she bids to create even more history and further cement herself as the greatest female fighter on the planet when she meets England’s Cameron.

Taylor edged out Amanda Serrano in an epic fight for the ages on an iconic night at a sold-out Madison Square Garden in New York last April. The global superstar retained her Undisputed Lightweight World Title belts after a Fight of the Year contender with multi-division World Champion Serrano.

It was the first women’s boxing bout to headline the famous MSG in its 140-year history, attracting an unprecedented audience of 1.5 million tuning in globally on DAZN. The rivals were set to rematch in Dublin on May 20 until Serrano withdrew due to injury last month.

Northampton’s Cameron (17-0, 8 KOs) achieved a lifetime dream by outpointing the USA’s Jessica McCaskill to be crowned undisputed at 140lbs at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates last November.

Cameron captured the famous green and gold WBC 140lbs World Title by widely outpointing Brazil’s Adriana dos Santos Arauja behind closed doors at the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes back in October 2020.

‘Il Capo’ looked sensational as she stopped Puerto Rico’s Melissa Hernandez in five rounds during the first defence of her crown the following year in her US debut at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas.

The 31-year-old added the IBF and inaugural Ring Magazine World Titles to her collection by decisioning Indiana’s Mary McGee in an all-action main event at The O2 in London in October 2021 before defending her titles with another unanimous decision points win over Victoria Noelia Bustos in May last year.

“Once Serrano pulled out this was the natural fight to make,” said Taylor. “It’s two undefeated, reigning Undisputed World Champions going up against each other and I believe that’s the first time that’s ever happened in the modern era of the sport.

“People have been talking about this fight for a long time now so I’m delighted it’s happening and I’m looking forward to becoming a two-weight Undisputed Champion in Dublin on May 20.” “It feels surreal that the fight is actually happening,” said Cameron.

“It feels like my whole professional career has been based around this fight and I never imagined it would actually happen for one reason or another.

“I’m no stranger to boxing away from home now and to be going into Katie’s backyard for her homecoming is massive. I’m glad to be a part of history again like I was in Abu Dhabi. I know what I will be up against and that I am the underdog but I relish that. The fight will be electric. We both are experienced, we are both game and we are both are coming to win

“To successfully defend my belts against Taylor will be the icing on the cake for me. To become undisputed and then defend them against the pound-for-pound best in women’s boxing will really mark my place in women’s boxing and create my own legacy.”

“I can’t wait to be a part of the historic moment when Katie Taylor makes her homecoming in Ireland to attempt to make history and become a two-weight undisputed Champion,” said Matchroom Sport Chairman Eddie Hearn. “For the first time in her career Katie Taylor called an opponent out because that’s how important this moment is for her. She called out in my opinion the most dangerous test in boxing for her at this time – the undisputed Super-Lightweight World Champion Chantelle Cameron. This fight has been talked about for many years and we always said that when the timing was right Katie would have no problem accepting the challenge.

“For Chantelle, she has done everything that has been asked of her – became World Champion, unified the division and became undisputed at the end of last year. She is a formidable fighter who has always believed she can beat Katie Taylor. On May 20 you will see one of the greatest nights in Irish sporting history as the icon of Irish boxing will be part of an event that will have the eyes of the world watching. We’re building an incredible undercard to accompany a wonderful main event which I think will surpass even the heights of Taylor vs. Serrano. Get ready Ireland, we’re coming! We look forward to an incredible night. Watch it live around the world on DAZN.”

“First of all we wish Amanda all the best in her recovery from injury,” said Joe Markowski, CEO DAZN North America. “Secondly, our thanks to Eddie and the team for pulling this thrilling matchup out the bag to mark Katie’ historic return to Ireland. Chantelle Cameron is a fantastic fighter and will be a tough test for Katie. I for one, cant wait! Watch this brilliant fight live and exclusive on DAZN”.

Boxing Preview: Terri Harper (13-1-1, 6 KOs) vs Cecilia Braekhus (37-2-0, 9 KOs)

Terri Harper will defend her WBA Super-Welterweight World Title against former world pound-for-pound No.1 Cecilia Braekhus on the undercard of Katie Taylor’s historic homecoming clash with Chantelle Cameron at the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland on Saturday May 20, live worldwide on DAZN.

Former WBC and IBO Super-Featherweight World Champion Harper (13-1-1 6 KOs) won the WBA 154lbs World Title by widely outpointing Scotland’s Hannah Rankin at the Motorpoint Arena Nottingham in September last year – her first fight up at Super-Welterweight.

Norway’s Braekhus (37-2, 9 KOs), a former undisputed ruler at 147lbs, is attempting to become a two-division World Champion. ‘First Lady’, a modern pioneer of women’s boxing, held the WBC and WBA World Titles at Welterweight from 2009 to 2020, also picking up the WBO Title in 2010 and the IBF Title in 2014.

Braekhus lost the titles by majority decision to Jessica McCaskill in August 2020 in Downtown Tulsa, USA and lost again to ‘CasKILLA’ in a rematch at the American Airlines Center in Dallas in March 2021. McCaskill is the only fighter to have beaten Braekhus as a professional.

“This fight has been a long time coming but it will be worth the wait to be on such an amazing card,” said Harper. “All eyes around the world will be watching that night and I want to show everyone who Terri Harper is.”

“I’m very excited to challenge Terri Harper for the WBA 154lb. World Title on this tremendous card, my first time fighting in Ireland,” said Braekus. “I’ve spent my entire career facing the toughest challenges and this fight is another chapter.”

“I’m delighted to announce the first undercard fight for what will be one of the greatest nights of boxing in Irish history on Saturday May 20 – and what a fight!” said Matchroom Sport Chairman Eddie Hearn. “Two-weight World Champion Terri Harper gets the biggest fight of her life as she makes the first defence of her WBA Super-Welterweight World Title against former pound-for-pound No.1 and undisputed Welterweight ruler Cecilia Braekus.

“Two unbelievable World Title fights already confirmed for Katie Taylor’s historic homecoming fight against undisputed Super-Lightweight Champion Chantelle Cameron and there’s still so much more to come. We’re building an incredible show on May 20 and we will be confirming the next undercard fight tomorrow – it’s another cracker! Roll on May 20 live worldwide on DAZN.”

“It is an honour to prepare Terri for a contest with arguably one of the greatest females of all time in Cecilia Braekhus,” said trainer and manager Stefy Bull. “This has just got a whole lot more exciting now we are sharing a bill with what I believe has the potential to be the best and most thrilling fight female boxing can deliver in Katie Taylor vs. Chantelle Cameron. Two of the best female fighters on the planet in an undisputed vs. undisputed clash – May 20 is going to be one hell of a night.”

“Cecilia has accomplished so much as the long reigning undisputed Welterweight Champion, we are excited that she is now getting this opportunity to challenge Teri Harper for the WBA Super-Welterweight World Title,” said Tom Loeffler.

“Cecilia is one of the most accomplished female boxers in the sport with 3 Guinness Book World Records, we’re excited to work with Eddie, Matchroom and DAZN again for Cecilia being on this tremendous show in Dublin, Ireland.”

Boxing Preview: Devin Haney (29-0-0, 15 KOs) vs Vasiliy Lomachenko (17-2-0, 11 KOs)

Two of the most talented fighters in boxing will clash for the lightweight title when Devin “The Dream” Haney defends his undisputed championship against Ukraine’s three-division world champion Vasiliy Lomachenko. The showdown is set for Saturday, May 20, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Devin Haney, a rising superstar in the sporting world, is bracing himself for a huge challenge against Vasiliy Lomachenko, one of the top fighters of his generation,” stated Top Rank chairman Bob Arum. “Both Haney and Loma are phenomenal boxers. This fight is bound to leave an indelible mark on boxing history.”

Haney (29-0, 15 KOs) is set to fight on home soil for the first time since his double victory against George Kambosos Jr. in Australia last year, which secured his undisputed championship. Aged just 24, Haney has forged a unique career path since going professional in Mexico in 2015 at 17. He debuted in the U.S. on the Manny Pacquiao-Timothy Bradley III undercard at MGM Grand Garden Arena in 2016. After a fourth-round defeat of the previously undefeated Zaur Abdullaev, Haney was granted the WBC lightweight world championship. He successfully defended his title against undefeated challenger Alfredo Santiago and former world champions Yuriorkis Gamboa, Jorge Linares, and Joseph Diaz Jr. Last June, he established himself as the undisputed champion with a masterclass 12-round performance in Melbourne, cheered on by over 40,000 Kambosos fans.

“I have immense respect for Lomachenko, a great fighter and future Hall of Fame contender,” said Haney. “I acknowledge his contributions to boxing. Despite him not giving me a shot when I challenged him in 2019, I won’t hold a grudge. This is the fight that the fans have been waiting for, and I’m determined to deliver. I’ve improved significantly since the Kambosos rematch. The more formidable my opponent, the better I perform. I’m eager for this fight. Lomachenko’s boxing IQ is phenomenal, but I’m ready to prove on May 20 that I’m the world’s best fighter. I’m prepared to defend my undisputed title in a devastating fashion.”

Lomachenko (17-2, 11 KOs), a two-time Olympic gold medalist with a remarkable 396-1 amateur record, has won world titles across featherweight, junior lightweight, and lightweight categories. He defeated Jorge Linares for the WBA and Ring Magazine titles in the lightweight category, and took the WBO title from Jose Pedraza. He added the vacant WBC title to his collection with a 12-round victory over Luke Campbell in London. The 35-year-old lost his titles to Teofimo Lopez in a tight contest in October 2020, but bounced back with commanding wins over Masayoshi Nakatani and Richard Commey the following year. After nearly 11 months off serving with a territorial defense battalion in his native Ukraine, Lomachenko defeated unbeaten contender Jamaine Ortiz last October.

Lomachenko said, “I aspire to become the undisputed lightweight champion, and Devin Haney holds the belts. I admire his boxing IQ and am thrilled to take on this challenge.”

MOLONEY-NAKATANI AND ALI WALSH’S COMEBACK WILL BE LIVE ON ESPN AND ESPN+ AT 8 P.M. ET
A world title fight and Muhammad Ali’s grandson will be in the limelight on Saturday, May 20, as part of the ESPN-televised prelims to the PPV main event, where undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney defends his title against former king Vasiliy Lomachenko at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

At Wednesday’s press conference, this is what the fighters had to say:

Devin Haney
“I feel like he should have fought me four years ago. But now the time has come. It’s going to be worse for him than it would have been had we fought back then.”

“On paper, this is my toughest test. But I look to make it an easy night. I look to make it as easy as possible and come out victorious.”

“I have been calling for this fight for four years. But the time has finally come. I take my hat off to him. I respect everything that he’s done. I respect his decision to stay and defend his country. That gave me my shot to go to Australia, so it was only right that I give him the shot as well.”

“I know what he is preparing for. But at the end of the day, we’re prepared for whatever he brings to the table. If he wants to make it a dirty fight, we have answers for that.”

Vasiliy Lomachenko
“Camp was hard like always. But I was very motivating. It was motivating because I understand. It is my last chance to become undisputed. So, I pushed myself in every training session. And now there are just four days left.”

“He talks about the past, but It’s hard to say things about the past. You can’t change it. Even if you talk about it, you can’t change it. Only God can change it.”

“He is a high-level boxer. He understands boxing. He knows what he needs to do. He can use his reach. He can use his feet. He can create distance. But I have a lot of experience in this sport. It will be very interesting for me.”

Oscar Valdez
“I’m excited because it’s been one year since my last fight. I’m coming off a loss, so I’m motivated. It doesn’t matter if you lose. What matters is how you come back. I’m going to come back and make a statement.”

“This is the perfect time for the rematch. This is what I love to do. I love being in the gym. I love training. I love fighting. You’re going to see something different Saturday night.”

“Eddy Reynoso is a great trainer. We always work on a lot of things. One thing that is always clear for me is that he works on the defense.”

“That doesn’t mean we’re not going to be offensive. We’re always going to keep that defense ready so that we don’t have any surprises.”

Adam Lopez
“I’m surprised this rematch is happening. Oscar said he’d give me the rematch after our first fight. But it never happened. We went our separate ways. But it’s coming back full circle. I think it’s great that it’s happening on this card. It’s a huge fight. People wanted to see it. I’m excited for it.”

“I’m a different fighter now. He fought me when I was 23 years old with 15 fights. I’m 27 now with 21 fights. I’ve been in there with some of the best since the fight with him. I’ve taken some losses, but I have learned from them. I’ve always taken tough fights.”

“I’m at my best. I’m in the best shape of my life. It’s a different story this time. If he thinks this is a tune-up fight, then he’s going to have a long night.”

Raymond Muratalla
“I’m just ready to be a champ. This is nothing but hard work that we’ve been putting in. I can’t wait for Saturday. I’m trying to show people that I’m the next 135-pound champion.”

“I didn’t warm up like I usually do in my last fight. So, I got knocked down {in the first round}. But I got back up, and I got the stoppage.”

“I’m ready. I’m ready for anyone. To be the best, you have to go through these people. I’m just trying to get to the top. I’m going to take care of business this Saturday.”

Jeremia Nakathila
“I can’t wait for Saturday night to do my thing. I’m excited to be here. We are looking forward to making a statement.”

“The last time I was in Las Vegas you were all able to see what I displayed against Miguel Berchelt. This Saturday, you will see more than that. I saw that Muratalla wanted to fight me on social media. I saw him mention my name. But I want to say that he can’t handle what he called out.”

HANEY – LOMACHENKO CARD
Devin Haney vs. Vasiliy Lomachenko; For Haney’s IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO world lightweight titles
Juno Nakatani vs. Andrew Maloney; For the vacant WBO world super flyweight title
Raymond Muratalla vs. Jeremia Nakathila; Lightweight
Oscar Valdez vs. Adam Lopez; Super featherweight

NBA Eastern Conference Finals Game 2 Preview: Miami Heat (1-0) at Boston Celtics (0-1)

0

The Boston Celtics dropped Game 1 to the Miami Heat in last season’s Eastern Conference finals, and it didn’t deter them from winning the series.

Boston is in the same hole in the rematch and looks to bounce back and even the best-of-seven set when it hosts the eighth-seeded Heat in Game 2 on Friday night.

The second-seeded Celtics outplayed Miami in the first half, but the Heat seized control with a dominating 46-25 edge in the third quarter en route to posting a 123-116 victory on Wednesday.

Boston led by 13 late in the second quarter prior to the epic collapse in which it allowed the Heat to make 17 of 26 shots (65.4 percent) in the third quarter.

Jayson Tatum led Boston with 30 points in Game 1 but he disappeared in the fourth quarter. Tatum didn’t attempt a single field-goal attempt in the period while committing three of his four turnovers. Brown had 22 points and nine rebounds on the night.

The best player on the floor in Game 1 was Miami’s Jimmy Butler, who recorded 35 points, seven assists, six steals and five rebounds.

Butler has five 30-point efforts this postseason and is averaging 31.5 points in 11 games.

The Heat swiped homecourt advantage with the Game 1 win, and multiple players made reference to their teammates having chips on their shoulders.

Miami had to go the play-in route to even make the playoffs before stunning the top-seeded Milwaukee Bucks in the opening round and beating the New York Knicks in the conference semifinals.

The Celtics are now the team feeling the pressure as they don’t want to fall behind 0-2 with Games 3 and 4 in Miami.

Boston coach Joe Mazzulla bristled multiple times after Game 1 when it was suggested his team wasn’t prepared to play. Mazzulla pointed out the Celtics “won three out of the four quarters.”

Of course, they were missing in action in the one that decided the contest.

Meanwhile, the Heat will be hunting for another victory. In last season’s Game 2, Boston pummeled Miami 127-102 to even the series.

MLS Preview: Nashville SC (6-3-4) at Charlotte FC (5-5-3)

0

Charlotte FC defeated Nashville SC, 4-1, last July in the only previous meeting between the sides. The four goals equals the most Charlotte FC has ever scored in an MLS match while it was also tied for the most goals Nashville SC has ever allowed in a match in club history.

Charlotte FC has won six of its last seven matches in all competitions (1), including a club-record four straight games following a 2-1 win over the Chicago Fire on Wednesday. Charlotte FC had won its last five home matches in all competitions, also a club record.

Nashville SC is unbeaten in seven straight matches in all competitions (W5 D2) following a 2-1 win over Inter Miami FC on Wednesday, equaling the second-longest run in club history (9 straight in June-August 2021). Only one of those seven matches was on the road, a 1-1 draw at D. C. United last Saturday.

Brandon Cambridge came off the bench to score both of Charlotte FC’s goals in the 2-1 comeback win over the Chicago Fire on Wednesday. Cambridge is the second player this MLS season to score two goals as a substitute in a match, joining Inter Miami FC’s Josef Martinez (May 6 vs Atlanta United FC).

Hany Mukhtar recorded his sixth assist of the season on Wednesday against Inter Miami FC to go along with his six goals, his eighth match with a goal contribution this year. Since the start of the 2021 season, Mukhtar has contributed to a goal in 48 matches, seven more than any other player.
